Pokémon Declaration

Finally! The two brothers, Noah and his older sibling Mathew, had travelled many different areas around Cascadia City in order to find a lovely, little Pokémon for Noah. Unfortunately, every wild creature was scared as soon as they saw Noah. Was there any reason for this behaviour? Probably yes. Most Pokémon would definitely not be happy to see a young guy rapidly running towards them, waving his hands through the air, or shouting different comments to befriend these little, innocent creatures. Today, when visiting Reedriver Bridge, everything has to change! Noah would try to avoid redoing his mistakes: In Serenity Lake, he was to hectic; in Clearchime Monastery, he was too loud and got even scolded by the monks; in the Delphic Temple, his psychic powers were too none-existing and every Pokémon ignored him; in the Icicle Caverns, rumours of a young boy hunting down wild Pokémon who did not hide fast enough had already spread in this region resulting in practically all creatures hiding in the depths of snow. For today, he had a master plan! Most Pokémon were scared of him and did not understand that he wanted their best, definitely! Therefore, the young Lacroix planned to be even friendlier, more active, and a brighter appearance! If his hyperactivity would just increase, most Pokémon would try again fleeing, but if they dared to do this, either their brother needed to attack them with his Pokémon, or Noah had to corner them and catch them afterwards! Today, this method needs to be a success- it was time for him to get some sort of a partner.

The weather at this bridge was good, the sun was standing high in the sky, and no cloud dared to cover the great fireball. It would definitely be a good day to relax and enjoy nature, but today, Noah had some work to do! After catching some wild creature, he could still take some time to relax.

”Okay Noah, what do you think about this piece of land?” It was Mathew who asked while standing on the bridge, showing down on the river. ”If I remember correctly, you should be able to find some water-type Pokémon here, but other types as well. I crossed this Bridge once while travelling with my Chimchar.”

As soon as the word ‘Chimchar’ was spoken, a little ape climbed up the balustrade and looked on the area, putting on a big smile. ”Don’t you agree, Monferno? This brings back some memories.” The little Chimchar had evolved into a Monferno a while ago and was eager to experience some adventures. Just like Noah.

”What do I think about it? It looks good and as long as we finally catch a partner for me, I’m going to be happy.” Like the Monferno, Noah was leaning over the balustrade and looked down on the river and its bank. ”So push yourself Monferno, I’m counting on you!”

Without any further words, Noah started running towards the grassy fields. From on top, he could not really see any wild Pokémon. Did they honestly think they could hide from Noah? Than they did not knew him! ”I’m coming, my little friends! Everybody who wants to have a nice place to live shall come see me!”

Meanwhile, Mathew was still standing on the bridge and Monferno was happy, cheering Noah. ”My little brother how he is. Let’s go Monferno, we have to babysit him before he does any stupid stuff.” Slowly, both Mathew and his partner followed Noah. What the day might hold?

After a little running, Noah reached the grassland before the river started. He started immediately to search for wild creatures. There needs to be something he could catch! ”Hey Noah, keep calm. If you hurry to much you just scare Pokémon. Or even worse, you make them angry and lure them into attacking you. Do you want that? I cannot always protect you.”

As it seemed, Mathew had caught up to his brother. ”Don’t blame me if you are so slow. You could need some more sports to get fit. Up to now I could take care of me myself, so what could happen?” Obviously, Noah was not scared at all. Did he fear being attacked by a wild animal? Not really.

”Carefree as ever. You want to know what could happen? You could get attacked by something strong enough to be of harm for you or get stuck in the river and risk drowning. If you want that fell free and go ahead.”

Right now, Noah ignored this commentary. He knew the risks, of course. But why should he fear them? He is in nature, being attacked is a risk of travelling and if that would be too much for him, Noah should better stay at home studying. He wanted to see the world and wished to travel with a variety of lovely Pokémon! With a variety of his own lovely Pokémon! And in order to achieve this goal, he needed to find a suitable partner.

”Where should I start searching? I could definitely find something in the reed... hopefully.” Without any hesitation Noah walked into the high reed near the river. Immediately he felt the silt beneath his feed and heard the steady noise of the river. What would happen if he felt in their? Probably best to not imagine a horrible thing like this. Maybe it helps to think positive? Did Pokémon felt such feelings and were more willing to join a trainer if he felt in such a way? If so, Noah had good chances to find a partner.

