Chapter Four
Reedriver Bridge - Shaky waters but a sturdy Bridge

Pokémon Declaration

"Again! Faster this time, and it will better not be another impression of the Sun!"

The Combee buzzed tiredly but did as she was ordered. She gathered the same energy she'd been using for hours from her body and condensed it all in a little orange ball the size of a peanut. When she was finished, she searched for her target. It took her a few moments but soon she found one and fired the ball towards the Brute. In the corner of his eye, the Fighting type saw the Confuse Ray coming, he rolled his eyes at the 'speed' and quickly dodged out of the way. Had this been his first time dealing with her Confuse Ray, he'd certainly have be hit. As it was, after hours of doing this, even he had gained some kind of immunity to the ball's mysteriousness that would have otherwise frozen him in place.

Combee breathed heavily after her latest effort. It was an exercise she'd been repeating for hours and it was starting to take its toll on her stamina. She surprised herself that she hadn't fallen unconscious yet, although she would not be surprised if her Trainer didn't share the sentiment.

When the Trainer had informed her that he'd show no more mercy, he had not been joking. Her previous training program had been ripped to shreds and made from the ground up. It certainly tried to drive her into the ground. She was forced to train alongside the Brute, from the moment the Human woke up and released her, until the sun went down. Not that the Brute stopped then, no he kept going until dinner and even then continued if he felt like it. The only solace was that she could still take a break every two to three days.

Her new training program certainly drove one point through: she had been slacking off. She had been content with her previous regimen and was now paying the price. But even more so, she was weak. She could barely scratch the Brute without some ailment and even the Strangler had proved to be more competent than her. Beatrice had almost feared to be tossed aside by the Trainer due to her lack of use in the battle with the Strangler. The feeling had been eating away at her until the Trainer handed over her new regimen. While she didn't care about strength as much as the Brute, she did not want to let the Trainer down and risk being left alone. So here she was, performing her Confuse Rays from early noon till the evening until she mastered it in the eyes of her Trainer.

Hendrickson watched over the tired form of his first captured Pokémon as he reviewed her latest Confuse Ray. Size wise, it had been one of her best attempts. It was certainly better than the last ones which had been almost as big as her. Her aim had been decent and although it took a bit longer than he liked, he was willing to chalk it up to her being tired. Not that the same excuse would fly tomorrow when she's well rested. The speed of her attack on the other hand had been horrendous. It was obvious she'd been lucky during the Trubbish incident and Weepinbell battle. He didn't like to rely solely on luck, so he was going to make her master Confuse Ray. It was a vital move for her as she could not deal or take strong hits. The fact it allowed his other Pokémon to gain experience with the move was but a boon.

He looked to Boaz, who had already returned to his own work out. The Timburr had been performing push-ups, in a handstand, on his log. Hendrickson had stopped paying attention to the Muscle Pokémon's workout when it reached his fiftieth push-up. Not that he needed to watch over Boaz, the sweat he could see gathered around its log was only a testament of him actually doing it. He looked at the sun's position and decided to be lenient with the interrupted worker.

"You can just continue counting from when you got interrupted."

He got a grunt that would sound incomprehensible to anyone but him, but Hendrickson was well versed enough in his Boazish to hear the gratitude. He smirked for a moment, before he placed his blank mask back on. He looked over Beatrice's form and felt slightly pleased. Well, it would better to say that he felt less vexed, but it would have to do. She was slowly getting better, her stamina had increased over the last couple of days and she could now continue training longer than a pitiful two hours.

"That's good enough for today, Beatrice. We'll train on your speed tomorrow. Now, go to Vera and dodge her vine until either the sun sets or if I say so." He saw the blanched looks on her faces and noticed that Boaz briefly pauses in his workout for a second. Neither of them liked to practice with Vera as she tended to go a bit overboard whenever they got caught. As far as Hendrickson was concerned, it was a good motivation to both parties. Vera wanted to catch them and 'play', the others didn't want anything to do with her 'games'.

The Pokémon in question gurgled in confusion when she heard her name. That confusion turned to glee when she heard what was going to happen. She wiggled happily and her vine twirled around her. Her capture had been the best thing to happen her! Every day she got the chance to play and she didn't even get punished for it. Heck, the Human even encouraged her to play as much as possible and the boundaries he sometimes place were a riot to deal with! She wagged her vine at the Flyer before the game began. The thought of what kind of expressions those faces could make made her salivate in anticipation. Beatrice looked quite intimidated with Vera's facial expression.

'I don't think she realizes what kind of extra motivation she gives them whenever she makes that face.' He watched Beatrice gain a second wind, he was quite certain she shouldn't be able to dodge so well with how she had been acting earlier.

As he looked over his Pokémon, his eyes briefly glanced over the still capsuled Poochyena before dismissing it. He wasn't planning on using the Pokémon for himself so there was no need to waste time, effort or food on the creature. In fact, Hendrickson had released the Dark type only twice, the first time to check its injuries and let it heal and a second time to check it over again. That had been a few days ago, when they had just left Kagereta Woods. Somehow it had taken another week, six days of which were spent in the rain and through the mud, before he finally found his way out of the forest. From there, he'd taken a very long time to reach Reedriver Bridge. What should have been a mere two day walk, had become a week long training session. Boaz had outright demanded it after getting his draw with Vera, and Beatrice sorely needed to be worked through the ground.

Vera's training had been light, just as Beatrice's had been in the beginning. He first needed to know her strengths and weaknesses, but also couldn't demotivate her by being too harsh. Not that it had been too necessary as she took her training sessions almost as serious Boaz. Unlike the Fighting type, she always found a way to enjoy herself while doing them. Pull-ups? She did them by swinging forward as she pulled and letting herself down as she fell backwards, not unlike a swing. Push-ups? She used her vine as a spring and jumped up and down. It mattered little to Hendrickson how she trained, as long as she did. There was also the fact that she was a Grass type, so she had another way to get stronger by taking in a healthy amount of sunlight. He had to make sure she took in enough sunlight every day so that her health wouldn't just fall back, but increase.

Yes, he was quite satisfied with how his team was shaping up to be, he briefly looked at the gurgling Weepinbell. But maybe he should focus a bit more on Vera during their walk over Reedriver Bridge. He hadn't had the time to 'bond' - or whatever people called it these days - with her as he was far too busy making sure that Beatrice got more useful aside from producing Honey.

Hendrickson stared at the caught Combee who was struggling against her captive. He briefly changed focus to the snorting Timburr, before he watched the gleeful Weepinbell and then back at the Combee. He looked at the pleading look on her faces and promptly shook his head. He spun on his heel and made his way back to his camping stool, ignoring the chuckle, the cry and the grunt. As if Hendrickson would free Beatrice from Vera's grasp. She and Boaz knew the consequences of letting their guard down when dealing with her. She’d just have to deal with her current treatment and learn from it for next time.

He placed himself on the stool, placed his arms on his thighs, let his hands hang freely as he sat slightly bowed over. He watched at Boaz, who had changed exercises and now lay on his back with his log on his feet as he pushed it up and down. The simple movement was almost hypnotizing as he kept following the log's movement which spaced him out for a couple of minutes. It was the cry of Beatrice that pulled him out of his state and he saw how her three faces each had the same anguished expression, yet there were minute details that differed from each other. Hendrickson sighed, maybe some motivation would help? He grabbed his cook timer and turned to ten minutes.

"Beatrice." One of her eyes looked at him. "If you can get out before the timer goes off, you'll get the day off tomorrow." She shot him two grateful smiles while Vera frowned, both of which he ignored as he continued. "If you can't, then Vera can play with you tomorrow during your training." Beatrice looked at him as if he was the devil, Vera looked as if her birthday came early, and Boaz had momentarily stopped his exercise and then proceeded to send a small prayer for the Bug.

Hendrickson set the timer on his stool as he made his way to the tent. He had other things to worry about than what Beatrice's fate would be for the next day, like checking their provisions. He had spent more time within Kagereta Woods than he had expected and the week long training camp had certainly not been in his mind when he set out from town. But maybe he should make it a tradition to train for a week every time they leave a place. It wasn't as if he was pressed for time so he could afford it to take his travels slow and long.

