Oreback town was already in the distance. This time, he had found a small dirt road that seemed to head in the general direction of the town he needed to visit. Goliath was quite far away, but this road was almost a straight shot to his destination. It wasn't long before the old, dusty and rustic appearance of Oreback's buildings came into view. It was a relatively poor town, most of it's economy once revolving around a mining colony established earlier in the region's history. As he had expected, the sun was already starting to set. It was getting dark, and the sun's last spark of light was visible across the orange-lit desert to the west. But here he was, as he walked he tried to remain casual, hopefully no trainers would ambush him dutifully on the way to the Pokemon center. He had grown up here, and he knew the shady tactics trainers would often employ to start and win battles as a witness. When he was younger, there was a particularly clever trainer that had ambushed another trainer that looked battered and winded. The trainer's Pokemon were mostly injured, but he didn't want to look like a coward. It was unfortunate when the injured Pokemon were each curb stomped one by one. Veryn decided he would learn from that, it didn't matter what happened; he wouldn't be caught dead in such an unfair fight. Eventually he reached his destination. The sun was completely gone now, and the moon was already visible in the distance. He had been walking almost all day, and had only caught a single Pokemon. It was time he had some time to rest so he could get back in action and the same would go for his Pokemon. He stood in front of the brightly lit Pokemon Center, the standard service established across the region where trainers could heal their Pokemon, free of charge. Humans, on the other hand had to pay ridiculous fees and acquire more established doctors to heal injuries. The building was probably the newest, brightly lit building on the street with the exception of the equally impressive Pokemart nearby. Veryn entered the Pokemart, the sliding glass doors detecting his presence automatically and opening for him, closing behind him. Veryn walked up to the counter. The building was almost completely empty with the exception of a single man dressed in rags sitting comfortably on a bench to his left. In mere moments a short lady with slightly dark skin and a hair in a ponytail wearing a white outfit with a pink apron appeared through a door behind the counter, an Audino following closely behind. "Here to get your Pokemon healed today, sir? Alright, you know the drill. On the counter." Veryn placed the Pokeballs of Mudkip and Baltoy on the counter. The nurse took the two Pokeballs in her hands with a quick swipe and turned around, where a large machine with six round slots was waiting, eagerly awaiting usage. It had a large green monitor attached to the top of the machine which flickered to life as the nurse placed the Pokeballs of Baltoy and Mudkip into the slots. The nurse hit a button and the silhouettes of both Baltoy and Mudkip appeared in the top right and top left corners of the screen respectively. There were four other empty slots, as were there empty squares on the screen. It was obvious that it was meant to allow for the healing of six Pokemon at a time. Seconds later, the nurse handed the Pokeballs to Veryn. They were warm to the touch, due to the strange technology affecting the Pokemon within. The nurse bowed at the end of her service. "Umm, where do trainers usually sleep? I'm new to this sort of thing.. Being a trainer and all that." He asked curiously, slightly embarrassed that he would have to ask a stupid question like that. It was getting late, he needed to find a place and he didn't feel like asking his friend's aunt again. "Why sir, we have bedrooms available within the Pokemon center!" She said. Veryn raised an eyebrow for a moment. "Free? I guess i'll take a room for a night." But the nurse maintained a cheerful look on her face as she sook her head. "Nope. We are booked full tonight, you are going to have to sleep on the bench here in the lobby." She turned to see the fat pink Pokemon next to her that was wearing a nurse's hat. "Aud?" It said, curiously. "Go get a blanket and a pillow for our new guest." The nurse said. Audino gladly turned around, passing through the door behind the nurse, and after a few moments emerged with a finely folded white blanket plus a pillow carried in both of it's short, stubby arms. Veryn felt slightly disturbed by the nurse's personality. But he knew doctors in general always had something wrong with them, it was what made going to a hospital so disturbing to some. Over the counter, Veryn was handed the blanket and pillow. He had never slept outside a room, hotel room or a dormitory before, nor had he ever gone camping. This was a first to him. He picked the bench across from the fat homeless person dressed in rags. Hopefully he would maintain better prosperity than a man like that. He sat on the bench before laying down, placing the pillow before his head and throwing the blanket over himself before he curled up and closed his eyes. But something was bothering him. The homeless person was staring at him. For security, Veryn sat up and reached into his satchel and pulled out Baltoy's Pokeball. At least he would be able to sleep now, he thought as he pressed the button on the red and white capsule, summoning Baltoy for service. He placed Baltoy in such a way that it would levitate just above him as a sentry while he slept. Hopefully he wouldn't wake up robbed of all his thing when he awoke. Finally able to close his eyes without being bothered by the incessant staring being directed at him from the silent, stiff-plastered smiling homeless person he began to drift off to sleep. Many hours later he began to awaken. He was sore all over. The first thing he saw was the homeless man, still staring at him blankly with his eyes open. He sat up, rolling up the blanket as he did. All his things were still as they were, and Baltoy was motionless, levitating where he had left it just like a little robot trooper. He sorely stood up, stretching. "Alright, bub." He muttered as he walked over. "You are seriously starting to creep me out." The homeless man turned his head seemed to home in on Veryn as the distance narrowed, the man looking up. "Haaeh?" The man grumbled. "Ahh, I was asleep, what do ye want?" He said. "You should stop staring at people like that." Veryn said, but the man licked his lips before responding. "Aye, I be blind. Can't see a thing, and me eyelids won't shut. I gots me some eye-drops in exchange for all my money, but it's only a matter of time before they rot and fall out and I be wearin' uhn eye-patch o'er each eye' see'sun?" Veryn crossed his arms rather frustratedly. This man was quite creepy. "Alright." Veryn groaned with a hint of sarcasm. "But seriously, cut it out. If I come back here and you aren't wearing something over those... Nightmare inducing white orbs of... Ugh. You get the point." Veryn said before throwing his satchel over his shoulder, placing the folded blanket and the pillow on the Pokemon Center counter and leaving. The sliding glass door shut behind him, he could see that the sun was just beginning to rise. It was time for a brand new day, a brand new adventure. He set off to the northwest towards Goliath Cave once more, it was time he continued his search for strong, worthy Pokemon. |