The young Lacroix hoped almost desperately to find some sort of Pokémon... but somehow all seemed to avoid the young boy’s area. How could he change this?

In the next moment, Noah heard some rustling beside him. What was their? ”I’ll catch you!” After screaming, different birds flew in the air, Noah jumped forward and felt something furry. Something hot. ”Got you!”

However, the luck was not on Noah’s side. He caught a Pokémon, but not a wild one. Beneath him laid his brother’s Monferno. ”Would you please calm down, Noah? Monferno is here to protect you. Would you please not go without it in the reeds?”

Noah nodded unwillingly. His brother was right, of course. But did he need to know this? ”Okay.” This little word was everything that was unwillingly pronounced by him. ”Can you smell or fell something, Monferno? Any Pokémon?” As if his words were heard, the ape pointed in a direction. Noah’s mood immediately improved.

”I’m off. Thanks! I’ll catch you, whoever you are!” And so Noah started running through the field of reed. After a short trip, Noah saw a little Tympole laying on the ground, willing to jump in the water. And so occurred what had to occur. The wild Pokémon jump into the water, Noah followed him, and grabbed its fin. ”Got you!” Catching a Pokémon was near; unfortunately, the young boy miscalculated his plan a bit. Together with the polliwog, he felt in the strong river. Both should be good swimmers- but as both were hindered in their movements (Noah had no intention to let the Pokémon’s fin off), this situation might take some drastic turning point. Would somebody drown today?

A few seconds ago, Noah finally found a wild Pokémon and now he finds himself in the middle of the strong river. His clothes were completely wet and increased his weight. He needed to leave this river or otherwise he had serious problems. Even though his situation seemed a bit desperate, Noah had no intention to let the Tympole’s fin go. Finally he ‘controlled’ a Pokémon in some way- how should he knew it would not flee as soon as it had the chance? A water type had probably less problems swimming in this river than a human, so he definitely would have fewer problems saving himself than Noah had.

”You cannot pull me to land by chance?” Even being in such a dangerous situation, the young boy started joking. Of course the Pokémon could not do it- it was by far too small and weak to pull a human being. But maybe it had some friends who were near him and could help him? Probably not, this would be too much of a coincidence. Noah started smiling- it seemed he enjoyed this situation in some way. He even had some fun and did not really worry.

Noah lost his orientation. He knew that he was in the river and in which direction he travelled- but the water carried him so fast he had no idea how far he had travelled yet. Maybe just a few meters or maybe he already covered a great distance. At first he heard Mathew shouting in panic because he was worried (and most probably tried to already lecture his younger brother), but as distance grew between the two siblings, and the river produced a lot of noise, Noah had difficulties to understand what his brother shouted. After a while he just heard the splashing sound of the water.

Noah used his two legs and his left arm to stay somehow over water but he already felt how he lost his strength. He needed his right arm- he was near the bank so with his remaining strength, he could manage to get on land. But if he used his right arm, the Tympole could flee. Should he risk this? He was near catching a Pokémon! I mean, he could do it in the midst of this river... surrounded by water... there was definitely some way to do this, hopefully.

Fate seemed to start acting. Noah’s grip unfastened a bit and the Tympole used its chance. It moved forward and was freed. Noah was shocked. ”Don’t you dare to run away! You’re going to be my partner!” The little Tympole swam around Noah and seemed to follow him. Noah started concentrating on getting on land. He had no difficulties getting near land- but he was unable to grab something. He found nothing that could hold him. Panic spread in his body, at least a bit.

After beginning to lose hope, Noah found something solid, grabbed it, and pulled himself out of the water. He did it! Completely wet and exhausted, but he was saved. He was living! Exhausted he laid spread-eagled on the ground. He felt something uncomfortable beneath him, but did not really paid attention to it. He took deep breathes to regain strength.

”Tympole?” The little Pokémon was besides Noah and looked interested. Noah wished to say something, but he now missed his breath. In a few moments, he could talk.

”That was fun, wasn’t it? Still hanging around with me?” Tympole made no intentions to leave Noah. ”Wanna join me?” How would the Pokémon react? This definitely had to wait a bit- Noah suddenly heard some rustling in the reeds. Was this his Brother?

