Syrian stopped her bike just as she reached the edge of the road leading up the Reed River. The arching, artistic Reedriver Bridge towered over the wide river, several travelers and trainers visible walking across the historic landmark. Syr's heart sunk as she looked at the step bridge. It had stairs. STAIRS. On a bridge. How in the world was she going to get her bike over the stairs? If she couldn't get her bike across this bridge, how in the world would she get across the river? She couldn't exactly ride her bike over the top of the water! She groaned, and looked around at the rest of the scene before her. Other travelers could be seen at the banks of the river, playing at the river's edge, or just laying out on the beach with their pokemon. There were also fishermen at the banks, and trainers attempting to fish but failing miserably. It had been three days since Syr's journey in the Rottshade Woods -no, the name had changed, she'd learned! It was now the Kagereta Woods. The change was confusing for Syr, she'd known several locations by different names all her life, but now they were different and confusing. Even Sternhall City and Grengrothe's names had been changed. Sternhall had changed to 'Sangpoker' or some such nonsense, and Grengrothe to Wistuer? Winef? Wistuffly? Syr wasn't really sure. During her travels to the Reed River, the weather had noticeably changed to winter. It was significantly colder than it had been in previous months, and it had even snowed on her way in. Today wasn't so bad though; the sun was out, and while the air still had the chilly bite of winter, it wasn't too frigid. Though, how on earth people could be playing in the water was beyond Syr. She didn't like the cold at all, and was currently bundled up in warm winter clothes to keep out the chill. Luckily for the crazies, the Reed River was too large and the current was too fast for the river to freeze over, at least not this early in winter. Syr swung her leg over the bike, dismounting from where she had been simply balancing on the bike's seat, thoughts racing through her mind. Besides her concerns over the chilly weather, she was worried about Dog. The old man had been right in cautioning her to go see a nurse in the city. Despite the herbal remedies that had seemed to work for Dog, soon after Syr had left the Kagereta Woods, Dog had fallen ill once more. It didn't seem to be affecting him quite so much as before, and the poison didn't seem to be spreading as quickly, but her Houndour was still clearly feeling not-himself. He wasn't able to stomach much of anything, and what he did manage to get down was more often than not vomited back up. Syr had taken to simply keeping Dog in his pokeball, simply to spare him the effort of walking around and irritating his wounds further. Syr sighed as she wheeled her bike closer to the river, off the road that led up to the bridge. She'd decided to let her pokemon out to enjoy the fresh, crisp air, and maybe get a bath or two in for them. She knew that Venen definitely needed one, after he had decided to roll around in a mud puddle yesterday evening, and Belle was always hugging the Croagunk, so she was certain to need one as well. Syr made her way to a more secluded part of the river before setting down her bike and supplies. She rummaged through her bags, pulling out several towels, including an extra-long beach towel that she laid on the sandy bank next to her bike. The other towels, she folded and put next to the beach towel, intending them to be put to use in drying off her pokemon after their baths. Then she reached for her pokeballs and released her pokemon one-by-one. First to come out were her Ferroseed, Loki, and her as-of-yet unnamed Phantump. Loki immediately started rolling on the ground, causing sand to start spraying everywhere, including all over Syr's beach towel. "Hey! Watch where you're spraying the sand!" Syr exclaimed in exasperation, snatching up the beach towel and snapping it out, trying to get the sand off of it. Loki stopped rolling for a moment to give Syr the stink-eye before rolling farther away and proceeding to continue spraying sand everywhere. Syr sighed, shaking her head. The Phantump had watched the entire exchange with her head cocked sideways in confusion. In the past few days since Syr had caught the ghostly pokemon, she had come to know the Phantump as a mischevious but rather clueless pokemon. She didn't seem to grasp concepts beyond scaring people or pokemon, and when her pranks went too far, she would get confused and bewildered at pain or extreme emotional distress. Syr