-This review was originally intended to be posted on Nintendo NSider Forums. You might see some reference to a user named GBA. Ignore it. :]![]() Well, since GBA is done boring you with his review, it is time for the amazing second thoughts. I am happy to announce that I will be writing these second thoughts, and not GBA's alternate account.(Joke?) This will be my third review on Nsider, and I will be counting it as one of my “official reviews”. This means that there will be simply exciting writing but this review will not include my scores and such. Enjoy nevertheless. The history of Pokemon games was described pretty well by the original review writer (GBA), so I shall get right into the juice. Pokemon, being one of the most successful series on a handheld device is back for more action on the Nintendo DS. Although this game didn’t do enough to make me think that Pokemon has taken a step in a new direction, it still delivers a fresh, new adventure that Pokemon fans have been craving for over three years. Pokemon is an RPG game that includes a trainer (you, the player) collecting Pokemon monsters and battling to level them up. Your ultimate goal is to battle and beat all the gym leaders to reach the notorious Pokemon League. Along the way, you have rivals, evil organizations, and hundreds of trainers standing in your way. One thing that bothers me about this game is the lack of change from the earlier games. I disagree with GBA’s statement that this game would take about 20 hours to complete. On a rush play through, the latter of Pokemon players would take about 7 hours. Most beginners would take about 10-15 hours on one play through. Do not worry though; the game is not over yet after you beat the League. You only get to bask in the glory of Pokemon Master for about five minutes as the credits roll. Afterwards, you have battle towers, mountains, and whole new areas to explore. Wait; didn’t I say that this game had a “lack of change” from the earlier games? PROVE IT! Right. Well, the concept is pretty much the same. Beat eight gym leaders, destroy the plans of the evil organization (Team Galaxy in Diamond/Pearl), and become Pokemon champion. Isn’t that what Pokemon is supposed to be though? Yes and no. I was expecting Game Freak to FREAK on this game and make something totally new. Heck, ten gym leaders would have been exciting. I do praise the producers for the vast Pokemon world of Sinnoh which is noticeably much more original than the past regions. There are new features in this new installment though! Online trading, Pokemon contests, and over 100 new Pokemon which add replay value to the game. Online I will save for later. Wait? 100 new Pokemon? That adds up to 493 total. Whoever collects all those Pokemon without cheating should be awarded a Nobel Prize. Honestly, a limit is needed and like GBA said, it should be 150. And why do I need to buy Ranger to get Manaphy? Keep it strictly to the two Pokemon versions released please. The annoying vast amounts of legendaries are back again. You have to three that resemble the birds, dogs, and Regis; you have the two that resemble the big two like Lugia, Ho-oh, Groudon, and Kyogre. WHY do they keep having the same numbers? Change the legendaries up a little. For the visual section of this second thoughts review, I have decided to let the Pokemon decide for themselves. D&P Snorlax: R&S Snorlax: ![]() (D&P Snorlax): Hello [R&S Snorlax]: What now? Are you going to tell me how fat and lazy I am? (D&P Snorlax): No, I’m going to tell you how much better I look in this new game, which took four years to make! [R&S Snorlax]: THIS is how much they improved you in four years? You can get a college degree in that amount of time. (D&P Snorlax): I know. Isn’t amazing? They worked so hard to upgrade my sprite. I think they deserve a Noble prize. In all seriousness, the Pokemon don’t change much. Move animations seem smoother and some small details (female and males look slightly different) made this game stand out from the others. Not by much though. The world is bright and diverse which adds bonus points for what the sprites failed to accomplish (which was improving the past visuals). The 3D elements add a lot to what is going on. One of the better visual aspects of this game. Music? What can I say? Here is an example: Duh Duh Duh Duh Duh Duh Pa Da Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum La La La La La Laaa Laaa Laaa Laa LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA….AAAAAAA That WAS supposed to be battle music. Nothing special again. Same old! Too much old! Just little MIDIs with different tones. When will Pokemon make the big jump? When will things change? Sometimes change is good. Oh well, the producers never learn. But wait? Learn from what? NOTHING. Why? Because Pokemon is still selling. For the people that crave change, not much did in this game. Internet is nice, but doesn’t deliver what was expected. When you have the opportunity to create a game with full online content, why wouldn’t you do that? The GTS (Global Trade Station) allows you to trade Pokemon with players across the world. But the trade isn’t a normal trade, you have to upload your Pokemon and wait until someone decides to take it and upload the Pokemon that you wanted to trade for.Battling isn’t even possible with random people. All you can do is download other player’s uploaded teams and battle with them. Every other feature is limited to friend code use. BLARG! The DS’s touch screen and dual screen features allow this game to take out old problems like long item menus. Menus are easy to scroll through with the handy Pokeball spinner. Just touch the pocket icon in the Bag menu and spin the ball to scroll the menu. Choosing moves during battle works great with the thumb size buttons on the touch screen. (I don’t recommend using thumbs to choose moves while eating Cheetos though.) All in all, it feels like a rehashed adventure of the past Pokemon games. The little features that the DS added to the Pokemon series work well, but I believe that the DS can handle updated visuals to that of Mario 64. The music lacks substance (Team Galactic battle on Mt. Coronet is an exception) and could use more flair. Change the pace already. This series feels like a guy jogging on the same road for a million miles. Take a turn and try something new. SPECIAL SECTION: What my cat Tom thinks of this game: (yes, he actually typed this) JhfvmnxzfrthjnzaSSsdeeevc mukluk mgft jkmkfcccccccccccccccccccchbgggggggggggg ggcddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd dddddddfvggggggggggggggggggggggggggggbvopbujbv hb hjnb yhfrvc yhbn uijkm ikmj hjmn gftbvfrvtbng tmn o LOOK!