Once inside his tent, Hendrickson grabbed his bag and pulled out all of their food items. From human to Pokémon food, conserved in cans or kept fresh in vacuum closed bags, everything. He laid everything open, sorted it all, grabbed a pencil and a notepad, and counted whatever he had left. Next he calculated what each of them ate in order to be full. This was followed by another calculation to see how long the food would last if he only served everyone the bare minimums, but would still allow one to function fully the next day.

He grabbed his Town Map and took a good look where he was and where he could go to. Going back to Kotoba City didn't even cross his mind, so it was easily scratched off the list. His eyes travelled a bit more to the centre. If he went to Dianette then he'd be able get in the town by tomorrow evening. Granted, he'd have to do nothing but walk and focus only slightly on training. He looked a bit more to the North. Wisteur Town on the other hand was at least a two days and a half walk.

The young adult scratched the top of his head with the butt of his pencil, but his thought process was interrupted by the ringing of the timer, which was followed by a cry. Hendrickson blinked, surprised that ten minutes had already passed. He then rolled his eyes as there was only going to be one Pokémon crying over the fact the timer went off. He popped his head out of the tent in order to be completely certain.

Just as he had thought, Beatrice was still within Vera's hold. The Grass type was jumping up and down in glee at having won the game, while Beatrice looked downright pathetic. Boaz was still doing his exercise, but that was no surprise. Hendrickson checked his watch and decided that Beatrice had had enough for today. Besides, Boaz needed some last minute training in as well.

"Vera!" The Flycatcher Pokémon looked at him with a pleased expression on her face. It promptly fell at his next words. "Let her go. Her training for the day is done, and you'll have her all day tomorrow." His gaze changed from the Combee to the Timburr. As if the Pokémon felt his gaze, the Fighting type stopped in his exercise and raised an eyebrow. "Instead, you can play with Boaz." His face turned a lighter shade while Vera's turned pleased.

The Grass type promptly let go of the exhausted Combee, who unceremoniously dropped on the ground, and hopped to the now standing Timburr. Said Fighting type was breathing heavily due to his work out, but he still stood in his fighting style. Vera's vine whirled excitedly while Boaz spun his log and scowled. "The same conditions apply as with Beatrice. However, Vera…" She looked at him with a twinkle in her eyes. "you only have to catch Boaz and keep him grounded for ten counts." The twinkle grew, and Boaz shot him a dirty look. One that he returned with an icy glare, daring the Muscle Pokémon to contest his orders. It didn't.

He then looked at the downed form of Beatrice and went back to the tent. She looked quite exhausted and appeared to have almost no strength in her. His eyes showed little compassion because if she had taken her training serious from the start then she wouldn't be like this. "Beatrice." One face tiredly looked at him. "You survived another day and did better than yesterday." She gave him a weak smile, one he did not return. But it wasn't necessary, she could hear a sliver of pride in his tone and hearing that emotion made her feel warm inside. "I suppose you can take a break. Return." He recalled the Bug type back to her PokéBall.

The blue haired man stared at the device for a couple of moments before he tucked it on his belt. He briefly looked at the fight between his two stronger Pokémon, before he walked back to the tent. He had some planning left to do.

"Do you think God ever gets stoned? I think so... look at the platypus."

The Sun had set, the Moon had risen and brought with it, its companions in the form of stars. None of which were gazed at by Hendrickson and his team as the man had decided to tuck in early for the night. This also meant that the man had no idea of his night time visitor. The creature had taken an interest in the man and his Pokémon since earlier that day. The creature had quickly found out just what Hendrickson was and what he was doing with his team. It had to admit, that this human was harsher than any of the others it had ever seen. But much to its amazement, none of the Pokémon had attacked the human for it and the Log Carrier even seemed pleased by it all.

The creature was very curious about the whole thing. How could these Pokémon take the 'training regimen' - if it the term heard correctly - but still continue on for more? It wasn't as if the human loudly praised them for their efforts. All they got was a nod here, a smile there and some words of pride. Maybe... this was what the human's way of praising them? It had certainly been surprised when the Flyer had smiled, simply by hearing the human's words, before being enveloped by that light and disappearing. The creature shook its head; it was far too tired to formulate an answer.

Maybe, it should go to sleep? Yes, that sounded like a good plan. Sleep now; observe tomorrow and maybe... maybe it should interact with one of them? Not the Log Carrier, he looked like he'd break someone in half for the heck of it. It wasn't going anywhere near the Catcher, it had seen what would happen if caught. But, the Flyer seemed nice enough. It nodded to itself, decision made, before it tucked in for the night itself, wondering what tomorrow would bring.

It was only hours later, when the Sun drove off the Moon and the sky turned a shade brighter, that there was any more movement in Hendrickson's tent. The sound of an alarm went off and the sole human stirred awake. The man stared at his Holocaster, his brain still not comprehending what was happening. It took a few moments before he realized he had been awoken by the device, but all Hendrickson did was push the snooze button and turn to his other side. He knew it was an useless action, the alarm would go off in another five minutes, but he couldn't help it. Hendrickson simply hated early mornings, and the only one he could blame was himself.

Unfortunately, Hendrickson could not even bask in those five minutes of silence because of the many grunting sounds coming from outside. He groaned in annoyance, a snarl on his lips, and tried to shove his head into his sleeping bag as deep as possible. It was a futile attempt, something he knew but couldn't help but try anyway. So he stared at the inside of his sleeping bag for a couple of moments before he closed his eyes and sighed. Staring aimlessly wasn't going to help him fall back asleep, so he might as well stand up.

He pushed himself out of his bag and quickly grabbed his snow jacket; he had no wish of freezing to death. He put on his boots, put his Pokéballs in his jacket and grabbed two empty bottles before he walked out of the tent. Hendrickson surveyed the area and quickly found Boaz, already hard at work with his log. The Pokémon stopped mid-swing, and nodded at Hendrickson before he returned to his workout. Hendrickson gazed at the Fighting type's form for a few moments, but was pulled out when a cold winter breeze went over him. He shuddered from the cold and was slightly jealous by Boaz' lack of reaction. No doubt his body temperature was high enough to not be bothered by such a cold breeze.

Hendrickson looked at the clear sky and allowed a smirk to form on his face. It was almost as if the weather was sorry for his treatment in Kagereta Woods as it had been nothing but pleasant since his exit. The worst he had gotten were dark clouds, but those had just drifted over him. His gaze fell on his starter, a calculative gleam present in his eyes. He smiled slightly and grabbed one of his Balls. Throwing the device in the air, Hendrickson watched with a smirk as Combee made herself known. The Bug type blinked a couple of times before her two outer faces took in her surroundings while her third watched Hendrickson.

The blue dyed man coughed in his hand and promptly received the attention of Beatrice's other two faces. "You'll have most of the morning nothing to worry about Vera. I plan on taking a more direct approach with her." His smirk grew slightly when he saw the grateful expressions. "Instead, you'll continue your training from yesterday. By noon I want your Confuse Ray to constantly be at least as small as yesterday, if not smaller. I definitely want to see improvement in its speed. We'll focus on aim in the afternoon."

Beatrice nodded her head before she flew off to Boaz and engaged him in conversation. Hendrickson rose an eyebrow in mild surprise when the Fighting type stopped with his exercise and grunted back without any anger in his tone. Both human and starter scoffed in humour at the Bug type's facial expression. He heard Boaz grunt something else, which wiped the surprise of off Beatrice and was replaced by an offended look before she turned her back to him and started focusing on her own exercise.

Hendrickson kept observing the two with a measuring glitter in his eyes before he shrugged. It'd be quite nice if the two could get along better. It wasn't that he wanted them to be best buddies - Arceus forbid they start being mushy with one another or go easy on each other, he snarled at the mere thought - but a healthier relationship would still be far more beneficial to him. It would certainly help in Double Battles, but that was neither here nor there. Hendrickson had some water to fetch and the river wasn't too far.

"You know what to do when someone or a Pokémon arrives!" He gave the two Pokémon one last warning; both gave a cry of confirmation, before he set off.

