Jayden laid in bed, staring at the ceiling. He tried to sleep all night, but he was just laying there with his eyes closed, not drifting off into the land of sleep. He even tried counting Mareep, but nothing. Something didn't feel right. It was the feeling in his stomach, the feeling of nerves and excitement.
He could hear the cuckoo clock downstairs, chiming as the little Taillow inside the clock chirped eight times. He grumbled to himself and sat up, throwing his legs over the side of the bed. He rubbed the bags under his eyes as he walked to the bedroom door. He grabbed the handle and pulled his door open.
"Morning son!" His mother chimed from outside the door.
"Makuhitaaa!" Butch beamed from next to Jayden's mother.
Jayden screamed in surprise.
"Oh, did we scare you Jayden?"
"Just a bit."
Jayden mumbled as he inspected the tray in his mother's hands.
"We know that this is a big day for you, so Butch and I made you some breakfast in bed." Jayden's mother told Jayden as she handed him the breakfast tray. "I'll just be downstairs, come down when you're ready. I'm sure you're eager to get away."
Jayden smiled as he walked back to his bed and put the tray on his lap. Butch walked into the bedroom and jumped up onto the bed as he sat on the end.
Jayden looked up at Butch as he chewed on his toast. He picked up a slice and held it out for Butch to take. Butch didn't hesitate as he stuffed the toast in his mouth as if it was the first time he had ever eaten.
Jayden laughed as he watched Butch lick melted butter from his gloved-like hand.
"So, are you ready to leave today?" Jayden asked Butch as he finished off the last of his breakfast.
Butch nodded. Of course he was ready. He was ready the minute he was brought home as a pet.
Jayden nodded. If Butch was ready, then Jayden was ready. He stood up from his bed again and opened up his bedroom door. He stepped down the stairs and took his breakfast tray into the kitchen to wash up and put away.
Butch, as always, followed Jayden, standing at his side. Jayden washed up the plate and in the sink and dried it with a kitchen towel nearby. He passed the plate down to Butch, who then placed it into the cupboard.
"Perfect teamwork." Jayden chuckled.
Butch nodded, punching the air playfully as if they had just won a battle.
"Well," Jayden sighed. "I guess we had better go pack some stuff, eh little man?"
Butch shrugged. He didn't have anything to pack. He was a pokemon.
"Oh, yeah that's right." Jayden frowned. "I had better go pack then." Jayden skipped back through the kitchen and up the stairs again.
Jayden felt confused with himself. He hunted around his bedroom for his black satchel. Part of him was feeling excited, happy to go and see the world. Happy to become a pokemon trainer and chase down his dream of becoming a gym leader, or even greater.

But although he was excited, he was nervous. He didn’t know anything about traveling, he didn’t know anything about being alone, and he didn’t know how to cope if he got scared or homesick. He stared into space as he daydreamed.
As he stood still, thinking, he felt a sudden jab to the leg. He looked down to see Butch standing there. Jaydenshook his head and nodded. That was Butch’s way of saying ‘get yourself together Jayden!’.
Jayden came to realisation as Butch stood there, arms folded. He could feel Butch judging him, and that's not what he wanted. He wanted him to appreciate him.
Jayden blinked for a moment. He smiled and looked down at Butch. "Sorry, Butch, it's just-"
Butch didn't hesitate and jabbed at Jayden's leg again.
"Okay okay, I get it." Jayden laughed. He reached underneath his bed and found his old school satchel which he would use for holding his things.
Firstly, he ran to the bathroom and freshened up in the shower. Once he looked and smelled clean, he got dressed in his room.
"Does all this look okay?" Jayden asked Butch as he admired himself in the mirror, worrying that he would look like a weird person that he would usually see on TV or something, someone he despised.
Butch nodded and cheered.
Next, Jayden knew that he had to make sure he had everything that he needed for his trip.
As he searched through his desk drawers, he heard his bedroom door creak.
He looked over his shoulder to see his mother standing in the doorway. She looked happy as alway with her arms folded as she watched Jayden pack.
"I knew it wouldn't be long before you followed your brother and sister's footsteps into the world of pokemon training." She smiled warmly.
Jayden nodded and smiled. "I'm gonna' be as strong as them soon, too." Jayden told his mother. "Just you wait." He smirked a little half-heartedly.
Jayden's mother stepped forward and put her arm around Jayden. "I'm sure you will."
Butch skipped along and squeezed his arms around Jayden and his mother, joining in on the hug.
Jayden's mother let go and stepped back. "Well, I'll let you pack. Come down when you've done. I've got some stuff you might want to take with you."
