deceleration! Baako was enjoying himself as he walked the main road of Weswell towards Vlostik Town. The weather was mild with a blanket of clouds overhead that promised snow sometime in the future, but as it was now Baako didn’t need to break out his big coat. As he walked past various houses that served as landmarks for his hometown, his mind drifted to memories from earlier today. He’d already said his goodbyes to his father and few friends who were not going out to be Pokémon Trainers, a hard task that had given him a moment of doubt to whether or not he should even go on this quest. But his resolve hardened when he remembered why he was going on this journey in the first place. His mother would be waiting for him come April, about six months from now, in Scurarte where she would be taking on the Gym Leader. He hadn’t seen her in person since she’d left six years ago, and there was no way he was going to let himself be held back by his anxiety. The plan was for Baako to hike to Cadence, from there he’d take the subway to Dianette where he would then resume hiking all the way to Scurarte. ‘Still, this isn’t going to be easy. Even with the route picked out I’ll have to really scrimp and save my money if I want to afford the subway ticket, but I’ll still need to buy supplies for Tug and I. Not to mention getting ourselves stronger to handle whatever Mother Nature throws at us.’ Baako’s thoughts were interrupted when someone tapped him on the shoulder forcing him to jump nearly out of his skin and turn towards the point of contact in panic. Standing in front before him was a man who looked a few years older than him if his facial hair was anything to go by. Unfortunately that was all Baako saw of his face as his eyes slammed down to the ground as if it were the most interesting thing in the world. He saw the man take a step back, his feet shuffling as if he was deciding whether or not he was going to just leave, but apparently he decided to stay, “Erm, excuse me, would you by chance have a map? Mine was ruined when it got soaked, and I’m not familiar with West Godia at all.” The man’s voice crashed against his ears and it took Baako everything he had not to bolt. He’d done this plenty of time, overcame his anxiety and talked to people, but it never seemed to get any easier. He was playing with his beanie, trying to mumble out that he did have a map, but for the love of him Baako could not command himself to reach into his pack and grab it. Again the man’s feet shuffled closer and Baako fell backwards with a yelp when he again felt contact on his shoulder. Baako tried to gather himself, but now he was shaking in embarrassment of how he must have looked, which didn’t help since it only made him more flustered. “Hey, you alright buddy?!” Still unable to respond, Baako simply sat there as he tried to collect himself. Before the man could come any closer another pair of shoes appeared to intervene, “Ah you’ll have to forgive Baako. He doesn’t do well with strangers. Why don’t you come with me, I have a map of Godai at my house that you can use.” Baako could practically feel the eyes of the stranger on him, judging him before finally leaving with the local. It was another five minutes before Baako was back up and moving, his hands fidgeting with his beanie as he tried to console himself, ‘How am I supposed to cross a country full of strangers if I can’t even handle one asking for directions?’ Not for the first time Baako wondered just what he had gotten himself into. With a heave Baako set his back against the ground and allowed himself a small reprieve from lugging around the extra weight. The teen had been traveling for the past five hours, walking the main road as he took in the sights that nature had to offer. He was still near the mountains, their shadows already begging over the area, but he could no longer see Weswell town in the distance as it had vanished with a bend in the road. Taking a canteen from the pack, Baako took a few long swigs before capping it off and moving to grab some food. The food portion of his pack was overflowing with a selection that wouldn’t go bad anytime soon, from jerky to trail mix there was enough food in his pack to last for quite a while. After grabbing a few slices of jerky, a hunk of cheese and some almonds, Baako began to refasten the pouch but then noticed the Pokémon food in its box, ‘I’ll bet Tug can do for a meal, even if he was just crammed in the Pokeball all day.’ Grabbing the box and a bowl, he filled it up half way with food before taking Tug’s ball from his hip and opening it. A red beam of energy solidified into a small mole-pokemon with huge claws on each hand. Tug looked around, his small frame turning around wildly as he took in his surroundings with wide eyes, “Kekemuuuuh!!!” The little mole gave a loud cry before he started digging into the ground, his claws moving the cold soil easily as he nestled into a hole. Baako couldn’t help but smile at his partner’s quirk. It a lot of ways he and Tug were the same, neither of them did very well when it came to changes in their regular routine. Being out in the open was frightening to the little mole, so whenever he was out of the Pokeball he’d burrow underground and huddle in his tunnel. “Come an eat Tug, I bet you’re pretty hungry.” Following his trainer’s voice, Tug began to tunnel towards him, a mound of earth signifying his trail before it stopped a few feet away as he popped from the ground. “Muuh~” Waddling over towards the bowl, Tug knocked it over with his claws before tearing into the feast with gusto. Baako followed his lead although at a slower pace as he ate his food in silence. He’d never been out of Weswell before, even in secondary school he avoided the fieldtrips that lead them to some of the wonders of Western Godai, but now that he was experiencing it for himself he had to admit that there was a tranquil charm to the area. After eating Baako lounged around to gather his strength for the journey ahead, while Tug busied himself digging around in the ground. Baako had to admit it was nice change of pace. While in Weswell one didn’t come across many Pokemon unless they worked the mine, in which case there were tons of ground and rock-pokemon that would attack on a moment’s notice, but out here Baako could hear the singing of bird-pokemon in the trees as the called out to one another. Actually he could also hear another sound in the air as well, ‘Are those voices?’ Looking further up the road bot Baako and Tug were treated to the sight of a torrent of flames spouting off into the air at an odd angle. There was the faint sounds of people shouting as more fire erupted from around the same location. ‘There must be a Pokémon battle over there. I wonder what kind of Pokémon their using?’ Figuring that he’d rested enough, Baako called out to Tug and sealed him into his ball before picking up his pack and starting down the road again. While he wasn’t going to directly come in contact with the trainers, he figured that maybe he’d get a glimpse of a good battle. |

As Baako continued down the road, the shouting from what he thought was trainers grew until he could hear every command. There was a small gathering of six people, four of them standing off to the side as the other two faced off. Standing behind a red fire tailed pokemon with sharp claws was woman who looked to be in her late twenties with brown skin and vibrant blond hair. On the other side stood a man who must have been in his forties with a quadruped purple Pokemon with a horn on its head. Both Pokemon seemed slightly injured, but the determination in their eyes didn’t waver and the same held true with their trainers. Baako pulled out his Pokedex, having only seen the red pokemon before from a commercial, he wanted to get stats from the pair. Pointing the lens of his Pokedex towards the first, his screen lit up as a prompt with the word searching displayed on the screen. Before long a ping rang out and his Pokedex started speaking through the speaker with a robotic voice: “Charmeleon the flame pokemon.” With an order from the girl Charmeleon let loose a torrent of flames from his maw, which washed over the opposing pokemon with vicious force, but the purple pokemon proved to be just as tough. No sooner than the flames died out did it release a slew of glowing purple pins that dug into Charmeleon before exploding with enough force to send him sliding back. Wincing in empathy for the damaged pokemon, Baako turned back to the Pokedex as it displayed a very detailed amount of information. Whoever programmed the dex left no rock unturned, it had everything from the mating cries in the wild to the general nature of the pokemon. While it was interesting information, Baako focused on the battling information that was provided, ‘It’s strong in both types of attack, but it looks like special attack is where it really shines. Speed isn’t bad, but the defenses aren’t very good, so anyone that can out speed it and get in a good hit will put Charmeleon in a tough situation.’ He also noticed that Charmeleon’s move pool was pretty varied, allowing it to counter some of its weaknesses with offensive capabilities if push comes to shove. Moving the Pokedex over to his adversary, which was a little harder since they were once again trading attacks, Baako was able to get it into focus after the purple pokemon smashed into Charmeleon with its horn. Once again after a spell the information came into view, “Nidorino the poison pin Pokemon.” Taking a look at its battle data, Baako noticed that generally most of its stats, with the exception of physical attack power, was below Charmeleon’s. ‘It doesn’t have much to go on besides strength, but the rest of its abilities aren’t too far behind. Then again, it is a poison type, and mom always said you couldn’t be too careful around those.’ It was a lesson that had been reinforced during secondary school by his teachers. Poison Pokemon were able to shift the tide of battle should they manage to deliver their poison into their opponent’s body, but more so if it wasn’t cured in a timely manner the Pokemon could die. It looked as though that was the case with Charmeleon, as it was now struggling to stand after being stabbed by what Baako could only assume was horn attack, ‘And since the Pokedex says most of Nidorino’s poison in its horn the amount of poison injected is probably a lot higher.’ Sure enough his trainer, returned the flame pokemon into his ball with a look of concern before. Baako didn’t know what rules they had established but it looked like it was the end of the battle. The group began to come together as they congratulated one another on a fine battle, something that was met with smiles. Turning from the sight, Baako continued walking towards the next town before the group spotted him and made things…awkward. ‘To bad I couldn’t see the whole battle, but even that bit at the end was enough to get my heart beating like crazy. I’ll bet that’s how mom felt all the time when she was watching the videos online. I’ll be actually being in the battle with another trainer will be even more exciting, especially with someone as skilled as a gym leader.’ |

An few hours had passed since the battle and Baako's thoughts had long since turned from the intense fighting he'd witnessed. The sun was now hidden behind the mountains, but it looking at his holocaster told him it was only 5 o'clock. Still Baako was pretty tired, he'd been walking all day and while the teen knew that there was no way he was going to make the trip in a single day, it was still pretty disappointing to know that tomorrow would be filled with even more walking. 'I guess I should soon, can get in a good meal and maybe play some music before turning in.' Deciding he'd walk just until he rounded the next bend not to far ahead, Baako trudged on. That was when he noticed the figure in the distance. While it was impossible for Baako to know who it was, the silhouette on the horizon was definitely a person, well if the way it was moving was any indication. His heart jump started in his chest, his nerves instantly on edge just like the last few times he'd passed a stranger. To make matters worse there was no way to avoid the situation. If he deviated too far off the path he'd just go stumbling around in the wilderness, and in no way was he prepared to encounter the number of beasts that lurked in the tall grass. Stopping for the night didn't solve anything either since it meant the person might want to join him, making the whole situation worse. So Baako resigned himself to his fate, hoping that the person would just pass them by with a hello like the rest. The closer he got, the more Baako lowered his head, until the traveler's feet came into his vision, "Hello peasant, no your eyes do not deceive you it is I, the brilliant and gifted Ginx!!" Baako winced from the volume and intensity of his voice, but chose to keep walking in order to get out of range as soon as possible. For a while there was only the sound of his own footsteps, but soon he heard another pair rapidly approaching before the same set of feet blocked his path, "You cur!! You would dare ignore the great GX?! Is your brain so rotted that you can't recognize your superiors when you see them?!" The man, Ginx stepped towards Baako, and caused him to nearly lose it. Ginx was short, plain and simple, and while Baako could usually just look down to avoid meeting someone's eyes, Ginx's staure put him right into his line of sight. Having met his angry expression Baako jumped back in fear, "Gah!!" "Gah!? You dare flinch away from my perfectly fashionable attire?! You who garb yourself in third rate rags and call them clothes, you who sticks a Wurmples dung onto your head and dare call it a hat!? I have never been so insulted in mine entire life and I will not stand for it! You'll regret this day for the rest of your life! I'll inflict such overwhelming wounds onto your pride and clothes, that your own mother will think you nothing but a disgusting Muk slithering about! Now come Fiya!!" Baako's eyes widened as a small monkey-Pokemon came into sight, its pale body covered in red fur and its hair fashion in a most peculiar way. The Pokemon set its eyes onto him, burning into his frame with an intensity that rivaled that of a savage, then started laughing as it fell to the ground and rolled around as it clutched its sides as if in pain. The Pokemon was laughing at him, why he had no idea, but the creature seemed to find him absolutely hysterical. While Baako didn't want to battle, he couldn't leave without walking past both the strange Pokemon and his