Potential trigger Encounter rolls Pokemon Declaration Getting here all the way from Oriclair was a lucky break. He managed to hitch a ride with someone driving to Wisteur Town. From there he was able to walk safely to Kotoba City. He'd still be stuck there if it wasn't for the very helpful Pokemon Ranger Alexis, who escorted him most of the way to the bridge before turning back to Kagereta Woods. The Journey took him a little over a week. Despite all of his luck, the monumental journey left him exhausted and sore. It was worth it. Ryan stood at the end of the bridge. Maxwell drifted around him. The sun was beginning to set, causing the bridge itself to cast a brilliant shadow across the waters. The stretched umbra was a surreal masterpiece of flowing, swirling designs. The pinks and oranges of the sun disappearing into the reeds matched the faded pastel colors of the elaborate stone design. He could recognize some Luctanguisian influence in the marbling of the arches supporting the whole thing. He wondered how many other cultures could be found in the bridge. What culture brought the elegantly shaped birch wood for the fencing? Who inspired the slight, reassuring curve of the path? Ryan allowed himself a moment to take it in. It reminded him of something his mother would paint. Someday, he'd have to bring her here. The entire area smelled like fresh rain. Ryan could hear the distinct noise of croagunks calling out off in the distance in either direction, timed to the rhythm of the water rushing against the bridge. Maxwell slowly lowered himself behind Ryan's shoulder. Many of the pokemon here could swallow him whole. He could feel that Ryan wanted him to train here, but he wasn't sure he could do it. At the other end of the bridge, they could make out Diannette City. Ryan chose this place because it was so close to safety, in case something went wrong. He also liked this spot because Maxwell was likely to have an advantage over the water types found here. "It's perfect. I know you'll do fine." He reassured Maxwell. "zzzzzz" The little tynamo did his best to believe that. For once in a long time, it was Ryan pushing him to do something instead of vice versa. Maxwell trusted him as a friend, but what about as a trainer? Ryan took out a pen and a single sheet of thick printer paper from his pocket. It was deeply creased from being folded up the entire trip here. There were a list of entries, and the first one read: Step 1- Train at Reedriver bridge and try to catch a pokemon Ryan was unsure whether or not this should be listed as an actual step. His plan wasn't contingent upon it, but it would definitely make the other steps easier. color=#fff] "Promise me a single battle and I'll let you cross off the step."[/color] Maxwell loved crossing things off. "zzri!" He wriggled up and down enthusiastically. Maxwell bit the end of the pen to pick it up, wriggled in a loop, and dragged it across the paper. "Fantastic" Ryan put the things back in his pocket. Now all they just needed to actually find a wild pokemon. Ryan walked up onto the bridge for a vantage point, squinting into the sunset. He could make out a handful of water types below the surface and possibly a single movement through the weeds. All of them were too far to battle. Reedriver was supposed to have a lot more wildlife than this. It was slightly eerie. There weren't a lot of trainers here either, in fact, the only person he could see was a correctly-sized shape in the distance approaching the other end of the bridge. They looked stockily built, and were probably wearing brown clothes. If Ryan had to guess he'd say it was a hiker setting out from Diannette. "Well," he said, "then it's a game of patience." Of course, he came prepared. Out of his backpack he pulled a worn white beach towel and laid it across the cobblestone. Ryan sat down on it, leaning up against the birch fencing. He also pulled out a sandwich: synthetic ham and chedder on whole wheat. Every couple of bites, he'd hold out a piece for Maxwell. Edited by UrmmuxUnbidden, 10 Dec 2016, 08:00 AM.