"Do you think God ever gets stoned? I think so... look at the platypus."

Hendrickson came to a halt a few metres away from the river. The young adult turned his head to the right and allowed his eyes to roam over that area. He then turned to the left and did the same thing, before checking his front again, just to be sure. The tension in his shoulders lessened slightly when he concluded that there was nothing around that could or would attack him. He then looked down at the sole Pokéball that still held its occupants and felt a nagging feeling in his stomach. The decision to leave two thirds of his fighting force back at the camp had been an annoying one to make, and he allowed a frown to form as doubtful thoughts formed.

He snorted in contempt at himself. Look at him, he second guessed himself and allowed doubt to cloud his mind. How pathetic he was. If he actually used his brain he'd realize that he was in little to no danger. While he only had Vera on his person, she was more qualified in this situation than his other two. After all, the Weepinbell had a versatile movepool that'd allow a quick and easy escape if the need arose. He checked his surroundings again and slowly went for Vera's PokéBall. There was no need to take any chances, and if she was already out she'd be that much faster to deal with any threats.

The Weepinbell appeared in a flash of light, with her back turned towards him. The Grass type looked to her left and right, probably in search of something, or someone. Hendrickson coughed in his hands and she jumped in surprise before Vera turned around. She warbled some nonsensical noises and waved at him with her vine. Hendrickson snorted at her greeting, his smirking mask put firmly on. He made a mental note to put awareness training in her regimen later. In the other two as well, now that he thought about it. Maybe he could make a bastardized version of hide-and-seek? He grabbed his chin with his right hand, with the index finger resting on his cheek, deep in thought. Unlike hide-and-seek, he would make it be more like search-and-destroy-or-be-destroyed. Those that failed to hide, or find, within a certain time limit were then to be punished. Maybe with some endurance training? The possibilities were quite high in quantity. The smirk on his face grew large enough to show some teeth.

Back at the camp, Boaz and Beatrice stopped their training for a second as they felt a shiver travel down their back. The two shared a look before they both stared at the direction Hendrickson had left from. Vera felt slightly more than just a chill due to her proximity. The smirk she saw was not an inviting one, it felt more like a dreaded one. She felt another chill travel down her back once Hendrickson lowered his eyes and made eye contact with her. In her opinion, those cold, calculative eyes were not something to look directly in, if you were unprepared. She wondered if this is what her prey felt when she had them in their clutches? If it was, she decided that she'd do everything in her power to not be left to the devises of someone else and feel that hopelessness. She liked to be on top, thank you very much.

Hendrickson broke eye contact as his plans for the new training program were finished, it would need some revision but it looked promising. He looked at his Weepinbell again with a raised eyebrow when he heard her sigh. He kept his gaze upon her for a couple of seconds, before he shrugged it off. She was probably sad that she couldn't found Beatrice or Boaz to 'play' with.

The man looked at the river and with a tap of his foot to get her attention; he beckoned Vera to follow him. The Grass type hopped next to his feet, and Hendrickson felt his earlier tension loosen even more with her physical presence. Once he got to the side of the river, Hendrickson crouched down and screwed open one of his bottles. He held the bottle cap in his other hand as he filled the bottle up. Askance, he could see that Vera waited patiently; the happy expression on her face informed him that she was also enjoying the Sun's light.

With his bottle full, Hendrickson twisted the cap over the bottle and grabbed his other one. When he was about to place the bottle in the river, he saw his companion stiffen in the corner of his eyes. He turned his head to the Grass type, a frown on his face as his eyes darted from Vera to their surroundings and back at the Pokémon. His first clue that was going to be trouble was when he heard the splash from behind him. The second when Vera's already wide eyes widened even further, just before she extended her vine. Hendrickson turned his head to his front once more and saw a blue missile coming straight towards him.

Everything felt as if it was going in slow motion. The missile crept ever so closely as his brain finally caught up with the situation and sent warning signals to the rest of his body. Hendrickson reacted by leaning his whole body weight over to the right in the hopes of getting the hell out of its path. His body listened to him, but it all happened too slowly, as if he would never make it in time. It felt like the missile was closing in by two inches while his body only moved by one. Just as it was only a couple of inches away from him, Hendrickson felt something tug at his left arm. He had no time to question what it was before he felt a pull and suddenly his body moved that much faster. Just in time as well, as the missile passed right by him, his own eyes kept a firm lock on it. Once his arm made contact with the ground, time sped back up to normal and he saw the missile fly straight ahead at high speed. He noted how it went slightly up in the air until it dispersed and showed his assailant, who turned in mid-air.

If he had to describe it in one word, that'd be 'vicious'. It looked like it'd like nothing more than to rip him apart with that impressive jaw. He also knew what it was, as he'd heard enough about this creature and its evolution to be cautious whenever he'd explore the sea. Carvanha, one of the more territorial Pokémon that exists, they're not to be trifled with. It is more common to find it in a school... of... Carvanhas... He turned his head to the river, fear clearly present in his eyes but it got quickly replaced by confusion. The river was absent of any other Carvanhas. Was it an outcast? Did it loose track of its school? Well whatever the reason, Hendrickson wasn't going to complain.

His thoughts were interrupted by the warbles of his Weepinbell, who gazed over him with concern in her eyes. If she hadn't been out and about, Hendrickson was pretty sure he would have been in a world of pain. He checked on the still airborne Water type and was happy to confirm it was stuck there until it landed. He then pushed himself upright, a grunt escaping his lips as he did so. He hung an arm over the knee of his left pushed up leg and allowed his rage at the Pokémon's audacity and his own stupidity of relaxing his guard completely to simmer and cool down. He glanced at the still worried Weepinbell, before he grunted, any thoughts of politeness and acting around the newest addition out the window.

"Vera, prepare for combat." The Grass type nodded her head. She had no idea what he was going to say, but he had no doubts she could gather an idea from his tone alone. He glared at the hybrid typing, which it returned his glare with one of its own. "I'm not letting it get away with this unscathed."

"Do you think God ever gets stoned? I think so... look at the platypus."

Carvanha glared at the human. The guts he had to take water from HER territory without HER permission! She had attempted to rip those guts right out of him, but the human had been able to dodge thanks to the Pokémon next to him. It was mostly yellow, only had a face and two leaves at its side. It fretted over him but was brushed off by the human as he pushed himself to a sitting position. She could finally get a good look at his face and was expecting anger, fear, and anxiety. Any of these were believed to be seen after getting almost skewered by her Aqua Jet. But all she saw was a blank facial expression. He looked unaffected by her assault on his person, as if it was something that happened daily. But when she looked him at the eyes, she realized how he truly felt. Even from this distance she could see the anger in his eyes that glared right at her. She kept her own, not planning on backing down from a human. She'd show him! She'd destroy him!

She saw him speak to his Pokémon but she didn't care. It wasn't as if the Pokémon could ever stop her. The Pokémon jumped in front of him a thin vine wiggled above it and Carvanha could see an expression in her eyes that pissed her off. Joy, excitement and a sliver of fear were present. The last would have pleased her, were the feeling not only within those orbs when the yellow Pokémon glanced at the human. It set her blood boiling. The Pokémon was more afraid from a lowly human than HER! She snarled in rage and decided right here, right now: she'd destroy both of them! She felt her rage fuel her strength and before she knew it, the familiar water from before surrounded her and she shot straight at the Pokémon.

Vera stared at the airborne Fish, excitement filled her veins at the thought of capturing this Pokémon within her vines. She wondered what kind of expressions it'd make, and it was only the warning from her Trainer that held her back from jumping head first into battle. The man had told her that if she was not to make a move until he said so and if he ordered her to do something; she did it without a question. The cold look in his eyes combined with the steely tone he used informed her that insubordination would not be dealt with kindly. It reminded her of when Beatrice had failed to live up to his expectations on the third day of training. The poor Bug type had gotten a significant less amount of food compared to what she'd gotten the day before.

