The dreary warehouse echoed the lound ambient drip of water runoff, dimly lit by the trashcan fire in the corner. A cold wind blew in from the streets and through the doorways, windows, and other holes and openings of disrepair. Refuse covered the floor, as rodents and insects could be spotted scavenging through it. The filthy, tarnished throne sat atop a mound of rubble in the center, and atop it sat the king of the land. Simon Hargrove. Mainframe. The "professional" in the shadows. The master hacker who shut down a bleeding-edge mech in it's steps. The handler of the sociopathic, broken little girl who could break into anywhere and deal with anyone in her path if needed. The man who could make things happen. What the fuck was he doing? What was really going on? Sweets was back, but this crew was far from the well oiled machine he wanted it to be. She was still gaining her footing. Meat couldn't do much more than smash his way through life. Gaou was as shady as ever, and Simon himself could feel himself slipping; he had been unable to pull off the simplest hacks without an extra push. As for Saru? Hell, she was the most efficient one on the crew. Shadow was another story. She'd been violated, data ripped straight from her head and biofeedback scarring her psyche. What's worse, the damage bore Simon's resonant signature. Who or what was posing as him? A thought occurred to him, that he didn't even know what he was anymore. Was he even still the original Simon? Was his consciousness trapped on the Matrix, or had Simon died and he was a copy, an e-ghost? Fuck, for all he knew "Simon" might be gone altogether and all that remained was another personality in Saru's head pushing her comm to new extremes as it hacked it's way around the Matrix. More extraordinary things than that had happened. Sweets had asked him what he was planning to do about Shadow. What the fuck could he do? At this point he was just glad she was still there. He wouldn't have been able to accept losing her so soon after getting Sweets back, but he didn't know what to do about this now. So far he had simply ignored it, hoping she would heal with time. If that didn't work, he'd have to think of something. He started to wonder what this bullshit with Option 3 was even about. Those Black Box fucks. Was this even relevant? Was he a dog chasing cars, way too big for him to do anything with once he caught it? Was he going to get everyone killed for poking their noses into something simply because he wanted a bone to chew on? Fuck. He'd see what the sister had to say. After that? Bills. Might be time to find some work. Simon stood and took a few steps down the rubble mound, flickering out halfway down as he left the node for the greater Emerald City Grid. |
