Thud! Ugh, that was the third time Henry had fallen today. The winter conditions had affected nearly every surface around Godai, and Reedriver Bridge was no exception. In fact, the Bridge had become an ice rink. The challenge was to not slip and fall into the river, most likely then drowning. How fun! Henry slowly lifted himself from the pavement, his hands nearly giving way from under him. He stood back up, rubbing his back. Oh, great now he had to walk the bridge with a back pain. Henry was tired of traveling. He missed Kotoba City. He missed being able to relax in a bed or go to a café and get a hot chocolate. Instead he had to drag himself across the bridge without falling. Usually there was a bike rental near Reedriver, but the service was closed for the day due to construction. So, Henry had no choice in the matter. As well as that, but he actually wanted to make it past the bridge. He could’ve gone down south, but he needed to go to Central Godai.

One of Henry’s fondest memories as a child was going to Metropolitan Avenue. Henry came from a small town, so going to the big city was always exciting for Henry. His mother didn’t have a lot of money, so they weren’t able to go on vacation to another Region. For them, a big holiday was going to North Central Godai. They would stay in the city for a few days, usually in a hotel. Henry loved to walk down the long streets, looking in all the windows of every shop. The PokéMart in Metropolitan Avenue was huge, way bigger than the one back home. Henry would save up any money he would make so that he could spend it all in Metropolitan Avenue. It had been two years since Henry had last been to the Avenue, and he was really looking forward to going back. He had once again saved up some money, so he could relive his childhood. Of course, the city also had some great products for trainers, so Henry was eager to see what they had in store.

Henry continued his slow walk across the bridge, surveying the path in front of him for any patches of ice which could potentially bring to the ground once again. There weren’t many people on the bridge, only one or two couples looking at the scenery around the bridge. Henry had to be honest, the scenery was beautiful. The river had frozen over on some parts, but was majorly still intact due to the sheer force of running water. The water was so clear and healthy looking. Reeds grew along the sides of the river, giving the bridge its name. As Henry looked into the river, he could see the silhouettes of the Pokémon as they swam. He could also see a few Pokémon by the bank of the river. He saw a group of Wooper surrounding a Quagsire, who was picking plants for the Wooper to eat. Henry smiled. Seeing Pokémon going about their lives always made him feel better, and he really did need to feel better.

Then, Henry felt his legs begin to shake. Oh, no. Henry frantically tried to grasp the sides of the bridge to steady himself, but they were too slippery to hold. Henry helplessly flapped his arms about before finally falling backwards onto the ground, his head smacking against the pavement. He groaned, and could hear someone on the bridge giggle. Oh, great, now people were laughing at him. He didn’t blame them, really. He had fallen four times now. Four times! That was just ridiculous. Any happiness the site of the Pokémon had brought Henry was now gone as he picked himself up again. He decided to lean against the side of the bridge, no longer wanting to traverse this death trap. He just needed to take a second to compose himself. His head was pounding from hitting the ground and his back still hurt. And, of course, he was really cold. He somehow forgot to pack an overcoat when he left home. Sure, he had his jacket but that didn’t do much to keep the cold out. Henry was sure he was going to catch a cold at this rate, which was all he needed now-

Suddenly, Henry froze. At far end of the river, Henry spotted a Pokémon. Not just any a Pokémon, but a Pokémon that was a rare sight to see by the river underneath Reedriver Bridge. Henry had to go back. He had to get a closer look at this Pokémon. Of course, that would mean any progress he had made across the Bridge would be irrelevant. Oh, what was he on about? He hadn’t even made it halfway across! He had to go back, that was his decision. Henry began to slowly make his way back to the start of the Bridge. He needed to meet this Pokémon face-to-face. It was not every day you get to meet a Farfetch’d!

Farfetch'd info and Encounter Roll link

Henry slowly made his way back to the start of the Bridge. He looked down the river, to where the Farfetch’d was. It was rooting through a cluster of reeds with that stick it had. What were they again, some sort of plant? Oh! Henry could look it up in his Pokédex. He rooted through his backpack, pulling out the Pokédex and turning it on. Alright, now he had to get close enough for it to recognize the Farfetch’d. Henry began slowly move towards the Farfetch’d, licking his lips as he concentrated on keeping quiet. The Farfetch’d was fixated on the reeds for some reason, so it hadn’t noticed Henry’s quiet approach.

Henry raised the Pokédex so that it was pointing directly at the Farfetch’d. It began to process the creature in front of it, before the voice began to start speaking."Farfetch'd, a Wild Duck Pokémon. Farfetch'd makes a delicious meal, especially when cooked with leek. Because of this, Farfetch'd is nearly extinct.”. Henry’s excitement for finding the new Pokémon fell away, now replaced by the feeling of guilt. Ah, yes, he had forgot about the whole Farfetch’d crisis. Henry had never had Farfetch’d before, but he knew it was quite popular in certain parts of Godai. Now Henry wasn’t sure what to do now. On one hand, a rare Pokémon was right here for the taking, he HAD to battle it! On the other hand, Farfetch’d are becoming scarce, and capturing one won’t help spread the population at all.

Henry sighed, ultimately deciding to leave the Pokémon be. He didn’t want to catch a Pokémon that was becoming extinct, it just didn’t feel right. Henry stood up straight, stretching as he did so. He closed his Pokédex, the device making a sound as it did so. Henry returned the device to the pocket in his bag where he had retrieved it from. Suddenly, Henry felt a pair of eyes staring at him. He looked back at the Farfetch’d, who had now noticed Henry.

