Sad news that The Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford may have to send their collection of shrunken heads back to the country of origin. Thankfully, one Englishman is happy to replenish the stock. I'm happy to put myself up for this if they need some more. Shrunken Heads "An artist is offering to donate his own head to an Oxford museum - if a collection of shrunken heads has to be returned to South America. Ted Dewan has written to Oxford University's Pitt Rivers Museum to offer his own head for shrinking. Museums have been facing an ethical debate about whether they should keep human remains on display or repatriate them for burial. And Mr Dewan says he is ready to offer his own head as a replacement. Shrunken heads fetch a hefty price on the black market, where they'll surely end up, in light of the fact that it's South-America. The tribes themselves manufacture counterfeit 'shrunken heads' from animal remains for illicit collectors. Internal divisions in the respective cultural groups themselves would also complicate the issue. The political dimensions are also precarious; repatriating Papua remains for instance would enrage the Indonesian authorities. Trade in shrunken heads was historically even more ghastly, where slaves were beheaded on demand by the tribal groups themselves, for bartering purposes. |

I enjoyed seeing them - and it's only right everyone should. They're great! It's not as if items displayed in the Pitt Rivers museum are going to be buried when repatriated, as Mock says - they'll end up on the market within days. Are we resolved to giving back all stolen artefacts or is it just preserved corpses? |
