heya folks, i'm dillydally just a bunch of carbon hydrogen bonds slapping about on a key bored. i've been into pokemon since... well... since i can remember, but rp is a little newer to me. i've had friends who loved rp but a lot of them have either grown out of it or have been lost to the sands of adult hood, so i figured if i want to try it the only thing to do is get out there and try! however it's looking a bit more daunting than i realized... no one has to answer the next few questions, i would be happy with a little hello, so what are your tips for getting started? er, besides reading the rules. whats the best way to start a thread? what are some personal rules you try to stick by? and what do you do to make such long and well written posts? what exactly are events? how does one participate? and finally any tips for getting over nerves when posting literally anything? any other tips would be great but besides that, i really just want to say hello

Welcome aboard Dillydally! I don't have a lot of forum-based rp experience myself, but I'll offer my two cents, if you don't mind. What I tend to do, anyway, is to set a certain goal for my character. That way, I just start with the first step of achieving that goal. I generally start a thread with some setting, putting down a few details here and there that you can use later, and typically setting everything up to be put in motion. Everyone writes differently, though, and the way I start writing (I do this for all my writing, not just rp threads) definitely won't help everyone. There's one rule above everything else that I stick to. I'm here to have fun writing. It doesn't matter if other people write better than me, or if I've never tried writing this kind of dialogue, or if someone really good at this is going to judge my thread, because the thread is for me (Or, if it's a tag thread, this thread is for us to just have fun together). Hopefully that helps you with the nerves problem too. Events are different from site to site. Some sites get every member involved in a big plot-changing storyline, but events here on Godai are a pretty laid-back affair. You're essentially just given a topic that you can choose to write about if you want. I'm afraid I'll just have to let more experienced members handle your other questions, but that's my fellow newbie perspective. |

Little Hello!~ Tips for getting started? Create a character you'll enjoy RPing as [feel free to be inspired by your favorite anime/movie/book character in some way and give him/her a trait or two you yourself have]. Give him/her a cool name that you will need to breathe life into and just keep at it. There will be many times when you'll be on a roll, writing posts like a machine, but there will also be times when you'll want to skip a day or two, or 27, and if anything you should try to keep yourself motivated to write despite not feeling like doing it. Also since you're just starting out there will be times when you'll feel like your posts aren't good, regardless if that's true or not, post anyway because there's only one way to get better. Also allow yourself to be motivated by other people's writing. I do all the time, and I've been RPing for a while now. - Whats the best way to start a thread? - Think of an event that you want to do. Start wherever you feel like in that timeline and write it out. You're the writer and we're the readers. You are writing someones future favorite character. Don't limit yourself to writing 5 post thread, but feel free to do that every now and then. Also! Proper grammar. - What do you do to make such long and well written posts? - I eat pizza and get hugs. Also I just start writing and let the posts write themselves. When you, after a while, figure and feel a character out the posts really write themselves because there will be events to which your character will react and that's all threads are in way. Also a little personal tip from me would be to write your first thread yourself, get a bit of a feel for this place. Then try to seek out an RP buddy to write with. Trust me, IT'S WAAAAAY MORE FUN RPing WITH A FRIEND!!!! |

Heya Dilly! As a reminder, you still have some edits to your character. Since it's been a while you can find him back in "Incomplete Characters"! Basically it's everything everyone said up there! However, to speak for myself it would be the following: 1) There's no really one "best" way to start a thread other than to do whatever your heart desires (as long as it pertains to the rules, but even then we're fairly freeform. If anything the main genre here would be "slice of life")! What /I/ do is choose a character theme that I want said character to have. For example, my main character's theme is "Forgiveness & Blame" whereas my other character centralizes on "Independence & Change". Then, I make a small outline of his significant plot points are, but leave some flexibility for Encounters that Mods throw at me. 2) Personal rules I tend to stick by is when I obtain criticism, I don't take it personally and I especially don't take it as an attack upon my writing or me as a person. I take it all with a grain of salt, and work hard to overcome those potential weaknesses. Another personal rule of mine is always strive to better yourself, to experiment, adapt and change your style until you find one that works for you! 3) I'm far from writing "well-written posts", but I'd like to think I have /some/ kind of organization. So in short, it's organization - OUTLINES - that really play a keyrole in making my threads. Granted I without a doubt do go away from it, but it's a good physical evidence that I can have something to come back to even if I accidentally stray off course for a bit. But all in all, for each thread, my goal is to make sure the topic has a point and some form of impact for the character whether it's big or small - a development, if you will that drives the story forward. Other than that, really you should be here to have fun since that's what we're all (hopefully xD) having! Write what you want in whatever shape, form, and style you wish! We're just here to give suggestions and some tips that can make your already great writing better. After all, everyone has potential no matter what. ♥ |

This is all a lot of help, and I'll definetly keep it in mind going forward! and thank you for reminding me bones! I made that character before I had a big storm of life stuff, I kinda forgot about them, or worried they would be lost to the sands of time, but I still really want to play them so I'll be sure to check back on that character. As for all the tips, everything helps! I think I'll definetly have to look over my character and revamp it with everyone's advice in mind, especially the goal setting part! |