The Farfetch’d was staring at Henry blankly. It didn’t seem to be startled or afraid, but instead it seemed unfazed by Henry’s presence. Henry was standing still, staring back at the Farfetch’d. What was it doing? Was it going to flee? Was it going to attack? Henry had no idea, so he continued the staring contest with the Farfetch’d. Then, the Farfetch’d made a noise of content, before going back to searching through the cluster of reeds. Henry relaxed, still very confused by the actions of the Farfetch’d. Why did it not care at all about Henry? Usually Pokémon show some sort of interest or opinion towards humans when encountering one, and yet this Farfetch’d didn’t seem to care at all. Henry awkwardly scratched his head, not really sure what to do now.

Well, the chances of Henry encountering another Farfetch’d were unlikely, so he might as well try and milk it for all it was worth. Henry once again lowered himself down onto his haunches, now level with the Farfetch’d. What was his plan anyways? Dod Henry actually know what he was going to do? Short answer, no. Long answer, not at all. I guess I’ll just…start talking. Henry cleared his throat, getting the Farfetch’d’s attention once again. ”Hi there, sorry to bother you but…” Henry started, suddenly realising he really had nothing to say. ”…Um, my name is Henry. I’m a Pokémon trainer and...” Once again, Henry trailed off. The Farfetch’d was just staring at him. The look of boredom etched across the Farfetch’d’s face clearly showing how uninterested it was. This is ridiculous Henry thought. I should just get up now and leave-

Trainer Battle Roll

”Haha! I knew I’d find you!”. Henry heard a very masculine voice from behind him. He looked back to see a very tall, very muscular man with a wide grin across his face. ”Um, excuse me?” Henry said, very confused by the sudden appearance of this man. The man ignored Henry, walking directly towards the Farfetch’d. ”I’ve been looking for you. You’re not an easy one to find now, are ya?”. The Farfetch’d was just as confused as Henry, looking up at the man without saying a word. The man then went to his belt, grabbing a Pokéball. ”It’s hunting season, lil fella!” The man said, throwing his Pokéball as he did so.
Henry stood up quickly. He couldn’t let the man catch the Farfetch’d! ”No! Wait!”.

The Pokéball landed, opening to spill out light. The light formed into a Pokémon, and when the light faded away the Pokémon was revealed. It was a Beldum, a Pokémon that Henry had never seen before. He knew of it, but that was all. Out of instinct, Henry reached for his Pokédex, pointing it towards the Beldum. The device made a noise, and the device began to speak. ”Beldum, the Iron Ball Pokémon. Instead of blood, a powerful magnetic force courses throughout Beldum's body. This Pokémon communicates with others by sending controlled pulses of magnetism”. Henry quickly pocketed the Pokédex. He had to act quick. He couldn’t let this Farfetch’d be caught, it had to stay in the wild. Henry knew he couldn’t stop Farfetch’d becoming extinct, but he at least he could save one Farfetch’d.

Henry ran in front of the Beldum, standing between it and the Farfetch’d. The Beldum didn’t seem annoyed by this, but instead was staring intently at the Farfecth’d. It seemed to be...analysing it? The Beldum was vey interested in the Farfetch’d, that Henry knew for sure. ”Hey, what’s the problem, kid?” The man said, glaring at Henry. ”I’m sorry, sir” Henry said, spreading his arms out as if trying to shield the Farfetch’d. ”But I can’t let you capture this Pokémon. Farfetch’d are becoming extinct and I can’t stand by and watch you take this one”’. The man sighed, rubbing his face as he did so. ”Ah, shit, another protester” The man said, before walking towards Henry. He put a hand on Henry’s shoulder, which took Henry by surprise. ”Look, I’m not going to “hurt” the Pokémon, I just want him for my collection”. Then, the man pushed Henry away and walked towards his Beldum. ”Alright, let’s get us a Farfetch’d, Ed” He said, grinning as he did so.

Henry once again ran in front of the Beldum, stopping it from seeing the Farfetch’d. ”No, I won’t let you take this Farfetch’d”. Interestingly, the Farfetch’d hadn’t ran away. It didn’t even seem to be afraid. It just stood behind Henry, curious about the situation unfolding. The man was starting to get impatient. ”Kid, get out of my way or my Beldum will make you move” He said, gritting his teeth in frustration. Henry wasn’t going to move, so he needed a compromise. ”Alright, how about a battle?”. The man raised an eyebrow at Henry’s suggestion. ”A battle?” He said, surprised by the suggestion. ”Yes, a battle. If I win, you leave this Farfetch’d alone”. The man chuckled at that, shaking his head. ”Fine, fine. And what if I win?”. Henry hadn’t thought about that. Well, if he was going to get the man to battle him he had to offer him what he wanted. ”If you win, I won’t stop you. You can capture this Farfetch’d and I won’t do anything to stop you”.

Pokémon Declaration

The man was still grinning. ”Alright, kid, I’ll battle you” He said, crossing his arms as he did so. Henry nodded, and immediately went to his belt. Who should he use? Beldum was a duel type Pokémon, according to his Pokédex. Steel and Psychic. Charlie’s a fire type, which are super effective against Steel types, if Henry was correct. Well, then it was a no brainer. Henry detached the Pokéball from his belt, and threw it. ”Charlie, come on out!”. The ball landed, and light spilled from it. The light formed into Henry’s Charmander, Charlie. The Charmadner let out a roar, getting into a battle stance. ”A Charmander? Seriously? You think that’ll beat me?” The man said, beginning to laugh again. Henry glared at him. Then, he realised he had never got the man’s name. ”Who are you, anyways?” Henry said, the anger evident in his voice. The man unfolded his arms, the grin never leaving his face. ”The name’s Reece. Reece Horgan. I only catch Rare Pokémon. One day, I’m going to have the Rarest, most Powerful team in all of Godai!”. Reece changed his stance to a more offensive one. ”Alright, kid, make your move”.