had yet to name the mischeivous spirit, not wanting to rush into naming the Phantump when she had no good name for the ghostly pokemon. As evidenced by Loki's rather pointed glares, he did not appreciate any attempts at obvious names. Whenever he heard her other pokemon's names, he would roll his eyes and give Syr a glare, particularly when it came to Dog's name. As a consequence, Syr had actually stopped to think before giving the Phantump a name like 'Phantom' -or rather, since the Phantump was female, 'Phantasma.' She'd never really put a lot of thought into giving her pokemon names, and before Loki, her pokemon hadn't raised objections to the rather unoriginal names she gave them. But Loki's irritation had opened Syr's eyes to the possibility that she was doing her pokemon a great disservice by simply naming them the first thing that came to mind about them. Syr watched the Phantump float over to the still-rolling Loki and look down at the Ferroseed strangely. She shook her head and proceeded to release her other pokemon from their pokeballs. Roll Pokemon Declaration! Syrian smiled at her pokemon as they milled about the sandy beach along the river. Belle was looping over the water, dancing in the air gracefully without a care in the world. Syr couldn't help but smile at the bug's antics. Belle was a silly pokemon, to say the least. Meanwhile, Loki was still rolling around in the sand, spraying everything near him with more sand. Syr just shook her head at the steel-bug pokemon. She didn't understand Loki very much, but he would certainly make her life different being on her team of pokemon. She had yet to test him out in battle though, and she wondered how he would fair. He was certainly a vicious attacker, she remembered with a wince towards the ankle he had torn up in her first meeting with the bad-tempered ferroseed. Syr moved her gaze on from the rolling ferroseed to where Venen was laying out across one of the beach towels she had set up, along with Dog, still looking a little pale, and he coughed every few moments, as if he had a cold. Syr rolled over so that she was closer to Dog. She patted his head sympathetically. "Once we get to Dianette, we'll get you to the Pokemon Center. For now, just take it easy, ok, boy?" Dog looked up at her and wagged his tail slowly, thumping it against the sand twice before laying his head back down and falling asleep. Syr smiled at her first pokemon indulgently, then looked up and around. She hadn't seen her phantump in her survey of her pokemon! Where was the mischievous ghost-type? She looked this way and that, and at first she didn't see her errant pokemon. Then she noticed her phantump floating over the water, in the shade of the great step bridge. She seemed to be stalking something in the water. "Phantump!" Syrian called, standing up. The phantump either didn't hear her, or ignored her as it continued floating over the water, and then suddenly it shrieked, plunging into the water. Syr let out a cry of shock, convinced that her pokemon had been attacked by some water pokemon in the river, and she hurried over to the scene. She kicked off her shoes and pulled off her socks, tossing them aside before plunging into the water, splashing towards where her phantump had disappeared under the water, not paying attention to the way the water pulled at her clothes, thoroughly soaking them in its slimy brine. "Phantump!" Syrian called again, looking down at the water, desperate for any sign of her pokemon. She might not have had the phantump for long, but the phantump was still her pokemon, and thus her responsibility. If anything happened to any of her pokemon, Syrian would be devastated. There was no sign of her pokemon, and Syrian could feel the beginning of a lump start in her throat. "Phantump!" She cried, splashing around with her arms, trying to find the ghost type pokemon in the water. Then, a few paces away, water began to bubble up to the surface, and suddenly her phantump broke the surface, grappling with a dark shape in the water. Syrian watched in shock as a carvanha leapt out of the water, biting at her phantump's cloaked skin. "Phantump, use Confuse Ray on the carvanha, shake it off!" Syrian called, splashing through the river so that she stood next to the battle, but far enough away that she wouldn't get hit. The phantump let out an eerie cry, and twin ghostly lights appeared and circled the carvanha, twisting around the dark pokemon and hitting its skin, causing the fish to shake its head in sudden confusion. "Alright, now use Astonish!" Syrian called encouragingly. The