Been thinking about the music portion, are we completely against using music from other games? Regardless, here are some themes and things I think we can use for certain parts of the game. Been playing Ocarina of Time so of course I'd want something like this... perhaps credits music? Or for some sort of beach/tropical/oceanic location? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4i-ybuot-o One of my favorites, something to be used during a rain scene or death. When the protagonist feels isolated or something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-Xm7s9eGxU Intense large battle music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqrCmPga46w Sons of Scotland by Mark Knopfler, one of my other favorites. Kind of reminds me of music from the Shire... perhaps to be used in a similar setting? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzoJyLdFT2I Favorite Mozart composition... Royal court meeting in an inner castle garden or something was what I had in mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7jEpsgpPLQ So yeah, this thread should probably be used to discuss any music we want to put in the game, composition, etc. Would love to compose something, but I still haven't found a suitable program that i can get for free on my laptop. Will update you all if I find anything. |

Since this is a stand-alone game and not just a small fangame, yes, we should have our own music. If this topic is just for discussion over the music for the game, it should probably be moved to the Development Forum. |

Right now, I'm using a variety of music programs that will probably help us out and they don't cost anything. It's a good thing I'm using one of my older computers since I might have forgotten about some of these. TuxGuitar: This is probably our greatest asset, believe it or not. It's an open source tablature editor that opens a variety of different music files. Normally, it is used to open up Guitar Pro and similar files without having to purchase the program. However, we can also use it to write sheet music and export it in MIDI format. We can use it as a MIDI editing software. Unfortunately, as far as I'm aware, it cannot open MIDI files. Synthesia: This program is essentially Rock Band/Guitar Hero for the piano. It takes MIDI files and plays it back with color-coded, cascading bars onto a keyboard at the bottom of the screen. I like this program because it allows us to see the relationships between instruments without having to switch between displays like in TuxGuitar. You can also mute and hide tracks and even play along with a MIDI keyboard or a computer keyboard. For our purposes, though, we'd have it on full auto. NoteWorthy Composer 2: A MIDI viewing software (unless you want to pay for it). It's a bit obsolete with the other two programs, but there are still some instances where you'd want to view MIDI files in standard musical notation while not being able to open it with TuxGuitar. I'm also using Ableton Live 8 for recording purposes, but that one costs money. It's a sequencing program, so if we have bits of a song in different MIDI files, I can combine them together into one file. It can also turn recordings and MIDI files into MP3 and other music files. There's not really a need for all of us to have this program, so we can leave the "finishing touches" up to me for the time being. |

Also, if the file is ever an issue, if you have Audacity (which is free), you can record the file while it's playing in the other program and save it in a different format such as .wav or .mp3 if need be. Maybe we could use Mario Paint Composer too, although then quality becomes an issue, but then again it depends on what kind of sound we are going for, as far as quality is concerned. Music quality should parallel graphic quality --- You wouldn't hear the soundtrack from Madden on Super Mario Land. |

Promising looking software you've got, molater. I'll have to take a look. Yes, if we have retro music, we should have retro graphics, too. However, I'm not sure if Mario Paint Composer is the optimal tool for that task... |

So just to clarify, what kind of graphics are we striving for? Somewhere like FE6-8 or more like 9-10, or a totally different style altogether. I kind of figured that, just an idea I had at time of posting, since it probably wouldn't be hard to get an emulator for that and we all could probably use it. |

Graphics has its own thread, but we're definitely going for sprite graphics and for our own style. Yeah, it's definitely easy to get and use, but it's not really suitable for serious composing. |

I've been playing Mount&Blade: Warband, and figured it had some fitting classical/medieval/renaissance-esque music which could serve as some inspiration for the game.
Though eventually we'll want our own music, we could use other music as placeholders. Edited by Legatus, Thursday 26-04-2012, 18:33.

I'm a bit short on time, but I've gone through my short collection of anime/game OST and picked out some that we could reference when making our own music. You guys can look them up if you want to, but this is just a general list that I compiled somewhat hastily. I'll sort through them at a later time. I did notice that many of them were either really upbeat or emotionally sad or happy. It seems I was not fond of the more general, neutral music from these anime/games. Spice and Wolf 01 - Shounin to Ookami to, Tabi no Nibasha 04 - Shippo Dance 05 - Yume no Manimani 08 - Tsukiyo no Tategami 10 - Hikaru Wadachi 16 - Yureru Mugi 19 - Kimi no Moto he 20 - Chiisana Tameiki 22 - Tsuyoi Kaze ga Fuite mo 23 - Tadashiki Tenbin 29 - Mada Minu Machi he Koihime Musou 03 - Every Day is a Peaceful One 04 - Princess Unrivaled in Passion 06 - The Melody Echoing Across the Azure Skies 08 - Reciprocal Love and Peace 09 - Love, Too, Is a Battleground! Go Forth Maiden! 16 - A Most Spectacular Tempest in Full Bloom 18 - Almighty Sword Dance Clannad - Disk 1 01.汐 10.資料室のお茶会 14.日々の遑 Clannad - Disk 2 07 - Shining in the Sky 09 - White Clovers 10 - Distant Years -piano- 12 - Distant Years 14 - The Place Where Wishes Come True II Clannad - Tomoyo After 07 Rivulet 09 Harmony with Sorrow Air 01 Kaisouroku 02 Nomichi 10 Densyou Toradora 01 - Startup 04 - Kotori no Etude 05 - Kaze wo Kiite 15 - Yuugure no Yakusoku 21 - Lost my pieces 24 - Sora iro no Houkago 27 - Onna no Ko no Kimochi 28 - Yasashisa no Ashioto Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu 01 俺たちはFクラス 05 ONE for ALL 06 ALL for ONE 07 いざ!試召戦争へ!! 09 観察処分者 11 気持ち良い敗戦 16 格差社会 18 王者の風格 19 立てよ!Fクラス!! 27 本気のFクラス 28 晴れやかな快勝 Edit: By the way, most of the Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu is not on Youtube, but the rest are, so go ahead and search them if you have the time. Like I said before, though, I'll probably be slimming that list down when I have the chance. Edited by molater, Friday 27-04-2012, 01:33.

Wow, that is a lot. I tried some, and some of them really seem fitting. Here's some renaissance folk music for the sake of more references. |
