Trainer Profile

Character Name: Valor Orling
Nickname: Val
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Trainer Class: Cool Teacher

Height: 5' 11''
Weight: 155 lbs
Hair Color & Style: Light brown. He used to keep is short and neat, but now it looks long and shaggy. His bangs are shorter, only going a little past his nose. In the back and along the sides, his hair is just long enough to brush his shoulders. He doesn't do much to style it either, he hardly even brushes it really, so it tends to look carelessly touseled
Eyes: Icy blue
Clothing/Accessories: He doesn't own much these days. Valor can usually be seen in his pair of ripped jeans, a faded shirt (or two if the weather gets cold), and a leather jacket. He has a scarf and some slightly torn gloves if the air gets a little too chill. He wears glasses and carries around a backpack with all of his belongings.
General Appearance: The best word to describe Valor's appearance would be "scruffy". Small children pass by him and point saying "Look, Mommy, a hobo!". There's nothing very impressive about him. Most people glance at him and then quickly shuffle away, worried that he'll ask them for money. Valor's face is lined and weathered. He looks almost ten years older than he really is. If someone were to take a moment and actually talk to him though, they'd see him light up. When he smiles, one can appreciate a rugged attractiveness in his face. The extra years would seem to fall away with his worry and sadness. Valor is a lean fellow, maybe even a bit gaunt. His clothes have grown looser on him lately, but there's still evidence that he was once a more powerful man. His skin has a kind of cold paleness to it that betrays his Sokataran lineage.

Hometown: Winterhart
Personality: Valor is a very laid-back and fun-loving guy. He tries not to dwell on the past or brood over injustices. If there's any kind of conflict, he usually just wants to avoid it. However, in his heart, Valor is a man of science. Not the kind of science that makes a man ask, "What makes a car run?" or "How can I solve world hunger" but the kind of science that asks, "What happens if I put X in the microwave?". Valor also loves people, though he's generally too polite to force his presence upon others. He prefers to let others make the first move.

People sometimes grow annoyed with Valor if they feel like he isn't paying attention or taking a situation seriously enough, but staying calm and detached and making somewhat inappropriate jokes are often just his way of coping with stress. While he likes people, Valor absolutely loves children. He particularly loves teaching them. The look in a child's eyes as she finally grasps a difficult concept brightens Valor's life, and he feels proud if he played any part in helping. He would do anything to protect a child.

History: Valor was born among the chilling peaks of Winterhart Village. The boy had a happy upbringing, and his best memories were of spending time with his grandfather who told him stories about his village and the great Sokataran heros. His grandfather was a very rare and special person. Rumor was that he was a pure-blooded Sokataran, and as such he commanded a great deal of respect from everyone else in the village. Valor's mother, by contrast, was seen as an outcast for running away with a foreigner. She was a rebellious and adventurous woman, but it pleased her to leave her son at home with his grandfather to have an upbringing steeped in Winterhart tradition.

Valor was happy with his grandfather though, and he learned the ancient ways and how to survive in the tough environment around them. Despite the rugged lifestyle, however, Valor was a rather bookish boy. His love was in stories, learning and teaching them. Instead of getting a pokemon, the threw himself, heart and soul into his schoolwork. As he grew up, he became a teacher. Then, it was his duty to pass on those traditions and stories to the next generation.

However, about that time Valor was going through his own rebellious phase, like his mother before him had experienced. His mind was full of questions, "What if?" What if the stories weren't true? What if they were only partially true? How would we know? What could we learn? He would have been fine if he'd only kept his questions to himself, but instead he shared his doubts with his students along with he zeal for learning and answers.

The elders weren't happy when youngsters began asking so many questions, and it wasn't hard to discover who was too blame, who set those fiery questions burning in the minds of innocent children. It wasn't long before Valor was laid-off from his job. His grandfather was too kind to kick him out of the house they shared, but the old man politely suggested that Valor should try to make it on his own.