”Okay! Charlie, use scratch!”. Charlie lunged towards the Beldum, raising his claws as he did so. ”Dodge it, Ed!”. The Beldum swiftly veered right, and Charlie went flying past. Charlie landed, and steadied himself. Ed the Beldum turned to look at Charlie, once again looking at him with an expression of curiosity. The Beldum didn’t seem to have registered that this was a battle, and was still very relaxed in its manner. ”Charlie, try Scratch again!”. Once again, Charlie leapt upwards towards the levitating Pokémon, but Ed easily dodged the assault. Alright, Scratch wasn’t working. This Beldum was faster than Henry had expected.

Charlie could use Ember, sure, but Henry wanted to weaken the Beldum before going all out with the fire move. Okay, so how could he weaken Ed? While Henry was pondering his next move, Reece began his assault. ”Ed! Use Iron Head!”. The Beldum bucked upwards into the air, and reared downwards towards Charlie. Ed hurtled down towards Charlie, and the Charmander was watching in shock and awe. He needed to move or Henry’s chances of coming out of this battle victorious would be severely depleted. ”Get out of there, Charlie!” Henry roared, and Charlie snapped out of his state of shock. He lept sideways, narrowly missing Ed’s Iron Head. Ed flew past Charlie, crashing head first into the ground. Ed, out of shock from the impact, flew backwards into the air, eyes rolling into the back of his head.

Now, that was an idea. Ed was fast, and if Charlie ever made contact with him it’d probably do the Beldum very little damage. So, why not let Ed do the damage himself? Charlie was pretty quick, so Henry was quite sure he’d be able to dodge a few attacks from the Beldum. Henry, out of habit, began to make his move, but had to bite his tongue to stop himself from shouting out a command to Charlie. Instead, he stood silent and let Reece make a move. Of course, Reece realised he could make a second attack and took the opportunity. ”Ed, let’s go again! Take Down!” Reece roared, and once again Ed reared it’s head and dived down towards Charlie. Henry, albeit very nervously, counted down in his head.

3…

Ed the Beldum was hurtling towards Charlie. It seemed to be shaking, most likely due to the suspected concussion it suffered from going head first into the ground.

2…

Charlie was standing still, watching as the Beldum hurtled towards him. Of course, he was afraid of being hit, but he trusted Henry. He knew he had a plan, which Charlie had somewhat managed to figure out himself. Let this Beldum recklessly damage itself, while Charlie just had to tuck and roll away from time to time. Simple.

1…

Showtime. ”Charlie, move!” Henry roared, and Charlie obliged. He rolled off to the Beldum’s left, and once again Ed connected with the ground. Reece stomped his foot in frustration as he watched his Beldum somewhat stagger away from where it had landed, its eyes firmly shut from the pain. ”Damn it, Ed! Stop messing around!” Reece roared, his face reddening.

Henry had a broad grin on his face. His plan was actually working! Now, he had to go on the offense. Now it was time to use Charlie’s fire. ”Okay, Charlie, use Ember!”. Charlie jumped forward, now only a few feet from the levitating Beldum. He took in deep breath, and his throat seemed to light up. Then, balls of fire started burst from Charlie’s mouth, covering the Beldum. Ed was too confused and in pain to retaliate, so it let Charlie attack. When Charlie finished, he backed away in case the Beldum fought back. However, Ed was in too much pain to fight back. It was severely weakened. ”Come on, Ed! Snap out of it!” Reece roared. Ed was still in pain, but seemed to be coming back to his senses. ”Get yourself together, Ed!” Reece screamed. Ed’s eye suddenly opened, a look of determination and anger within it.

”Perfect! Let’s use Zen Headbutt”
Reece said, now delighted with his Pokémon. Ed took a few more seconds to recover, before then diving in once again. Henry grinned. Wow, Reece was really trying the same thing. He once again waited for Ed to get close enough before shouting out his command. ”Okay, Charlie, dodge aga-“ Henry began, but was cut off by the sound of Ed connecting with Charlie, and sending Charlie flying backwards. Charlie hit the ground and tumbled for a bit before coming to a halt. ”Charlie, no!” Henry yelled. He began to run towards his Pokemon, but came to a halt. No, he had to be strong here. ”Come on, Charlie! Get up!”. Charlie slowly began to rise. His legs were shaking, but he began to stand up straight. However, Reece wasn’t going to wait and roared ”Ed, go again with Zen Headbutt!”. Ed hurtled towards Charlie once again, connecting with him and sending him flying back. Henry watched in disbelief as his Pokémon was thrown to the ground again, and he wasn’t sure if Charlie was going to get up.

Henry pulled his eyes away from Charlie when he heard Reece laughing. ”I knew this battle would be easy, but I never thought it would be this easy!” Reece said, the grin on his face showing his pure delight at Charlie’s pain. Henry gritted his teeth at Reece’s remark. Easy? Charlie was destroying Ed! How could he say this battle was easy?!?! Well, it’s not over yet Henry thought, and he took a step closer to his Pokémon. ”Come on, Charlie, get up!” Henry yelled, but Charlie stayed down. ”We can win this, Charlie!” Henry yelled, trying to encourage his Pokémon. While this was happening, Reece stood nearby chuckling to himself. ”…I need you, Charlie” Henry said, his voice sounding defeated. Finally, Charlie started to rise. A smile broke out on Henry’s face, and Reece raised an eyebrow in surprise. The Charmander slowly stood to his feet, still somewhat shaky. ”I knew you could do it, Charlie!” Henry yelled, punching the air with delight.

