James sat at his desk. His shift was nearly over... His fingers tapped at his desk, rolling over each other. He pulled out a folder again, looking at the picture of his son.

Lucio was such a good kid... James just wished that his son could break free and take the world by the reigns. Flipping through the papers he found the trainer card again. He kept meaning to give it to Lucio, but was now a good time? So many of Lucio's friends had already gone, he was alone again.

James dropped the file and held his head in his hands. Arceus what was he to do? He pulled out his phone, bringing up pictures of his Furret. James got along with the family pokemon just fine. Would he be alright?

After losing his thought in photos, he brought up a text, writing to his wife, Marie.

"Hunni, I'm gonna b a bit late home from work 2day, mayb 3 or 4, mb 430. I'm just picking stuff up. Love you <3"

He sent the rushed text and stood up, grabbing the folder and his bag before signing himself out and heading down the street. He threw his bag in the back of a slim, black car and set the trainer folder on the passenger side seat. Hopping in the car James was determined now. He knew his wife would be worried, she would be mad. James knew though, as much as he didn't really want his son to leave so soon, this is what he needed.

Pulling into the sports goods store, he scratched at the fine shave on his chin again. He missed a hair again, like usual. Getting out of his car he shook out his back, standing up at a tall 5' 11". He pulled at his tucked shirt, letting the polo's trim out of his belt and giving him a more casual look.

Walking inside, he scratch at the dark brown hair as he began to browse the isles. He picked up a nice bag, black and blue. Obviously used for hiking. He looked around for a while, getting a few supplies and throwing them into the bag, in place of a cart.

He stopped, looking at a nice pair of running shoes. 10.5's. Same size as Lucio... He picked them up, looking them over. His son needed good shoes for this, something that would hold for a while. He saw the price tag and caught his breath. This is what he was doing. He was making a life for his son, and his son needed the best. He gave and nod and took a box of shoes as well.

When was the last time Lucio had gotten a wallet? Thinking back, the one he has now is beaten up. The chain fell apart, and the few places to put things were getting holes. He looked around and found a good, Nylon wallet. Nothing too special, but it wouldn't degrade as quickly as leather.

He licked his lips as he reached the counter, noticing a few things on the shelves. He set the bag, now heavy with supplies, on the counter, as well as the shoes.

"Is this all sir?" The clerk asked, smiling as though she knew what he was getting it for.

"Umm... Actually, can I go ahead and get some pokeballs as well?"

He asked, pointing up to the shelf behind her.

She picked up a small package of five pokeballs and set them down next to the bag. "One package, or a few more? We have a special on pokeballs this month."

"No, that's fine." He said, letting her nod and scan the items. He sat there for a moment, everything catching up to him now. One last thing. This last thing, it was going to cost him.

" *dian* 153,051 please. Cash or credit?"

He sighed at the number, knowing it was going to be much worse with the next, and final purchase. "Debit actually." He said, swiping the card. He blinked a bit, hitting yes at "Cash back" and selecting *dian* 1,000. It would be a nice present to slip into Lucio's wallet.

The cashier began to pull out a plastic bag, but James stopped her. "No need, I'll just use the bag." He said, picking up the black and blue hiking bag.

She nodded and gave a friendly wave. "Have a good adventure!"

James smiled. "I'll let my son know you said that." He said, giving a short laugh.

Setting the bag of supplies and the box of shoes in the trunk, James pulled out his phone and began to ring up a friend, before getting into his car.

"Hey! Daniel! How are you doing bud? Nah, Lucio is fine, no no, Marie is doing well too. No, I wanted to ask about that friend you had. The one who's breeding the kind of pokemon a new trainer gets at a lab? Yea. Yes, I know it's expensive, that's why I'm calling in your favor..." He pulled the phone away from the shouting.

"Geeze.. I know, alright. You did say so though. Hey! Don't you dare make be bring up Volstik town again! You know you owe me." He smiled again. "Okay, alright. Oh, so it's actually not too far away. Just tell him you sent me then? Alright, cool. Thank you. Yea yea, don't worry. The cops aren't gonna hear from me. Arceus though, Daniel, you go back there and I really can't help you out again. I don't care how good they are... Nope, I'm not trying even once. Daniel. Listen, Tauros meat just isn't good in my opinion! Okay, yea. I'm hanging up now. Bye Daniel."

