The road between Cerulean City and Pewter City is a long one, long and hard all around. Mt. Moon, one of the most southern-reaching mountains of the region, stands amidst the path and no matter how you slice it you have to pass through Mount Moon to reach your destination. It is a nice hiking spot, though, and the entire area is rife with pokemon. Still, its not easy. Better take some supplies with you. Even with a motor vehicle you can't cross the area in less than a day at least.

Pokemon in the Area

Rattata (roaming)(extremely numerous) between the levels of 7 and 10
Pidgey (roaming)(numerous) between the levels of 10 and 13
Sandshrew (roaming)(common) between the levels of 10 and 15
Spearow (roaming)(common) between the levels of 6 and 10
Jigglypuff (roaming)(uncommon) between the levels of 8 and 12
Mankey (roaming)(uncommon) between the levels of 8 and 12
Zubat (roaming at night)(rare) between the levels of 10 and 12
Ekans (roaming)(rare) between the levels of 11 and 13
Clefairy (roaming at night)(extremely rare) between the levels of 15 and 17

Magikarp (fishing)(numerous) 10 and 15
Goldeen (fishing)(uncommon) between the levels of 8 and 13

Zubat (in Mt. Moon)(extremely numerous) between the levels of 8 and 12
Geodude (in Mt. Moon)(numerous) between the levels of 8 and 12
Paras (in Mt. Moon)(uncommon) between the levels of 8 and 10
Sandshrew (in Mt. Moon)(uncommon) between the levels of 8 and 12
Clefairy (in Mt. Moon)(rare) between the levels of 10 and 17
The Descent [Route 4]

The entrance to the mount moon caves from the Cerulean side is actually a little ways up the hill on this side of the mountain. You have to go up a long, gentle slope with a few small ridges to reach it (or down, if you just came out of the caves and heading towards Cerulean). Its about a three hour hike down, 4 if youre going up, and its not bad on the whole. You can see Cerulean City spread out a few miles away, and beyond that there lies the distant vision of the ocean
Mount Moon Caves

Just next to the pokemon center rises the sheer rocky edifice of Mount Moon. Most of the topsoul of the mountain as been eroded (or eradicated by meteors) and most of what's left is pure, unforgiving rock. Its impossible to cross above ground, but there's an extensive, stable cave system underground. Its the nest of quite a few pokemon, but the only way to reach Cerulean City.

The caves have a main path that is covered with some soft, tan sand. It winds through the first level of the caves for a long, twisty time, weaving around rock and crystal growths. Holes just off the side of the caves drop down into two lower areas, a basement floor 2 and a basement floor 3. If you fall down one, you can eventually find a ramp to lead you back up, but I wouldn't reccomend it. The caves are a maze and a mess and they're nearly impossible to navigate. Megnetic rocks throw off compasses and dead ends are everywhere. At least there are lots of holes to the surface high above the caves...its well lit most of the time.

If you stick to the main path, you should be out in about 10 hours. If you don't...there's no telling how long you'll be in there.

Word of advice: Don't kick the rocks in frustration. Many of them are pokemon.
Pokemon Center

This little waystation is at the entrance to Mount Moon on the Pewter City side. Its there for weary travellers coming through the path or those prepairing to trek through the caves. Its not much: a long, single floor building with some basic healing equipment, a single PC and transport system, and two long dorms going off of either side, the left one being for the girls and the right one being for the guys. They're not much; a single room lined with cots is all that's available. There are some public hot springs though, and one pool is divided off for each gender to have their privacy. You probably need a bath if you reach here. It's also very good for sick or injured pokemon, or non-injured pokemon as well! Rest your spirit...you're going to need it for the next leg of your journey.

There is a Pidgey coop out front...The only presence PAT has at this station. You can send messages to other trainers by purchasing their services at the front desk with the Pokemon Center attendent.

Canyon Bottom [Route 3]

Long ago a river came out of the northern mountains and ran into Mount Moon. The mountain turned it west and it ran that way for a long time, cutting a winding canyon in the rock. Now that river changed course and is directed down towards Cerulean, and this steep canyon covered in scrubby bushes and grass is the route to Mount Moon. Its a little uneven on the bottom as some rockslides and boulders brought down by the river make it a little hard to tread. On foot the trip through the canyon may take 12-14 hours. Don't worry though, a pokemon center was set up at the end of the canyon and the entrance to Mt. Moon. Its a good place to rest for the night, when you reach it.
