"Ah!"

Ivory turned her head as far as she could to face the avian that had taken position on top of Ivory’s backpack, only managing to get Kule in her peripherals. Kule himself stared back at Ivory, his entire head facing the opposite direction of his body. The bird had gotten tired of riding on his trainer’s backpack and had elected that the best way to tell its trainer was by giving a quick tug on one of Ivory’s hairs. Slowly and carefully, Ivory slid her back pack off and placed it gently on the ground. Bending her knees, Ivory ran a bent finger through the brown feathers just above Kule’s bowtie leaves, "you getting bored already? Its only our second day, I'm sure something interesting will happen soon." Kule didn’t say anything in response, instead he stretched his wings to reveal the leaves he kept hidden within. Without warning, Kule sprang into the air and gave his wings a good few flaps.

It had been a full two hours since Ivory had departed from her camp of the previous night, the orange sun attacked the newbie trainer’s eyes through the now thick cluster of trees and imprinted in her eyes as she stared the barren dirt road. Ivory checked her holocaster quickly for the time, Seven-thirty-four in the morning.

With newly gained altitude, Kule could see above the treetops that had previously obscured his surroundings. Ahead on the trail Ivory followed was a place that Kule could never forget, Skytouch Forest-or as he knew it-his home. The trees stood like goliaths among the surrounding forest and using his avian eyes he could see movement in the branches of the trees. After circling over his trainer for a few minutes, Kule began to slowly descend back onto the trail.

Ivory, who had still been waiting at her same spot, noticed Kule approaching and held her arm out for the bird to grab onto. Kule stretched out his talon and came to a stop on the pink cloth that coated Ivory’s arm. The two met eye to eye when Ivory lowered her arm, "see anything interesting?" Kule gave a quick "who-o" before sidling along Ivory’s arm and jumping back onto Ivory’s bag. The rowlet gripped the zipper’s tab in its beak, pulling the front pocket open to reveal Ivory’s stash of food. Kule quickly reached in and plucked a bag of “fruit flavored pokémon gummies” before Ivory could say anything. The bird took the pack in one of its talons, pecking at the bag in an attempt to open it.

"Kule" a tone of concern came over Ivory’s voice, "we talked about this, I can’t just keep giving you those or I’ll run out before the day’s done." Of course, Ivory had more bags of the exact same snacks hidden underneath her clothes, but if Kule knew that then Ivory would be out of the treats before she made it to the next town. Kule looked up to Ivory, his pupils shrinking as he stared up at the girl.

"Kule."

The owlet raised the bag into his beak and gently clamped down to carry the treats in his mouth.

"Just please put them back, I promise I’ll give you some at lunchtime."

Kule set the bag back in its place, watching it vanish before his sight as Ivory zipped up her bag and slipping the bags straps around her arms. Standing up, she regripped the bags shoulder straps, adjusted the bag, and resumed her previous pace.

It didn’t take long for the trees to begin growing taller and taller, the shade of the trees grew denser and denser and before she knew it, direct sunlight became a scarce commodity. The sound of pokémon cries grew more frequent, and soon the only thing familiar about the path she walked on was the beaten down dirt road. "This place is certainly different from home" Ivory remarked as she scanned her surroundings, getting a soft murmur from Kule behind her.

Ivory soon came to find that she certainly wasn’t alone, people and pokémon were all around her, whether walking past her, tending to their own business off to the side, or appearing for brief moments in the case of pokémon only to dash out of sight. While most people ignored her, when someone said hello to Ivory she would respond with a light wave or a light “hi” and a quick bob of her head. After walking for a few hours down the road, the path split into two, the part of the road that went straight continued the pattern of a dirt path covered in tire tracks that were flattened by the constant slapping of feet against it. The path that veered off to the left was marginally thinner and covered it ankle-high grass. While the original path would likely allow for two large vehicles to pass through at the same time, Ivory would be surprised if this grassy path would allow for even one average sized vehicle to drive through without getting scrapes across its sides. Seeing a few more fellow travelers walking back from the path, Ivory chose to part from the dirt road due to curiosity and began toward the natural-looking upward path.

A warm breeze blew against Ivory, invigorating her enough to walk at a slightly quicker pace. The top of the hill gave way to a downward slope that led to two boulders tilted against each other. The rocks made a crevice in between that Ivory figured was just large enough for a person to squeeze through, though with her backpack on she doubted she could personally fit. The boulder on Ivory’s right created a slope that if ascended would grant access to the second boulder if one could successfully climb up the three-foot high difference between the boulders.

Seeing how the rock seemed like a nice place to take a rest after walking for six hours, Ivory walked up the tilted rock, gently lifted her bag and a napping Kule on top of the second boulder, and pulled herself up by swinging her leg up and carefully rolled up on top.

Wild Pokemon Encounter

With a grunt, Ivory came to a standing position while brushing off the leaves that had found themselves stuck to her jacket as she glanced over the surrounding area with her newfound height.

“Who.”

Ivory looked down at a wide awake Kule, tired eyes meeting expectant ones, “ready for lunch?” Kule straightened up at a the sound of a word he had already connected to food, hopping off the bag as Ivory dragged the bag away from the rock’s edge. Kule watched with expectancy as his trainer sat down with a sigh of relief and pulled out a container full of store bought pokemon food. The lid was popped, and Kule dug in as soon as the container was set down. “Phew, I think I’m gonna be out of commision for a little while,” Ivory said as she kneaded her calves, “you don’t happen to have a teleporter hidden in your feathers, do you?” Kule looked up at his trainer, staring blankly as he lacked an actual answer. “Yeah, I didn’t think so,” Ivory replied as she scratched the top of his head.

The pokemon wiggled its head into the itch-defying hand, trying to manipulate Ivory into scratching primal points for peak satisfaction. Ivory couldn’t help but smile as she watched the pokemon, while the pokemon hadn’t even let her touch him at first, she had finally gained his trust after bribing him with enough gummy worms. Speaking of which, she did promise to give him some at lunch. Ivory retracted her hand and returned her attention to her bag.

Open bag of treats in hand, Ivory turned back to a stone cold Kule. Kule’s body expression was extremely familiar to Ivory, eyes wide, body straightened, wings open just a tad as if he’s about to take flight, it was the same as when Ivory first met him, and the same as every time he saw someone new. Ivory quickly traced Kule’s line of sight to behind her, and found herself staring at a fluffy little gray haired pokemon. The Minccino, I think that’s what its called, stared back at Ivory and Kule with a similar expression to Kule himself, body stiff, eyes open wide, head tilted just slightly.

The thought occurred briefly to Ivory that perhaps she had trespassed on top of something’s home as she raised both her hands and gently waved them like jazz hands. The Minccino stood up on its hind legs, looked at its front paws, and mimicked the gesture it saw. “Doesn’t seem hostile,” Ivory muttered, “wanna join us for lunch?” The Minccino stared blankly back at Ivory until she tossed a piece of Kule’s food towards the wild pokemon. A sniff, chew, and a swallow later and the Minccino hobbled its way over to Ivory. Ivory placed out her hand so that the Minccino could smell, and after a quick sniff received a light nibble on her fingertips. Taking that as a good sign, Ivory gestured to the bowl Kule had been dining from, following a few quick glances between the other mammals, the Minccino began grabbing the food and putting it in its mouth.

Kule continued to watch the wild pokemon as it stuffed its cheeks, continuously unmoving despite his trainer’s acceptance. Ivory poured a small pile of the worm gummies onto Kule’s side of the bowl, distracting him enough to avert his attention to his favorite treats. He still wasn’t going to just up and trust some random pokemon though.