James let out a heavy sigh, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel.

Lucio pat down the soil of the new berry tree sapling again and coughed a bit. He turned around, looking at the driveway. "Dad is late..." He said, standing up and getting the water pail. He let it pour gently, he didn't want this one to get over watered. It was in a decent place, but the shade of the house would likely stop water from drying up as quickly.

He coughed again, and began putting his tools away, heading up the porch to see Furret lounging on one of the chairs. "Hey bud..." He said softly, stroking him behind the ears.

Heading inside, he washed his hands, seeing his mother sitting with the newspaper and a mug of coffee. "Mom, how many cups have you had today?" He asked, giving her a hug. She smiled, and replied "Ah, I think this is my fourth... Heheh. You know. I pulled a joke on your father once. I was drinking a lot of coffee, and as he went to open the door, I told James, "Careful out there, it's kinda muggy today." and when he-" She stopped her story, hearing a car pull up. "Oh, speaking of. That must be your father, I think he went to get groceries. Go ahead and go help him."

Lucio nodded, and went to the door to greet him. "Hey dad, where-" He stopped, seeing a huge bag over his dad's arm, and a small white box with neatly tied red ribbon. "Dad... What is all this?" He said, voice a bit quieter now.

James simply held one finger up to his son, signaling him to wait, bringing everything into the kitchen. "Lucio. I want you to grow up to be a good man. You know that, right?"

Marie looked up from her paper and nearly choked on her mug of brown Awakening. "James... No. Not yet." She said, clearing her throat. She knew her voice was lost... But... Lucio. He just wasn't ready.

"Marie, I'm sorry, but he needs to. All of his friends have left, I can't stand the thought of him being so lonely like this, he needs to go out and..." James cut himself short and handed Lucio the present.

"Lucio. With this, I want you to explore the world, become a good trainer and break free from your shell. I want you to come back a good man, a better person."

Lucio held the box in his hands carefully, pulling away at the ribbon, letting it fall away in his fingers. Swallowing, he opened the top, already knowing what the expect. There, was a shining red and white ball. A pokeball. A pokemon. He closed the box again and grabbed his father.

"Dad... I love you." He said, holding his face into his father. Nearly too excited to move. He grabbed the bag in his excitement and headed up the stairs as James turned to Marie.

"Listen Marie. I know you don't want him to leave. I really don't either but-"

"Then why... Why now, I... I don't want to have to go through this."

James sighed, sitting next to his wife and holding her. "I know, but it was going to happen at some point. I just want him to be happy. He went and got his licence, and he's been saving little by little with all the yard work for his friend's parents, but it's not adding up quick enough. You know as well as I that he would be so excited to go, that as soon as he got a pokemon he would end up ill-prepared." James sighed, before the door swung shut. They both jumped, and ran to the door, seeing a note stuck to it.

"I love you both. I'll try and come back around Christmas time to come and see you again. <3 - Lucio."

Marie pushed past James and opened the door, but had no view of her boy now. All the trees in their yard blocked her view. "L-Lucio! Wait!" She called, to no reply. She turned around, James now before her. She wrapped her arms around her husband and began to cry. James' breathing began to falter as he held back tears of his own, holding his sobbing wife.

Lucio ran out of breath rather quickly. Here he was, in the middle of town, hot as hell, with his basic supplies and a new pokemon. He began to walk again, getting himself to a shaded and secluded area. There weren't many people around, and those who were were all doing daily shopping. He wouldn't be bothered.

Lucio sighed and pulled out the pokeball again. Lucio had left the box back at home, but he wouldn't need it now. Right now, he just wanted to see his partner. "Alright. Pokemon. Come on out please!" He said, holding the pokeball out in the shade with him.

In a burst of red light, its form materialized. Bright yellow, white and red. He knew this pokemon in an instant. The one he'd been looking at the most online. Whenever Lucio looked at the pokemon that labs offered, he constantly looked back at this one. Fennekin.

He took out the paper that came in the little box again. "Fennekin, female. Seems to be rather playful. Gets along well with the other pokemon here."