Reece laughed again, shaking his head. ”Yeah, your Pokémon’s got determination. So what? This battle is over!”. Reece pointed at Charlie. ”Ed, use Iron Head and finish this Charmander off!”. Ed the Beldum once again rose up into the air, before diving down towards Charlie. Henry had to think. Dodging had worked before, but at the same time it was the tactic that got Charlie injured. However, Henry had no choice. He had to risk it. Henry closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and began to count down.

3…

Ed the Beldum hurtled towards Charlie. If his Iron Head connected with Charlie the battle was over.

2…

Reece was watching with excitement, but also curiosity. Why was Henry letting this happen again? He knew the risks, why would he take the chance if it meant risking his Pokémon’s health?

1…

Henry’s eyes opened, and he saw Ed was only a few feet from Charlie. He had timed it perfectly. ”Move, Charlie!”. Charlie fell to one knee, and rolled underneath the Beldum. It hurtled towards the ground, smacking into it once again. ”Now, use Growl!” Henry ordered, and Charlie moved towards the Beldum. He let out a low, menacing growl, which sent shivers through the Beldum. Reece was in shock. ”Get away from him, Ed!” He said, but the Beldum was too afraid to move. The plan was working perfectly. ”Now, use Scratch, Charlie!”. Charlie jumped on top of the Beldum, and began to furiously slash the steel type Pokémon. Now, it was time to finish this.

”Charlie, end this with Ember!”. Charlie took a deep breath, his mouth glowing once more. Then, balls of fire burst from his mouth, covering the Beldum in a ball of fire. The Beldum was too injured and afraid to do anything, and the fire caused considerable damage due to its weakness to fire. The fire finally died away, and the Beldum slowly fell to the ground, its eye closed shut. The battle was over. Henry had won.

Silence fell on the opening beside the river. Henry stood still, anticipating an unexpected resurgence from the Beldum. However, it stayed down, clearly concussed. Reece was silent, but the irritation and disappointment was clear in his face. He pointed the Pokéball at Ed, and the light covered and the Beldum and pulled it back into the Pokéball. It finally came to Henry what had actually happened. He had won. Well, really, it was Charlie who was the champion, who now stood with his arms cross and a small smile on his face. Henry sighed, relieved that the stressful battle was over. He balled his hand into a fist and punched the air, smiling as he did so.

Henry looked back at Reece as he heard the trainer chuckle. ”What are you laughing at?” Henry asked cautiously. As a reply, Reece detached another Pokéball from his jacket and chucked it forward. The ball open, and the light spilled at to form another Pokémon. Oh, Henry hadn’t won. Well, that slightly dampened the mood. The Pokémon was another one that Henry was not familiar with, so he once again pulled out his Pokédex and researched the Pokémon. ” Absol, the Disaster Pokémon. Absol live in steep mountainous regions, and rarely venture down into areas inhabited by humans, but should an Absol be seen by humans, it is said that catastrophe is soon to follow.”. Henry slowly put the Pokédex back into his jacket pocket. Ah, so that was unsettling.

Well, Henry didn’t have much choice in the matter. He had to continue the battle, and had to disregard the fact that this Absol was dubbed the “Disaster Pokémon”. Henry sighed and made his first move, calling back Charlie. He was very tired and injured after his battle, and needed a well-deserved rest. Now, Henry had a choice to make; did he go with Remi or Ewan? Well, Ewan was too much of a risk. They had a battle or two between the forest and Reedriver, and Ewan was progressing well, but in an important battle like this he was still too much of a risk. So, Henry had to go with Remi, who he had been steadily building a bond with.

Pokémon Declaration

Henry detached the Pokéball from his belt and threw it forward. ”Remi, let’s do this!”. The Pikachu burst from the Pokéball, racing towards the Absol and stopping short of running right into it. The Absol looked Remi up and down, and then made a disapproving noise and turned away from Remi. They strolled back towards Reece, and then curled up by his feet. Henry could see the anger on embarrassment on Reece’s face, and then he stomped his foot. ”Damn it, Abby, get yourself together!” Reece snapped, and the Absol looked up at him and groaned. ”Get. Up. Now!” Reece yelled, and the Absol reluctantly stood to her feet. Reece looked up at Henry and nodded at him. ”You start off”.

Henry nodded back, and turned his attention to Remi. ”Alright, Remi, let’s go with Quick Attack!”. Remi immediately went into battle mode, darting towards the at lightning quick pace. He rammed into the Absol, knocking her back. The Absol, Abby, hit the ground, but was back to her feet in a split second. Abby let out a sort of hiss, and glared at Remi. ”Abby!” Reece snapped, ”Let’s give him a taste of his own medicine! Quick attack!”. Abby became a blur so quick that Henry hadn’t even noticed that she had moved. However, Henry thought he had seen a slight grin on the Absol’s face before she attacked. The Absol zig zagged her way towards Remi, before appearing on his right and knocking him sideways. Remi tumbled, but was quickly back to his feet. It was as if the two Pokémon were just testing the waters, testing the strength each other possessed.

Henry was next to make a move. ”Remi, let’s go for Tail Whip!”. Remi skipped towards the Absol on all fours, before standing on his hind legs. He raised his tale into the air, and attempted to latch on to the Absol. However, Absol seemed to have seen it coming, and lept backwards out of the reach of Remi’s tale. Hm, this Absol is smart Henry thought to himself. She hadn’t waited for Reece to tell her to move, like Charlie would. Was that a good thing? Henry wasn’t sure, but the bottom line was Abby had evaded their attack and they had to go again. ”Alright, Remi, let’s hit her with a Thundershock!” Henry exclaimed.