phantump nodded and suddenly disappeared into thin air, before manifesting itself behind the carvanha and shrieking right next to its ear holes, causing the fish to jump in surprise and shudder in a flinch. "Ok, now use growth," Syrian ordered, deciding it would be best to boost the phantump's attack and defense before using a physical hit against the dark fish pokemon. She knew from her studies that carvanha were known for their tough and rough skin, that could sometimes hurt the attacking pokemon. The phantump gave another eerie cry before suddenly doubling in size before returning to her original size, glowing all the while. The confused carvanha attempted an attack at her ghost, but missed by a long shot, hitting itself in the head against the side of the bridge while doing so. "Ok, now use tackle! Keep tackling him until he's out for the count!" Syrian encouraged her pokemon. The phantump dove at the carvanha, using all of her body strength to slam into the fish pokemon. The carvanha let out a cry of pain before biting down on the phantump's body. The phantump was now the one letting out a cry of pain, but she ripped herself from the jaws of the carvanha and flew into the air before diving down again and again, striking the fish pokemon once, twice, three times before the carvanha let out a frustrated cry and dove under the water. "Watch out for a sneak attack!" Syrian warned her pokemon, suspecting trickery. She was right to be concerned, for the carvanha leapt out of the water a moment later, a jet of water behind it as it rammed straight for the phantump, water forming a spear of attack for the dark fish pokemon to hit the phantump with. The phantump waited until the carvanha was almost on top of her before suddenly fading out of sight, appearing behind the carvanha and giving it a scare. The carvanha wailed, and fell into the water, splashing around dramatically before falling limp and disappearing beneath the surface of the water. Syrian sighed in relief. "Oh thank goodness! Are you hurt at all?" She asked her phantump in concern. The phantump shook her head, though she panted and looked like she had been drained of energy. "Oh, come here," Syrian said, engulfing the ghost type in a hug, not caring that the ghost was cold to the touch. "Well, the good thing about this battle is that I've thought of a good name for you!" Syr said brightly, letting go of the phantump. "I was inspired by the way you kept disappearing like a spectre. Spectra shall be your new name!" She announced happily. Spectra let out a happy cry, and twirled in the air, seemingly excited by her trainer's happiness. "Come on, let's get out of the water," Syr said, looking down at her soaked clothes. "I'll have to change, too. You gave me quite a scare, Spectra! Don't run off like that again, ok? You really worried me." Spectra nodded her head obediently, but privately was thinking that she'd had so much fun that she'd of course do it again. Battle Summary! Word Count: 1,152 |

Syrian and the newly-named Spectra got out of the river, and Syrian flopped to the ground on her beach towels, sighing loudly. "Well that was stressful." She announced to her traveling companions. Dog lifted his head and gave Syrian a look that stated that he couldn't believe she was the one that was stressed from the battle. Spectra just gave a cheerful cry and nodded, floating down next to Syr and laying down casually, with her tiny paws going behind her neck, mimicking Syrian as best as she could. Syr snorted at the image the phantump made. "Silly," she said, poking the phantump in the belly softly. Spectra let out a breathy giggle and wiggled her arms back and forth in a display of helpless laughter. Syrian laughed with her pokemon, finding the situation quite humorous. Belle danced over in the air, tinkling like, well, a bell. She danced in the air above Syrian, flipping and turning, swaying her hips this way and that. Syrian clapped at the show. Then she looked around at Venen. "Well, it's time for your bath, Venen. Yours too, Belle. You're both covered in mud!" Syr announced. Venen looked up from his lying position on the ground and rolled over, shaking his head and laying prone on the ground. Syr gave a half-hearted glare at Venen. "Get up right now, mister!" she said sternly. "You are getting a bath whether you like it or not!" Venen threw Syr a blank look and refused to budge. "So you wanna go about it that way, huh?" Syr muttered to herself. She stood up and collected herself. She was still soaking wet from her dip in the river, but she figured there was no point