The note must have been for whoever sold the pokemon to Lucio's father. Lucio knelt down, looking his pokemon over. The Fennekin sat there, wide smile and bright eyes.

"Well... Hello there Fennekin. I'm Lucio. We are going to be partners from now on." He said, the excitement welling up.

It cocked it's head for a moment, and everything around Lucio got warmer. He saw the little fox's ears light up and watched as small embers drifted from them. "Fenn!"

Lucio laughed, a tear beginning to shine in his eyes. This was going to be the start of his pokemon journey. Something almost every kid dreamed of doing!

He stood up, and pulled his map from the bag as well. "Well then! Fennekin... No... How about..." Lucio thought for a minute, his gaze falling to the ground as he remembered things he'd read about. "Willow... Willow the Fennekin. Do you like that one? I think I want to call you Willow." He said, looking back to her.

Willow just sat there still, smiling as she waited for an order. "Fennekin~"

Lucio giggled a bit, and nodded. "Well.. Willow it is then. Alright. Follow me, we're gonna go out and explore." He said, stepping from the shade, into the summer heat and following the map toward the Weswell exit.

It was early in the morning, a time when the town had just awoken, itself. The sun was beginning its daily path, sitting just above the horizon line, illuminating the sky around it to be a vibrant yellow. That very same light shined through a window and set on Darrek’s bed, laying just to the right of his head and on his chest. The house around was mostly quiet, with the exception of his light snoring, and an awakening Whismur.

The Whismur let off a small yawn as she rubbed her eyes and arose from the large pillow that was being used as her makeshift bed. She took small steps over to the door and lightly pounded on it, remembering that the hall was just beyond it. No luck. She couldn’t figure out how to open the thing. She would just have to get her human friend to do it for her. She made her way to the side of the bed, which was right beside the door, and struggled to climb onto it. Once on the bed, she plopped down onto the human’s chest and stared at him.

Darrek’s huffed, his eyes shooting open as something heavy was suddenly upon his chest. Through blurry eyes, he discerned the light purple and yellow, and was quick to realizing that it was Judith. Her stomach grumbled as he blinked a few times. “Good morning, Judi- “, was all he was able to get out before she let out a sharp, loud shriek. He jumped, hitting his head against the wooden headboard. “Gah”, he yelled in pain, frightening Judith and causing her to cry, the unbelievably loud sound of which filled the entire house.

Darrek jolted up and put her in his arms, softly swaying her back and forth as he tried to ignore the pain in his ears. Tears welled up in her eyes, and after a moment, the crying had dimmed down from filling the house to only his room.

The door flung open, and a muscly man in his forties with short, black hair and brown eyes similar to Darrek’s popped his head in, wearing a white shirt and blue boxers. “What’s wrong?” he asked as he stared towards where the noise was coming from.

Judith’s tears became a trickle and, along with the screaming, stopped as she looked towards the door. A completely different human had opened it. That was good enough for her. She hopped down from Darrek’s arms and off the bed, causing a Thud as she landed. She then proceeded to walk out the door, past a man who stared at her with bewilderment, and then back to Darrek.

“Sorry Dad… I was gonna tell you last night, but you got home later than I stayed up”, Darrek explained as he arose from his bed and walked over to his closet.

His dad let off a groan while rubbing his eyes with an arm. “How’d you even get a pokemon? I thought you were going to make your way to the laboratory in a few days and pick one from there.”

Darrek grabbed for his black athletic pants. “I was, but remember Mom’s Loudred?” His father nodded, too groggy from the rude awakening to be speculative. “Well, yesterday, an Exploud came up to me. Mom’s Exploud. She had that Whismur behind her and she was fine with me as her owner.”

His father gave a soft grin. “A pokemon’s loyalty is astounding”, he muttered to himself as he turned towards the door. “Get some clothes on and come downstairs. I’ll make breakfast for you and your new friend.” He then parted from the room.

Darrek was quick to put on his pants, his dark red, long sleeved undershirt and a black t-shirt on top of that. He placed his backpack down on his bed, along with his box of various items. He secured the pokedex and the six pokeballs into the smallest compartment on the back, and his notebook in the second largest section. He stuffed his holocaster into his right pocket, then quickly checked his wallet. 1,000 dians. He secured it into his left pocket. It wasn’t much, but it should be enough to buy some minor medical supplies for Judith if she got hurt.