Yanma had a talent for knowing what other people had. That's why she hung around Reedriver Bridge. The Bridge brought a fresh supply of human tourists and trainers, and these humans would sometimes bring food or berries. It was hard at first, but eventually she learned to spot and identify these items no matter how far away they were. See, distance was key. Even with such a marvelous ability, few pokemon had the speed to pull off what she did. After picking out a suitable mark, like say, a tourist holding a sandwich, she would rush toward the item from within the reeds. She needed a lot of space to build up momentum and get the timing right. As she passed the item at top speed, she would grab it. By the time the human even saw her, she would be back in the reeds with her appropriated goods. She was very good at what she did. "Ugh. What do you think Maxwell? If we have to leave here without a single battle I think I'll just sleep tomorrow." Right now, in fact, Yanma was stalking an oblivious picnicker holding the last bite of a sandwich. He sounded dejected, not that she cared. His little pet fish-thing nuzzled him in the shoulder. How stupid. That nuzzle would be all the distraction she needed. Ryan suddenly became aware of a loud droning noise. It was faint, but getting louder. "Wait, hold on for a " The Yanma flew through an artistic gap in the fencing, which Ryan so helpfully had his back toward. In that same movement, the Yanma reached out and plucked the sandwich from his hands. "second," Ryan finished. That was a Yanma, he realized. It would be weak to electricity. Unfortunately, by the time his train of thought mad it this far, the Yanma was already over the water past the other side of the bridge. Ryan began thinking of how to get it to come back. The Yanma clearly wanted food. "Maxwell guard the mago preserves," he shouted. Ryan vaguely remembered that fast pokemon liked sweet berries. "zzuu?" Ryan explained in a whisper, "If it comes back, it's going to hit you. As soon as it does, use thunder wave. That'll slow it down." Maxwell braced himself. This was it. He either had to trust Ryan right now or the Yanma would knock him out. Maxwell shivered. Yanma heard "Mago preserves." She was conflicted, and stopped her path there above the water. The whole point of the tactic was hit-and-run. It would defeat the purpose to go back. But still, the picnicker was alone on the bridge save a pokemon the size of her little finger, with a jar of Mago berries. This was more than opportunity. This was almost destiny. Yanma turned around and charged. Battle! Maxwell The yanma streaked forward with stunning speed. The force of her wings trailed a wake along the surface of the water. She crashed into the Tynamo. Maxwell felt the force of the tackle. It hurt, but the pain was dulled by the thrill of his first battle. As soon as the Yanma touched him, Maxwell began to emit pusles of electricity. The pulses rippled around the battlers. Yanma felt her muscles stiffen and spasm. It was occurring to her that she had been outsmarted. She didn't smell any Mago, and she didn't expect her opponent to be electric type. Ryan threw a pokeball. There was a brief instant before the pokeball converted the Yanma to energy where she faced the biggest decision she's ever made. Did she want to be captured? She had a life here, stealing from humans and hiding in reeds, but did she want this life? The pokeball hit the ground and rocked. Once. Twice. Edited by UrmmuxUnbidden, 9 Dec 2016, 09:16 AM.

The Yanma broke free. No, she realized, she didn't want to be stuck at the bridge forever, but she wasn't ready to trust this How happy is the little fish-pest? She wondered. Yanma dove at the tynamo for another attack. Maxwell took advantage of Yanma's paralysis. He was pleasantly surprised to find how good it felt to battle. To use an electric attack was an expression of joy and energy. It was better than crossing off a list. He moved before the yanma's attack and unleashed a masterpiece of sparks. The Yanma was struggling now, but she clung to a certain hope. This infernal fish-pest was apparently happy enough. She dreamed of what she could accomplish under cunning leadership. What heists could she pull with proper training? Yanma hoped that he would throw another pokeball. Ryan threw it, and the pokeball clicked on the first roll. Battle Summary The sun was starting to get low. Ryan could no longer see Diannette from the bridge. Most of the path was under shadow. Ryan sent out the yanma. He walked over to the scattered pieces of the sandwich (Yanma dropped it after thunder wave), gathered it up, and handed it to her. "Vvvwwuumm"* (sucker), she said. Although, she did appreciate the gesture. She was still paralyzed, but it was fine as long as she didn't try any fast movements. "That was a good battle. Welcome to the team." Ryan reached out to the yanma with an open hand. She stared at it until he put it back in his pocket. "zzzzz" Maxwell got the impression that the yanma would be trouble. "So, I have to call you something now. Are you male?" "Vvwwvvvwwwvvww." The droning of her wings was loud and agressive. Ryan took that as no. They went back and forth with yes and no questions for ten minutes. "Summer" "Vvwwvvvwwwvvww." Ryan was an idiot for thinking of that name and still owes her mago preserves. "Agh, fine," Ryan tensed his shoulders and balled his fists. "Summer is a terrible name, i guess? Let's try Lissie." "Vvuum." Lissie was fine. At least it was better than "Summer." "Really, Lissie then? Okay good." Ryan relaxed. He stuffed his hands back into his pockets. The newest teammate was demanding and stubborn. Step 1 might not have been nearly has helpful as he hoped. The bug/flying typing was going to offer very little additional coverage in the caves, compared to the water type he was hoping for. He quickly stopped himself from making that comparison. That wasn't fair to Lissie. Besides, that was still a while off. For now, it would be best just to go heal at Diannette. The sun was almost down by now, it was getting hard to see. Ryan returned Lissie, who finished the sandwich during the conversation, so that she wouldn't have to exert herself by flying. The group headed toward the city. Odd, Ryan noticed, that the croagunk had stopped calling. It was deathly quiet. He had expected to see the hiker by now. Ryan started walking faster. There was something going on that he didn't know. That was dangerous. As he walked, he tried to consult his holocaster for information. It was dead. "Expulsius de Ghratiin." Ryan swore in Vitulian. It was one of the few phrases he knew. It roughly translated to "Giratina's anus." He had no idea how long ago the batteries ran out. He forgot to check since Wisteur. Ryan fumbled through his backpack for his spare flashlight. It was a dinky little novelty, meant to go on a key-chain or a belt loop. Maxwell gave off a slight glow, but Ryan needed something to point at the ground. It would be easy to trip on the uneven slabs of rock. The flashlight flickered on. Edited by UrmmuxUnbidden, 10 Dec 2016, 08:09 AM.