The door closed as Jayden's mother left the room, and Butch stood on the spot hugging Jayden's legs, not even realising Jayden's mother had left the room.
Jayden closed his desk drawer, putting things he assumed he would need in his bag, like a pen, a phone, basically anything he could find in his drawers.
"That should be enough." Jayden told himself as he turned away from his desk and attempted to run downstairs to find what his mother had for him.
Butch looked on the desk and noticed Jayden's large, oversized headphones with a Voltorb logo inscribed onto the side. He stood on his tip-toes as he struggled to reach the headphones, but managed to pinch his gloved-hands together to pic them up. He skipped behind Jayden as they both walked downstairs.

Jayden and Butch skipped through the corridor, walking past the kitchen and into the living room, which, as always, was very dark for the dead-looking tree that sat in the front garden blocked any form of light from coming in through the medium-sized rectangular windows.
Jayden's father sat in an armchair in the middle of the living room. Jayden looked remarkably like his father, as did his brother, while his sister had the image of their mother. The only real difference was that Jayden's father, naturally, looked much older from the fact that he was in his early fourties, and the fact that too much extensive work in the mines had taken it out of him, nearly hospitalizing him in the process. However, Jayden's mother's love and care is all that he needed to make him better, so he said anyway.
Jayden's father's head slumped to his shoulder as he quietly dozed off. Since he was no longer working in the local mines, he often found himself staying up late, watching various Pokemon League battles on TV, hoping to spot Jayden's brother or sister battling their way against the champion.
Jayden's father was one of the reasons why Jayden felt so guilty about leaving to become a Pokemon trainer; he felt like he should be home, caring for his father, even though it was his father who told him to go and start his dream of becoming one of the strongest, if not the strongest of the Godai region.
Jayden tiptoed past his father, trying not to wake him. Butch (being somewhat naturally heavy-footed) stomped his feet along behind Jayden, carelessly tapping against the shiny wooden floor.
Jayden's father's eyes widened in a startled fashion.
"Jayden..." He mumbled, still only half awake. "I was just uh, watching the TV." He lied as he stretched out his arms.
"Sure you were, with your eyes closed." Jayden laughed as he took the headphones that Butch was still holding and let them hang around his neck.
Jayden's father pushed himself up in the armchair, getting more comfortable. "Still no sign of your brother or sister. Of course, they wouldn't tell me if they were going to be on TV or whatever. They'd want to try and surprise me." He laughed. "Maybe after today I'll start seeing you and Butch on there, though. Not to mention the other Pokemon you will probably start catching once you know what you're doing."
Jayden nodded. He hadn't thought about catching any other pokemon, after all, it had just been Jayden and Butch for the past few years, and now he had to add more pokemon to his team, which made him anxious, but also made him feel excited, because he wanted to make new friends with new pokemon, but he didn't want to feel like he was abandoning or neglecting Butch.
Butch looked up at Jayden and nodded as he smiled. He knew Jayden would have to make the team bigger, but Butch understood that it would only make him stronger.
"Has your mother given you the stuff she told you about, yet?"
Jayden shook his head. "I'll just go find her now." Jayden told his father as he left the living room.

He entered the kitchen, leaving the door open behind him as he stepped to the little round table that the family ate their meals on.
Jayden's mother turned around to Jayden as she lifted up a cup of tea to her lips. She lifted up one finger as she gestured to say 'One Second!' as she let the hot tea run over her warm, pink lips.
Once her cup was empty, she gently placed it upon the table and let out a content aaah!
"So, what was it you wanted to give me?" Jayden smiled impatiently as he played with his thumbs.
"Oh, yeah, hold on just one minute." She told Jayden as she left the room for a second.
Jayden could hear her rattling around as she looked for things that she had hidden away in boxes, bags and cupboards.
"Ahah!" Jayden's mother shouted in a surprised, successful tone as she eventually found what she was looking for.
She stepped back in to the kitchen with her hands behind her back. She looked at Jayden with a loving glint in her eyes. "Close your eyes." She told Jayden as he tried to peak around her back to see what she was holding.
Eventually, Jayden gave in and closed his eyes, and Butch placed his gloved hands over his eyes. Jayden's mother put the things she was hiding behind her back on the table.
"Open your eyes you two!" She called out.
Jayden opened his eyes and spotted the items sitting on the table. There was a new town map, a blue XTransceiver, a new journal, and a new pokedex.
"Wow, what are all these?!" Jayden asked; he already knew the answer, he just wanted to make sure they were for him.