He put the box back in the closet and slung the bag over his left shoulder. He walked towards the door, but stopped, looking back to grab his red bandanna of a table. He held it in his hands for a moment, becoming sentimental as he looked at his room. With a bit of luck to his journey, this would be the last time he’d see it in a long time.

Darrek parted from his room and tied the bandanna around his forehead as he made his way downstairs. His dad, now wearing gray sweatpants with his white shirt, was in the kitchen, putting some bagels in the toaster as Judith tugged at a stool near the counter. As he walked in, a loud Bang filled the room as Judith caused the stool to topple over, causing both Darrek and his dad to jump. He set it upright and placed her onto it, taking a seat on the one beside her.

“You better not let your eyes off of her”, his dad laughed from the kitchen as the two bagels popped up and he placed them on a plate.

“Yeah, she’s certainly energetic. I just hope it won’t be a problem.” His dad handed the plate to Darrek, and he started spreading pink, strawberry cream cheese on to both of them.

“Anything in particular you want for breakfast? It’ll be a while before you’ll have a home cooked meal again, so don’t hesitate on requests.”

He gave it a moment of thought before remembering what leftovers were still in the fridge. “Could you make us a spaghetti omelet”, Darrek asked as he handed Judith a bagel, who immediately tore into it, trying to devour it in a single bite but only getting half of it.

“Sure thing”, he said, walking deeper into the kitchen, making his way in and out of their sights.

Fifteen minutes passed and he presented both Darrek and Judith, albeit hers was much smaller, a plate. “Thanks Dad, looks delicious”, he exclaimed as he began eating, stopping every third bite to feed Judith some of hers.

“No problem”, his dad grinned as he pulled up another chair and sat across from both of them. “So, now that you don’t need to go to Cadence for a starter, what are your plans?”

Darrek ran a hand through his hair, uncovering his right eye as he thought about it. Judith started getting antsy when her bite didn’t show up, and he quickly cut another piece with the fork and fed it to her. “I’m not sure, actually. Where’s the closest gym?”

His dad sighed as he tried to remember the location. “Pretty sure that’s… the fighting gym in Sangproctor, where Vita’s the leader.”

“Then that’s where I’m going.”

“You sure that’s a good idea? Whismur’s don’t tend to do well against fighting pokemon.”

Darrek looked as Judith, who had managed to grab the omelet and was stuffing it in her mouth, and she looked back with a joyful gaze. He turned to his father. “I’ve just got a good feeling about it.”

He shook his head as he chuckled to himself. “I won’t stop you. Just make sure she doesn’t get badly hurt”, his dad said as he took their empty plates to the sink.

“Of course. I’ll make sure she’s fine.” He stood from the stool and, picking Judith up, made his way to the living room.

Soon after, his dad went upstairs, changed into his work clothes and came back downstairs. At that point, Darrek had taken a seat on the couch and had his holocaster on the table, trying to keep Judith sitting next to him as he planned his path to Sangproctor.

“I’m off to work”, his dad said as he stood in the living room’s doorway.

Darrek arose from the couch and walked up to him. In unison, they stuck their hands out and shook the other’s. “I’ll make you proud, Dad. I promise.”

“I’m sure you will.” He smiled a sorrowful smile. “Just stay safe as you do it.”

“I will”, he nodded, and their hands fell to their sides. They stood in silence for a moment, and even Judith knew not to interrupt it. As his dad began turning, Darrek said, “I love you.”

“I love you, too.” With that, he made his way out of the living room and left the house for work.

Darrek sat back down and stared at the map. The easy path would be to go to Vlostik Town, followed immediately by Sangproctor, itself. The problem with that was Judith and whoever else he managed to catch might be too weak to fare against the gym. It was out of his way, but if he first went to Natrio Flats, Miner’s Memorial Cave, and then Sangproctor, he’d have several friends, and undoubtedly, they’d be strong enough for the gym there.

