Republican Leadership pushes Clinton Impeachment.

Republican Speaker of the House, with the support of Congressman Dick Armey, have introduced a singular article of impeachment. House Republican Leadership has pushed for an impeachment trial for President William Jefferson Clinton. The sole count of perjury, will, after being in the House Hopper for 24 hours, will be brought to the floor of the House. The debate will most certainly be an intense show of political loyalty. Will the Democratic Party stand by their president? Will the Republican Party stand behind their leadership?

The implications of Impeachment are high. Should the Republican Party succeed in convict the President, which would be a first in American History, Vice President Al Gore, who has begun to cautiously distance himself from the incumbent, would succeed to the office. Leaving the Vice Presidency open, after a contentious government divide. Should the Impeachment fail, in the house, the Republican Party will face a divided base. Though passage of an impeachment resolution in the House of Representatives, will most certainly fire up their base.

Should the Senate acquit the President, most analysts see both Party bases becoming more enthusiastic in the upcoming 2000 presidential election.

Politics Central Commissioned the following poll:

Do you support the removal of President Bill Clinton from office?
Yes - 40%
No - 49%
Not Sure/Don't Know - 11%

Republican Party holds the House

With the last few contested House Seats decided, the Republican Party has gained a net of one seat, even as the Impeachment procedures against President Bill Clinton continue to move through the House. With a motion to call being invoked, it appears that President Clinton will become the first President, since Andrew Johnson, to be impeached by the United States House of Representatives.

In several key races, the Republican Party was able to organize their base during a mid-term election. The following are the "key" races of 1998.

In California's 36th Congressional District, Congresswoman Jane Harman, having retired to seek the Governorship, is being succeeded by Democrat Janice Hahn. In a close 47.4 - 46.9 election, Hahn has defeated Republican Steven T. Kuykendall.

In Connecticut's 5th Congressional District Incumbent Jim Maloney has been defeated for re-election by Mark Neilsen, in a close 49.3 - 49.2 election. Neilsen, he is the first republican to represent the 5th Congressional District since 1997.

In Massachusetts 6th Congressional District, Congressman Peter Torkildsen has re-taken his seat in the House of Representatives, defeating Incumbent John Tierney in a close 49.4-48.6.
