Pokemon Declaration Just as the name suggested, Skytouch Forest was filled with trees that stretched up higher than any other you may ever encounter in your entire life. Having grown up nearby, Riley came to find the trees to be a normal part of his day, although now was different. Before, he was merely a kid looking to play around and have a little fun. Now he was a Pokemon trainer, and being next to these trees reminded him how he had a lot of growing to do as a person. As they cast enormous shadows upon the ground next to him, he was a mere blip on the grand scheme of things, leaving barely any kind of impression. It would be a very long time before that could change. "Come on Glade, I thought that you had figured out to use headbutt. Why haven't you been able to use it yet when you're actually fighting something?" He could feel his frustration rising. "You might have learned a new attack, but that won't get you far here either! We're in a forest, filled with bugs, plants, and birds. None of them are going to think your razor leaf is much more than a tickle." The Chikorita gave a soft cry and moved forward with his head down, bumping it against his trainer's leg softly. Sighing, Riley closed his eyes and rubbed at his temples, knowing that it wouldn't help to yell. As had been proven already, that certainly didn't make Glade jump right to the task. But he wasn't sure what more he could do. Maybe he could put off the training for headbutt until he found somebody else that was better with this kind of thing. He just wasn't sure how he was supposed to be a great trainer if he couldn't even teach his Pokemon this simple move. "It's fine, let's just get moving. We already spent one night in this forest, I don't want to make it another. And besides, we can't be too far from the edge of it by now. Scurarte will be a good place to stop and get some rest." He gave Glade a pat on his head. "Not really sure what there is for us to do there right now, but we'll see." -------------------- Judging by the way the light was coming through the trees, at an angle much different than hours ago, it had to have been well into afternoon by this point. He really did want to get out of Skytouch Forest and make his way into Scurarte for some rest. But of course not everything could be that simple, now could it? "Arceus damn it all! Not my cheri tree too!" Raising an eyebrow, Riley looked toward where the voice had come from, noticing a woman standing at a tree and searching through its branches. He looked down at Glade who also peered at the woman oddly, no doubt also wondering what exactly her issue was. And even as the voice inside of the trainer was telling him to just keep walking and forget about her, his heart didn't allow him to dismiss whatever was going on. "Hey there, is something wrong?" he called out, wandering off the path he was on to make his way to the woman. She turned toward him, showing a weathered face, crossed with wrinkles and spotted with freckles. Her eyes were a smoky grey, and the eyelids drooped, her age coming across with that exhausted look. "Yes, those damn creatures are ruining everything I grow in this forest! This here is my cheri tree that I've had for months now, kept carefully watered and weeded. And now it's just destroyed! Do you see all of these holes in the bark?" Her finger jabbed at different points along a branch of the tree. "I can see that you're a Pokemon trainer, so I won't waste my breath, but they are horrible creatures! Just horrid!" Glade gave a rather affronted look with a squeak as Riley glared. "I'm sorry that your tree is in such bad shape, but that doesn't give you a right to attack Pokemon like that. Besides, this is their home. Not your garden! So you can't really expect them to leave something alone just because you've planted it here." She gave a bark of laughter. "That's exactly what I mean! You just can't see how this is wrong. Because you're one of the trainers that thinks Pokemon can do no wrong. Let me tell you though, that's the way of thinking that makes them do these sorts of things! And it's ironic, because if anybody was to understand that they are smart enough to know better than to attack something somebody else has worked hard to grow it would be you lot!" Riley snorted and turned away from her, gently nudging Glade to continue moving on past her. As they moved away he could hear her muttering something about ungrateful children being blinded by monsters. His lips pulled together into a tight line, his face flushing red. And he began to hope that whatever it was that had done that to her tree would be back to finish the damned thing off soon. Mere seconds after he had begun walking, Riley started to notice something rather alarming. A lot of the foliage was looking rather dead. Glade had even caught on to this fact, scooting sideways to practically hug his trainer's leg. Stopping at an especially nasty looking bush, he ran a hand through the twigs, a couple of which broke in a wake of dust. Squinting and moving his face all the closer, he saw the holes that riddled the entire plant, and his stomach twisted. Whatever had eaten at that woman's tree was apparently doing the same to just about everything in this part of the forest. It was no doubt living right around here, and it wouldn't take much longer before this entire part was just... gone. "How long has this been going on? The devastation here I mean. Clearly something is happening to more than just a couple of your plants." The woman looked at Riley, surprised to see that he had made his way back. She gave him a once over as if sizing him up, maybe trying to decide if he was really trustworthy enough to consider an ally. Not that it was up for debate at the moment, given the status of the situation at hand. "Not too long. A few days really, just a few more plants after each night. But at the rate it's going..." "We could be looking at a seriously hurt forest within a few weeks. This isn't good, whatever is going on." He thought for a moment. "You said after each night. Whatever this thing is, it's eating through stuff during the night, but not the day. I might be down to camp out here and wait for whatever it is. If you'll let me and Glade rest where you live. I'm assuming you're not far from the forest." The woman nodded, introducing herself as Nadiya and promising to make his time well spent. She led him out of the thick trees of the forest, which didn't take but fifteen minutes. And then it was a very quick jaunt to her house, revealing that she did, in fact, live right outside of it. And also, unsurprising, she had a garden outside, though it had clearly been ravaged as well. Whatever was doing this had probably started there and then made its way into the forest, making Riley concerned. "Here, I think you'll like my soup. Made it with my own vegetables, though I don't think I'll have my own ingredients after a couple more months. I've lost so much of my crop." "I'm really sorry to hear that. Hopefully we'll be able to help a little bit at least. Glade and I can sleep for a while, and then make our way back where it looks like whatever it is is having its next feast." Glade looked up from his own small bowl and gave a nod along with a squeak. "I really hope so." |
