"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
I could write up a long-ass and vaguely humorous guide to the wonderful breach of Netiquette we know as "god-modding," but someone who runs another forum I frequent already has and I fucking hate being the pale imitation God-modding basically comes in two flavors. The first is easy to do by mistake... taking control of characters that aren't yours. I say "easy to do by mistake" because it's sometimes easy to assume that characters do something that the other player hasn't explicitly said they would. Basically what you want to avoid is writing anything in your post that directly says such and such did this unless it was clearly stated in the controlling play's post that such-and-such did in fact do "this." This applies to both player characters and NPCs that you do not personally control. Of course we'll forgive you if you do it by accident, everyone suffers from occasional reading-comprehension fail. Just fix it when it comes up and there'll be no worries. If you do it on purpose, you are a jackass. The second flavor of godmodding is more of a combat issue, and this ties into the forum's policy of expecting roleplayers to use their brains when writing a post. As a rule of thumb: the person deciding whether anything hits is the one in control of the thing being hit. This means two things: you have to refrain from declaring an "auto-hit" on enemies that you did not "introduce" (in other words, other player-characters, NPCs, or Shadows brought into the thread by another player), and you also need to keep in mind how not to Mary Sue. If your character isn't logically at a skill level where they can avoid something without damage, make them take damage. Have them break a few bones. Bleed a little. Hell, have them stub their toe or trip up at a potentially vital moment. Point is, they aren't invincible and they don't hit unerringly. We don't have any sort of big-ass list of combat rules or dice rolls that we abide by. This is, for want of a better description, co-op improv fanfiction. The story is only as good as you are at writing it... and godmodding sucks banana-bread. So, like, don't godmod. You'll just sour everyone else's fun while stroking your character's man-thingie. Or... girl-thingie. Whichever. |