Hendrickson himself ignored his Pokémon's wobbles and instead focused on the Carvanha. He was going to beat this Pokémon in the ground and maybe even catch it, just to make it suffer even more within his care. Not to mention, Carvanhas could become quite the beasts and raising it would teach him how to deal with a violent Pokémon. Now that the young man thought about it, he'd been quite lucky with his captures. Beatrice and Vera had accepted their capture quite well, but he doubted that this Pokémon would be so peaceful. Not with the snarl he could see on its face. A grin that showed some teeth grew, his anger slowly waning as more practical thoughts formed in his mind. The experience of dealing with a rebellious Pokémon would serve quite well, and if he got a decent Pokémon out of it, he would just write the previous assault as a risk he had to take.

He noticed water gathering around the Water type and braced himself to dodge whatever it would sent their way. He rose an eyebrow when it engulfed the creature which was then joined by his second one when the Pokémon shot towards them. He had not expected the creature to be able to shoot off like a missile without some kind of start. Not that it mattered, while it granted a high speed to its user, the attack had a glaring weakness. It was like a missile; it went fast, hit hard but also travelled in a straight line. So, it was quite easy to hit.

He looked down at his Weepinbell. "Vera, Vine Whip it in the face." His tone was emotionless and the Grass type had only to glance at his face to see once more that he meant business. Not that the Pokémon cared all that much, all she wanted was to get the Pokémon to squirm within her grasp. So she extended her vine and whirled it around her body. When she deemed the Pokémon close enough she sent her vine flying straight ahead.

Carvanha saw the object coming her way, but she just snarled at it. Her Aqua Jet had never been stopped before and it wasn't going to be now! She'd break whatever flew towards her and then she'd break the impudent creature that dared to attack her. So imagine her surprise when she felt something collide to her cheek that momentarily stopped her advance. Her eyes lowered and saw a vine. That was all she saw before she was directed off course and ploughed straight to the ground. The hybrid typing lay still, her brain had yet to catch up with the situation. But when it did, rage filled her veins like never before. She sent a glare through the cloud of dust that had kicked up to where she believed the couple to be. Only one thought was in her mind as she bared her teeth. She was going to murder them!

Hendrickson grinned slightly when he saw the vine and missile make contact, before the Water type was sent flying into the ground. His arms were crossed as he surveyed the battlefield. His hands rubbed his arms, mornings during winter were not warm. His grin fell and a frown formed when he heard Vera whine as she shook her vine. It was almost as if she hit something rough and had hurt her vine at the object. But that didn't make any sense, as the only thing she hit was the Carvanha... His eyes squinted in suspicion and he grabbed his Dex. He could only hope that it would confirm his thoughts.

#318 Carvanha, The Savage Pokémon

If anything invades Carvanha’s territory, it will swarm and tear at the intruder with its pointed fangs. On its own, however, this Pokémon turns suddenly timid.

He stared incredulously as he listened to the last sentence. There was nothing timid about this Carvanha, although it should be due to it being alone. He grunted in annoyance at the Dex' lack of information as he pocketed it away. It was just his luck that he found a Carvanha who didn't mind tearing stuff apart on its own. He allowed a sigh to escape before he focused on the cloud dust. Well, at least it meant it was less dangerous to catch and even if it proved useless, it might even fetch a nice price on the market. Right, time to continue.

"Wrap it up and make sure it can't escape. Once you do, bring it closer."

Vera nodded and sent her vine flying at the dust. First she cleared the dust away with a few sharp slaps before she finally found her target. "Huck~" Hendrickson rolled his eyes when he heard the glee within her voice. He had no doubt that the Grass type her eyes were twinkling in anticipation for what came next. He did smirk himself when he laid eyes upon the downed Water type. The glare it sent him only pleased him but he did not let his smirk grow any further. The Pokémon could have a few more tricks up its sleeves, and angering it unnecessarily would be foolish.

There was no need for Hendrickson to be so... compassionate of Carvanha's feelings. She already wanted to rip out his throat so what would a bit more anger change? She glared at the vine that was coming its way and cursed her lack of mobility. If she were only in the water, then she'd have no problem dodging this attack. She cursed herself for giving up her biggest advantage, but there was nothing she could do about it now. So instead she did the next best thing, she opened her jaw and then when the vine started to encircle her, she bit down it. Hard.

"Do you think God ever gets stoned? I think so... look at the platypus."

Hendrickson blinked at the Carvanha's attack, completely ignoring Vera as she jumped a few feet in the air while yelping in pain. He had not expected that kind of action. He had thought the Pokémon would have dodged with another missile. Oh well, this made things a lot easier for him. His eyes switched to Vera as she was still whimpering. He rolled his eyebrows at her reaction.

"Stop whimpering. Just shake it off." He ordered.

The Grass type nodded, a tear formed in the corner of one of her eyes, before she lifted her vine in the air and tried to drag the Carvanha with her. The keyword in that sentence was 'tried'. Because try as she might, the Carvanha did not budge an inch. With every try, Vera's attempt became more frantic and Hendrickson was certain that if the vine was of lesser quality then it would have long since ripped in two. He just sighed before he gave another order.

"If lifting it doesn't work, then why don't you try putting it to sleep?" While it sounded like a suggestion, Vera heard the displeasure in his tone and had to admit that she did feel rather silly for not thinking of it herself. If her vine wasn't stuck between the Fish's teeth she might have chuckled in amusement. Now she just felt annoyance. So she jumped until she was only a few feet from the Carvanha before a pained smile grew on her face. Then she inhaled and ruffled through the many poisons within her before she picked one and mixed it with the air in her lungs.

The Carvanha herself felt insulted by the words that the human spewed. Put her to sleep? Hah, as if that would happen! She would not let go of this vine even if it killed her. When the yellow Pokémon would come closer, she'd jump straight at it. Mouth wide open, of course. All she needed was a good push and the worm would not know what hit it. She glared when the Pokémon jumped in front of her and felt even more anger well up within her at the smile on its face. She bit down even harder on the vine and felt quite pleased when its pained expression returned. Her eyes narrowed when the creature took in a deep breath. She prepared herself for everything, but the Carvanha did not know that it would be futile. Because then, the Pokémon exhaled.

Hendrickson smirked when he saw the blueish cloud of powder exit Vera's body and engulf the Carvanha. The hybrid typing coughed a few times, probably an attempt to refuse access of the foreign powders, but he knew it was only a matter of time. The creature would need to breath sooner rather than later. He was rather confident that his patience would outlast its ability to go without air. Just as he predicted, the Water type stopped its trashing a few seconds later before it lay completely still. He noticed Vera had pulled her vine out of the Pokémon's mouth and blew on it. He had heard Carvanhas could bite through steel so the vine must be quite damaged. She'd heal up within a few hours, so it didn't matter too much.

'Well then,' He looked over the unconscious Carvanha. 'what to do with you.' One of his hands lightly brushed over his PokéBalls. He could try to catch it now while it no longer posed a threat. But it had been barely damaged so there was too much of a chance for it to fight back against the capture. He glanced over Vera and saw that she had a glimmer in her eyes that promised humiliation for the Carvanha. He smirked; he might as well beat the Water type down as much possible. It would hopefully be more docile when he called upon it later. Not to mention that he had not forgotten its attempt, either.

"Vera." The Grass type looked up at him, her vine was already twirling around in anticipation. "Use Growth. Let's say... two times, just to be sure."

The Flycatcher Pokémon blinked a few times before a smile grew and the sparkle in her eyes intensified. She wobbled in excitement but a grunt from him got her to actually do what was ordered. She looked at the sun, the greatest source of her energy and concentrated. She slowly felt power built up deep within her. The power travelled everywhere and she gleefully greeted the rush of adrenaline it brought with it. But the power was not content with presenting the feeling once. Just when she calmed down from the boost, she felt another rush of strength flow through her. She jumped in excitement at the feeling; she truly never got tired from the boosts of her Growth. She felt like she could take on the world!

Hendrickson watched the proceedings with a passive face and his arms crossed. He rolled his eyes when she moved rather erratically, no doubt the adrenaline made it difficult for her to sit still. Not that she ever sat still for long, but still. He supposed he could help her get rid of some of that excess energy.

