Trainer Profile

Character Name: Leon Edwin
Nickname: "Leo" or "Caveman"

Gender: Male
Age: 21 Years Old
Birthday: April 22nd, 179 AG

Trainer Class: Explorer, Beginning Trainer
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 250 lbs
Dialogue Color Code (#090)
Hair Color & Style:
All of Leon's features have the potential to appear sharp, slick, and clean. But unless at least half an hour is spent trying to perfect such a look, Leon's style usually renders a kind of "intellectually untidy" appearance, if you could call it as such. His hair is no exception: jet-black from his forehead back to the tip of his collar at the neck with medium sized side-burns that run just a bit too long. Uneven bangs and slivers of hair come down and cross over his forehead in opposing directions, barely touching the tips of his eyebrows. He's often brushing the resulting tangled mess away from his brow to one side or the other.
Eyes:
The only one really elegant feature of his face are Leon's eyes -- a surprising bright blue and pleasant juxtaposition from the darker tone of his skin and hair. Their large size and full lashes further contribute to an already prominent feeling of youth and grace. But like the rest of his body, Leon's expressive eyebrows are thick and rugged.
Clothing/Accessories:
Leon's fashion choices defy the customs of a putting together an outfit. Rather than focus on character, color, or quality of the clothes, Leon focuses on comfort and utility, to the point that he matches clothes that wouldn't always be considered a match.

Wearing a blue buttoned up dress shirt with red stripes and a plain undershirt below, Leon would be ready for a wedding if he only added a bowtie and dinner-jacket. Instead, however, his shirt is never tucked in and the sleeves are almost always rolled up, adding a casual element to the mix. Even more contradictory are his baggy, cargo pants and tactical-grade hiking boots, both of which have a darker shade blue and brown, respectively.

Finally, a light wind-breaker jacket in colder weather and a large satchel draped around one shoulder, hanging at his side, complete the image of a man who, in addition to having no sense of style, can feel prepared for any situation or environment...or at least, that was the idea Leon had when he set out on his journey.
General Appearance:
"Big Guy," the two words that always crop up when people talk about Leon. As if his consistently abnormal height-to-age ratio wasn't enough through the years, puberty brought Leon broad shoulders, beefy arms, and a wide frame. The extra helpings of meat and potatoes at the dinner table certainly didn't help slender down his figure, either. In fact, by the time he was 15 years old, Leon's physique and diet would have made him seem more like a caveman (hence the nickname) than a civilized human being if it wasn't for how often he combed his hair, shaved his face, and cleaned his teeth when meeting the numerous business associates his parents needed to impress.

Today, at a glance, Leon stands out easily in a crowd, but his relaxed posture, quizzical expression, and modest smile leave little room for any continued intimidation that may have come up at first. With a strong jaw and full flushed cheeks, his looks aren't half bad, either. Though large, Leon's features are all proportional to each other. Not too buff or overweight, his unique figure actually stands as a bit of an advantage when meeting new people. At the end of the day, many are pleasantly surprised to discover the gentle giant in him and are glad to have him around. Unfortunately, however, the advantage only goes so far for Leon, himself. If only he favored the social life.

Hometown:
Sharsaber Town (Main Home), Shiroshore City (Vacation Home) -- Southern Godai
Personality:
When pushed into public situations, as was often the case in his adolescence, Leon shines as the perfectly cast tall, dark, and handsome figure at the party, an attentive listener and highly appealing addition to the backdrop of any social gathering. Even as a child, he charmed guests with his maturity and bright faced grin. A good thing, too, as there always seemed to be some function, crowd of people, or random business associate of his parents making themselves at home in the Edwin penthouse in Sharsaber, following some big meeting or party. The resulting lack of privacy required Leon to endure a lifestyle he neither desired nor enjoyed. And as a growing boy in such an environment, there were bound to be some unwanted psychological effects, some of which still occasionally hinder him to this day.

