The game, Tetris was released over 20 years and it is still a popular and loved game by many. Tetriminos, 7 geometric shapes are composed of four square blocks each: One by one, a Tetrimino is randomly generated and falls down the playing field (also known as well or matrix) of a rectangular vertical shaft. The objective of the game is to control these Tetriminos by moving to one side or rotating it by 90 degree units within the matrix. When a horizontal line of ten blocks are created, it disappears and any blocks above the cleared line would fall. After clearing certain number of lines, the game will enter the next level. As the game progresses, the falling speed of Tetriminos increases and naturally grant players with more challenges. Tetris has deeper meaning then a simply geometry. The blocks would always end up creating a rectangle with appropriate placing and turning of each Tetriminos. When randomly generated Tetriminos falls, it resembles how life is unpredictable. There is no way to control what falls down but the players do have control over the blocks. The main objective of Tetris is to clear out set amount of lines and the player enters the next level. What is the purpose in life? Objectives provide purpose in one's life. Soren Kiekergard once said, "We do not have any knowledge of divine plans, so we must still find a way to make meaning for ourselves" Whether your meaningful life follows under egoism, existentialism, nihilism and so on, we must find the meaning among ourselves. Unpredictable life do have meaning as we have control over our life just like blocks being moved or turned to clear the lines. Existentialists believe that in order to have a good life, people must be responsible for their own action. Instead of blaming on the game for providing unwanted Tetrminos, the player is better off by continuing the game. In Tetris, players would encounter some difficulties when the shapes are misplaced and created gaps, disabling lines to clear out. Life would not always be perfect. A Hedonist for example, would state a life with pleasure (physical, mental, and spiritual) is meaningful. He/she will also state that main objective would be to avoid pain. Just like in tetris, there will be a time in life where things get out of control. ![]() With each block, the player is able to clear out one, two, three, or four lines. The 'I' shaped block would clear out 4 lines. Jeremy Bentham distinguished between higher and lower pleasures. With his mathematical formula in calculating a meaningful life, he stated that when the amount of pleasure granted - amount of pain = greater, the life is meaningful. When 4 rows are being cleared, there is no doubt that the level of pleasure is higher compared to a single row. Simple geometric game could be related to a meaning of life. It is up to each person to live their own purposeful life. Edited by Scott, Jun 15 2012, 09:33 AM.