equally strange trainer. He tried to ask the man to step aside, but it came out in a mumble so low that only his ears picked it up over the sound of the laughing Pokemon. "What's the matter you lousy peasant, afraid to face the magnificent GX in battle?! Well too bad, you're chance to apologize has come and gone, I cannot allow such a sleight to pass!! Now on with it, bring out your Pokemon so that I may thrash it!" Stuck in a bad situation with no option for retreat there seemed only one way to solve this problem, 'I-I've got to battle. This isn't going to go away...and if I can't get myself past this hurdle, then I'll never make it to mom.' With a small glint of resolve in his eye, Baako took Tug's pokeball from his hip and set him free. Encounter Tug formed in moments, his surroundings forgotten as he notice the other Pokemon before him. His presence caused a new bout of laughter from the Red haired Pokemon, something that brought no small amount of anger from Tug, "What a monstrosity! You're Pokemon is atrocious, it has no style what so ever, and is that dirt?! Heavens why must I suffer through this distensible situation?!" Focusing on the Pokemon, Baako was able to muster his voice to give commands, "Tug use scratch!!" Having practiced over the summer, Tug understood the relationship he shared with his trainer to some extent. Combine that with his frustration at the laughing Pokemon and you had one egarer mole tearing into the ground as he shifted the soil to close the distance between the still laughing monkey-pokemon. Before the opponent knew what was happening, Tug was able to deliver a solid blow onto his frame from the massive claws, "Gughiii!" With a cry Fiya was sent stumbling back, a welt already forming where the blow landed. Fiya snarled at the little mole, his trainer silently fuming as the pokemon retaliated without a command, his arms flailing wildly as she scratched Tug on the chest, though it didn't seem to effect the mole as much. "Tug while he's close, Rapid Spin." Baako felt at home, his anxiety quickly fading as he kept his focus on his partner. Tug for his part didn't need to be told twice. He quickly began to spin on one foot, his arms held out horizontally as his claw smacked into the Monkey-pokemon with a loud impact. Fiya took a step back, but didn't only enough to be out of range, and as soon as Tug stopped spinning he was greeted with another assault by the little monkey. Once again Tug wethered the blow, only the faintest of lines appearing on his tough skin. "Scratch him again!" Allowing his claws to fly Tug once again hit a firm scratch attack, knocking Fiya backwards and onto his back. The red primeape struggled to get off his back, but ultimately was unable to as he fainted from the pain. "Fiya you dare stain my image with such a pitiful performance!? I shall make sure you are thoroughly disciplined when we are through. You filthy peasant, do you think you've won? Why Fiya was just a weakling compared to my dear Puff-Puff. I didn't want him to have to sully his hand with such low tier trash as yourselves but you leave me no choice!! Come my sweet Puff-Puff!" Baako swallowed his anxiety at his opponent's rant, there was nothing he could think to say at the insults and he wished that the man would just go away, but there was another Pokemon in his line-up. Fiya disappeared into a beam of red light, and in his place was a rather large Oddish. Baako knew more about Oddish than he'd known most Pokemon. Not only had his class studied Oddish since it was one of the various Pokemon that could evolve but it also evolved into different forms depending on which stone it is presented with, but his mother also had a Bellossom. He knew that it was grass and poison, a dual type that held both an advantage and weakness for Tug, but since Tug had no attacking ground moves they were left with a disadvantage. 'In this case attacking is much better than defending.' "Tug scratch it good!" The mole was unfettered by the new pokemon and once again it tunneled into the ground before coming up and scratching at the plant-pokemon. Puff-Puff cried out in anguish and fell onto its rather large bottom, much to his trainers dismay, "YOU FILTHY MONGREL!! YOU DARE LAY HANDS ON MY PUFF-PUFF?!" Gone was what little calm Ginx had, his head becoming disheveled as his hands pulled at the locks, "PUFF-PUFF SHOW THIS LOW CLASS CUR WHAT EXCELLENCE SMELLS LIKE, USE SWEET SCENT!!" The Oddish was on his feet with little trouble in moments, its frame no worse for wear as it started to shake from left to right, releasing from its pores a rather tantalizing smell. Tug was not immune as he slowly drifted towards Oddish. Not wanting to lose the pace Baako commanded another scratch attack. Picking up speed Tug obeyed his command, once again scratching Puff-Puff and knocking him onto his bottom. "THAT'S IT, NO MORE OF THIS MOCKERY!! PUFF-PUFF