In an ever-persistent search to find a corner of fresh air not swarming with people, Leon grew into his large figure rather reluctantly, uneasy at the thought of suddenly being eye-level with the very people he wanted to avoid. Consequently, Leon often finds his height uncomfortable and his bulk awkward. He keeps his arms at a side while he hunches over as the biggest item on his mind when in a crowd is to not bump into anybody, out of fear he may accidentally send them hurling down to the ground. Aware of the potentially frightening first impressions he makes, Leon often feels compelled to go out of his way and, even when passing a complete stranger, compensates for his size by smiling widely or saying "Hi," as pleasantly as possible, even though he would much prefer to avoid talking to anybody at all. In fact, Leon strives to avoid anywhere with a crowd and finds some mild discomfort if in close proximity with any herd of strangers.

Additionally, his inability to make fast decisions are a repercussion of having always had choices made for him and his parents through his childhood by corporate offices. But the most hindering of all his afflictions would be his cautious nature. Uncomfortable with anything new or uncertain, Leon had a knack for scaring himself stiff by his own thoughts and imagination. His anxiety could easily be blamed on a variety of things, from his cushy lifestyle to his inability to make decisions for himself, but it's safer to assume a combination of all possibilities. However, one incident in Boilspout town that occurred when he was 18 years old first made Leon confront his fear of new experiences. Incidentally, the situation led him to also overcome another one his hindrances. For it was here at Boilspout that Leon made the first major decision of his life.
History:
As the only child of two high society business figures (employed by Firebird Industries), Leon and his parents often found themselves forced into attending and often hosting important functions and events for work. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin impressed their bosses with their charming son, Leon, all the while hinting at how their success in family could mirror their success in business. But this thriving, happy family was more of an illusion than truth.

Though their discipline and persistence at work had made the Edwins some of the richest folk in all of Southern Godai, it had cost them precious time with their son. The real irony was that, like Leon, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin didn't enjoy the socialite lifestyle they had been given, either, but they made the best of their situation in the interest of their son. As the years went on, however, business grew for the two at such an accelerated rate, they found it hard to just see their son, let alone spend time with him. Indeed, the only time Leon could spend with his parents was when they were introducing him to all the high officials of corporate.

This didn't fully sink in, however, until one incident when, coming home as usual from an exhausting day at work, the two walked inside to find their home in the middle of a festive celebration. At first believing it to be some business function they had forgotten they were hosting, the two walked in to realize, to their shock and embarrassment, that their butler had brought the household staff together to celebrate Leon's 9th birthday, which had passed nearly a week ago without a single thing being said. Distraught and enraged at their own ignorance, the couple decided enough was enough and tried desperately, for the next few years, to find some time off in the interest of family. Mr. Edwin even invested in a vacation estate on the other side of the Southern District, in Shiroshore City, but before long, the new estate had become even more of a business hub than their penthouse back home in Sharsaber. Eventually, the attention demanded in their jobs overtook their focus on personal goals and the Edwins found themselves too swamped to do anything for themselves or their family.

This grim predicament the Edwins found themselves stuck in didn't go by unnoticed. Leon, himself, saw his parents struggling to balance their personal life with that of work, and, though disappointed when it would inevitably fail, he found comfort in the fact that they would try so hard to turn it all around. Never blaming them for the situation, Leon always saw the best in his parents. For instance, to this day, the Edwins have always made sure that when it would arrive, they could have time to wish Leon a happy birthday. As to whether or not they get the day right amidst the chaos and confusion of their schedule is another question. But to Leon, the fact that they're still trying is enough for now.

Leon's family do not follow/believe any religion (too busy), however members of his father's side are traditionally Kenjinists and his mother's heritage is based on worship of the Cardinal Deity in the North, the North Beast.

Donald Edwin, Leon's grandfather (on father's side) lost his whole family in the Great Godian Cataclysm. They were caught at their home in Sharsaber by the floods. Donald spent the 33 days of storm that came afterwards picking up the pieces and rebuilding his life as a man completely alone. That was, until he met Fey. The day they met, the storm ended. Grandpa Donald used to always tell his son Dean that the storm ended because of her, and that's why he fell in love with her. Fey passed away in 194, and Donald Edwin passed away 3 years after. Leon inherited his dark skin, hair, and burly physique from his father's side of the family, along with the skills of independence, adaptability, and capability. The Edwins were never wealthy until Dean began working, and his success is attributed to these exact skills that he's now passed on to his son. Unfortunately, Leon's sheltered, comfortable life has prevented these attributes from taking shape. Perhaps his journey around the world can bring them out.