Jayden's mum smiled warmly as she sat opposite Jayden. "I bought these for you. Your brother and sister were given them by the pokemon laboratory when they were younger, but I thought it would be nice to get 'em for you." Jayden's told Jayden as she continued to smile.
Jayden grinned like a big child as he picked up the Xtransceiver and put it in his pocket. He inspected the journal and everything else that his mother had given him, and gently placed them into his bag. He held the Pokedex in his hand and curiously pressed buttons, hoping to try and get the hang of it quickly.
"Thank you so much, mum. I was just going to go and pick these up myself, but I guess you've made it easier." Jayden smiled as he stood up from the table and hugged his mother. "Now everything'll feel a little more personal." He told his mother as he hugged her tighter.
"Two hugs in one morning, that's a world record!" Jayden's mum laughed in a muffled tone, since her face was buried in Jayden's shoulder.
Jayden let go of his mother and turned back to the table. Butch reached into the bag and took out the town map. Butch opened up the map and placed it onto the table and let out a noise to get Jayden's attention.
Jayden and Jayden's mother walked around next to Butch to look at the map.
"I think Butch is saying that you need to decide where to go first." Jayden's mother told Jayden.
Jayden hesitated for a moment. He hadn't really thought about where to go. "We'll do that when we've gone." Jayden laughed. He preferred doing stuff in the heat of the moment instead of planning ahead. It made him feel more excited, more surprised.
Jayden quietly folded up the map as he nervously thought about walking out of the door and starting his journey. He dropped the map into his bag.

Jayden nodded as he looked down at Butch. “Only if you’re ready to go?”
Butch cheered. Of course he was ready.
“Well then, in that case. I guess we’ll make our move.” Jayden told his mother.
The kitchen door squeaked as it opened up gently, and Jayden’s father stepped through.
“Well, I always expected you would follow in the footsteps of the other two.” Jayden’s father laughed. “I’m sure you’ll do good.”
Without even having to think about it, Jayden and Butch almost skipped to the front door. Butch pulled the door open, letting in a cool breeze.
Jayden held his hand up to his face to block the sun from blinding him.
“Make sure to actually give us a call now and then.” Jayden’s dad told Jayden with a loving smirk on his face.
“There’s always a nice, warm meal waiting for the two of you when you come back too!” Jayden’s mother chimed.
Jayden laughed and nodded. He told his parents that he loved them and stepped out of the front door. Butch waved and let out a noise as he jumped out of the door and closed the door behind him.
Jayden nervously played with his hair that fell in front of his eyes. He hated this nervous feeling. He walked through the front door and closed it shut behind him. Jayden was finally starting his journey with Butch, his trusty Makuhita.
"Goodbye." Jayden mumbled internally to himself, as if his parents could actually hear him from inside the house.
He walked through the streets of the town, not saying anything, just feeling numb. A minute or two passed, and Jayden stopped in his tracks.
"Wait a second," He said to himself. "Pull yourself together!"
Butch looked up at Jayden with a confused expression.
"Butch, y'know, I've just realised something."
Butch rubbed his hand on the top of his head, as if scratching it in a confused sense.
"We're free. Instead of moping around because we've gone, we should be happy. We can finally go off and do our own thing!" Jayden laughed, rubbing his hand playfully on Butch's head.
Butch nodded and let out a happy cry as he playfully punched the air.
"But now, that means we've actually got to start thinking about stuff, like where to go first."
"Makuuu." Butch shrugged, obviously he wouldn't be able to tell Jayden where to go and what to do.
Jayden shrugged. He looked down at Butch and pursed his lips slightly.
"If we're going to be like my brother and sister, we're going to need to get stronger."
Butch nodded.
"And to get stronger, as much as I trust you, we're going to need to get a bigger team. So..." Jayden muttered as he unfolded his map.
Butch stood on the tips of his feet, stretching his neck to see the map.
"We should maybe try and get to..." Jayden hummed, hovering his finger over different towns on the western part of the map.
"Makuhita Maku!" Butch cried as he poked a part of the map with his gloved-like hand.
"Huh?" Jayden mumbled as he looked at the map. "Rottshade Woods. You wanna' go there first? That's in Eastern Godai!"
Butch nodded.
"Well, I guess there are other pokemon there, and I suppose you can try and train there." Jayden paused and hesitated for a moment. "Alright then. Rottshade Woods, we're coming to get ya'." Jayden chuckled as he sprinted ahead, laughing like a big kid as Butch copied his exact laugh while running beside him.
