After the rebellion, the player will get to name their advisors. The roles of the advisors will be:

  • Steward (manages the treasury and internal affairs, and rules in the PC's stead when he is gone)
  • Chancellor (handles foreign affairs)
  • Marshal (in charge of the military)
  • Spymaster (handles covert ops.)

Initial suggestion for predetermined advisors

The Red and Green knights should probably not have any terribly important governmental positions. Red is far too reckless and incautious (based on what I have so far) to be trusted with anything at all, really; maybe a position like "captain of the guard"? Green would actually be pretty good at managing affairs, but I have her drawn as being annoyed with having to take care of her brother all the time, and she probably wouldn't be too happy to have to take care of an entire country instead.

You could make Green marshal, even though Red is the one who actually wants it.

But what makes a little bit more sense to me is to allow the player to decide which characters to appoint to various positions. Obviously that means that the positions themselves become a little less important, but it allows a certain level of customization and allows you to program in the ability for screwups based on electing the wrong people.

Maybe for each position we give the player a choice between three characters?

Giving the player the option to choose their advisers would open up many possibilities for diversity between different playthroughs. It's an interesting concept, to say the least. We could have events happen when a certain character is in a certain position, or even more specific events where you need multiple characters in certain positions. If we wanted to add even more depth, we could make a character who was not promoted resent the protagonist for his decision.

Three choices per position may be a bit much, though, since we don't plan on having a high number of main characters. We can fix this by having we have repeats within the choices to lessen the total number of main characters that we would need to have for this idea to work. For example, The Navarre could be an option for both the Steward and Chancellor positions, and The Jeigan could be in the options for both the Steward and Marshal positions.

The possibility of letting the player decide who gets which office did occur to me, but it's a lot of work. Maybe we should make only the PC a main character and give everyone else who has some importance an equal chance?

Since we started going onto the topic of characters in The Overall Plan thread, I thought I'd bring it over here.

For the Navarre, I was thinking she would be around nineteen. I know that we're trying to make this as realistic as possible, so nineteen may seem a bit young for the driving force behind the revolution, but I still want her to have a sort of youthful, "I can do it all" attitude. Any older than that, I think she would be expected to have a much more mature personality than I want to give her.

Now, I'll go a little more in depth with her personality. As you could see from the Merchant route, she resents her banishment from the palace. As such, her motivations not only stem from a need for justice, but also of revenge. In this sense, she's somewhere in between Chaotic Neutral and Chaotic Good. Her rash attitude needs to be constantly kept in check by the protagonist.

Does anybody else have suggestions or preferences for her?

Onto the topic that was going on in this thread. I'm sorry Legatus, I didn't quite understand what you meant by your most recent suggestion. What did you mean by 'give everyone else who has some importance and equal chance'?

Most revolutionaries throughout history have been young people, so I don't see age being a problem. I personally would make "the Navarre" less rash on the outside and make her aggressive side surface only when someone or something hits the berserk button, a bit more "dere" type tsundere. In my vision, she'd have been kicked out a long time ago, so she would have despaired a bit and would have mostly calmed down. It is only after something happens in the plot that she would dig up the plans for revolution.

I meant that we'd give every major character the chance to have a roughly equal amount of lines.

Understood. It would only make my idea of The Navarre slightly different. She would still probably have the Chaotic Good alignment. Just for clarification, are you suggesting that you imagined she made plans for the revolution but put them away for a considerable amount of time. Then, when the plot progresses, she pulls them out again?

As for the major characters, I agree that it would probably be best to have them have the same amount of text. It would be awkward to have a "major" character that does not hold a position. There would be little reason for the protagonist to talk with that character. Which would make that character a minor character, I suppose.

Perhaps we can have an equal amount of positions to the amount of major characters while scraping the option for the player to choose positions? Since we plan on having a low number of major character, I don't think it will be much of a problem. We can also have important subordinate roles if the number becomes too large. This would be similar to Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn where Tanith was vice-captain of Begnion's holy guard while Sigrun held the captain position. Arguably, Tanith had more lines, too.

I didn't plan her to have any major plans, just some "I'm gonna kill this guy" type plotting.

No, after some consideration, I actually would like it if the player had the ability to choose the positions. I like giving more power to the player. Restricting who can take which role would do well enough to prevent a combinatorial explosion. Also, the characters would still be talking about mostly the same stuff, so it shouldn't be that hard to write dialogue for each one of them. Of course, certain advisors would handle certain things in certain fashions, so there would be concrete differences between the choices as well.

As for extra roles... military ones are easy to come up with.

  • Captain of the Guard (in charge of your personal force)
  • Captain of the Garrison (in charge of defending the capital)
  • Captain of the Patrol (in charge of... well, border patrols)
  • High Priest (religious affairs, naturally)

Other possibilities?

Oh, I just realized potential overlap for two characters. Remember the boisterous knight in the first draft of the noble path? His personality is kinda like that of our Red peasant 'Knight.' There's just one drastic difference here, and that is that in the beginning of the peasant route, the red knight is plotting against the tyrant. In the noble path, he would be fighting for him as a knight. Maybe, without the player character as a balancing factor, he and his sister went on separate ways. The Red Knight then enlisted in the city state's army (during a time when the tyrant was less insane,) proved himself in battle, and became a knight. Thus he never ended up suffering under the tyrant's rule and didn't get the idea to rebel against him earlier.
