HARDBOILED
Name: Nana Samurakami (村上 ナナ) Age: 17 Gender: Female School/Occupation: Tenshihishou High, Class 2-F Clubs: Kendo Club (rarely, if ever, attends) Interests/Hobbies: Nana is a huge fan of Japanese period dramas and aspires to be like the samurai from said dramas. Appearance: ![]() (drawn by me) Nana is of average weight and build for a Japanese teenage girl. Because of many years of street fighting, she’s built up quite a bit of lean muscle, and is rather physically fit. Her hair is naturally a toxic green color, and tends to stand out among a crowd, and her eyes are a similar shade of green. She’s not picky about what clothes she wears, so long as it’s easy to move in and comfy. She doesn’t like wearing the sleeves long, and will generally roll them up unless it’s too cold to go without long sleeves. Her school uniform is modified in a consistent manner with sukeban fashion as well; rolled up sleeves and a lengthened skirt reaching to her ankles. She has a pair of black leather boots that she’s particularly fond of, and it has a tendency to creep into outfits that they wouldn’t even fit with. Personality: Nana is a woman of masks. She hides most of her emotions behind a cocky smile and a devil-may-care attitude. She’s super casual around most people and acts like they’re her friends even if they don’t think the same way or even if she doesn’t actually consider them friends herself. But that’s okay, because they’re all buddies here! She has a strong feeling of self-loathing toward herself that she uses to justify not making strong emotional connections with people. In her own words, she considers herself to be “trash”. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, she’s drawn to those she sees as weaker than her and often takes it upon herself to mentor them and help them become better people than she ever could be. Her main source of frustration with herself is the fact that she can’t seem to change; no matter how much she tries to break away from her old middle school habits, she finds herself physically intimidating people and immediately jumping to less lawful solutions to problems because it’s easier for her than trying to get things done the right way. She always inevitably drives people away like this, and when she doesn’t inadvertently drive them away, she purposefully tries to force them away. History: Nana originally lived in Osaka. Her family did not have a lot of money, and one of her earliest memories is of her inadvertently listening in on one of their arguments and hearing her father blame how poor they were on her. Her father was a salaryman at a pharmaceutical company that had been hit hard by the repression and her mother worked several different jobs around the city. Nana started getting into a more delinquent lifestyle after it was discovered that her mother had been selling herself to provide for the family. Nana’s reaction to the taunts she’d gotten from the other children had been to beat them up. Eventually, she decided that she didn’t need to be a burden on the family anymore, and at the tender age of thirteen she joined her first gang. Through the things they stole from the people they mugged and the pay from the drugs they sold Nana was able to help provide for the family in her own way. Eventually, her father confronted her on the matter and she had to come clean about the matter. Her father, distraught from learning that his daughter had joined a gang to help provide for the family, participated in a plan some of his coworkers had hatched. Eventually, the company discovered that Nana’s father had been among those embezzling funds, but because he hadn’t had as large of a role in the scandal, he wasn’t let go from the company. Instead he was transferred to a lesser position in Yumegawa as punishment. Naturally, the whole family went with him. On the way to Yumegawa, Nana decided to try and change. She shed her angry exterior, because no one would know about the scandals back home. She could try and be happy. Of course, it didn’t last long. Not even a week into life at her new middle school, she found herself asking the local banchou if she could join his gang. The banchou, Daisuke, and his two right hand women, Emi and Kanon, let her in after Nana managed to beat Daisuke in a fight. Over time, Nana rose to the highest ranks of Daisuke’s gang and managed to pull in quite a few others while spreading their gang’s territory. She entered a relationship with Kanon and felt something close to love for the first time in her life. It didn’t last for long. In Nana’s third year of middle school, her father was run over by a motorcycle and killed. The driver of the motorcycle was Kanon’s ex-boyfriend. Nana disappeared for a week and stewed in her own thoughts at home, and eventually decided that it was her fault since she’d been dating Kanon at the time. She simultaneously decided that they couldn’t keep doing this gang life, because all it would end in was tragedy and pain for them all. She went to the gang and told them she was leaving. What Nana didn’t know was that during the week she’d been gone, Emi had staged a coup and taken over the gang. She’d managed to toss Daisuke out and had been waiting for Nana to appear again so she could do the same to her. When Nana announced that she was leaving, Emi’s response was to beat her up and have her tossed down the riverbank that marked the edge of their territory. The end of Nana’s third year approached. She had no friends because she was a known gang member and her former friends from the gang refused to even acknowledge her. She was slated to go to Kasuhayashi High and she knew that the others from her gang would surely go there too. In one last ditch effort to separate herself from them, for both her safety and her own mental wellbeing, Nana worked her ass off studying. Miraculously she made it into Tenshihishou High, a school with a substantially higher tuition than Kasuhayashi. Now that she’s here, though, she doesn’t seem too inclined to work hard at all and is fine with skipping school whenever she gets the chance to. Weapons/Equipment/Combat Skill: Nana has lived in the seedier parts of town for most of her life and she’s been in so many fist fights that she can’t remember them all anymore. Not only that, but she carries around a wooden sword that she’s actually quite skillful with, something that makes her quite the threat in a physical fight. "...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
^ totally gonna hold you to this : ) I think Izanami is a good fit for Nana as a character from what I already know of her from Rebirth, so I'm not terribly squeamish about letting you have that one. Was actually going to ask for you to PM your reasoning to me but I see you've updated Nana's personality and history--the reasoning there is fine enough, so... Approved. (insert fancy confetti.jpg here and all that) |