That was all it took. Valor got his things together and moved out, even though he wasn't sure where he should go. He stayed in Winterhart for a summer, bouncing from one friend's couch to another's. He had no luck finding any other work, and the cold stares from the elders in the village seemed to constantly be urging him to leave Winterhart for good. The children still loved him though. Wherever he stayed, they would find him and visit. He would share his theories with them, even perform experiments with some of the older ones as his assistants. He of all people, was happy to listen to their troubles, their questions, their frustrations. Many of the younger villagers, those his own age that he'd grown up with, pitied him and offered him food and shelter when he needed it. Nevertheless, as the days become colder and autumn set in, Valor knew that he'd have to leave Winterhart.

Thus, Valor set off on his own. He said a brief bittersweet goodbye to the other villagers. Even the elders, who didn't approve of his teachings, still wished him good luck out in the world. His grandfather gave him a hug goodbye and a firm pat on the back saying, "May you find the answers you seek, my boy. And may they bring you peace at heart."

The world outside Winterhart was a harsher place than he anticipated though, and he didn't have a single friend to help him. Valor endured his first winter homeless in Cascadia City. He managed to make enough money helping out in the fisheries to eat every day, but he mostly slept under bridges or small makeshift shelters. There was no one to pity him or offer him a hot meal. His survival training in Winterhart was really the only thing that kept him alive.

Once winter had passed, Valor moved on, avoiding the major cities in the Northern District Center and moving East. After spending his whole life in a small secluded village and roughing it in Cascadia, Valor was honestly too frightened to venture into the opulent big cities. Oraclair Town fit him better. There was so much to learn! Granted, there wasn't as much along the lines of entry-level jobs for those without pokemon, but what was a few days without food when there was so much to experience?

Hunger pushed him further East. Valor did some hunting along the Lumina Bridge, and spent his next winter in Grengrothe Town. While Valor still felt the suspicion of strangers common to most Winterhart natives, he soon found the people of Grengrothe to be kind and generous. When he offered to work for food and shelter, one farming family happily took him in. There's a surprising amount of work that still needs to be done on a farm, even in the winter. He helped by taking care of the miltank and the mareep, cooking meals, chopping firewood, and even educating the children.

The last part was a surprise. The oldest boy in the family, Justin was struggling with reading. His parents had promised that if he could bring up his grades, they would allow him to become a pokemon trainer, and he wanted that more than anything. Once it was discovered that Valor was a former teacher, the family begged him to help. "How about this? You teach me how to read, and I'll teach you about pokemon," Justin suggested. Valor could hardly refuse a child, even if his family hadn't been keeping him fed and sheltered. Valor figured that it would at least make him more employable if he learned how to work with pokemon.

Thus, he worked ever day with the boy. Mostly he worked in building up Justin's self-confidence and working to find him material that was interesting enough that reading became enjoyable and less of a chore. Ironically, it turned out that Justin grew to love reading the old Winterhart legends that Valor would write down for the child to read (with a few of his own notes and embellishments). The two of them would discuss the tales long into the night.

By this springtime, Justin's grades were up and his family rejoiced. When Justin applied for his pokemon trainer's license, he encouraged Valor to do the same. Shortly afterward, two packages arrived in the mail, starter kits for two new trainers. "The next thing we ought to do is go down into the forest. I'll take our mareep, Little Light, and I'll teach you how to catch a pokemon," Justin said with a victorious smile. Valor readily agreed, happy to be the student for a change. Valor packed his supplies, and he and Justin both said goodbye to the rest of the boy's family. Finally, they were off to Skytouch Forest where their pokemon adventures would begin.

First of all awesome job, he feels like a living, breathing person and that will no doubt shine through in your topics. You've just made some tiny errors that should be very easy to fix up!

Generally we don't allow direct dialogue in personalities and histories, but personally it seems to flow neatly into the text; so unless another mod has any problems with it, I'm fine with it.

Just remove the (%) from special attack and defense, there's no need for them to be there.

Now this might just be me, but your image link isn't working so just try and get it fixed.

Also I don't really think you need to put that his love for children isn't creepy, it's pretty obvious he's not a creep.

Overall though, I can't wait to see what you do with him! :)

Thank you very much for the feedback. I removed the percentage signs and the note that he's not a creep. :)

The picture gave me sass though. It works on my home computer, but it's broken on my work computer. In the end, I just deleted it cause I couldn't figure it out, and I hope that's okay.