"Use Vine Whip and don't stop until I say so." Vera looked up from the twitching Carvanha, not even in its sleep the Fish was nice to look at, and smiled at Hendrickson. While it was not her preferred course of action, she supposed she could pay the creature back from the treatment of her vine. Oh, and the attack on her human. Not even she had assaulted him yet, so she'd be damned if someone else got to be first. Hendrickson felt his neck hairs rise as a shiver went down his back. He promptly rubbed his arms again in order to regain some heat.

Vera raised her vine above her head and takes a good look at the sleeping expression of the Fish. She chuckled in excitement with only the thought of what kind of face it'd make in its sleep during her assault. She gulped the drool that had formed and almost spilled out, and then her vine descended. A large whack sound travelled through the clearing which broke its silence. She withheld a grunt of pain - the Fish's skin hurt! - and focused on the pained expression of her opponent. That face alone brought excitement to her which in turn helped her ignore the pain in her vine.

She slapped the creature another time and felt quite pleased when she heard a whimper escape its lips. Her body filled with joy and her vine twirled in happiness as she barely held herself back from wrapping the creature within her vine and strangle the light out of its eyes.

Hendrickson rolled his eyes at the Grass type's antics. He wished she'd just continue with her barrage instead of wasting his time as she pranced around. The young adult did frown every time Vera twitched after whipping the Carvanha. Was the Water type's skin truly that painful to the touch? He couldn't imagine, but he supposed he'd soon find out once the thing was within one of his Balls. He noted as Vera prepared for another whip, but something stopped her from going through with it.

Hendrickson raised an eyebrow before he heard a growl. He walked to the side so that he could see what made Vera stop her assault. There he saw the Carvanha, its eyes wide open as it glared venomously at Vera and periodically changed its target to him. The blue haired teen smirked in amusement. He truly wondered what it would, what it even could do. But, he supposed the Pokémon would need to act fast. He saw the way Vera moved and the movement of her vine, and knew she was going to attack within seconds. Having a weakened, awoken prey would be far too tantalizing for the sadistic Pokémon to wait on his orders.

"Do you think God ever gets stoned? I think so... look at the platypus."

If she could kill with her glare, Carvanha was one hundred and twenty percent sure that the worm and the human would have long since combusted in flames before they were slowly reduced to ashes. Instead all it did was making the human grin at her while the Vine held a mischievous glint in its eyes. It infuriated her how these two seemed to mock her. She had even been put asleep by them and she could feel the damage she'd taken during her forced nap. She didn't know now much longer she could continue on, but she'd be damned if she didn't at least take the smug expression of one of them. While she preferred to teach that human a lesson, he was too far for a surprise attack. So she settled for the Vine.

Her glare settled on the Grass type and she was pleased to see it flinch slightly from it. She then slapped her tail fin on the ground with enough force so that she slightly jumped in the air, but that was all she needed. The Carvanha covered her body once more in water before she blasted off in the air. Once she reached the apex of her blast, the hybrid typing spun the air so that she was now aimed at the ground and more importantly, at the Vine. A bloodthirsty smile grew on her lips at the thought of finally damaging the damn worm and beating it beyond recognition. She felt herself fall back down towards the ground and prepared her most devastating attack. She wasn't certain if she'd be able to keep going after this one as it dealt a lot of recoil, but she didn't care! She would hurt the worm, even if she had to sacrifice a fin!

Hendrickson raised an eyebrow as he saw the Carvanha shoot in the air. He was quite annoyed at the fact Vera had allowed the Pokémon the opportunity to think of a counter-attack. It would be slightly unfair to put the whole blame on Vera though, as he was partly to blame for not ordering her to deal the finishing blows. He clicked his tongue in irritation at the thought before he observed what the Carvanha's attack would be as it descended. He frowned as he noticed a yellow colour surround the Water type's body. His frown was blown off his face as his eyebrows shot up and his eyes widened as he saw the hue increase in size until it practically dripped off of the Pokémon as its descent sped up. No attack with that amount of speed and power behind it could be good for its recipient.

"Vera! Dodge!" Unfortunately the Grass type had been preparing her body to take whatever the Fish threw at her, confident she could take it, and then unleash a devastating Vine Whip to send it flying. So she was caught completely off-guard by the order to dodge and thus was unable to do so as the Carvanha plowed straight in her like a comet.

Hendrickson closed his eyes and grunted in irritation as the attack hit his Pokémon straight on. It seems that evasion training would need to be kicked up a notch. He opened his eyes but kept his distance from 'Ground Zero' as the impact had created a cloud of dust that obscured the state of the two Pokémon. He was in no hurry to put himself in danger by decreasing the distance with the Carvanha. He had to wait a few seconds for the dust to settle down before he could see any movement within the cloud. The first thing he saw was the Carvanha and he was immediately alarmed. When the dust was completely gone, his posture relaxed and a satisfied expression formed on his face as he saw the true state of the two Pokémon.

The Carvanha was held tightly within the clutches of Vera's vine, and while Vera looked slightly exhausted, the Carvanha looked completely spent. The Grass type held a sadistic glint in its eyes, even if the Water type's skin was painful to keep hold off. The Carvanha tried some last ditch efforts to crawl out of the hold, but it was far too tired to succeed, not to mention that Vera was far too thrilled to let go of her prey. Both Pokémon shared a glance, one with a snarl while the other carried a smile, before they looked at Hendrickson. The blue haired adult snorted at the expressions, the Dark type looked more pathetic than intimidating while Vera looked absolutely ecstatic at her catch. His normal grin grew until it showed a few teeth.

"Vera... Have fun."

"Huck huck!"

"Ra? RAAA!"

The Flycatcher Pokémon releases a joyous cry as she wiggled her body in excitement while the Carvanha released a confused cry. That quickly turned into one of despair once she saw the look upon the Vine's face and she felt the constraint tighten until she had trouble breathing. She tried to loosen the hold, but the damage she had accumulated was too much for her, and all she could do was squirm in discomfort. The Vine chuckled in delight at her pain and tightened the hold even more. She released a silent scream, hoping that the Pokémon would stop this torture and just knock her unconscious. But it was not to be, as the chuckles became louder. The Carvanha could only writhe in pain as the light was squeezed out of her. The last thing she saw before she lost consciousness was the human walking towards her with a small grin on his face.

It was only when Hendrickson had made absolutely certain that hybrid typing could not get free from Vera's hold that he stepped closer. His hands were tucked in his jacket's pockets and his everlasting grin was present on his face. He saw the Savage Pokémon's eyes roll backwards until he only saw two white orbs. If that wasn't a sign of unconsciousness, then Hendrickson didn't know what was. Vera had also noticed the state of her 'playmate' and frantically tried to shake it awake. He could see a tear forming in the corner of her left eye as the game was already finished. She let out a whimper of disappointment before she released the hold and retracted her vine.

Hendrickson glanced at the Grass type before he focused once more on the downed Carvanha. His mind was once more going to the pros and cons of catching the hybrid type. In the end he came to a conclusion that had less to do with facts and merits, but more with his personal preferences. With the capture of the Water type, he'd finally have a steady source of water not to mention that he'd be able to make the creature suffer from performing a sneak attack on him. It was more the second reason than the first that sealed the deal.

The adult grabbed one of his Great Balls, he doubted something capable of that last attack could be caught with a normal Ball, and threw it at the Water/Dark type. He watched the Pokémon be engulfed with a familiar light before it was sucked inside the device. It wobbled a few times, before the Ball stayed completely still. He bended over and picked the Great Ball up before he tucked it back in his jacket. He then looked at Vera, who had been watching the proceedings with a curious expression.

"It seems you have a new... playmate." He offered with his eternal grin on his face. The Grass type gained an excited expression at the thought having yet another vict- someone to play with. She wiggled her body in excitement and her vine extended slightly before it seemed to dance.

Hendrickson rolled his eyes at his Pokémon's antics before he spun on his heel and walked back to the river. Vera jumped happily after him and she kept dancing even as Hendrickson continued with his interrupted task, collecting water.