With his path decided, the only thing left to do in this town was grab some medical supplies for the road. He stuffed the holocaster back in his bag. “Come on, Judith”, he called as he stood and made his way for the door. Judith jumped off the couch and had to speed walk to keep up with Darrek’s walking.

It took a bit, but he eventually made it to the middle of town, where all the main shopping centers were. There weren’t many people, mostly just other shoppers like himself, but there was a boy whose actions made him stick out. The blond headed boy ran down the street, just ahead of him. He then started walking and made his way under a shaded area.

Darrek didn’t pay too much attention to him and just made his way into a pokemon store. He scanned the first row of items, which was the more basic stuff, things a beginner like him would gravitate towards. With 1,000 dians, he couldn’t buy much. He hoped what he could but would be enough. He grabbed three potions, two antidotes in case he encountered a poisonous pokemon, and a parlyz heal on the off chance that happened.

As Darrek placed the items on the counter and started paying for them, Judith grew bored and walked past a woman coming into the store, making her way outside. She looked both ways down the street, trying to find something that caught her eye. She was in luck, and Darrek apparently had none. Down the street, there was a Fennekin walking close to a human. She sprinted down the street towards the two, and once she neared them both, she would try to grab hold of that fluffy, yellow tail with orange on the end of it.

Lucio stared at his map, walking down the sidewalk. Looking up from it now, he had no idea if he was going the right way. As long as he had lived here, he felt like he should know his way around. He stopped, pausing next to a small corner store. He might need to find a more notable place and start from there, or at least find the street he was on now.

“FEN!” Willow shrieked, causing Lucio to jump, and look back to his pokemon.

“W-willow, are you oka-...” He stopped, watching as a small, pink pokemon seemed to be attacking Willow’s tail.

“Waaaghh”, Judith went as she smiled and let go of the tail. She walked up to Willow’s side and started petting at her soft fur.

Willow obviously seemed enraged, flames coaxed from her ears now. The heated fox nudged Judith away and began to lick at the ruffled area of her tail, seeming rather annoyed to be anything but groomed.

Judith took a step back but didn’t let a little nudge deter her. She continued petting at her fur, moving her hand back back and forth, continuously messing her hair up and straightening it.

Lucio giggled a bit and reached into his bag, pulling it off and digging around while the Whismur tried to play with a noncompliant Willow.

He found his pokedex, and turned it on, moving to scan the two pokemon.

“Whismur, the Whisper Pokemon. Normally very quiet, its cries can equal a jet plane in volume. It inhales through its ear canals. Because of this system, it can cry continually without having to catch its breath.”

It also listed a lot of basic information, habitat, food preferences and the like.

Lucio blinked a bit, wondering if it was wild. There was no way a little pokemon like this would just run around wildly in town, but Lucio decided to check for himself. Digging around a bit more, he produced a pokeball and gave a light toss toward the Whismur.

The pokeball hit Judith on the back of her head and bounced off, hitting the ground and rolling a few inches away. She turned away from Willow and turned to Lucio, giving him a questioning gaze as she rubbed the spot she got hit.

Lucio scratched his chin, retrieving the pokeball and bagging it once again. “Well, at least now we know you belong to someone.” He said, kneeling down next to the two. He set a hand on her head carefully, while Willow scowled, glaring back at the Whismur.

Darrek, who was still inside, was assorting the few items he was able to buy into his bag.

“Hey, didn’t you come in here with a round, pink pokemon”, the teenage girl behind the counter boredly asked.

His eyes grew wide and he paced back and forth down the different aisles, trying to see if she was getting into something. Nothing. He knew she had been suspiciously quiet. “Crap”, he exclaimed as he slung the backpack over his shoulder and made his way outside. “Judith”, he called as he looked both ways, trying to find where she had gone.

Judith spun around towards Darrek’s voice and let out a quick yet loud cry, catching his attention.

Lucio gasped, clutching his ears as the pokemon cried out. Being that close, it was a real pain. Willow cried out again, before rearing up, flames building in her ears once more. She was in a really bad mood already, and the Whismur was just making it worse.

Darrek rushed over towards her and swooped her up into his arms. “Sorry about that. I take my eyes off her for one minute and she finds someone else to bother.”