in changing until she had gotten her pokemon's baths out of the way. She walked over to Venen, who was still slumped on the ground. "Come on!" She grunted as she attempted to pick up the large pokemon with little success. The croagunk was just too heavy for Syr to pick up or move very far. Which was what Venen was apparently counting on, for he gave Syrian a cocky grin. She huffed angrily. Then a sly grin crossed her face. "Dog?" she called. Dog looked up, wagging his tail. "Give Venen here a little persuasion, fire-style, hmm?" She said, raising her eyebrows. Dog huffed in a sort of laugh before launching an ember at the stubborn croagunk, who jumped up immediately upon the ember striking him and jumping into the water. "Hah, that's what I thought," Syr laughed, taking a brush over to the croagunk and scrubbing along his mud-caked back. Venen shot her a glare but put up with the cleaning. Syr scrubbed the brush all over the croagunk's body to clean him off. The slimy river water wasn't the best water to clean him off in, but it would at least get the mud off of him for now until they could get proper grooming in the city. "Come on Belle, it's your turn now!" Syrian called. Belle floated over amicably enough, twirling in the air. "Well, get in the water, silly pokemon." Syr said. Belle lowered herself into the water gently, and Syr took the brush to her fuzzy body, getting the mud off of her beautiful fur. "Look at that, much better." Syr commented when she finished cleaning off Belle. She took a look over at Loki, who was now covered with sand. "Hey, Loki!" She called. Loki turned in the sand to give her a cold glare, obviously stating that he would NOT be joining them in the water at all. "Come on Loki, everyone's getting a bath, not just you," she called cheerfully. She didn't want to get near those thorns while he was mad, though, and she doubted the fire trick would work on him, more like just get him even more mad. Loki turned and ignored his trainer. Syr sighed. "Loki...." She wasn't sure how to get the stubborn steel type into the water. Come to think of it, he would probably sink in the water. That wouldn't be good. "What if I just bring over the brush and at least get the sand off of you?" She dragged herself out of the water and up to Loki. The ferroseed turned his glare on her, growling now. "Ugh fine, if you want to be that way, you can clean yourself off!" Syr said, throwing her hands into the air. She crossed the beach to where Dog lay on the beach towel. "Come on Dog, it's your turn." Syr leaned down and patted the sick houndour on the side. Dog rose his head into the air and whined pitifully, giving Syrian the puppy eyes, begging not to have to go into the water. "Oh, no. Not you too. What is with you 'mon and not wanting to be clean? Come on Dog, don't you want to make me happy?" Dog gave a long sigh, and heaved himself to his feet unsteadily, and padded over to the river's edge and let Syr brush him clean. "Ok, now it's your turn Spectra!" she called to her phantump, who gave an eerie cry and floated over to the water and splashed around. Syr sighed as her hair was soaked by the splashing phantump. "I hope your happy, now every bit of me is soaked. Good job," she said sarcastically. Spectra just gave a happy cry and returned to splashing around. "Come here you nut," Syr grinned fondly. She brushed the phantump all over with the brush and then walked out of the river. "Ugh. Now I'm the one who needs a bath. But I won't get one until we get to Dianette... I'm definitely setting up a spa day when we get there," she hummed aloud. "Ok, I'm going up to the restroom to change into clean, non-soaked clothes. Dog, look after our stuff." Dog shook himself off from the river water, and sat by her bike dutifully, as Syr's other pokemon continued what they were doing before their baths. Syrian went up to the restroom, clean clothes in hand, and changed quickly in a stall, grateful to get the ill-fitting, soaked clothes off of her. Then she returned to her beach towel and laid out her soaking wet clothes to dry in the sun before she put them away in her pack. Thankfully, it was a sunny day for winter, and it wasn't too cold. At least it wasn't snowing, and the river hadn't frozen over yet. The river water had been cold, though. Syr lay on her beach towel, and enjoyed soaking up the sun while she could. Syr couldn't help but fall asleep beneath the warm sun, and soon she was snoozing beneath the bright sky, stretched out on her beach towel, her pokemon around her. Dog lay by her side, keeping an eye on the situation, and