Ryeila-Nu, Leon's grandmother (on mother's side) spent one 3-year term as a representative for the Nijuu, Godai's Unified Government. Leon's mother, Reina-Nu (now Reina Edwin) and her family come from the Village of Winterhart, home to the very traditional and historical Sokatara Tribe's past. Reina came from a culture built around tradition and containment. Cautious and skeptical of any outside-born foreigner, it was a pretty major surprise when Reina left her village to move with her fiancee Dean (that fiancee thing didn't help, either) to South Godai where she began her own career. This movement of independence and outward looking was almost unheard of in Reina's time, but the new generation of today that are just coming of age are showing more signs of the same sense of modernism and independence as Leon's mother. Ryeila-Nu, Leon's grandmother, is still alive, but she and Reina have not spoken since Reina got married. Leon has never met her, but he's inherited his light colored eyes, as well as introverted personality and intellectual mind from his their side of the family. Their light skin also helped tan his otherwise dark complexion from that of the Edwins.

Leon's experience growing up began at home where he was often entertained and educated by his parents, Wendell the butler, the other household staff members. As the years progressed, however, Leon saw less and less of his parents. Soon, school started and was fairly standard. In grades 1 - 6, Elementary school, Leon made his way through his subjects with relative ease. He wasn't the best at exams, but he was bright and eager to learn and always very polite. Math was the only truly challenging subject for him, but he made it through without any crippling difficulty.

Many people are often shocked to find out that Leon is single, being as he's so clever and intelligent and, of course, tall. True, they could all just be being obligatorily complimentary, he never found himself incredibly attractive. But either way, it's actually pretty sad just how inexperienced Leon is with relationships. And not just romantic ones, though those are a particularly alien concept to him. For one, he's never been in one, not a real one, unless you count a girl who chased after him for one whole week in 3rd Grade before moving on to someone else. On top of that, he's never kissed anyone, unless you count a kiss that happened when he was five years old. And finally, he's never connected with anyone on an intimate level, before. And not just in a romantic way. Leon's never really had a best friend, someone who thought alike or shared the same jokes and such. His only real friend was his butler, Wendell, but Wendell also acted as a mentor. He treated Leon as an adult, more than anyone else did, but not as much as an equal, at least not in the way that a peer of Leon's own age would do so.

Following the end of Elementary School, Leon could have moved on into Secondary school, but his parents decided against it, seeing as it was optional. Though they felt guilty for preventing their son from experiencing the individuality and opportunities for expression secondary school could offer, time wasn't exactly on their side with work getting more hectic, not to mention Leon didn't need an advanced education to get a career. He had a prestigious family and lots of wealth. This also meant Leon wouldn't have to go to University. With this in mind, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin began bringing Leon along to much more of their parties and events until soon, he was attending all of them, often becoming the center of attention at some. They didn't expect Leon to enter the same company or even in the same industry, but in their mind, he was already a networking pro at age 13. Even though none of them liked the crowds or parties, it seemed to them that he was already making a career for himself, and he hadn't even fully completed puberty, and that was one of the best things they could have hoped for.

Of course, all this changed completely when Leon, now 18, experienced an incident with several Growlithes in a park in Boilspout Town. He began becoming very curious about the world of pokemon. As they watched their son become so fascinated with this whole other world, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin became more anguished and upset. But not because their son was turning his back on all the important career prep and networking. It was because they were realizing that their son did have other passions and interests, ones that he could have much more effectively discovered in secondary school or in university. And yet, they'd brought him into their own life of mindless parties and events. They desperately tried to find a way to help him towards his passion, but it was easier said than done with the kind of lifestyle that they lived. It was frustrating, but they had found very early on that the more wealth they possessed, the more strict and confined their lives became.

His parents tried to help him or find others to help however they can. Even their friend and butler, Wendell, had some experience with the world of pokemon, but for a variety of reasons, nothing every worked out in the end. Leon would just have to stare off at the world from behind the scenes for his life, it seemed.

At the age of 18, Leon experienced an event that, while not physically life-changing, altered his entire perception of the world around him and the possibilities of his future. Into his teenage years, Leon had craved solitude more and more -- any chance to be alone with his thoughts. The numerous folk he met at his parents parties (which had somehow seemed to increase in number over the years) weren't exactly horrible people. Leon just found the conversations others had to be too...unproductive for his own liking.