Lucio stood up, his ears ringing. Looking up, he found someone much taller than himself. He looked a bit older, but it couldn’t have been by much. He jumped back a bit, startled by his appearance. This must have been the Whismur’s trainer.

“Y-yea. No problem…” He mumbled, forcing his feet to keep planted on the spot. Willow, however walked up to him and began to… Rant? It was mostly a bunch of barks and yips. She didn’t seem happy in the slightest. Flames were growing in her ears, making the hot, summer area around them even worse.

Darrek took a few steps back from Willow and gave a nervous chuckle, struggling against Judith, who just wanted to jump down. “Your, uh… Fennekin, right? She doesn’t seem too happy. What did Judith do?”

Lucio bit back his tongue, and began tapping his foot nervously. Willow stopped her barking, and turned back the heat, looking to her trainer to settle this for her. She turned back and sat next to Lucio, licking at her side as well as her tail, smoothing the fur out once again.

“Well… Umm. You see, i-it’s just that…” He sighed and thought over his words carefully, pausing himself to make sure he was talking clearly and properly. “Your Whismur came up and began trying to play and pet Willow, my Fennekin. She uh… She didn’t like that. I’m sorry, I just got her today, I was just heading out of here… I guess I caused you some trouble, huh?” He said, finally letting his breath go in a sigh.

He turned Judith around in his hands so that she was facing him, shaking her softly and playfully. “Are you giving strangers grief?” He tossed her up into the air twice, and she gave a huge smile as he did it, before turning her around again and trying to keep her still in his arms. “You didn’t cause me any trouble at all. I’m just glad neither of them hurt each other.”

Gulping a bit, Lucio took in a deep breath and let it out once more. “Heh, yea. Again, I am sorry about that, but uhh. You have a good day then. Willow?” He called to his pokemon, who looked back between her trainer and Darrek and his Whismur.

“Fen!” She barked, standing up and stretching out, before standing between the two trainers, seeming ready to fight.

Darrek let out a quick chuckle. “Looks like your Willow wants to get back at my Judith.”

Lucio knelt down behind Willow, looking her over as waves of heat flared up around her ears. He had an idea. He needed to break from his shell? How about an icebreaker…

“Heh, yea… I guess so. She must be a real…” He paused, looking up, the hint of a laugh in his eyes. “Hot head.” He finished the pun, hardly holding himself back with giggles.

“Yeah, I feel you. Judith can be a real loudmouth at times.” He scanned the area around them. “You up for it, then?”

Lucio blinked back at Willow, and gave a small nod, standing up again. “I think so. This is our first battle, so… Well, let’s just see how this goes, right Willow?” He asked, still laughing a bit in the back of his mind.

Willow gave a small huff, and flared her ears once more, another wave of heat flaring up around them.

“Hey, it’s my first battle, too. Are you just starting out, as well?” He began walking towards the shaded and secluded area Lucio was at earlier.

Lucio nodded, following him to the shade. A rather large area, making up about a quarter of the shopping center around them, placed right in the middle of it all with a large oak tree branching out and causing the shade.

“Before we start, I don’t think I caught your name. I’m Darrek.”

Lucio nodded back. “Well. I’m Lucio, Lucio Vilkin. It’s nice to meet you.” He said, a small smile growing on his face.

Darrek had a continuous grin for his expression. “Nice to meet you as well, Lucio.” He set Judith on the grass and took a few steps back. “Ready?”

Lucio nodded back. “Let’s do it.” He replied, looking back to Willow. He looked back up and pointed out at Judith. “Okay then. Willow, let’s start out with a Scratch!” He commanded.

Willow barked back, and ran off, taking a leap at Judith, and rearing her front claws down onto the little pink rabbit, ready to rake her claws down its side.

“Meet it with a pound”, Darrek exclaimed while Willow was in mid air, leaping towards Judith. The claws scratched at her side. Judith let out a shriek, but with her now so close, it would be hard for Willow to dodge the incoming pound aimed at her stomach.

Willow’s eyes went wide, and she was flung backwards, landing a bit back, wind knocked out of her. She stood on shaky legs once more. “F-Fen…”

“Are you alright there Willow?” Lucio asked, biting his lip. “Alright, you’re okay. Well, keep a distance, try an Ember.” He said, giving her another nod.