Remi began to spark. Slowly, an aura of electricity surrounded the Pikachu. ”Chuuuuuuu!” Remi yelled, and a bust of thunder exploded from his body. The burst caught Abby the Absol off guard, and she didn’t have time to dodge. The shock hit her, and dropped to the ground from the pain. Henry grinned. Now they were getting somewhere. ”Okay, Remi, let’s go for another Qui-“ Henry began, but he was cut off by Reece’s urgent yet strong command. ”Scratch, Abby!”. The Absol lept into the air, raising a paw as she did so. She land just short of Remi, and began to furiously swipe at the Pikachu. Remi cried out as he was bombarded with Scratches from the Absol. A common move like Scratch would do some damage to the opponent, but not a lot. However, due to Abby’s anger after being hurt by Remi, her Scratch attack came with more menace and viciousness than usual.

Reece chuckled as he watched his Absol batter Henry’s Pikachu. ”Damn, I knew Abby had anger issues, but she is really tearing into your Pikachu”. Henry gritted his teeth, and clenched his fists. He did not come this far to be beaten, and he was not going to be defeated by this lousy excuse for a Pokémon trainer. ”You’re all talk, Reece, but you’re not as great as you make yourself out to be!” He barked, his anger getting to him. Reece let out a scoff, and shook his head. ”Wow, I never knew it would be this easy to get you this riled up”. Henry’s face was beginning to redden from the anger and embarrassment. Then, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes. No, he was not going to be made a fool of by Reece. He had to calm. The fight had only began and Reece knew Remi was still in this, he was just saying these things to get to Henry. Henry hated to admit it, but it was working.

Until now.

Henry opened his eyes, and pointed at Remi. ”Remi, use Quick Attack!”. Remi immediately shot forward, speeding towards the Absol. Reece rolled his eyes, clearly unimpressed by the attack. He opened his mouth to tell Abby what to do, but was cut off by Henry abruptly shouting out another command. ”Stop!”. Remi immediately came to a halt, but seemed confused as to why he was doing so. Why did the Human tell him to stop? He was just about to crush this stupid Absol! ”Remi, Growl!” Henry ordered, and although Remi was confused as to why he was being asked to do this, he obliged anyways. Remi let out a low, menacing growl which sent shivers through the Absol. She was spooked, to say the least. Reece watched in confusion, much like his Absol. Why did Henry make his Pikachu stop to let out a growl? It made no sense. ”Now, Quick Attack again, Remi!” Henry yelled, and Remi happily continued his previous attack. He sprung back into action, and although he was only a mere few feet from the Absol, he still managed to generate enough speed to cause Abby the Absol to go flying backwards on collision.

”What? How did that work!” Reece exclaimed. Henry grinned. It was his turn to chuckle. ”First, abruptly stopping the Quick Attack not only took you by surprise, but your Absol too. Then, the Growl made sure she wasn’t going anywhere and also weakened her. So, the Quick Attack had a bit more of an effect than it usually would”. Reece furrowed his brow, and stomped his foot. ”Grrrr, this isn’t over!” He roared, and turned his attention to his Absol. ”Abby! Up! Now!”. Abby slowly pulled herself to her feet, and turned back towards Remi. ”Fight back with a Quick Attack!”. Abby charged towards Remi, albeit slowly. ”Dodge it, Remi!” Henry said, and Remi easily jumped over the Absol. Reece was growing more frustrated. ”Again, Abby!” He yelled, and Abby once again went in for another Quick Attack. ”Move, Remi!” Henry commanded, and Remi once again jumped above the Absol. However, Reece wasn’t taking no for an answer. ”Scratch, Abby!”. Abby swiftly turned around, and began to scratch Remi once again. Henry hadn’t enough time to tell Remi to dodge, and watched as the Absol attacked his Pikachu. ”Get out of there, Remi!” Henry yelled, and Remi jumped backwards out of the reach of the Absol.

”Quick Attack again, Abby! Don’t give him any time to breath!” Reece screamed, the adrenaline of the battle getting to him. The Absol once again charged at Remi, and Henry once again told Remi to dodge. Henry knew this couldn’t go on any longer. If Remi had to keep dodging the onslaught of attacks, he was going to tire himself out. However, Henry had no time to give a proper order, so he couldn’t counter attack because Reece kept coming back with another attack. What was Henry going to do?

Then, it came to him. He need time to attack, and he knew how to get it. Every time he told Remi to dodge an attack, he would jump into the air to get away. That’s it! Reece, as expected came back with another attack. ”Finish this! One last Quick Attack!”. Abby once again sped towards Remi, and Henry as per usual told him to dodge. However, as Remi leapt into the air to dodge the Absol, Henry gave another order. ”Now, use tail whip!”. Remi turned around, his tail now facing the Absol. As he dropped, he shot his tail out towards Abby, wrapping her up in it. The Absol was in shock, and didn’t try to brake free. Remi landed on the ground, and began to spun around. As he span, Abby spun with him, and by the time he had stopped, Abby was a dizzy mess. Now was their chance to end it. ”Okay, now use Thundershock!” Henry roared. Remi began to glow as the aura of electricity once again surrounded it him. Sparks and tiny bursts of electricity shot from him, before he let out another cry and the auro exploded into bursts of thunder, all targeting the dizzy Absol.

Due to Abby’s state, she didn’t even see the Thundershock coming. She was defenceless as the bursts of thunder hit her, shooting through her body and causing her considerable pain. She shivered severely for a few seconds, before going very still. Henry, Reece and Remi all watched as the Absol stood very still, before finally collapsing due to the exhaustion and pain of the battle. Reece put his hands on his head, and let out a very loud ”Noooo!”. He ran to his Absol, while Henry just stood and watched. He did it. He had won again. This time, he hadn’t just won the battle, but he had also won the bet. Henry sighed, and closed his eyes. By Arceus, he had done it.

