HARDBOILED

Name: Aika Ohayashi (小林 愛佳) Age: 19 Gender: Female School/Occupation: Has not attended school for a year now, formerly attended Kasuhayashi High as a 3rd year Clubs: Formerly a member of the Computers Club Interests/Hobbies: Internet forums and surfing the internet in general. Plays a lot of free to play MMOs and video games too to pass the time (she has them shipped to her house so she doesn’t have to go out and buy them). She’s good with computers too (though she’s not much of a programmer) and earns what meager funds she has through work on a tech support forum. Appearance: ![]() Because she doesn’t leave home much at all anymore, Aika doesn’t do much to maintain a good appearance. Her brown hair is usually uncombed and tangled and her face is marked by bags under her eyes and old acne scars. There’s usually a fine layer of filth on her skin, but she always makes sure she washes it at least once a week. Due to the lack of sun, her skin has a pasty, yellow color to it. When it comes to clothes, she usually wears whatever’s available. One of the advantages of being a complete shut in is being able to wear whatever you want whenever you want, and there’s often days where she just sits around in her underwear and a tank top. During a rare occasion when she does go outside, she’ll throw on a hoodie (usually a tan, snake themed one she bought back before she became a shut-in) and she always wears the hood up to hide her face. Personality: Aika’s online personality and her offline personality are almost polar opposites. She has a difficult time with social interaction and becomes incredibly withdrawn when forced into a social situation, to the point that she refuses to speak. She rarely leaves her room, preferring the safe space she’s created within it to the harsh world outside its walls, and when she does leave it, it’s just to buy some necessity her parents have neglected. Online, though, she has a much easier time speaking with people. The wall of anonymity allows her to be as free-spoken as she’d like to be, and typing presents a format of speech that doesn’t leave her second guessing herself all of the time. In fact, she can go on for hours just chatting online if you allow her to. But voice contact is a no-no, and she doesn’t Skype and she doesn’t use a mic when she’s playing anything online for this reason. History: Aika was born to a rather average middle class family. Her parents were both office workers, with her their only child. For most of her life, Aika was a model student. She consistently made top ranks in her classes, was always among the top ten on exams, and was well set to go to some of the top schools in Japan. Some would have even called her “gifted”. To support her in her endeavors, she went to cram school every Sunday to help prepare for her eventual high school entrance exams. But despite her academic prowess, Aika ended up going to Kasuhayashi High rather than Tenshihishou. In any other city, going to the public high wouldn’t have been much of a problem. But Tenshihishou had a reputation for accepting students to it just based on their academics, while Kasuhayashi High was barely even considered a school and more someplace to dump your delinquent children for six days of the week. Neither of these descriptions were particularly true and Kasuhayashi was really a decent school, but the close proximity of the two schools and the sharp contrast between the average students who attended the schools meant that the reputations stuck. Aika’s parents gave her no small amount of grief over her school placements, constantly berating her for not trying hard enough and the fact that she had just ruined her whole future by ending up in Kasuhayashi. Still, she tried her hardest. She made friends with some of the upperclassmen and continued to study and cram and prepare for her exams so she could graduate and then start preparing for her college entrance exams. It was her duty to get into a good college so she could get a good job after college and make a good income before meeting a good husband and becoming a good wife. This was what she was told. In her senior year of high school, all of these perceptions began to just fall apart. Aika’s upperclassmen friends had all graduated by this point and were trying to get into college. Some of them failed the entrance exams no matter how hard they tried. Even the ones who had taken a year off just to study for the exams were having difficulty. She continued to hear tales of people who made it out of college, only to find that they couldn’t get a job because of the current job market, and thus were unable to make any kind of income at all. Even those who were managing to get jobs were rapidly laid off because companies held more loyalty toward their older employees than the younger ones they hired in the spring. A collapsing future appeared to Aika. She’d been assured all her life that all she needed to do was get into a good college and get hired at a job. She would have a constant source of income for the rest of her life. There was no reason to worry so long as she studied her brains out and made top scores on every exam and made it into the best colleges and got a certain degree that every other salaryman in the country had. But she couldn’t do that. She had already ruined herself by ending up at a sub-par school, and she would never make it into a good college, and even if she did make it through college, she would never get a job, because people like her weren’t valued and the economy was unstable. And finally, she just stopped. Aika stopped going to school. She stopped talking to people. She never left her room except to use the restroom. Her parents knew there was something wrong with her, but the shame associated with taking her to a therapist prevented them from seeking professional help. They brought her meals and cleaned her clothes for her. She stayed in bed most days. After a while she started going online again and playing video games, but she never left home. Anything she wanted was bought online and delivered to her door. For six months she did this. At this point, she had officially dropped out of school and was now legally considered a “hikikomori”. She continued for another six months, spending her 19th birthday locked up in her room by herself. And to this day, she remains in there, not speaking to anyone, never leaving home except in the most extreme circumstances, and it’s entirely possible she’ll remain there for the rest of her life.