Willow grinned. Her ears flared up even hotter than before, flames roaring as her mouth flared to life and fired off a few small fireballs heading straight at the landing Judith.

“Jump to the right”, Darrek yelled towards Judith. She missed the first small fireball completely, but another grazed her side where she got scratched. She grimaced as the final one hit her in the face, and she yelped in pain, patting her face to extinguish the flames quickly. “If they’re keeping their distance, make ‘em pay for it! Scream your heart out with echoed voice”, he once again exclaimed as he threw his hands around his ears.

Judith angrily stomped on the ground, eyes set on Willow and nothing else. She began yelling with furocity, a noise that would fill the ears of anyone who was unfortunate enough to be in the shopping center. After a moment, the noise would end and Darrek would let down his hands again.

Lucio’s eyes widened, and he braced himself, holding his own ears with his hand. Trying to think, he took his ears away, as both he and Willow were bombarded by the noise. He bit down on his tongue trying to think. His eyes widened, as his ears rung in his mind. “WILLOW!” He cried out, loud as he could. “FLARE UP YOUR EARS!”

Willow shook in pain, her ears ringing. She held her breath and suddenly a roaring flame began brewing in her ears, heating up the area. Lucio pulled his hands away, a small bit of blood trickling on his hand.
“Okay Willow. Let’s try that again. Ember once more, keep those ears on fire!” Lucio called, swallowing a bit, wondering how well this was about to go. It didn’t seem like she could take much more of a beating.

Willow’s flame reared up again, and flames crawled from her mouth, before being shot out in a small cone at Judith once again.

At this point, Judith was sprinting towards Willow. “Roll out of the way”, Darrek called. She did as he said, rolling to the left and missing the brunt of the fire, but her right arm still got singed with flames, causing her to flinch. She got on her feet again and continued running towards Willow. “Pound!” Judith jumped up into the air, coming down at Willow as she tried to punch her on the head.

Seeing Judith coming down on Willow, Lucio’s mind raced, before he grinned. “Willow! Pull your ears in!” He called, wiping his hand on his jeans.

Willow looked up, and turned her ears inward, right as she was hit, right on the head. The flames roared for a moment, before flaring up bright and immediately going out as Willow fell over.

“F-fenn…” She mumbled, trying to get up, continuously falling over, dizzy and weak now.

Judith was patting herself down, trying to get the flames off of her. She plopped over and started rolling around a bunch.

Darrek walked up to Lucio and offered a hand. “Good match, man.”

Lucio bit his lip and nodded. “Heh, yea. Thank you.” He said, looking up to him and reaching out, taking his hand and shaking it. “You did really well.”

He stopped for a moment and went to pick up Willow. He scooped the little fox up, and held the fox, now sleeping easily in his arms. “Oh… Umm. Darrek, right?” He said, walking back to him. With one hand he searched around in his pocket, producing his wallet.

“Again, great match. It was fun while it lasted.” He replied, holding out a bill. *dian* 100.

Darrek just shook his head. “Keep it. I wouldn’t feel right taking that.” He walked over to Judith and picked her up, and for once, she wasn’t restless in his arms. “We should probably get these two down to the pokemon center.”

Lucio nodded again. Looking back to WIllow, she was fast asleep now, but she was pretty beaten up. “Right… Wow…” He mumbled, looking between their pokemon. He had always kinda known it, but now, seeing it for real, even weaker pokemon like theirs could do real damage to people and each other…

Darrek was careful when carrying Judith. She had several burn marks, and touching them would make her groan in pain. “There should be one nearby. I think it’s on the next street over or something like that”, he informed Lucio as he started walking.

Lucio didn’t say anything, but kept walking behind Darrek. He watched his little fox, resting in his arms. Lucio gave a low sigh, wondering how he would get through the world like this. Pokemon could do so much, and Lucio still wasn’t sure if he was ready to deal with it. He thought for a bit, continuing to follow Darrek as he thought about his next move.