Encounter

When he arrived at his camp, Hendrickson expected everything to be as it was while his Pokémon were training. Much to his surprise, his expectations were not met. Off to the side he saw a couple of dislodged rocks sticking out of the ground that had most certainly not been there when he left. On the other side of the camp he noticed a few dented trunks with the clear mark of either Boaz' fist or his log. Speaking of which, Boaz was the only one that did what Hendrickson had expected of him, which consisted of performing his training. Although the Fighting type sported a snarl as he occasionally glared at his side. Beatrice on the other hand had decided to skip hers - he was going to have Vera assault her without reservation this afternoon - as she seemed to be conversing with a new Pokémon.

The Pokémon in question was clearly avian, so the question of its typing was quickly answered, with primary a blue colour to its feathers and a red forehead and chest. Hendrickson quickly identified the Pokémon as a Taillow, one of the more common Pokémon to be found. But just as the Carvanha, Hendrickson was under the impression that Taillows travelled in groups. He shrugged it off, the less there were the less trouble he'd be in. The Taillow looked like it tried to stay at ease, but the way its eyes kept shifting made it clear that it was quite nervous. Not that he quite cared for the Pokémon's feelings. No, instead he wished to know why Beatrice was conversing nonchalantly with the Flying type while Boaz tried to ignore the two of them. Well, there was no time like the present to find out. He stepped in the camp and nodded at Boaz, who had briefly stopped to greet him back, before he walked up to Beatrice and her... new friend.

His first hybrid type Pokémon had yet to notice his appearance, seemingly far too excited to be talking to the Taillow. It was only when she noticed that the bird's focus was no longer aimed at her that she turned around. When she did her three faces blanched as they saw Hendrickson's face. His smile was sincere and his eyes were closed. Her right face briefly noticed Vera jumping towards Boaz, who quickly discarded his training and took a fighting stance, before a cough brought her focus back on the human.

"Say, Beatrice. Why aren't you training?" The Bug type shivered in fear as her eyes shifted from him to Vera, who seemed to be in a slight spar with Boaz. If her extending her vine and Boaz knocking it away, before they repeated their actions but only faster each time, could be called a spar.

Hendrickson eyes then fell upon the Taillow, as if it was the first time he saw the Pokémon. "Oh, who is this?" The Pokémon in question gulped, whether it was nervous from his proximity or afraid due to Beatrice her reaction was yet to be determined, before it slightly dipped its head and released a soft thrill.

"Trr."

Hendrickson blinked in confusion, before he glanced at his Combee. Two of her faces kept track of his movements, while the third noticed how the slight spar between the two stronger Pokémon was slowly breaking out into a full out brawl. The Brute had just slammed the Binder on the top of her head with his log after she had slammed him in one of the nearby rocks. Beatrice was quite amazed by the Human's ability to ignore the escalation. She wasn't quite sure if that was a healthy mindset to have. She was pulled from her observation by the Human's cough.

"Now that I have your undivided attention." Hendrickson told her in an unamused tone; Beatrice at least had the decency to blush in shame. "Could you explain to me just what happened here and why neither of you," The teen raised his voice loud enough that the battling Pokémon paused for a moment as Boaz gulped. "were able to follow a simple order?" He raised an eyebrow at the shifting Combee. Hendrickson sighed before he turned around and faced his starter. "Boaz, get over here. Vera, go lay down somewhere and rest." The Grass type garbled to show it heard his order before it jumped next to his tent and proceed to fall asleep next to it.

Boaz looked quite thankful for the break; dealing with the Binder was always a pain in his ass. But when he saw the Human's facial expression, he fervently wished to be back fighting for his sanity with the Binder. He walked up to Hendrickson and sent a small glare at the Taillow, that didn't go unnoticed by the adult, before he grunted as if he wanted to know why Hendrickson called him over. "Tell me, Boaz. Why is it that when I return to my camp that not only do I see a wild Pokémon sitting here, I also notice Beatrice slacking off and ignoring the fact she had to train," The human glanced at the stuttering Bug type. "while neither of you followed my order to keep everyone and everything away from the camp in my absence."

The Fighting Pokémon grunted in irritation before he pointed at the Taillow, then himself before he gestured towards the rocks and the dented trees. He then grumbled in annoyance as he glared at Beatrice and the Taillow, who averted its gaze and ducked its head. That seemed to annoy Boaz even more as the grumble turned in a growl. Hendrickson cleared his throat to get Boaz' attention and sent an icy stare at his starter. The Pokémon crossed his arms and turned his head to the side. Hendrickson kept his stare on his only solo type Pokémon before he fixed his gaze upon Beatrice. The Bug frantically buzzed and encircled the Taillow, who squawked in surprise at the sudden close contact and almost tumbled of its position, before she buzzed from one place to another.

The man and Pokémon each gave her a dry look, before Hendrickson closed his eyes and started to rub the bridge of his nose. It was waaay too early to deal with all this. He hadn't even had breakfast yet, damn it! "Beatrice, please. Shut up." She promptly did as ordered. "That is much appreciated." He decided to congratulate himself as he refrained from twitching when she buzzed in happiness at his gratitude. After a few more rubs, the adult opened his eyes and shared a glance with the Taillow. When it noticed that they were looking each other in the eye, the avian broke the eye contact and focused on Hendrickson's jacket.

Hendrickson groaned in annoyance. Great, he found a timid one. He looked up at the sky with at tired look in his eyes. While he thought that this was some kind of punishment for having enjoyed the weather for the last couple of days, there was one thought that reigned supreme in his mind. 'It is way to early for this stuff... I need a cup of coffee.' He looked at the surrounding Pokémon before he looked back at the sky. 'I am going to need more than one, aren’t I?'

"Do you think God ever gets stoned? I think so... look at the platypus."

Hendrickson decided that no, he was not going to deal with all of this without any caffeine in him. It was way too early and the adrenaline from his earlier adventure had long since left. He already had had a far too eventful morning with the Carvanha assault, and as the Taillow did not look nor act hostile - it was rather polite, if not timid, in fact - Hendrickson decided that he could push the issue of its presence aside and focus on more important issues. Such as having breakfast and actually having coffee in his system. Besides, Boaz wasn't hostile to the avian - if he wasn't (trying) to beat it in the ground then he wasn't - and Beatrice acted friendly enough with the Pokémon - not that that was any ground of confirmation, the Bug type would be friends with anything they met if he didn't order her to beat it.

"Right, Boaz return to your training. Beatrice, keep an eye on the Taillow. If anything happens you'll be held responsible." He ignored the cry and the grunt as he walked to his tent so that he could finally do his morning business. "Vera," The Grass type lazily opened one eye. "if anyone causes any problems, silence them." He didn't even bat an eyelid at the grin, chuckle and the twinkle in her eye.

It was thirty minutes later that Hendrickson finished with his morning routing and was finally ready to fully take on the day. He sat on his stool with a cup of coffee in his hands and felt true bliss as the warm drink did its magic on him. He breathed in deeply through his nose and released the held breath through his mouth and took a look of the clearing. The first thing his fully awoken mind picked up was the Taillow, and he slightly narrowed his eyes at its presence. While he could not do anything about it now, he was going punish Beatrice and Boaz so that another situation as this would pop up.

He had rather liked the feeling of safety in his camp with his Pokémon out, and he wasn't going to give that up because they couldn't follow a simple order of eliminating everything that came too close when he was gone. Oh he was sure that Boaz had tried, the way he acted around the Taillow clearly showcased that. But Hendrickson didn't need 'tries'. He needed results. The way Beatrice acted didn't fill him with any assurance that she had even attempted to follow the order.

Speaking of said Pokémon, he noticed that Vera had gleefully taken up on his offer of dealing with problems as she saw fit. Beatrice was held firmly within her vine while Boaz was snoring away. He supposed it said a lot about their quality as guards, or lack thereof, if one single Pokémon could incapacitate both of them. Maybe that was why the Taillow looked ready to take off any time. At least, he applauded the Flying type for its survival instincts. However, it had wandered in a camp with two Pokémon who were, or should have been, prone to violence, so maybe it did not have those instincts as it had the common sense to not to annoy the one that controlled a very touchy-feely Weepinbell.

