Not sure if this is getting much attention outside of the US, but here is the story that seems to be dominating American headlines.

Basically, a white "shock jock" has been fired for "racist" remarks against a woman's college basketball team. The term he used was "nappy-headed hos".

I think he deserved a suspension, however, firing him just seems to be silly. I'm not really a fan of his, can't say I've even heard more than 15 minutes of his broadcasts, but the guy is considered a "shock jock". He was hired to create controversy and bolster ratings, so it seems a bit hypocritical to fire the old man.

I also have to admit that it's really annoying considering rap and hip-hop artists often employ the same terminology - yet it's widely accepted. :taunt:

yea i heard about that BS, and my favourite part of it is the Rev Al Sharpton is flapping around shouting 'racist' as usual. Imus has hit back asking Al if he's going to apologize to those Duke students who got dragged thru the mud on bogus rape charges. Of course Al won't, and neither will Jesse Jackson, so why the fuck should Imus apologize for using Ebonics?

I can't really comment as I'm not sure what nappy-headed means. Nappy is English for diaper... not sure what it means over there.

Yeah, a bit of an over-reaction given what is acceptable in rap, etc. I suppose that's the downside of the country swinging back from the right, an increase in PC hysteria.

I can't imagine anything but the sack over here either. The equivalent would probably be wog-headed hos - which is pretty harsh. Even if he's out to shock, you don't usually get away with blanket racism.

Obviously, black rappers can - but they are not held to the same levels as white people. Presumably because they are animals.

I'm joking, but it highlights the problem with having two standards. There should be one rule otherwise it undermines the concept.

Wog is not the same as "nappy".

Nappy refers to a hair style. Usually big and seemingly unmanagable hair like Buckwheat sported.

The woman below would also be considered to have "nappy" hair. And not only blacks can have it. I've seen plenty of whites with nappy hair too. Including Imus himself!

Shouldn't have apologized.

Quick glance at his wiki-entry and the entire story becomes farcical. He has been consistently homophobic, misogynistic, anti-semitic, racist. The 'final straw', right, more like him making a strategic error in admitting blame. No apology, and nothing happens. Look at the Bush administration, ha. Americans.

Old, bloody, news.

I can't fault that view at all. Everyone inherently finds something distasteful and the current efforts to 'protect' people are completely counter to free expression.

It was probably authored by a neo-con, hoping to salvage what's left of the 'libhrul abhorrence' platform.

Insulting people is part of our heritage. It took hundreds of years to gain the freedom to be utterly vile and it's in everyone's interest to retain it. Well, it's in my interest and that should be sufficient.
