There are two mainly used ways of getting to Viridian City from the north end of Pallet. One is the North Road, a gentle, efficient walk beside a paved two-lane highway. There is a side path to the west of the main road that swings wide through the woods and rocky, mountain hillsides in that direction. Its almost 3 times as long, and liable to be a bit more dangerous. Pick which path to take.

Pokemon in the Area

Rattatas (roaming)(numerous) between the levels of 2 and 4
Pidgeys (roaming)(common) between the levels of 2 and 5
Spearow (roaming)(uncommon) between the levels of 4 and 7
Caterpie (roaming)(uncommon) between the levels of 4 and 7
Nidoran male (roaming)(rare) between the levels of 5 and 7
Hoothoot (roaming)(extremely rare) between the levels of 5 and 7
Mankey (roaming)(extremely rare) between the levels of 3 and 5
The North Road [Route 1]

This is a simple paved path leading up the gentle slope between Pallet and Viridian. Forest lays to either side of the road. Its a nice path, winding around some ledges only rarely, and mostly a straight run to Viridian. You may encounter 1 or two pokemon in your whole trip, if you're lucky and see any at all. You certainly won't meet any of the more rare types.

The trip lasts about 4 hours on foot through a wide area of cleared forest and waving tall grass surrounding the main road.
The Road Less Travelled

This is a narrow, one person dirt path through a forest that swiftly becomes dense with foliage. The path is still relativey clear throughout the woods, but its still no easy hike as it dips up and down, circles some wide ponds, and will often make you ford some shallow streams of cold mountain water. You might have to clear a space if you decide to make camp anywhere near here...the ground is covered in undergrowth beyond the narrow path. It's also shaded through and through, so the nights must be dark here.

On the up side (or the down side, depending on your opinion) pokemon noises can be heard all around you as you disturb their territory in your passing. This may be more of a downside...from the sound of it, not all of them are happy to see you, and some may have a bite to go with their bark. Watch where you step...this isn't a place to be caught off your guard.

The scenery is really picturesque, though. It'd be nice to have a camera. You're walking along the mountains that serve as the border for Johto and Kanto. When you reach the occasional break in the trees, the view below you is breathtaking.

Eventually the path turns down towards Viridian City. If you kept up a steady pace, you might make the city in...12 hours?