making sure to look at their stuff, taking his role as guard seriously, coughing still every once in a while. Venen lay on the other side of Syr, working on a sun tan, flipping over to make sure the sun baked him evenly. Spectra was cooing over Loki, who was still throwing up sand everywhere. He seemed determined to spray all the people on the beach with sand. Most people just shook off the sand with a laugh, while others just looked at the pokemon with annoyance, throwing his sleeping trainer a dirty look for not controlling her pokemon. Meanwhile, Belle had taken to dancing over the river water again, jumping through the air and twirling dramatically. A small horn popped up from the water below Belle, and a goldeen could be seen looking up at the illumise in fascination. The goldeen blew bubbles happily at the illumise, splashing around gracefully in her own parody of a dance. Belle giggled with the tinkling of bells at the fish pokemon, and proceeded to show off her dance moves in the air. The goldeen did the same, but in the water. Soon the two pokemon were having a dance-off, each trying to outdo the other in their dance moves. Syr awoke at some point during the dance-off, and was promptly greeted to the sight of her illumise dancing with a goldeen on the surface of the river. Syr shook her head fondly, smiling at the pair of pokemon indulgently. "Oh Belle, did you find a friend?" she asked happily. Belle turned to Syr in mid-dance move and nodded her head vigorously, buzzing joyfully. Syr laughed with her pokemon, finding the situation to be endearing. On the pokemon's side, the goldeen was very happy with her new friend. She had been looking to put together a dance team of sorts for a while now, but no pokemon had wanted to do it with her. Then she found this illumise, who was not only willing, but a great dancer, at that! She bubbled a query to the illumise, and the illumise bobbed her head, buzzing happily. On Belle's part, she was simply happy to run into a friendly face after the events of the last few days. Loki was still grumpy to anyone and everyone in sight, and Spectra just liked to scare everyone. Venen was nice enough, but he did get her dirty, which Belle did not appreciate. She was happy to run into a friend that liked to dance as much as she did. At the goldeen's query, she flipped in the air and buzzed joyfully, assuring the goldeen that her trainer would love to have a new friend on the team. The goldeen bubbled happily at the news, and used her water aura to swim in the air over to where Syr was sitting. She bobbed her head and poked at Syr's belt, where the pokeballs of her team were. Syr was surprised. Another pokemon wanted to be a part of her team, without her even doing anything to deserve it. She felt honored. "Of course you can join my team," she said happily, taking out a great ball and clicking the middle button to prime it before tossing it in the air at the goldeen. It sucked the goldeen inside, and shook a little before clicking its success. Syr released her newly-caught goldeen and smiled down at her. "Welcome to the team! I have a perfect name for you... Serene." The goldeen bubbled happily at the new name, and Syr couldn't help but giggle at the happiness on her pokemon's face. "Awesome. Now I have a full team of pokemon. Now I just have to train you up. We'll be unstoppable. My dad won't know what hit him!" Syr declared in determination. Her pokemon all looked up at her for a moment, caught in the moment of their trainer's determination. Word Count: 691 |

"Well I guess it's time to drag this bike up and over the bridge..." Syr said, not at all enthused about having to drag her bicycle up and over the huge step bridge that made up the Reedriver Bridge attraction. She gathered up her beach towels, folded them up and secured them inside her packs on the back of her bicycle. Her pokemon crowded around her as she wheeled her bike over to the bottom of the bridge and looked up at the steps with a huge sigh. Then she began the struggle of pulling her bike up the steps of the bridge. She grunted and groaned, pulling with all her strength, heaving the bike up several steps before taking a break, breathing heavily from the strain. She pulled more at the bike, going backward up the steps of the bridge as she strained with the bike. She noticed several passersby laughing at her, and she glared at them. How rude some people were, instead of helping a struggling person, just to laugh at them! Dog suddenly appeared at the end of the bike, and started pushing. With the two of them working together, they