Well then, he supposed it was time to deal with his ... visitor. He finished his coffee before he looked at his Grass type. "Let Beatrice go and wake Boaz up." The Weepinbell did so by slapping the Fighting type's face until it finally rose from its slumber. The Pokémon in question looked ready to beat Vera in the ground, and as productive that would be, Hendrickson did not have the time or patience to deal with the two their antics. So he glared at his starter that stopped the Pokémon from raising its log above its head. "Boaz, leave it." The Pokémon grumbled under its breath before it did as ordered. He made a mental note to throw Boaz to the next couple of wild Pokémon they met. It would mellow him out and lower the chances of insubordination. He noticed the Taillow look at their proceedings with a tilted head, confusion written blatantly across its face.

"Right then." It squawked in surprise as Hendrickson focused his attention solely on it, an inviting smile on his face. The avian turned its gaze downcast and the adult had to bite back a groan. Great, it really was a timid one. "Why are you here?" 'And why aren't you unconscious or at least held captive? Better yet, why haven't I ordered your beating yet?' The Taillow suddenly found a patch of grass far more interesting than his question. He raised an eyebrow at the reaction. Fortunately for the hybrid typing's health, Hendrickson had his morning fill and thus he had all the patience in the world. While the Taillow seemed to think on what it should do, Hendrickson busied himself by overlooking the interaction between his three Pokémon.

Vera and Beatrice seemed to have an exciting conversation, with Vera being all smiles while Beatrice had an agitated look, a pouting look and a third one that kept an eye on the Taillow. Boaz gave a short input, but he didn't get pulled in too deep in the talk. Hendrickson saw the looks that the Taillow sent his way in the corner of his eyes, but decided to ignore them. It was only when the conversation between his Pokémon looked like it would become more physical that the Taillow decided to clarify his presence.

"Trrr." The conversation came to a hold as human and Pokémon stared at the Taillow. To be more specific, they stared at the extended wing that pointed at Hendrickson. The blue dyed male raised an eyebrow. The Taillow then pointed at itself, then back at him. It repeated this action a couple of times, until it releases a squawk of irritation and pointed, quite energetically, at him. But this time it was less at him and more at his belt and what hung on the belt. Hendrickson grabbed his last Great Ball and pointed at it with his eyebrow still raised. The Taillow grew a grin and nodded its head. The human gained a calculative glint in his eyes as he looked from the Flying type to his Ball and back again. His friendly smile slowly melted away as his face became a blank mask while he tucked the Ball away.

"You." He pointed at the Pokémon. "Want, for some reason, join me." It nodded its head. He crossed his arms. He was quite sceptical of the offer. Why in the blazes would this Pokémon decide to join him? Hendrickson gave the Flying type a once over. 'It doesn't look strong. But then again,' He glanced at his Weepinbell. 'neither does Vera. Hmm, maybe the Dex has some info that'd help.' He grabbed the device from one of his jacket's pockets and aimed it at the Taillow.

#276 Taillow, The Tiny Swallow Pokémon

Taillow courageously stands its ground against foes, however strong they may be. This gutsy Pokémon will remain defiant even after a loss. On the other hand, it cries loudly if it becomes hungry.

Hendrickson blinked at the information. He had to reread it a couple of times before it dawned to him that Taillows were, or could be, juggernauts. He struggled to hold back the smile that was fighting its way. He couldn't prevent a small grin, though. He most certainly welcomed defiant Pokémon. They proved to be quite motivated in proving themselves, if Boaz was any indication. But he wasn't going to just accept the Pokémon like that. No, he liked to see what it could offer. No sense in catching a Pokémon if it was nowhere near his other Pokémon strength wise. He had enough on his plate with making sure Beatrice got more useful. He tucked the Dex back in his jacket before he addressed the Taillow.

"I'll humour you, why would I even want to have you join?" The Pokémon averted its gaze and only let out a soft trill. "Prove yourself." It looked at him with a wide eyed gaze. "Have a mock battle with one of my Pokémon and if you do well enough, I'll take you with me. If you don't, well..." He shrugged as he opted to not finish that sentence. The Taillow shivered at the tone he used. Hendrickson ignored it and instead gave a look at his team. Every one of them was in a disadvantage type wise, but one of them could deal with that aspect. The fact that this mock fight would allow said Pokémon to blow off some steam was a boon.

"Right, let's have you fight Boaz." The Taillow gulped as the Timburr cracked its knuckles with a smile on its face that showed too many teeth to be considered friendly.

"Do you think God ever gets stoned? I think so... look at the platypus."

The Taillow blinked confusedly as he stared at the Log Carrier, who stood a few wingspans away from him with a grin on its face and in a battle stance. How had it come to this!? All Taillow had wanted was to join the Human and his team after his meeting with the Fellow Flyer. While he could only understand the Pokémon slightly, he could clearly hear and feel the affection in her tone whenever her current situation was explained. Her affection sometimes took a nosedive into sadness, if not depression, but those episodes only lasted for a couple of seconds before she regained her energy. It made him even more interested in meeting and perhaps even joining the Human.

His meeting with the Log Carrier had been less fun, as the Pokémon had immediately attacked him without any warning. It had taken a few minutes before Fellow Flyer was able to calm the Log Carrier down, but by then said Pokémon had already thrown multiple rocks around the camp and dented a few of the younger trees. Due to his distance, the Taillow only had a crude idea of what was going on and why they were arguing, but the few things he picked up only served to pique his curiosity even more. After all, to see loyalty in the Pokémon for a human that seemed, in his eyes, to abuse them so was a mystery to him. It made him wonder if he could feel the same way for the Human, and if he could find companionship if he travelled with them.

Yet, instead of being welcomed with open arms as he had seen other humans do when a Pokémon offered to join them without a fight, this one wished to see his potential?! But why?! Was he truly so pathetic that no one wanted him even if he offered himself up? Was he that worthless? He looked away from the Log Carrier and watched the Human. The Human sat on his stool, his attention completely focused on the two of them and the Taillow saw the same glint in his eyes as when he had pulled out that round, blue and white item. He felt brave to admit that he did not think of it as a natural expression, but the other Pokémon didn't seem to show any discomfort so it was probably nothing. The Taillow blinked when it saw the Catcher point with its vine to the avian’s front.

The Pokémon shifted his head to his front and squawked in fear as the Log Carrier was almost upon him. He frantically flapped his wings as he jumped backwards, barely evading the log, before he was airborne. He flew over to the branch of a tree in order to have a better look of the area. He narrowed his eyes when he saw that the Log Carrier didn't immediately attack him, but instead stood still with its eyes closed. Taillow was shocked as he felt a very familiar aura gather around the Pokémon's body. But the shock quickly wore off and was replaced by confusion as his opponent crouched, took hold of the ground and ripped out a small piece of ground. It then took aim and as a smile grew on its face, the creature hurled the piece of Earth at him.

On the sidelines, Hendrickson raised an eyebrow at his starter's choice of action. He briefly glanced at all the rocks around the camp, he noticed Beatrice sigh and shake two of her heas as a third rolled its eyes, before he looked over the Taillow and saw it tilt its head in confusion. Apparently the Combee and Taillow were just as confused as him why Boaz would perform a Rock Throw. From what Hendrickson had earlier seen of the Taillow's body, the Pokémon didn't even have so much as a scratch on its body. With the way the rocks were aligned, Hendrickson had quickly concluded that the Taillow had dodged each rock, quite easily if its state was any indication.

He blinked and the Taillow was no longer on the branch, which was promptly broken off by the force of the rock. He had to blink a couple of times in order to progress what had just happened and it was only with Beatrice's cry that he found the Taillow in the sky. Hendrickson scratched his chin in interest. At least one thing was already certain of the Pokémon, it was quite fast. Faster than Beatrice at least and she was his fastest Pokémon. He glanced at her expression and saw that she came to the same conclusion, as her leftmost face had a worried expression. He withheld a smirk as he focused back on the Taillow. Maybe this'll motivate her to train more and harder, because the Taillow had already proven itself to be superior to her in speed. Sadly, that was the only thing she had truly excelled at, so he supposed he'll see what would happen in the next few weeks.

'Well then, let's see if you're as strong as you're fast.' He thought as he leaned back in his stool and crossed his arms.

