Ako’sha walked through the twisted landscape, this time it was a smoldering forest. Tree trunks ancient and wide were charred to pitch as their leaves bloomed with waves of red, orange, and yellow. Her pale, slender fingers softly ran over the bark, cascading flakes of charcoal to the ground as her tails swept the ash up into tiny whirlwinds as she passed. This place has been beautiful before she had come, lush, green, and full of life. Now the spread before her, announcing her arrival and spreading out in her wake.

The twisted woodland creatures that occupied this plane ran before her, fleeing the destruction. Above her the warped carrion birds with the tiny human arms folded under their wings circled behind her. They hoped for a meal to shove down their stubbed beaks with those creepy extra appendages; but they would find none today. She paused under the flaming boughs of a massive, tangled oak. Her eyes turned upwards to watch each leaf be consumed in flames. She willed it to burn slower so she could enjoy the beauty longer and the fire complied. One by one each leaf became its own tiny pyre that reflected with crystal clarity in her emerald eyes.

Something caught her attention and she turned her gaze deeper into the woods. Smoke swirled and clouded her view but she felt it more clearly now. A distant call, something pulling at her soul. Like mother nature calling to her creations to trek great distances, it beckoned her into the depths of the forest. With no desire to resist she drifted onwards. Her form shifted, but she barely felt it. She moved more quickly on the four legs of a fox than the two she had as a woman. The ash swirled around her and the coals crunched under her soft pads, thrilling her heightened senses.

She made her way through the forest, following the call, and the tree eventually gave way to asphalt. A street lined with burnt out buildings and scorched yards. A wasteland of suburbia that stretched on into the horizon. For a moment she hesitated, glancing back to the forest. It was already sprouting with new life on its borders and encroaching on the bedraggled suburb. The call tugged at her again and urgently, she had to find the source and trotted onwards through the decrepit streets.

Cages began to pop up in the yards, rusted and imposing. Some were broken and warped as if something wild and dangerous had broken free, others still held dead and withered beings. They were frozen in time, clawing in desperation for freedom. Disgust and fear welled up in her chest and she willed the flames to fly rampant, wiping them away into a storm of heat and dust. In the smoke visions swirled, images of people that were out of place and alien to this plane she wandered.

A tall, scruffy male with cyber arms argued that was heatedly talking to a smaller, sullen looking female who barely seemed to care. A giggling school girl threw multi-colored candies at another dark haired male slumped over a table littered with liquor bottles. They faded in and out of the smoke. Different emotions, different scenes. She remembered them and yet she did not. The visions of the familiar strangers enticed her and she followed them through the streets; moving closer to the rising city in the distance.

Building changed from homes to shops. The glass fronts bursting from the firestorm raging past. She paid no attention to them, she was lost in the visions trying to glean meaning or purpose from them. They were searching for something judging by their actions, and had been for a long time. Their faces betrayed their weariness, except for the ageless sullen girl. The visions were almost real, like glimpses of another realm through a veil. She could feel the thinness of the astral in this place. She began to wonder if it were these people, these images, that had called to her so strongly. But why? She didn’t know any of them, though instinct told her otherwise. She had shifted to human again and gently reached out her slender fingers to touch the visions, almost afraid they would disappear. Her fingers swept over the purple hair of the sullen girl and across the shoulders of the dark haired male with the mask over his face. She could almost swear she truly felt them and searched for any reaction from them. The girl turned her golden eyes in her direction and Ako felt her heart flutter.

She dared another touch but before she could the landscape tumbled and shifted underneath her throwing her off balance. The visions were pierced by mangrove trees as they sprang up from the ground, thick and dense. Vines crawled up tree trunks and draped over branches as exotic and dangerous looking flowers sprouted and threatened her with spines that dripped venom. The jungle grew up around her and the canopy closed off the light of the setting sun. The humidity choked out her flames and cut off the visions that still called to her. They haunted her now even as she fled the jungle for a dryer part of the plane.
