Name: Leonard Darling Age: 45 Gender: Male School/Occupation: A restaurateur and non-practicing attorney specializing in corporate law, Leon is currently working through the Japanese-American Bar Association to obtain a license to practice in Japan and represent his new business, a restaurant called The Three Bears in the Mizugachi Ward. He desires to handle legal affairs personally as he's grown to distrust other lawyers. Clubs: N/A Interests/Hobbies: Leon is an avid cook; he became one by necessity during law school, where eating out was a rare treat. Not only does he practice the culinary styles passed down through his family over the generations, he's also inherited his late wife's recipes and intends on passing them onto his daughter Jacqueline. He is also an avid weapons collector and fan of brain-centric games such as mahjong or chess. Electronic games aren't necessarily his favorite, but as a way to bond with his daughter they're good fun. Finally, as the son of a passionate English teacher, Leon enjoys a night with a good drink and a book as much as he can enjoy anything in the world. Appearance: Still surprisingly handsome at forty-five, Leon's strong jaw and high cheekbones give him a hard, wiry appearance only augmented by the scruff of his beard beneath the sweep of short hair and the contrast of his icy eyes. The few lines of age that have appeared have given him a hawk-like appearance that can be both inviting and intimidating. Leon is quite physically fit, remarkably so for someone with as much work to do and so little time. Jax has occasionally made teasing comparisons to Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson, but perhaps she's not really that far off. He certainly appreciates the comparisons. Quietly, where Jax can't hear. These days Leon can't be bothered to dress much more heavily than business casual, but the outfits he wears around the restaurant are nice by the standards of the American public. A vest over long sleeves with slacks is usually enough to make him feel like he's classy enough for his establishment, and maybe he is. Such a thing would be for him to dictate, after all. Leon is also rather fond of his father's double breasted coat when he's out and about in the town. He thinks it makes him look dignified, and his daughter thinks it makes him look like he stumbled out of a bad western. It is hard to say who is more correct. Personality: The most important thing in Leon's life is his daughter, Jax, who he worries about incessantly. The recent death of his wife compounded by his older daughter's disappearance has created an emotionally trying time for both father and daughter; Jax has suffered socially and academically ever since and Leon suspects that she has more than a touch of survivor's guilt deep down. After years of wandering the country to try and rouse her spirits, he finally brought his daughter to Japan; a last ditch measure to try and distance them both from the tragedy back home built on the hope growing closer to what remains of his wife's family. Leonard is a born romantic who has grown up into the body of a tired, cynical old man trying to put on the best face that he can for his remaining daughter. Though he holds himself to extensive personal standards of honesty and generosity and instilled both qualities into his daughters, Leon is all too aware that others do not share the same ideals. He also understands that the only men who can actually afford to be honest are those either too smart to be tricked or those who can afford to lose and lose again. With a child to take care of he can only be the former, and so Leon has become thoughtful and appraising in his middle age; considering every side of a situation with the keen, analytical mind that once made him a feared attorney. There are only two things that instantly shatter Leonard's cool head. The first are the movements of his former business partner and sworn enemy Albert Garland, whose ethics only took a turn for the worse after Leonard's sudden departure from the company. Like his daughter, Leon blames Garland for the misfortune that's befallen him and his family and would like nothing more than the chance to engage in a bit about. The second thing that weighs on Leon's mind is any news or signs of his missing daughter, Remmington Darling, who has been missing for close to five years and is rapidly approaching the deadline of being declared legally dead, a reality that he is struggling to accept. History: Leonard Darling went into business with Albert Garland as the chief lawyer of the Garland family's newest branch of business nearly twenty years ago, playing the stock-market fresh out of law-school and using every inch of legal expertise to claw up the financial ladder. It all seemed like gravy at first; during that time Albert and Leon both married, had children, and made a hell of a lot of money. But after about seven years in business together things went suddenly and definitively sour. There was a patent lawsuit with an independent business called Bluebell Studios that had supposedly infringed on a company copyright. Leon took them to court and won easily, inflicting enough financial damage to dissolve their competitor. It was only after the fact that Leon discovered that Albert had falsified records and paid off key officials to streamline a corporate takeover; the technology in question wasn't theirs and never had been. Furious, Leon left the company after a physical altercation with his unrepentant former friend. Left with very little of his former money after the incident, Leonard moved his family to his old hometown to be closer to his parents and opened a private practice. Things weren't as good as they had been, but they were alright. Though he was plagued with financial trouble as his parents grew ill in their later years, Leon contented himself with the fact that his wife Amanda and his daughters were still happy. Unfortunately as the kids grew over and his parents passed away, things became more difficult. Remmington, a social outcast more than a little affected by the loss of her grandparents, began to get into trouble with the law, particularly in the area of underage drinking. Though Leon's father had been a respected town sheriff and this deflected some scrutiny, the beleaguered father found himself unable to control his daughter as she took her adolescence out on the world around her. Finally, one night she was caught at a frat party while he was out of town. Amanda collected her, but on the way home the car was struck by a drunk driver and Remmington's mother was killed instantly. After that things fell apart very quickly. In the scramble to hold his family together, Leonard shuffled his cases off to other attorneys. Bills went unpaid and debts racked up, and then without warning one night Remmington disappeared, leaving only a note apologizing for causing the death of her mother. That was when Jax finally snapped. The younger daughter began avoiding school and looking for any excuse to get into a fight. Fearing that she too would meet with tragedy, Leon closed his firm, rented out his house, and took the girl on the open road. Almost three years later, with Jacqueline's spirits somewhat revived, Leonard brought his daughter to Yumegawa to bond with his late wife's family; borrowing money from them to open up a restaurant under their home called The Three Bears in the Mizugachi Ward. If it is financially successful, he intends to eventually hand off the day to day administration to a trusted manager and head back to America with Jax to try and reclaim their lives back in the states, but for now Japan and this restaurant is the Darling family's home. Weapons/Equipment/Combat Skill: Born to a family of hunters, Leon knows his way around all sorts of knives and firearms. He owns more than his fair share; not only is he the owner of a restaurant full of cutlery, he's also a weapons collector with a fair amount of blades and even a couple of firearms he managed to slip through customs that he keeps in an old safe. Leon was also part of his university's boxing team some twenty-odd years ago. He was quite good and the experience never really faded. Maybe it's the simple pleasure of busting his ex-partner's face burning into his memory or maybe it's just perfectionism, but Leon keeps up his physical training. He may not be a spring-chicken anymore, but he can still bring the heat like a brick shithouse if riled.