The spotlight revealed, for a brief moment, a small figure with brown fur. It was further up, over by the base of the end of the bridge. Ryan didn't notice much more, because it scrambled into the shadows. Ryan halted. The jump scare got to him. Maxwell dove into a pocket on the backpack. After a very long couple of seconds, Ryan continued breathing. "It's okay. Whatever it was must be gone now. Let's just get to Diannette." He slowly started walking again. Arceus! The human and his friend are actually going toward it! Do they not know? The pokemon wondered. Couldn't they smell the danger? He clutched his side and tried not to cry. He couldn't risk attracting any more attention. Ryan got closer to where the figure was. There were a few crimson spots of blood on the pastel yellow stone. Maxwell peered out of the pocket of the backpack, and cried out. "Iiiiiizz" Something serious must have happened for a pokemon to bleed. It was possible, but battles rarely go that wrong. Ryan knew he should be walking. He knew he needed to get out of this area right now. Every bit of logic coursing through his mind told him to run. He didn't. Morris, his grandfather, would have stayed. He would help the injured pokemon. It was as if, for the moment, Morris reached across Nirvana and moved Ryan's soul. It could have been just a small part of his subconscious clinging to an ideal. Whatever it was, it told Ryan being a trainer meant more than having pokemon, money, or badges. This purpose, to help this wounded creature, gave him resolve. It was the kind of feeling he had before the lab shut down. "Maxwell. I need you to glow as bright as you can and sweep the area. If you see anything anywhere come right back to me." "zzzzz" Maxwell shrank back into the pocket of the backpack. "Okay, that's fine. Just stay close and keep an eye out behind me." Why won't they go away? The wild pokemon, a teddiursa, hid along the riverbank. He was getting too dizzy to keep running. The human was going to get them both killed. He watched as the human combed the area. Ryan made it off of the bridge and began shuffling through the reeds. It was only a matter of time before he found him. Ryan started started shuffling through the reeds on the Dianette side of the river. Maxwell nervously wriggled around behind him, spinning around every few seconds in order to look everywhere. The reeds sounded like wind as they rubbed up against each other. It was a soft swooshing noise. The slippery mud sucked at his shoes with every step, trying to slide him down into the churning river. The only thing holding the riverbank up was the occasional thick, winding root. As a geologist, the dynamics of the soil and erosion at this place fascinated him. It was no small wonder why people used to drown here. The teddiursa stumbled out of his hiding place in a clump of reeds. Ryan ran toward it. He caught it as it stumbled again, and carried him up from the riverbank. Ryan laid him down, out of the mud. The pokemon had a large gash across his side. It was still oozing. The fur all down his side was matted and dark red. He had lost a lot of blood, and was slipping out of consciousness. This was not a wound from a pokemon battle. A pokemon battle implies a contest of strength and aura. This wasn't a contest. Whatever did that was trying to kill. Maxwell caught up. Ryan held the wound shut and applied pressure. "Maxwell, I need as many reeds as you can carry. Please hurry. He'll die if you don't." As terrifying as it was, the tynamo complied without question. A life was at stake. As soon as he dragged reeds up to Ryan, the trainer began taking the fibers out with hand, keeping his other hand on the wound. A sharp end of one of the reeds would have to work as a needle. Maxwell helped hold things as he threaded it. Ryan was not a surgeon. He wasn't a medical professional. Biology wasn't even his field. He worked to the best of his ability, wracking his brain for the one chapter of emergency care from his basic biology course. If pokemon weren't as durable, this would have been insane. Perhaps it still was. Ryan worked on the teddiursa by the light of the tynamo. It was an ugly suture, but he was confident the pokemon would live. Edited by UrmmuxUnbidden, 10 Dec 2016, 08:31 AM.

