I'm really hoping Mr. Mindgames gets together with Mrs. Mindless--it would be great entertainment to watch when she gets her hands on his tank.

Hong Kong warns against using worms to lose weight

Feb 19, 2008

HONG KONG (AFP) — Hong Kong health officials Tuesday warned would-be slimmers not to consume parasitic worms in an attempt to lose weight following adverts for products containing worm eggs.

A health department spokesman said there was no scientific evidence that infestation with ascaris, a parasitic worm which lives in the intestine, was a way to lose weight.

He warned that worm infestations caused pain, vomiting and diarrhoea and could prove difficult to get rid of.

"Ascaris infestation may also be fatal due to serious complications in human bodies such as intestinal, biliary tract or pancreatic duct obstruction. The worms may invade such organs as the lungs," he said.

"The infestation can be treated with medication that kills the parasite. Surgical removal of the worms may be required in case of obstruction."

The health department said it issued the warning following reports that a product containing worm eggs was being promoted as a slimming aid on a commercial website.

Ascaris is the most common worm infection in humans and is mostly found in tropical areas where sanitation and hygiene are poor. Adult worms can grow to more than 30 centimetres (one foot) long.

It's not touchy at all, it's the only way to have a rational discussion: make an assertion, and then back it up. This can take many forms, statistics or mathematical modeling being two examples.

Some people think all assertions are equally valid, regardless of corroborating evidence. They pick and choose actions and beliefs based on a combination of wishful thinking and what they can shoehorn. This makes them very susceptible to odd superstitions, held loosely together by a hodgepodge patchwork of belief systems.

The result of this mode of thinking is finding a vague significance in disparate events, based on what amounts to faith. It's essentially the same epistemological structure as fundamentalists of any stripe. This explains the scorn held for rational evidence-based discussion, since they don't see it as an appropriate response to the proclamation "I believe...".

I wonder how many references to "bot" there have been recently? I'll just say it's been used 23 times in the last 2 days, and then that can be the truth.

Talk about needing new material.

True. It's a complete steal of my Bzzzt-Does-Not-Compute-Bzzzt Mock-mockage of last year.

He didn't crash and go haywire at it, though. Bless.
It's a glitch! An incredibly specific glitch!

This one is priceless.

Your 16-year-old daughter falls for a divorcee of 36 and wants him to move in. Would you let him? Meet the parents who did

OH gosh, let me stop reading before I vomit all over myself

"Alison claims to be "very mature for my age" - something she says her lover told her not long after they met last October."

HA! I think we have all said that...

Right before we made a huge mistake in our lives!

AS for the parents, they are obviously completely incompetent, and should not have been allowed to breed.

There's so much wrong with every facet of that story that it is very entertaining. Good catch, Mock.

She's going to do it, and there's no law against it.

May as well keep her close, make sure she isn't being abused, and keeps her options open.

Perhaps they put a birth control pill in her oatmeal every morning.

And at 16 I thought there was a law against it, at least here in the states

Apparently, nothing illegal about it in England, though I wonder about buying her drinks after he knew her age. In some states, the relationship would constitute statutory rape. That's wholly dependent on what's defined the age of consent, as well as any special age difference laws in place.

Of course, regardless of the legality, it's monumentally stupid. A mid-teens girl in love with a mid-30's slimeball and inept parents letting the guy move in. It sounds like something from a daytime talkshow.

I agree with Korill actually - it IS ridiculous but at least they can keep an eye on her if she's living at home with them and make sure she's being treated well. When it all falls apart they're on hand and ready to sort out the mess.

Or they could assert some parental authority and prevent the relationship instead of enabling it. I assume the legal age of majority is 18 in the UK, so they could put a stop to it if they were so inclined.