Boaz grunted in irritation as the Bird dodged its attack once more. He knew that it could dodge his rocks, but what else could he do?! It was faster than him and it was able to retreat in the air. Until he could get it to stop for a moment then he was a sitting Ducklett! He growled in frustration as he pulled another rock out of the ground and threw it at the Bird, cursing the damn thing when it effortlessly dodged the attack.

Taillow ducked under another rock and looked at the Human who looked... interested? He blinked a few times before he flew closer to the human to check if he what he saw was a... Nope, it looked like the human truly had a look of interest. He saw the expression in his eyes, and Taillow was well versed in seeing that emotion in other creature's their eyes. Just... never aimed at him. Could it be? Did this human find some worth in him? Could he be useful to someone? Could he- Dodge that incoming rock?!!

Taillow had been so immersed in his inspection of Hendrickson that he didn't see the rock coming his way until the last second. He quickly tucked in his wings and allowed gravity to pull him under the rock's trajectory. Only when it passed over him, did the Flying type extend his wings again and rode the air currents. He watched the Log Carrier in order to see if he was going to throw another rock, but much to his confusion the Pokémon stood frozen. Its lips were parted and its wide eyes stared at something behind Taillow with mild fear. The bird turned his head and his eyes widened when he saw the rock flying straight at the human’s head, who for some reason didn't even try to move out of the way. It realized why when the Catcher jumped in action. With its vine the Catcher easily took a hold of the rock and changed its direction so that it landed a few feet in front of the human. Taillow stared in amazement at the brisk action and the trust showcased by the human. If... if he could be part of something like that, how fulfilling would that be?

Hendrickson barely batted an eye when the rock landed in front of him, courtesy of Vera's quick action. He shared a look with the Grass type and nodded his head in gratitude to which she chuckled and spun her vine. He then focused his gaze upon the Taillow who had shown a clear head in that situation. Flying over it or to its side would still have assured that the rock would have at least clipped its wings, so ducking underneath had been the most logical course of action. Afterwards, Hendrickson looked at Boaz and saw the expression on his face. The human closed his eyes and warmly smiled at his starter. To Taillow it looked as if the Human was trying to assure his Pokémon that he was fine, but said Pokémon did not share that thought. The Fighting type gulped loudly while the Bug and Grass type took a few steps back. They both had a grin on their face when they thought of what punishment Boaz would go through for this blunder.

Hendrickson noticed that the two Pokémon were no longer fighting, so he addressed them. "There's no need to pause the battle for such an... inconvenience. Boaz will make sure he won't make another mistake like that, isn’t that right?" The Pokémon in question rapidly shook his head to which Hendrickson smiled. "Well then, maybe it's time to finish this? The day is still young and I'd really like to do some training before we set out." He looked at his watch. "I'll give you five more minutes to show your potential. How does that sound?" With that he looked back at the Pokémon with his legs crossed and a pleasant smile.

The Taillow became nervous, wondering what it had to do. It was to be expected, he had only dodged everything that came his way and hadn't even tried to counter. He looked over at the Log Carrier and decided to gather his courage, no matter how little of it there was, and at least damage its. Besides, he could be excused from attacking as a little pay back for all those rocks. Taillow ignored the Log Carrier, who had taking his battle stance once more, and flew further away from the Pokémon. Once he deemed that the two were a good distance away from one another, the Taillow focused his energy to his eyesight; it would make spotting a part of his opponent's body that would deal additional damage far easier. With his preparations finished, the Taillow flew back towards the clearing, the closer he got the faster he seemed to be.

Hendrickson was quite interested in the Taillow's antics. It hadn't shown any signs of giving up so he wondered why it had retreated to such a distance. The Pokémon was clearly out of Boaz' range and, he shifted his eyes to his starter, said Pokémon felt quite insulted due to the Taillow's blatant ignoring of the Fighting type. The Timburr was shaking in his place and he slammed his log a few times in order to vent his pent up anger. When he noted that the Taillow had finished its set up, he saw that the Flying type had quite the determined look. Now he truly wished to know what it was going to do, for it to gain such an expression. Boaz had also seen the movements and the Fighting type readied himself. Before they knew it the Taillow's speed had picked up drastically until streaks of white started to surround him. Hendrickson's eyes widened slightly. 'Don't tell me... another one!?'

He noticed how Vera had stopped her wiggling and paid full attention to the scene. It felt too similar to what happened with the Carvanha not even an hour ago. Unlike Vera's situation, Hendrickson felt far calmer as he saw that Boaz had taken a stance that'd allow easier evasion. The Pokémon may be a hothead, but he wasn't stupid... well not completely. However, that composure shattered when the Taillow disappeared from their view and the next thing they knew the Flying type had already breached through Boaz' defence and was digging in his side, beak first. The force of the attack sent Boaz skidding over the ground, his teeth ground together as he tried his damnedest to stay upright and prevent the Taillow from having the satisfaction of bowling him over. He was not given any respite, however as the Taillow disappeared from his view again, before it slammed in him once again. Luckily for Boaz, the damage was less severe this time and he took full advantage of that. His teeth ground once again as he bit past the pain and he grabbed a firm hold of the Flying type's neck. The avian had less than a moment to widen its eyes before it was slammed in the ground with all of Boaz' weight and strength behind the slam.

Hendrickson had a full blown smile as he watched the proceedings of the battle. The Taillow had outdone itself! It had easily breached Boaz, his sturdiest Pokémon, his defence and with enough force to send the Pokémon skidding. Not only that, it had quickly taken advantage of Boaz' loss of balance by quickly following up with another attack. He had a vague idea what that first attack had been, but he would be a fool to let that potential go. His excitement toned down as he saw the Taillow squirm beneath Boaz' hold, who was most certainly determined to keep the avian there. His smile faded and made way for a grin as his eyes gained a cold gleam. 'Even if its performance today proves to be a mere fluke, then I suppose I can always just trade it away.'

But first, he had to prevent Boaz from further harming the Pokémon. He stood up from his stool and made his way over to the two Pokémon while slowly clapping. The two Pokémon stopped their battle for dominance and looked at him. The adult smiled at the two of them and slowly stopped clapping. "Boaz, do release your captive. This was after all only meant as a mock battle. No need to be so violent." The Muscle Pokémon snorted but did as told. He then took a couple of steps backwards, to which he received a subtle nod from Hendrickson. The human then focused on the Taillow, crouched down and shot it a friendly smile.

"Well done, well done indeed. I do believe you have succeeded in convincing me to add you to our growing family." He ignored Boaz' snort and kept his gaze upon the downed Taillow who pushed itself upright with its wings. It looked at him with wide eyes and released a soft chirp of confusion.

"Chpr?"

Hendrickson raised an eyebrow in his mind, but on the outside he opted to laugh softly. He grabbed his last remaining Great Ball; a mental note was made that he needed to seriously stock up on them, and presented it to the Taillow. The Flying type stared dumbly at the Ball, then at him, then at Beatrice who hovered above them who nodded with three beaming smiles, and then the Taillow looked back at him. Slowly, tears formed in the Pokémon’s eyes and it released a trill that had happiness and gratitude dripping from it.

"Prrrr!" It promptly pushed the Ball's button and allowed itself to be engulfed by the light before it was pulled in the device. Hendrickson had to blink a couple of times at the Taillow's reaction before he shrugged it off as its antics. He grinned at the now filled Great Ball and picked it up. The adult stared at it for a few moments before he tucked it on his belt. He would let the Pokémon nap for the rest of the morning; he wasn't lying when he said he wanted to get some last minute training.

He walked back to his tent and it was only then that he halted. The memory of yesterday wherein he counted their remaining provisions returned and the sole human stood still as her remembered it. He stood there for a few seconds that until he slowly raised his arms and put his face in his hands. Their already limited supplies had just decreased even more with the capture of not one, but two Pokémon. He stood still for a few moments before he dared to look at the sky.

"At least it is a nice weather." He muttered. Then he noticed a couple of grey clouds in the far horizon and promptly groaned. "Ugh, I need another cup." His three Pokémon shared glances with each other, wondering what was wrong with their Trainer before they shrugged and wrote it off as the antics of a human before they followed him to the tent.