Besides the sounds of Nature, silence had fallen on the river bank. Henry could hear the rustling of trees from the wind, the rushing water from the river, and off in the distance he could hear people chatting and laughing. The bridge was about 70 or so yards from where Henry stood, looking upon his opponent. Reece’s face was hard to read. He must be angry, or embarrassed, or shocked, or maybe even a mixture of all three. The Trainer sighed, and slowly stood to his feet, before pulling Abby’s Pokéball from his pocket and returning Abby to it. He then turned to Henry, his features softer than before. ”Well, that’s it then” Reece said, and began to walk away.

Henry was surprised by Reece’s actions. He was just going to walk away? Henry couldn’t just let him walk off into the sunset, especially after such an intense battle. ”Wait a minute!” Henry said, jogging after Reece. Reece kept walking, not looking back at Henry. Henry caught up with him, and began to walk beside him. He had to move at a quicker pace as Reece was taller and had longer legs. ”You’re just going to walk away after such a good battle?” Henry said in disbelief. ”Of course. Why would I hang around?” Reece said, not looking at Henry. That had somewhat caught Henry off guard. Why should he stay around? ”Well…” Henry began, trying to think of what to say. ”…It’s rude to just walk away after a battle. We should at least shake hands!”. Reece sighed, and came to a halt. He turned to Henry, and stuck his hand out. Henry looked at it for a second. Well, he was getting what he had asked for. Henry reached forward to shake his hand, and said ”You’re Pokémon are very impressive”. Reece looked Henry up and down once more. ”Likewise” He said, and began to walk away again.

This time Henry didn’t follow him. He let Reece walk off down the riverside, off towards the forest. Henry was now alone, and everything felt oddly silent. Well, I guess it’s time to go back to Remi Henry thought, and he turned around and walked back up towards the river where he had left his Pikachu. As he walked, he suddenly remembered something. Henry halted, and looked to his right. There, sitting on a rock on the river bank, was the Farfetch’d. Ah, yes, Henry had forgotten about the Farfetch’d. Which, quite frankly, was idiotic. The Farfetch’d was the reason he had battled Reece! Henry walked over to the Farfetch’d, and crouched down in front of it. Had it watched the whole battle? Henry would have assumed it would have seen its chance to escape and took it. Yet, here the Farfetch’d sat, its relaxed expression ever present. ”Um…” Henry began, once again unsure of what to say. ”Well, you’re safe now, he won’t bother you again” Henry said, giving the Farfetch’d a reassuring smile. Yet, the Farfetch’d didn’t seem to care. It was as if it were saying Yeah, so?. The two sat in awkward silence, until Remi slowly made his way over to the pair. ”Pika” Remi said to the Farfetch’d, nodding his head. The Farfetch’d looked at Remi, before suddenly standing up on the rock. ”Fetch, farfecth’d” The Farfetch’d said to both Henry and Remi, before turning around and walking away.

Henry sat in confusion as he watched the Farfetch’d walk away. Well…that wasn’t the thank you Henry had expected. He looked at Remi, hoping that his Pikachu would help him understand what the Farfetch’d had said. However, Remi looked just as confused as Henry did. ”I guess we won’t be getting a “Thank You” letter anytime soon, Remi” Henry said as he stood up straight. While looking at Remi, Henry began to see the damage Remi had taken from the battle. He looked tired, and there was bump, cuts and bruises in certain areas of his little body. ”Oh, shit, Remi” Henry said, and crouched down once more. ”Are you okay, buddy?” Henry said, petting his Pikachu as he did so. ”Pika!” Remi said, shrugging off Henry’s hand. He clearly thought he was perfectly fine. Henry sighed, and began to root through his bag. ”I don’t care what you say, Remi, you’re clearly not fine” Henry said, pulling a small bottle out of his bag. It was a potion, used to heal small wounds inflicted on a Pokémon. Thankfully, that’s all Remi had, although there were quite a few.

Henry scooted over to Remi, once again putting his on the Pikachu. ”I’m going to use this Potion to help heal those wounds. Stand still” Henry said, as he began to spray the potion on Remi’s wounds. Remi rolled his eyes, clearly in disagreement over his wellbeing, but stood still anyways. Henry finished the bottle, and put it back into his bag and once again stood up straight. ”Alright, Remi, time to go back into your ball” Henry said, and pointed the Pokéball at the Pikachu. Remi disappeared into the ball, and Henry attached it to the belt. He sighed, and looked back up the river at the bridge. Whelp Henry thought. Time to cross the bridge.

The temperature was picking up now due to the wind calming down, so Henry was no longer shivering. The bridge was the same as it was when Henry had first attempted to cross it; covered in ice and a literal deathtrap. Henry sighed as he looked upon the bridge. He didn’t want to cross it. He really, really didn’t want to cross it. The bridge wasn’t even that long! It would take Henry a few minutes to cross it and yet with the ice Henry knew it would take double, maybe triple the amount of time it would usually take. Yet, he had to cross if he wanted to get to Metropolitan Avenue, so he had to suck it up and just get on with it.

Henry stared at the bridge for a few seconds longer, before taking a deep breath and stepping towards the bridge. He placed a foot on the bridge, and felt solid ground. Okay, no worries so far. Henry began to cautiously walk across the bridge, never taking his eyes away from the bridge underneath him. Whenever he saw any piece of the path in front of him that looked anyway icy, he would sidestep it and continue his journey. Now, to anyone who was on the bridge who wasn’t Henry, they thought Henry looked ridiculous. He was moving very slow, and was extremely fixated on the ground. Henry didn’t really care, as he’d rather look stupid being cautious instead of looking stupid falling over.