One particular evening, while attending a ball hosted by his mother's boss at a famous spa and resort in Boilspout Town, Leon found the opportunity to sneak out for a breath of fresh air. Taking a stroll around the town's streets (empty by that time of night), Leon absent-mindedly walked into a large, dimly lit park. Sitting on a bench, staring up at the silent mass of a mountain that was the volcano, Mt. Sear, Leon savored every minute of peace and quiet he had. It wasn't long, however, before the relative calm of the night was broken by a strange mix of sounds coming from another area of the park. Startled, Leon remained seated on the bench, listening intently, not moving a muscle. As perceptive as he was tall, it didn't take Leon long to realize that what he was hearing was a pokémon battle, or rather, some person training his pokémon against a wild enemy, though it sounded like the wild pokémon wasn't putting up much of a fight.

Eventually, deciding he would have to make his move back to the party, anyway, Leon approached the sounds, cautiously sticking to the shadows. He found the scene just as the young trainer was returning his Geodude and leaving. Though his normal indignation would be to avoid conflict and keep moving, Leon was too disturbed by the sight before him, which happened to be his first major encounter with a pokémon battle of any kind, except for the few he managed to catch a glimpse of on TV. When the trainer had moved on, Leon slowly approached the beaten patch of grass where he found, as he had suspected, a wild pokémon, though what kind, he didn't have a clue. Like anyone, Leon was no stranger to pokémon, especially the urban Fearows, Meowths, and Mr. Mimes. This one, however, he had never seen before. It had orange fur and black stripes over its back with a cream colored belly and tail, though there were patches of a darker substance Leon grimly guessed to be the result of some open wounds. It would be several weeks before he discovered the creature he met to be a fire pokémon known as Growlithe.

For some time, unsure of how to react, Leon stared at the limp creature. Several minutes passed before he made a quick circle around the park to catch a glimpse of the local pokémon center on a different street. Upon his return to the injured pokémon, Leon was taken aback to see two other distraught Growlithes examining their companion. When he approached, however, the two retreated back into the bushes. Thinking quickly and, going against his cautious nature, once again, Leon apprehensively picked up the injured Growlithe and began to carry it to where he knew the local pokémon center was. As he arrived, he noticed the pokémon's two friends following him from a distance. Entering the center, he quickly gave the pokémon to the nurses and told them about the two other Growlithes outside. The nurses quickly acted and soon, all was quiet. Unsure of whether or not to go or stay, Leon decided to wait for ten minutes before heading back to the party. And for Leon, those were the most memorable ten minutes of his life.

Leon witnessed several trainers come and go, trainers who seemed much kinder and more sensible than the one Leon had found at the park. Moreover, Leon saw at least 15 different pokémon he had never seen before. He quickly realized how closed off he had been from the rest of the world. Leon knew pokémon existed. Leon knew they were everywhere and had seen many, often (though usually of the only seven or eight species around cities or the occasional pet of a businessman attending their parties). Leon knew trainers existed and had even heard about gyms and contests. Leon knew the world was right there, but not a thing about how accessible the it was to anyone who wanted a part of it.

Amazed at his own lack of knowledge, Leon made to leave the center, but not before checking in on the Growlithes, one last time. The nurse let him into the rehabilitation room where the three were being kept. While talking to the nurse about the situation and pokémon, in general (since he was still so curious), Leon hardly noticed the two Growlithes from before coming up to him. Before long, they were licking his hands affectionately, and curling up beside his leg. Even the injured one, which he quickly petted, woke up just long enough to sniff his hands and give him a quick lick before weakly returning to its rest.

As he left the center towards the party, head swimming with new information, Leon realized something about himself that he had never really even considered a possibility. He was a lonely person. His parents loved him, but they could never get a chance to talk to each other. He didn't really have any friends, rather just the children of his parents co-workers who were either too snobbish, arrogant, or superficial to be of value to a conversation, let alone a relationship. And now, Leon had discovered for the first time, that kids and adults, even people his own age, left their home and made a living from exploring the world and making friends with the pokémon creatures they met along the way. As he entered the party after being gone for nearly half-and-hour (though no one seemed to have noticed as they had just opened up the bar), Leon made the biggest decision of his life, the only one he had ever made for himself. To, one day, become a part of the pokémon world he had glimpsed so briefly that night.

