All roads do not lead to Rome. No indeed, in Kanto, all roads lead to Saffron. The large mercantile and techno development town in the center of the region attracts just about everyone, and therefore every nearby spot of any interest possesses a route to the major city. Its grown so much these roads tend to be pretty short on the whole as Saffron approaches a size large enough to swallow its neighbors within its massive borders. Area Pokemon Pidgey (roaming)(common) between levels 18 and 20 Rattata (roaming)(common) between levels 18 and 20 Meowth (roaming)(common) between levels 18 and 20 Pidgeotto (roaming)(uncommon) between the levels of 18 and 20 Ekans (roaming)(uncommon) between levels 17 and 19 Sandshrew (roaming)(uncommon) between levels 17 and 19 Abra (roaming)(uncommon) between levels 15 and 19 Oddish (roaming)(Uncommon) between the levels of 13 and 16 Vulpix (roaming)(rare) between levels 19 and 23 Growlithe (roaming)(rare) between levels 19 and 23 Jigglypuff (roaming)(rare) between levels 19 and 24 Kadabra (roaming)(extremely rare) between levels 20 and 27 Route 8, Lavender to Saffron Route 8, the road connecting Lavender Town to Saffron City, starts as a wide back coming west from Saffron, but as it nears Lavender is reduced to a narrow, unstable road heading through the rocky terrain surrounding Lavender. Understandably, not many people hang out on the eastern part of the route -- it's a three-man path, if you really want to fit as many people as possible side-by-side, but it's best to travel single-file through it, if in a group, to minimize possible injury from the shifting ground. Not many Pokemon remain on this particular section themselves, due in part to the off-and-on traffic of trainers coming by, in addition to the cramped nature of the path. However, Route 8 opens up after no more than a half-hour of walking and opens into a small valley, the mountain ridges slowly receding and then disappearing just before reaching Saffron itself. This part of the path -- far wider, more open, and significantly longer -- takes roughly three hours to traverse, if one does not bother sight seeing. The area is reasonably popular with trainers, due to the fair amount of wild Pokemon found wandering the area and the open nature of the area itself, making it far easier to spot and pursue Pokemon targeted for whatever reason by trainers. Route 5, Cerulean to Saffron Just south of Cerulean City the land is overgrown with trees and woods. It opens up in a short while due to highly rocky ground and frequent travel. The land slopes sharply in a set of steepsided hills down in altitude and down towards the south. There are a couple of well-maintained paths that lead straight down through the hills at an easy pace and they almost guarantee a pokemon-less trip. Rougher off-roading routes allow for an interesting climbing experience down the hill, with steep drop offs and cliff-like climbs, combined with thin tree coverings and thick grasses. Wild encounters there may not be, but there are often a lot of trainers here eager for battle. The path to cerulean and Saffron is frequently traveled by trainers and others alike, as it can be crossed in a short afternoon and is a wonderful way to spend one. At the end of the road, there stand three buildings. One serves as the gatehouse for Saffron City, a long narrow building with an observation deck allowing telescopic viewing of the city and the pristine surrounding countryside. The other is a small cabin, which serves to cover the entrance of the straight lighted tunnel diving beneath Saffron City as a means of crossing the town without the city traffic. This end starts here and opens up in Route 6 (Saffron to Vermilion). The third building is a pokemon daycare center. You don't need this place to breed, but you can leave a pokemon in there care for 100 pk$ a week, paid upfront, or 20$ a day if you don't buy a week care package at once. The nice old Couple running the place loves to care for pokemon, but mostly now their relatives have taken over the business (as they've become rather aged.) Route 6, Saffron to Vermilion The southern gatehouse of Saffron opens up to an observatory which looks down the gentle trail between Saffron and Vermilion. The trail is well traveled and fairly clear, with tall grass bordering a winding trail, lots of open fields dotted with the occasional trees, and several small lakes with a shallow, five-foot wide stream winding between them all and south to the sea. The area takes about 10 hours to traverse, following the trail without fail. The sheer flatness of the land permits you to see the distant skylines of Saffron in the north, Vermilion in the south, Celadon to the northwest, and the mountainous borders of Lavender to the northeast. A bit of sea breeze blows in, but the ocean can't be seen from this route. Trainers and non trainers frequent the grounds. Numerous pokemon make their home in the woods directly to the east and west of the route, and the rivers and lakes teem with pokemon. It may not be very exciting scenery, but it sure is vibrant with life. A small cabin to the north, near the South Gatehouse of Saffron, leads to a tunnel beneath the city that opens up just outside the North Gatehouse in Route 5 (Cerulean to Saffron) Route 7, Saffron to Celadon The two sprawling cities of Saffron and Celadon merge here in a short 45 minute walk from the western gatehouse of Saffron to the eastern edge of Celadon. Unlike most of the areas around Saffron, this short trail full of gentle grassy slopes and occasionally dotted with a few small trees has been preserved from development into suburbia by the governments of both cities, and is maintained as a park. A few single file footpaths lead off at various intervals to hilltop benches or tree covered picnic tables. Pokemon who are used to people and urban environments seem to be the only ones who frequent the area now. Its typically packed with people and trained pokemon on outings away from the city, and contests and competitions of all kinds tend to flare between individuals found in the park, especially between opposing members of the two cities in a mostly friendly rivalry. |