Suddenly, Henry came to a stop near the end of the bridge. He stared at the path in front of him, leading into Central Godai. Henry wasn’t sure why he had stopped. Was he nervous? Well, when Henry thought about it, he had never been to Metropolitan Avenue without his mom. This was the first time. It was finally starting to hit Henry that he was an adult now, and he was on this journey alone. Yes, it was kind of odd that he was realising this two months into his journey, but Henry had never thought about it.

Henry blinked a few times, took a deep breath, and continued walking across the bridge. Finally, Henry made it to the other side of the bridge. When he stepped off the bridge, Henry immediately put his hands on his knees. Okay, you’ve past the bridge and you’re going to go into Central Godai Henry thought to himself. Don’t freak out, it’s not a big deal! You’re going to Metropolitan Avenue, so? Sure, that’s where you went with your mom…and it was were you were at your happiest...and it reminds you of your mom which makes you miss her more…and it also makes you realise you’re an adult which is making you freak out... Henry shook his head. He had to stop thinking, it was just freaking him out more. He had to take his mind off Metropolitan Avenue. He needed a distraction-

And within a second of thinking about finding a distraction, he found one. About 20 metres to the right of Henry, the water was shimmering with a bright light. It definitely wasn’t from the sun, so what was it? Henry found himself slowly edging towards the light in the water, his curiosity overtaking his body. In a few seconds, he was standing over the river, staring down at the shimmering light. It couldn’t be a Pokémon, could it? Henry slowly dropped to his knees to get a closer look at the shape in the water. He began to lower his face towards the water, his nose getting closer and closer to the water. Then, Henry abruptly stuck his hand into the water, and latched onto the shimmering object. He pulled his hand out, and within his grip was a stone. ”Aw, sweet!” Henry whispered to himself, putting the stone into his jacket pocket. He then chuckled, shaking his head. Of course it wasn’t a Pokémon! How ridiculous would that be-

Then, Henry thought he saw something move in the water. Suddenly, the shimmering bright shape leapt from the water and smacked Henry right in the face. Not only smacking him, but also spraying him with water. Henry’s body jerked from the cold water and he fell back. Henry let out a yell of shock and pain, and looked back at the water to see what had hit him. To Henry’s surprise, it was indeed a Pokémon. The Pokémon was small and long, and it was flying around in the water letting out panicked whines. Henry didn’t know the Pokémon from first look, and as per usual Henry immediately pulled out his Pokédex and pointed it at the Pokémon.

Barboach Info

”Barboach, the Whiskers Pokémon. Barboach's sensitive whiskers serve as a superb radar system. This Pokémon hides in mud, leaving only its two whiskers exposed while it waits for prey to come along.”

Henry slid the Pokédex back into his jacket and quickly scrambled to his feet. The Barboach was zipping around in circles in the water, making worried noises and sparks shooting off from time to time. Henry slowly approached the Barboach. ”Hey, little fella, are you okay-“ Henry began, but the Barboach let out a frightened noise and spraying him again. Henry fell back to the ground, his body shivering as he did so. Now Henry was getting annoyed. ”Alright, you need to be calmed down!” He yelled, his hand sliding to his belt. He detached a
Pokéball from his belt and threw it forward. ”Pokéball, go!”.

Pokémon Declaration

The Pokéball hit the ground before the river, rolled forward, and then opened. The light burst from the ball and formed into Henry’s Pikachu, Remi. Remi was looking pretty good for a Pokémon who had finished battling 20 minutes before. Many of the cuts and bruises had healed, but some were still visible. As well as that, Remi didn’t seem to have his usual energy about him, yet he still looked determined and ready to battle. Henry wasn’t sure if he could risk it, however. ”Remi, you should rest. I can use Ewan or Charlie-“ Henry said, but was cut off as Remi turned to him and let a yell, sparks flying off him as he did so. Henry’s Pikachu was ready to fight and he wasn’t going to back down.

”Alright” Henry conceded, as Remi turned his focus back to the Barboach flying about in the water. Henry was nervous to give his first demand. The Barboach was unpredictable and could really damage Remi, who was already injured. However, Henry couldn’t help but be impressed by Remi’s determination. He really wanted to defeat this Barboach, but why? Well, Henry had noticed recently that Remi was always striving to become stronger and sometimes refused to rest or run from a battle. The small electric Pokémon seemed to never be content with himself. Henry wished the Pikachu would just relax and learn when to sit back and let someone else handle the battles. God forbid Henry would accidently let out Remi for a battle when he meant to call Ewan or Charlie. Remi would straight out refuse to return until he finished the battle either by victory or by unconsciousness.

”Okay, Remi, begin with quick attack” Henry said, and Remi obliged immediately. The Pikachu leapt forward, landing onto a rock sprouting from the river. He dived down on top of the Barboach, slamming it down deeper into the water. Henry grinned, happy with Remi’s execution. However, Henry realised something that he really should’ve have realised earlier. Remi was an electric Pokémon surrounded by water. He was in real danger. ”Shit! Remi, get out of the water quick-“ Henry yelled, but it was too late. The Barboach had got a hold of Remi and pulled him down into the water.