In their first three years as employees of Firebird, Dean and Reina Edwin quickly rose the corporate ladder and soon found themselves with a good amount of extra income coming their way. Unsure of what to do with their newfound wealth, the Edwins looked to investing it in their son, who was only a year old at the time. Foreseeing their time spent at work may begin to infringe a bit on their time at home, they decided to look into hiring a professional who could take care of their son for an hour or two in the unlikely event that they couldn't be there, themselves.

But when they found themselves beginning to work 65 hour work weeks and being sent on business trips to foreign regions without barely a day's notice, they changed their search parameters. Fearing it may become their new normal, the Edwins needed something more personal and permanent than a babysitter.
Wendell Viathan had once been an aspiring pokemon trainer with dreams of becoming a professor of pokemon sciences. But when a natural disaster in Godai tragically took the life of his Ursaring companion of twelve years, Wendell abandoned his lifelong goals and, instead, settled down with a more domestic career. For 23 years, he worked as a butler for several wealthy families, devoting all his time to the service, trying to forget his past life. By the time he had turned 50, however, Wendell was tired of working for the rich. Whether they were famous pokemon trainers, celebrities, businessmen, or politicians, Wendell saw nothing but the same ignorance wherever he went. That is, until he was approached by the Edwins. They had a different mentality, modest and responsible. They were a family he could work for.

As Leon grew up, he and Wendell quickly developed a mutual fondness for each other. Wendell always taught Leon valuable life lessons and gave him advice when he needed it. He acted, in a way, as a second father figure when Mr. Edwin wasn't available, but he was always sure to never overstep his bounds, out of risk that the child may begin to care more for his butler than his own father. Indeed, it was Wendell who helped Leon understand how busy his parents were and become more tolerant and forgiving when they couldn't be there for them as often as he would've liked. Wendell was Leon's one bright spot in an otherwise gray, lonely childhood and he continued to be there for Leon, even after he'd grown up.

Everything changed, however, just a few days before Leon's twenty-first birthday.
Courageous, stubborn, and quick, Talon the Taillow perfectly embodies the admirable (and often difficult) personality famous in most members of his species. Never one to back down from a fight, no matter what the odds of success, Tal is an admirable combatant and a fierce rival if wronged. But the young bird possesses another trait more unique. Like the trainer who he'd one day meet, Tal always yearned to see the world, but standing alone and tiny in the face of Godai isn't always easy. And with his gutsy attitude, Tal often found himself in more trouble than most young pokemon experience in their lives.

These challenges quickly taught him how to be self-reliant and further enforced his defiant attitude. But it also made him realize just how incredibly lonely he was. For months, Tal endured the bullying attitudes and mean-spirited personas of many other wild pokemon in his journeys. Quick enough, he stopped even trying to make friends, as it had usually ended in a new injury for him. It wasn't until he was attacked by a territorial Spearow in a small park in Shiroshore did this change, when he was rescued (though he'd never admit that) by a young man named Leon Edwin.

Most people have to do a double take when they see the 6 1/2 foot behemoth walking down the street with a tiny 1 foot pokemon perched on his shoulder, but even more surprising is how disproportional their personas are to their sizes. While Leon towers over most he meets, he's often the quietest in the room if he can help it. Tal, on the other hand, would go completely unnoticed if it wasn't for his loud, dominant personality. The two seem like a complete mismatch, but ironically, the partnership couldn't be more perfect.

As they journey forward together, building up the bond between trainer and pokemon, the two work to bring out the best in each other. Leon's there to make sure Tal doesn't get himself into too much trouble because of his character, while Tal can help Leon come out of his shell, take more risks, and be more assertive.

Sure, Tal's not the Growlithe Leon had always wished to travel with since he was 18, and Leon's shoulder is certainly not where Tal saw himself standing on to see the world, but for the two of them, their bizarre partnership couldn't have been more perfect. Whatever the connection is that brought them together, the two are perfect for each other. It's anyone's guess where their partnership will take them, but they're likely to be a duo to watch.