Noah had lain calmly on his back and was completely exhausted when he started to hear some rustling in the reeds surrounding him. What was that? ”Mathew? Monferno?” His voice was quieter than he wished it to be. Should he run? Right now he had hardly any strength left- he would already have difficulties to move. Running would almost be impossible. Whatever moved towards him did not react. It just moved and moved, giving no hint what it was. Definitely nothing friendly...

Noah needed to do something- he did not want to give up so easily. He mobilized some power and rolled on his belly. Afterwards he could see what was so uncomfortable laying on: a bird’s nest. ”Darn. I think I have an idea what’s coming...” Tympole was still near Noah. Why was it still here? ”Don’t you want to go? This could become ugly.”

The polliwog made no intention to move. Curiously it looked at the boy. Meanwhile, Noah somehow managed to stand. Somehow he regained some of his strength. Somehow he would be able to overcome this situation. ”If you don’t go soon you have to become my partner. No Return, however.” Tympole was still looking interested what the boy would do. Maybe he had finally found a partner? At least it does not run away now; it only tried to do so when it first saw the Lacroix. Maybe it changed its mind? ”As you haven’t complained, I declare you my partner. I’ll-”

Noah had no time to continue talking. A bird’s cry echoed through the area, the rustling in the reeds drastically increased, and a few seconds later a bird flight out of them, targeting Noah. ”Here it comes!”

Wild Encounter

As the attack began, Noah could identify the Pokémon: a wild Farfetch'd. It did not appeared to be very aggressive, neither seemed it do be very self-confident. Maybe it wanted to protect its nest’s leftovers. Noah had to dodge- an attack was nothing he wanted to endure. While somehow moving (or falling in his case) to the side, Noah would have been able to dodge (maybe), but the Tympole started moving. It jumped before Noah willing to protect him and started growling. It was really willing to help him! Him, who treated the Tympole not so good a few minutes ago, received its help!

The first clash came rapidly. Tympole got hit by the Farfetch’d’s beak, while the polliwog’s growling resulted in lowering the bird’s physical attack. But being in close combat, the Farfetch’d had no intention of letting Noah or the Tympole go. The little bird raised its leek stalk high above its head to prepare the next attack; the stalk started to glow, before the Farfetch’d started its next attack: Fury cutter. But Tympole prepared a counterattack as well: In close combat it fired some bubbles. Both attacks stroke each Pokémon and they were blown away a bit. A short distance was created between both creatures and they started staring each other down.

The combat between both Pokémon had just started. Noah stood perplexed and watched the situation. Before him fought two wild Pokémon! The little Tympole was willing to protect Noah without even being his partner. Maybe he had finally found a suitable one?

Noah found himself in a situation he would not have imagined a few days ago. Somehow he expected to be attacked by some wild creatures- but at the same time, he had expected that Mathew would be near him in order to defeat every ill-bred Pokémon who dared attacking Noah. As this was obviously not the case when the Farfetch’d attacked him, Noah needed some time to understand that a wild Tympole who was not yet his partner protected him.

The two creatures starring had stopped. Both had a few meters distance between each other when both prepared their next move. The bird started flying and had shining eyes; it seemed it wished to lower the Tympoles defence. But the polliwog did not just look what happened: instead of just watching, it fired some more bubbles; unfortunately, each and every missed.

Luckily Tympole was able to cope with Farfetch’d- but it had already taken some hits and started to get exhausted. Noah needed to do something! But what could he do? Tympole’s defence was lowered- even having an opponent with decreased strength it had less health than the bird and sooner or later would get into problems. The Farfetch’d’s leek stalk started glowing again and it moved into close combat. ”Tympole, dodge!” Motivated out of desperation he started ordering the Tympole. Perhaps it would obey him? At least Noah hoped the Pokémon would do that. And it did! It jumped in the air and the leek had to hammer down on earth. ”Very good, now counter with a bubble!” With some ordering the Tympole might be able to defeat the opponent. Bubbles were fired; they splashed and exploded while hitting the bird. It really seemed that Tympole was following Noah’s command!

Both participants in this fight had equally taken hits, but the Farfetch’d seemed to be in better health. The last attack was dodged, but being in the air could develop worse- Tympole had few possibilities to dodge. As if Farfetch’d heard Noah’s thoughts its stalk shined again, intensifying in its colour and it planned on attacking Tympole. Dodging would almost be impossible. ”Tympole, decrease its attack with Growl!” As commanded, a loud noise filled the area; however, Tympole got hit and pushed on the ground.