With the emergency taken care of. Ryan had an idea. He put his dead holocaster on the ground. "Maxwell, try using spark on it." Using electric attacks on equipment was really bad for it, unless you ran the calculations. At this point though, he had other priorities than a little wear on his holocaster. He needed to know what was out there. The bridge was vacant, so it was likely some sort of emergency message was sent out. "Zzzzuuuu." Maxwell shocked the holocaster. It flickered on. RAMPAGING URSARING SPOTTED. HEADED TOWARD REEDRIVER BRIDGE. STAY AWAY, EXCEEDINGLY VIO- Ryan couldn't read it all before it died again. He got the gist. It never was a hiker that he saw earlier today. The best course of action was to run. If he could just follow the edge of the river for 15 minutes, it should get him close enough to Diannette city to ward off wild pokemon. He hated to leave the teddiursa, but there was no way he could carry him the entire way. Ryan hid him the best he could, and moved on. The run was more of a stumbling jog along the slippery bank. He'd been on his feet all day and the adrenaline was wearing off. Things went as smoothly as they could for a couple minutes, until he dropped the flashlight. It rolled down the bank, and got snagged by one of the thick supporting roots. It was frustrating, but should have been no big deal. "RRROOOAAAARRRR" The ursaring appeared out of the darkness behind Maxwell. It towered over the tynamo. There was frenzy behind it's cruel gaze. It's lips curled back in a threatening snarl. The wheels turning in Ryan's mind shifted up a few gears. He only had a moment, but time slowed down for him. Maxwell's pokemon ball was buried at the bottom of his backpack. There wasn't enough time to grab it. There was only one option. "HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" Ryan barrelled toward the ursaring just before it attacked Maxwell. The terrible claw swung upward in a fierce uppercut. There was an unpleasant crack of bone as Ryan managed to place his shoulder in front of the tynamo. The force of the blow knocked him to the top of the bank. Maxwell was panicking. He should run, or hide, or help ryan. He needed to to all of those things at once. He was going to die, he realized. He wasn't ready to die. Maxwell flitted about randomly, putting a few feet of distance between him and the berserker. Ryan's vision was blurred. He couldn't feel his arm. His shoulder felt hot and wet. Sitting up, ryan saw the Ursaring close in on the frantically darting tynamo. The Ursaring by now had been led above the dropped flashlight. Checkmate. "Maxwell! Use spark on the flashlight! Hit the batteries to blow it up!" It hurt to yell. It caused pieces of bone to move around in his shoulder. Neither Ryan or Maxwell knew if he was capable of blowing up a flashlight. It didn't matter. He needed to be. Maxwell didn't understand how it would help, but if Ryan saw something, it meant he had a chance. Maxwell flitted over to the flashlight. The ursaring was on top of him. He unloaded all of his power into that flashlight. It wasn't an expression of joy, but of frustration and despair. The flashlight burst and caught fire, throwing out chunks of the root it was caught on. The ursaring was mid-swipe when the ground gave out beneath him. With no support, the sheer weight of the massive pokemon caused a mudslide. The ursaring fell, and was pushed into the river. The pokemon thrashed at the bank, trying to grab a handhold. It's claws shredded the roots and soaked the soil, pushing the ursaring father out. The current caught him. Ursaring was powerful enough to keep his head above water, but the river carried him off. His cries of anger became more and more distant. Maxwell levitated over the mudslide. He was still hurt from the battle with Lissie, and he was still shocked and terrified. Maxwell forced himself to push all of that aside. All doubts about Ryan's ability to be a trainer seemed trivial now. He saved him, and now Maxwell had to return the favor. Ryan laid unconscious at the top of the bank. Blood was starting to leak out of several puncture wounds in his shoulder. Maxwell dragged the holocaster out of the backpack. He used spark. The machine flickered to life. Quickly, Maxwell tried to push the buttons with his face, but it died too quickly. He used spark, and tried again faster. "9" Maxwell had to go faster. "9-1" Maxwell summoned all of the care he felt for Ryan. He used all of the joy of being his friend, all of the frustration the ursaring caused, and all of the hope that Ryan would live. Maxwell used spark. The tops of leaves around the holocaster singed. The screen cracked. "9-1-1" "This is the Diannette emergency responce force. Please stay on the line while we dispatch a unit to your location. What is your situ" The holocaster died, but it was enough. Maxwell stayed with Ryan until the paramedics arrived, and rode with him to the hospital. OOC notes, reasons for edits