USE YOUR NEW FOUND SENSE OF FASHION, SHOW HIM HOW YOU GLEAM!!" Oddish was on his feet again, his breathing a little labored but Baako wasn't sure if it was from the attack or the effort. Either way, the Oddish sucked in some air before he spun around and stuck a pose which emitted a dazzling light that seemed to carry with it some force as it knocked Tug onto his back. While Baako wasn't sure what kind of move used posing, he was sure that Tug would not be able to take much more of them. The mole was panting, tired from his battles and only growing weaker as they pressed on, "Hang in there little buddy, Hit him with another scratch!" Invigorated by his trainer's voice, Tug covered the distance by foot and leapt at the Oddish with another landed scratch, bringing the bigger Pokemon down as it landed on his back. Puff-Puff couldn't move, his feet just could support his weight and soon he too passed out from his injuries. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO~ A brilliant man like myself failed by a common peasant? How could such a tragedy befall us, my dear Puff-Puff?" Baako returned Tug into his ball with a smile on his face, though it was quickly replaced when he realized that his opponent had done the same. The man was sitting on the ground, not caring about the dirt that would no doubt stain the white garment. Nervoulsy, Baako continued to walk pass him, but suddenly he slammed into the ground as the man lashed out and pushed him. Baako scrambled back, mumbling like a mad man, "Getawaygetawaygetawaygetaway." Ginx stood there with fury in his eyes and anger on his face, "Mark my words peasant, this is not over!! I'll find you when my Pokemon are healed and return this disgrace ten fold!! You shall rue the day the glorious from of Ginx Dario crossed your pathetic path!!" His threat delivered, Ginx turned on his heel and headed towards Weswell, leaving a now shaking Baako in his wake. Battle Summary!!

The night had come and gone, the sun now well above the horizon as Baako continued his journey to Vlostic town. Last night had been rough for the trainer, his night spent tossing and turning but not all of it was because of the hard ground. The boy just couldn’t get over what had happened yesterday, the encounter plagued his consciousness like some sort of parasite. ‘Why couldn’t I just force my way past him? He would have eventually left me alone, he was headed back toward Weswell and I doubt chasing me would have been that important.’ It was easier to be mad at himself rather than think about how rude that man, Ginx, had been towards him. What made things worse was the promise of revenge after the battle, something that Baako never had to deal with before. He couldn’t lie, the teen was afraid that the man would make good on his threat and pursue him until Baako was dealt with, ‘What if he never leaves me alone? What if he won’t rest until he pays me back for humiliating him….WHAT IF HE WANTS TO KILL ME?!’ Mind in overdrive Baako reached stopped and dropped his pack, rummaging around until he found a pair of headphones. Plugging them into his portable music player, Baako allowed the sounds of one of his many favorite songs to wash into his ears. Slowly but surely the boy began to calm, leaving all thoughts of Ginx and his horrible experience behind as a symphony of instruments took him on a journey outside the realm of the physical plain. The world didn’t seem so hostile with music, a comfort that Baako would never take for granted since he remembered what his life was like without it. Putting his bag back onto his back, the trainer continued his walk towards Vlostic with a refreshing pace. ‘Tug did very well against those two Pokémon yesterday, even if one of them was just allowed to do whatever he pleased.’ While he was proud of the little Drilbur, in no way was he blinded to the reality that had been extremely lucky to have gotten such a hands off trainer. If both Pokemon had some coaching then Baako had no doubt that Tug could have only beaten one of them, especially when it came down to Oddish. ‘I know Oddish learns absorb at a very early age, but he didn’t use it at all against us. Instead he just threw out that dazzling gleam, not a bad move, but it didn’t do nearly as much damage as absorb. I’ll have to expand my team in the future, can’t have Tug taking on multiple opponents like that, especially if he’s in a type disadvantage.’ Ahead of him was a hill, one that was fairly steep but in no way challenging enough to be dangerous unless he was on a bike or something. Following the paved road, the trainer soon arrived at the top of the hill and the sight on the horizon made him grin. In the distance was his destination, Vlostic town, and while he wouldn’t arrive for another few hours at best, it was good to see that he was close to passing his first hurdle on this long journey to the east. |
