Sooooo I figured I'd try my hand at some cartography after Señor Johnapillar mentioned something about an update to the town map.. It sounded interesting enough ;p

Posted Image

Now, I know it's not an exact 1:1 replica of the Godai region, but it's close enough as a first draft as far as I'm concerned.. It was a quick try-out anyways..

How big is the country supposed to be, btw?

Fun fact: I keep hearing 'Pokémon Godai' in my head as 'Pokémon Go Die!!!!' O_o
(and now you shall too mwhahaha)

Anywhoo.. Any thoughts?

Cheers!

Sweet Jebus, that's pretty... I sat and stared at in for like five minutes, it's hypnotic o.o

Honestly, Thebes this is amazing and if this is what you call a draft I cannot even imagine what the final thing will look like.

Good job, just woah like... Awesome...

No amount of Surprised patricks can properly express how I feel upon viewing this...

Feel free to PM me so we can discuss some changes. Though I have to admit I almost want to just say that we should use this... but if you're up for discussing an drafting another one, then I'd be more than happy with it~

OK.. So small update..

Made the actual land/water ratio bigger. As such, there's more land, and less river. Tried to make the land 'fit' more with the current layout as well as well as represent some of the actual landmarks (volcano, the shallow water bit between south and central, the verdant path, the windy canyon in the east, the lake; not sure how to even do the mines, though, so none of that for now), so with a bit of luck, if I've done everything right, the map would just fit the clickable locations without any issues.

Added some mini-river esque thingies (tributaries? i dunno I'm a doctor, not a geologist! And I'm not even a doctor either, so yahh..)

Aaaand now I'm basically experimenting with how to represent the cities/landmarks and everything.. I've done one with simple colored dots (thought I only used it myself as placeholder of sorts, so it's not actually done - more of a proof of concept), and another one with mini-icons with the idea of making it like those tourist's maps that show important landmarks and interesting sights and whatnot, though that one's a heavy work in progress, and I honestly think I might just scrap that idea as it looks kind of... off... the only icons that work somewhat well are the city-icons :/.

Also I'm not quite sure how I'm gonna do the roads..

Also I'm not quite sure about the pillar canyon thingie.. It looks kind of weird, so I might just get rid of that or look at it some more.

Anywhoo..

Again... I'm stil having trouble finding the right way to express myself here... English is such a small language... It's something like anazement but that can be confuae with awestruck which is close but it's more proud too... I can't think of a word to properly summarize that. Kudos thebes, you broke thr Queen's English~

Anyway... I do like some of the markers. Though i should state that the sterling seaside is a landmark, not a city. That was a mistake of the previous mapmaker. While we're there, maybe we should make the northern shore if south godai more light in color to match the sand. It wouldn't go much further past the seaside though. I'm sure there could be some tree marker we could use for the forests, mines could just be a cave opening... Oh, and maybe have a river outlet through verdant so it doesn't look too much like a lake. It could break up and the. Reform, the river in my town does that with one spot and the area there is super grassy like verdant is.

I do feel a little bad asking you to change this stuff lol, you really are amazing, but i don't want to change too much if i can.

Oh I don't mind, I'm having a blast here xD plus, it really isn't that hard..

So I've tried to do something with your suggestion.. The beach has been.. well.. beachified.. I've added some sand which gradually goes over into the grassy areas, so I think that's what you meant.

I've experimented a bit with added bridges, roads and ferry routes, though the ferry routes are still somewhat.. blue and I'm still searching for the right color/effect. Also I'm not sure the roads are clear enough, but this is as clear and distinct I could make them without making them feel 'look at these roads! I've made them extra clear' so as to not break the style of the map, if you will..

I've tried to do something with your suggestion about the verdant path, but I don't really know what you were talking about with the whole river outlet splitting and reforming. I tried to do something, but with the somewhat limited amount of pixels to work with at that level while still keeping it distinct and at the same time keeping the coherent-landmass look (rather than some sort of broken-up meteor strike crater landscape) is something I had/may have some trouble with.
I mean, the most we have as far as watery landscape stuff over in my neighborhood is a ditch by the side of the bicycling road and a tiny, tiny river. O_o So honestly, I wasn't quite sure if this was even what you were talking about.. If you could find some pictures on google or wherever I may have a better idea and might finalize the map as far as the actual landscape is concerned (if needed, that is).

Then the only thing left might be in figuring out how to make the landmarks and cities more distinct and/or whether we want to work with icons, dots, or anything else to signify these.

So, anywhoo, here's a little itty bitty update:

Road has been added..

So now... Dots or icons?

I'm not sure about the icons myself. They still seem somewhat.. Big compared to the actual map, and making them any smaller will just make them a mess.

So..

Dots (see previous, just imagine the road being there ;p)

Or icons? (just experimenting with the opacity here)

(lower opacity)

Posted Image

(higher opacity)

Posted Image

Different colors? Different icons? Smaller icons? No icons, just dots? Any ideas? ;p

(edit: PS: used Maki for the symbols http://www.mapbox.com/maki/)

I'm fine either way, though if you or someone else prefers the icons I would go with Lower Opacity~

I think the icons look cool, but the lower opacity really shows how pretty the map is... Difficult decisions!