were able to get the bike up a few more steps. "T-thanks, Dog," Syr huffed, starting to get exhausted. It was hard work, heaving the bike with all of her stuff on it over the bridge. Her other pokemon appeared, all of them, even Loki, using their strength to push against the bike as she pulled it up. "Heh, t-thanks g-guys..." Syr sighed as they finally got the bike up and over the last step to the top of the bridge. "Now to get it down the bridge...." Syr grumbled to herself. At least it wouldn't be as hard as pulling it up the bridge. She began the descent, slowly wheeling her bike down the steps, her stuff bouncing around with each step down. At least she had secured her stuff with ropes before she had attempted this maneuver. Syr finally got the bike over the bridge and she put the kickstand down, before letting go of her bike, leaning over with exertion. "Ugh.... I'll bet that trip would have been easy and pretty if not for the bike," She said. "I guess that's the price I have to pay for ease of travel." She wiped the sweat off her forehead. "Well now that that part is out of the way, we can probably just hang out some more. It's not like I'm in a big hurry to get to Dianette." She wheeled her bike over to the grass on the other bank of the river, and sat down next to the bike, her pokemon crowding around her as she looked out across the river. There were plenty of tourists splashing about in the shallows of the river, along with their pokemon. Her eyes were soon drawn to a bunnelby hopping through the grass towards them. It had an expression of superiority on its face as it stopped in front of Syr and cocked its head and gave a small noise. "Awwww aren't you cuuuute?" Syr cooed. The bunnelby looked smugly at Syrian's pokemon at the statement. It hopped closer, but was stopped by a suddenly growling Dog. He didn't like the air of superiority surrounding the bunnelby and the way it was so smug about its own cuteness. He didn't like the little bunny one bit, and wanted him away from Syrian, before he could do anything suspicious! "Dog, down! Leave the poor bunny alone!" Syr demanded behind Dog. Dog let out a whine and cast a glance back at Syr beggingly. His master didn't understand that the bunny was being a complete jerk! The bunnelby sent Dog a glare, sticking his tongue out at the houndour before hopping over to Syr and looking up at her cutely, twitching his nose in the way that he knew humans always thought was cute. "Dawwwwww, aren't you just the cutest little thing?" Syr cooed again, reaching down and petting the bunnelby. Dog snarled low in his throat. He didn't like this one bit. The bunnelby sent him a smug look over his shoulder, where Syr couldn't see it. He stuck out his tongue and rolled his eyes. Dog growled and jumped forward, sending a stream of embers at the bunnelby. "Dee-oh-gee WESTERBURG!" Syr shouted angrily. "You leave that bunny alone, now, or I'm putting you in your pokeball!" Dog backed up, his ears falling down and tail going between his legs as he whined. Why couldn't his master see how smug the stupid little bunny was? "I'm sorry about him, I don't know WHAT has gotten into him today. You're just the cutest thing, I can't see why he doesn't like you, awww so cuuuute.... You want some pokefood?" Syr asked the bunnelby, who nodded vigorously, sending Dog a victorious grin. Dog let out a snarl under his breath, but didn't do anything else. If his master wanted to get taken advantage of and not listen to him, then who was Dog to argue about it? Syr fed the cute bunnelby a handful of pokemon food. The bunnelby then skipped off happily. Dog huffed angrily, but figured that it didn't matter, the stupid bunny was gone now. Syr looked over at Dog and sighed. "I don't know what has gotten into you lately, Dog. You really need to be more accepting of pokemon around me. That bunnelby wasn't doing any harm at all, and you just attacked him for no reason. You need to get your head in the right place, Dog. I can't have you attacking random pokemon just because they come near me," Syr said, patting Dog's head. "Don't you understand that? You could get in real trouble for attacking pokemon outside of a pokemon battle." Dog lifted his head and whined, butting his head against his trainer's hand. He seemed to be apologizing for his actions, and Syr smiled at him. "Aw come on now. It's alright, you just need to learn to not let your jealousy get the best of you, that's all. Now come on, we'd better get going to Dianette. I want a nice bath and a soft place to sleep at night for a few days, huh?" Word Count: 1,048 |
