Vampires Are Not Dead. They are very much alive.

They do feed on blood but are not the typical horrific monsters normally portrayed. What makes a vampire so different from a Human is the appearance of a supernatural symbiotic Organism. The small bit of research done on the Organism indicates that it needs hemoglobin to survive. Rather than drain it's host of the needed resources it modifies the human host to retrieve what it needs. After being infected the organism begins to insinuate itself into the very tissues of the host. By the time fully mature at about five days the organism takes the place of one out of five of the host's cells and has so significantly altered the host’s biology that it is in many ways human in appearance only. The digestive system has now been modified to handle large amounts of blood from which the organism extracts the needed hemoglobin.

It is also worth noting that the Organism is extremely susceptible to light, in particular sunlight. The high concentration of some wavelength of light in the suns rays causes a reaction in the cells of the Organism effectively causing them to combust taking the nearby human cells with them. Extended exposure to direct sunlight can kill a Vampire.

In return for playing host the new Vampire gains several abilities to help it survive and excel. The first is the appearance of extended canines that allow the new hunter access to fresh blood. Several others are:

The organism speeds up the healing process in the host, as long as the wound would not cause a normal person to die of blood loss or failed organs within five minutes of receiving the wound the vampire will live and be perfectly healthy within the hour.

The Vampire is now immune to most diseases and poisons.

Thanks to the Organism reinforcing the muscles the Vampire is now stronger and able to move faster. As the Vampire begins to further understand how to handle the Organism then these abilities increase as well. The Vampire's senses all heighten as well and can grow with time.

Mental faculties and reflexes increase to better deal with the demands of their new life.

The Vampire's body becomes more efficient and all functions such as heartbeat, breathing, and body temperature all drop down to near hibernative levels. Though able to function normally, this gives the Vampire the appearance of death as they have almost no pulse, cold skin, and rarely need air. In fact the Organism can help support the Vampire by pulling oxygen out of it's surroundings in situations a normal human lung could not (i.e. underwater). This changes only after feeding where temperature rises, as does the heart rate allowing for quicker digestion. The Vampire becomes more in tune with the flow of energy in the world. This allows the Vampire greater ability to affect it, which leads to powers such as flight, invisibility and mind control.

The more a Vampire understands how it and the symbiote relate to this flow the more he finds himself able to accomplish. This does make using Arcane magic a bit harder in the beginning for a Vampire as they try to make the reality of what they are co-exist with the rules of the Arcane.

A Vampire can almost always tell instinctively when another of their kind is nearby. As predators this is a means to avoid confrontation as much as to warn them. The Organism also somehow stops the ageing process effectively allowing the host to live forever unless it is killed. The Organism itself reproduces asexually so the most recent one is almost always the same as the last and the one before it and the one before it. The person who is the host is the greatest factor in how it manifests.

It transfers through the blood but if not attached to a host will die if it comes in contact with the air. A fairly large amount of blood is needed for the Organism to take hold on a host so accidental transmission is almost unheard of.
