Age: 17

Gender: Female

School/Occupation: Kasuhayashi High, Class 2-6

Clubs: Art

Interests/Hobbies: Street art and graffiti. Give her a spray paint can and she’ll give you a mural, though she might just tag the wall with her name instead.

Kanon is tall for her age and gender and stands about an inch or two over most of her peers. She’s got long black hair that would be quite pretty if she actually cared about keeping it looking good. Instead, split ends abound and it tends to fall over her right eye. She dresses modestly, preferring long sleeved button-ups and long pants, and she often wears a raincoat over her clothes so she doesn’t get paint on them.

Like a lot of the other girls in the gang, she modifies her uniform, shortening the sleeves, loosening her socks, and lengthening the skirt so it hangs to her ankles.

Personality: Kanon is quiet and has a tendency to melt into a crowd. She rarely speaks, and when she does, it’s rough and in short sentences. Her default stance on things is “don’t get involved and observe”. When she’s around someone she likes, she tends to talk more openly, though she’s still quiet as hell. She often finds herself acting as the “straight man” to her more hotheaded comrades and holding them back when they’re about to do something especially stupid.

For a few years now, she’s felt listless and without direction. While she continues to paint, nothing has the same life to it that it used to, and when she spends time with her gang members, she feels like there’s an invisible wall separating her and them. Her motivation is shot and she feels no reason to break her current routine for something else.

History: Born to a single mother in Sekaimoto Ward, Kanon spent most of her early life living in a cramped one-room apartment. She never knew her father, only knowing that he was a “true scumbag” from what her mother would say of him. Due to her mother’s frequent arrests (which ranged a gambit of deviances, from drug possession to petty theft) she spent a lot of time staying with her aging grandmother. When Kanon was 8, her mother went for a walk one night and never came back. With no one else to watch her, Kanon was permanently moved into her grandmother’s home.

Her grandmother was a stern, old-fashioned woman who tried to force Kanon to conform to her own perceptions of what a woman should be. Quiet, demure, modest, but with a touch of iron to her will to show that she was not one to be stepped on. Kanon never could conform in the way her grandmother would like and often ran away from home. It was during one of these times that she found a discarded paint can. There was still a bit of paint in it, so she tried using it to draw a picture on the wall. There was something cathartic about this kind of vandalism and she found herself buying more spray paint and working on the picture more and more over the course of the next few weeks.

She met Emi Kashiwara while working on the mural one day and the two struck up a friendship entirely based on Emi coming to watch her paint and rambling on about things while she did it. It was Emi who first introduced the idea of joining Daisuke Hino’s gang to Kanon. As it turned out, Kanon had been painting in Hino’s gang’s territory and she was looking at getting her ass kicked for throwing up tags in their part of town in the near future. If she joined up with them, she could keep tagging freely, so she did.

A girl from Osaka transferred into Kanon’s class in her second year of middle school. This girl, Nana Samurakami, immediately came to Hino a few days afterwards and asked to join his gang. Amazingly, she managed to beat Hino at the terms of his fight (take his keychain), though not at the fight itself, and proved herself to be a capable strategist, helping them win their most recent turf wars. Over the course of a few months, Nana ended up becoming their de facto “Lady Banchou”. Kanon found herself silently admiring Nana and counting her among her small circle of friends. Every time she was around Nana, everything seemed just a tiny bit better.

It was Nana who ultimately confessed her affections, and Kanon accepted. The two of them began to date, though it was a rather low key relationship and anyone who saw them in public probably wouldn’t have noticed, especially since Kanon actually had a boyfriend at the time. Kanon felt like she could open up around Nana, and she began to speak rather openly of her grievances with the world, her home life, and even just how much she loved her.

What ultimately ended their relationship was a situation out of either of their hands. Togami, someone Kanon had been seeing at the same time she’d been dating Nana, was out driving one night and accidentally ran over Nana’s father, killing him. Kanon blamed herself, even though she had nothing to do with the death, and felt too guilty to call Nana and check in on her. Nana disappeared after the fact, leaving the gang to handle themselves. It was at this point that Emi made her move, taking over the gang and ousting Hino so there was no one to oppose her. When Nana finally returned and proposed that they split up the gang, Kanon helped the rest of the group beat her up.

Kanon and Nana met only one time after this to agree that they were officially no longer seeing each other. They never talked again after that, and Nana ended up being accepted into a different high school than anyone else in the gang. Kanon returned to making her graffiti murals after school and hanging with Emi’s gang, never really sure what to do. Recently, her grandmother’s health has been poor, introducing a new element of stress to her life.

Weapons/Equipment/Combat Skill: Kanon’s been in a gang for a long time now, and has picked up some significant fight skills in the process. She’s not big on the idea of a fair fight and will use whatever skills and tools she has at her disposal to win.