Tympole lay on the ground and started to be exhausted. It could take another one or two hits- a third would definitely be too much. What should Noah do? The bird flied down to the polliwog, flattered with its wings, and raised dust. It wanted to lower Tympole’s accuracy and field of sight! But how could he stop that? Tympole took the turn and emitted a shrill and loud noise. Was that Growl? No, this needed to be something else. But what was it? The Farfetch’d had no chance to dodge and seemed utterly confused. Supersonic! This confusion could be enough to end this fight. Noah thought of an attack, as he already heard a familiar voice.

”It’s enough!” Out of the reeds stepped a familiar person: Mathew accompanied by his partner Monferno. They finally found Noah! Now this situation could change at least!

Everything could change positively. Mathew appeared and Monferno was the first to jump out of the reeds. It just waited for his trainer’s command to attack. Monferno was strong; it should be able to easily defeat the Farfetch’d if necessary. The little duck was still confused and just hit in the air. In this condition it had severe problems fighting; however, this condition should not last very long.

But Mathew wished to finish this fight once and for all. Tympole started no attack; it was still shocked for seeing an unknown Pokémon and person. Noah was just happy to see his brother and forgot to order his potential partner. Luckily, Mathew decided to end this nuisance. Without any commentary, a Poké Ball was thrown towards the confused Farfetch’d. Did Mathew wish to have a second Pokémon? This could explain the catching attempt. But what should Noah say? Somehow this bird was his pray! Even though he got attacked and not vice versa.

”Hey Mathew, I wanted to befriend this Pokémon as well! Don’t catch it without asking!” A Poké Ball laid on the ground, slowly shaking from one side to the other. It took a while, but the Farfetch’d seemed to be too weak to free himself; the shaking stopped, a “ping” was heard and the Pokémon caught.

”Sorry, but that’s life. I already thought of catching a Pokémon on this journey- and this one is of quite a rare species. But if you want, feel free to play with him as long as you don’t catch a Pokémon yourself. What’s up with that Tympole?” Mathew seemed to be willing to defeat it as well if he had to. Sometimes he could be merciless.

”Don’t you dare doing any harm to it! He protected me from the Farfetch’d after I... well... destroyed its home and made it angry.” Now Noah had something to do himself. ”So Tympole, do you still want to join me?”

Noah gazed at the little Pokémon. It made no sign of refusal, luckily. ”As you wish, partner!” Now he threw a Poké Ball himself, but Tympole did not refuse. It was caught! Finally, Noah had his own partner! ”Woooohooooooooooo!”

”Mathew, that’s the way you befriend a Pokémon!” Without hesitation, Noah let his partner out of his ball. All the tension was blown away, but it was replaced by exhaustion. Now he laid spread-eagled on the ground and Tympole sit next to him. ”Okay partner, you need a nickname. How should I call you?”

Meanwhile, Mathew walked to his brother's side and let the Farfetch’d out of his ball. At that time, Noah took a look at his partner and through the light its blue colour became an azure tone. ”I got it! I’ll call you Azure. Welcome on board!” After this was decided,it was Mathew’s time to speak. ”Congratulation for your first Pokémon, Noah. Azure, please take good care of my little brother. He is naive, careless, and often clumsy. If you let him do what he wants, he’ll definitely get in some problems. And now it’s time for a little lecture, my dear brother.” Noah had to explain how he got into problems and heard some complaints. But as one might imagine, Noah was not really impressed by these complaints. He had fun, wasn’t that what counted?

”Okay Noah, now it’s time to take care of your health. You’re completely cold and need some dry clothes. It’s getting late, so we’re camping here. Monferno and I prepare a campfire, and you undress your wet clothes and take care of the Pokémon, okay?” Noah agreed and did as he was told. Soon he sat there just in his shorts while Mathew and Monferno gathered some wood. After a while, the ape spit some fire and lighted the wood. Noah immediately felt how his body regained some temperature and strength. For him, everything developed the way he had wished. Maybe expect the fact of almost drowning.

”Sorry for destroying your home, Farfetch’d. But I think you found a good trainer. Not as good as I am, but acceptable.” After this apology and joke, the day could end. Tomorrow they could go back to Cascadia City. Then, after some preparation, his adventure could finally begin! What the journey might hold for Noah and Azure? He was ready for any obstacle that might come!
