The heavy iron door in the shadows of the Great Room stairs is locked and warded. Past this door is a steep, narrow stairwell softly lit by the dim luminescence that shines from deep within the stone. The walls are scarred, as if torn at by massively strong claws. The stairwell flows out to a large open area with floor of stone and lit by torches along the wall with softly burning flames of amber and emerald scattered along the walls. A heavy iron door to the left of the stairwell leads to what could generally be used as a guard's room should the need arise. Two cots, simple table with two chairs, it holds nothing else except the emptiness of disuse. Past the guard room, taking up a large corner, a wine cellar fully stocked. On the wall opposite the stairwell are two doors, one for a large armory and another leading to a well stocked forge. Between the forge and the wine cellar, two tight and dark cells with thick stone walls and heavy iron doors. The final wall holds a doorway in the center, leading to a large storage area, and tucked away in the corner stairs of stone begin the descent to the caverns below. The dark carefully laid stone of the stairs soon give way to a more natural flow of rock. Still the same dark black stone that makes up the Bastion, but only carved by time and the elements of nature rather than the touch of man or magic. The way down is gentle but long, winding back and forth on itself with tight corridors suddenly opening to wider areas with large ledges. At last the path empties into a large cavern. The ceiling is lost to the shadows, and all but a small area is covered with a deep clear pool. Too each side of this pool there are deep shadows that are exits from the Bastion leading back to Black Earth or the Sanctuary Isles. Control of these exits is a granted power gifted from the Guardians to the current Baron/Baroness of the Bastion, and with his/her blessing passed on to select members of the staff during his/her absence. |