As they approached the pokemon center, Darrek laid Judith on a bench near the doors. “I’m sorry to do this to you, girl, but it’ll only be for a little bit”, he told her, rubbing her affectionately as he put his backpack down and pulled out her pokeball, returning her into it with the click of a button. He slung his bag over his shoulder again and walked through the automatic doors.

Lucio stopped, nearly bumping into Darrek, who had stopped about a yard away. “Oh… Ah, umm… Sorry.” He said, losing his train of thought and shaking his head. Lucio went back to thinking for a moment. He should ask him, but was it really a good idea? Maybe he would wait a minute…

“Sorry ‘bout what?”

“Oh… I mean… I almost ran into you, I wasn’t paying any attention.” He said, rubbing some sweat away from his brow.

“Don’t fret it, man. It’s all cool.” He walked up to the counter, approaching a short, brown haired woman with a soft smile.

“How may I help you both today?”

Lucio stood behind Darrek, Willow in his arms. “We uh… We had a.. We had a battle. Our partners… They, they need care.” He said, voice nearly cracking as he tried to speak. Lucio took Willow’s pokeball out and returned his sleeping pokemon.

“Just allow me to hold onto their pokeballs for just one moment and they’ll be up and running in just a moment.”

Darrek handed over Judith’s pokeball, and he stepped aside so Lucio could do the same.

Lucio set his pokeball in the woman’s hand as well, but was almost unwilling to give it to her. He stepped back as well and bit his lip.

The nurse smiled, “Alright, give me just a moment.” She placed the two pokeballs in a large box of a machine, pressed an assortment of buttons and took a step back. The machine made a humming noise for a few seconds, followed by a beep. She took the pokeballs out and offered them back to Darrek and Lucio. “I hope you both have a wonderful day!”

Lucio smiled, holding Willow’s pokeball again. He was happy to have her back, good as new. He sat there, looking at the pokeball again. He frowned and pocketed the ball. He should ask now...“Hey… Um, Darrek. Can I ask you something?”

He took Judith’s pokeball and placed it in his pocket. He’d let her back out in a little bit when he wouldn’t have to worry about her getting lost in a town. He turned towards Lucio. “What might that be?”

“Where are you heading? You said you were just starting out, so I kinda assume you are leaving town, right?” Lucio asked, chewing at his lip.

He walked over to a couch to the side of the room, motioning for Lucio to follow. He sat down and placed his bag down, taking out his holocaster and setting it on the table to turn it on to show the map. “I’m making my way to Sangproctor”, he told him, pointing at the city “But I’m making a bit of a detour. First I’m going to Natrio Flats, followed by Miner’s Memorial Cave so I can try to get some more friends. From there, I’ll either go to Vlostik Town if I think I need it or go to Sangproctor to challenge their gym leader.” He looked up from the map and towards Lucio. “You wanna tag along?”

Lucio smiled now. Darrek had just asked the same question Lucio was about to. “Actually, yeah. I was going to actually ask if you would want to.” He said, smiling. “I’m, I’ve never really done anything like this before. I’ve hardly even left town, so I’m not sure what I’m going to be doing, so… Well, honestly I’m kinda worried about going out by myself for a while.” He said, tapping his foot a bit as he eyed Darrek’s map.

“I haven’t really gone outside of town too much, either, so I understand where you’re coming from.” Darrek shrugged. “I’m more excited about it than anything else, though.” He turned off the holocaster and put it bag in his bag.

Lucio laughed again. “Heh, yea. I’m really excited too, but I just want to be careful. Don’t wanna have to keep turning around and going back because something happened. It would be safer with more people.”

“Yeah, the larger our group, the better it’d be.” He slung his bag over his shoulder once more and stood. “But it’s whatever. We’ll meet people as we go along, and if they wanna roll with us, we’ll let ‘em.” He started making his way towards the door.

Lucio stood up, looking in his bag. He walked outside with Darrek, looking around. “Sounds good to me… To uh… Be honest, I’m not all that social, but I do try to be, so this will be a lot of help for me, you know?” He said, a small grin forming on his face.

“Yeah, I could kinda tell, but it’s all good, man. I’m not usually that social, either.”

They both kept walking until the town stores turned to housing once again, and those houses they passed eventually stopped appearing, leaving them to roam a grassy field.