Henry ran to the shore and fell to his knees. ”Remi! Get out!” He yelled, seeing the distorted shape of the Pokémon flailing about in the water. Then, suddenly, Remi came flying out of the water, hurtling over Henry’s head, and landed on the ground behind him. ”Holy shit” Henry muttered to himself, then getting up and running to Remi. The Pikachu was getting to his feet, still looking determined as ever. However, Henry could clearly see how tired the Pokémon was. ”Remi, come on, let Charlie or Ewan handle this-“ Henry pleaded, but once again Remi let out a sharp growl. His cheek pouches were letting out sparks, and his fur was standing up. Henry sighed, and scratched his head. ”Alright, one more chance but if you get any worse I’m pulling from this battle” He said sternly. He didn’t sound that convincing, but Remi nodded and turn his attention back to the Barboach. It was still writhing around in the water, but it now seemed more angry than panicked.

Henry had to think of his next move. He couldn’t just make Remi go in head first or else he’d end up with the same result as before. Okay, Barboach was definitely some sort of water type Pokémon. So, Remi’s Thundershock move would be extremely effective! Wait Henry thought to himself. If I order Remi to use Thundershock, then I run the risk of electrocuting every Pokémon in the water. So, that move was out the window. While Henry was thinking of his next move, the Barboach had begun to fire water at Remi. The Pikachu was dodging the moves easily, but if the Barboach kept it up then Remi was going to tire himself out.

”Remi, get back from the shore!” Henry yelled, and Remi reluctantly agreed. He began to move back from the shore. He scampered to Henry’s side, out of shot from the Barboach. Henry could easily just walk away from the battle and move onto Central Godai, but if he did that Remi would never let it go. Also, if Henry was honest, he too was not ready to turn down a good battle. ”Okay, Remi, I have a new plan. We need to get that Barboach out of the water Henry said. He looked to Remi, who was giving him a confused look. Remi clearly didn’t understand how that plan worked. ”Okay, it doesn’t make much sense. It’s a water Pokémon, so getting it to voluntarily get out of the river will be quite difficult. However, this Barboach is really pissed off at us so I think we can get it to jump out”. Remi nodded and looked back at the Barboach, glaring at the water Pokémon.

The Barboach was not only angry, but was starting to express its feelings as well. It began firing water and mud from the river at Henry and Remi, which Remi did a pretty good job at dodging. Henry, in the other hand, was covered in dirt and water within a minute or so of the Barboach’s tantrum beginning. ”Remi, let’s end this because if I get any more water on me I’m going to catch pneumonia” Henry said through gritted teeth, leaning down to Remi’s level and whispering to him. After a few seconds, Remi nodded and the two separated, Henry running to the left and Remi running to the right. ”Okay Remi, begin!” Henry yelled.

Remi scurried nearer to the shore, which did put him in danger of getting attacked but was far away enough that the Barboach couldn’t catch him. Then, Remi began to pick up loose stones cast about beside the river, and began throwing them at the Barboach. At first, the Barboach was confused by Remi’s approach of assault. However, after a few stones managed to strike the Pokémon, the Barboach began to become even more irritated and angry. ”You’re doing well, Remi, just keep throwing!” Henry yelled, watching as the Pikachu hurled stone after stone at the Barboach. Finally, the Barboach snapped, and it flung itself onto the shore, flying towards Remi. Remi rolled to the side, and the Barboach flew past. Now Remi had the advantage.

”Remi, use quick attack!” Henry yelled, and Remi began to run towards the Barboach. The Barboach could see Remi coming, but due to it now being on land its mobility had somewhat left it. Remi leapt forward and knock the Barboach backwards. It tumbled a bit before coming to a stop. Henry grinned, yet the Barboach wasn’t finished. The Barboach turned itself towards Remi, and began to retaliate. The Barboach scooped up mud from the shore and started to fire them at Remi. Remi managed to dodge the first few hurtles of mud, but one managed catch him in the chest which knocked him back. Usually, Remi would be back up on his feet in a second, but he was tiring and slowly raised to his feet. Henry was running out of time. If he didn’t finish off this Barboach soon Remi was going to be unable to continue.

”Remi, use tail whip!” Henry commanded. Remi ran towards the Barboach, spinning around so that he was no longer facing the Pokémon. He wrapped his tail around the Pokémon and began to spin. The Barboach flew around in circles before Remi let go, and the Barboach collapsed to the ground. It let out a weak whimper, too dizzy to move. ”End it, Remi. Thundershock!” Henry yelled. Remi tensed his body, clenching his small fists as his cheek pouches began to spark. The electricity absorbed Remi, before letting out a cry and a wave of electricity was released. The wave absorbed the Barboach, who let out a cry of pain before going silent.

Henry sighed in relief. The battle was over, the Barboach now reduced to weak groans and whimpers. He looked to Remi, who was panting heavily. Henry ran to Remi, falling to his knees beside the Pikachu. ”Remi, are you alright?” Henry asked, and only getting heavy breathing from Remi. He immediately went his bag, pulling out another Potion. ”Okay Remi, I’m going to use another Potion. It won’t do much but it’ll help fix some of the bruises and wounds. We’ll get you to a Pokémon Center when we get to Metropolitan Avenue” Henry said as he began applying the potion.

A half hour later, Henry was walking down the path towards Dianette. The plan was to get a subway from there to Metropolitan Avenue. It would cost Henry quite a few Dians, but it was worth the cost if it meant a break from the travelling on foot. As he walked, Henry thought about how far he had come and where he was going. Henry was really only beginning his journey, but he had come a long way since he had left his hometown. He had definitely matured and was getting better and interacting with humans, albeit he had met a few jerks on his travel. He had been so focused on making it to Metropolitan Avenue that he hadn’t really thought about where he was going to go after that. He could go up north and visit his hometown, or he could continue west. He had never been to the West of Godai, so it would be a new experience.

In the end, it didn’t really matter where Henry went. As long as he had his Pokémon with him he knew he’d never truly be alone. Of course, as long he didn’t slip on anymore ice, he’d also be safe and happy!
