January, 1110 S.A The Baron Melo di Astamari, the Baron of Astamari in Rheiloghi, a man of little renown and power had made his way to the Republic, hoping to find some assistance. He has had some trouble dealing with a nest of harpies that has plagued the hillside of his estate for sometime. His Knights too cowardice to face the harpies themselves offered coin instead of service for the task. Legally he was obligated to accept their coin which left him little options but to find folk willing for the job. His first stop was the nearby Republic, a hive of such honorless men. Minor Quest Available:Currently in Progress, Medium Risk, ƒ35 Minimum Reward Edited by umne, Apr 14 2013, 07:40 AM.

January 8th, 1110 S.A Baron Melo di Astamari, had awoken to learn that an Orc had come to see him. He was not really familiar with the folk, having rarely left Astamari but knew of their reputation. He was not surprised to the Orc was as brutish looking as he thought, but surprisingly with a bit of refinement and class as one would suspect from the gold peddlers of the Republic. Regardless of his appearance, he had learned of the Reputation of this particular orc. A mercenary captain, how suiting for his needs. He was at first a bit upset, hoping to speed the process up he had decided to announce the payment, looking at the Orc perhaps he may have done better to negotiate a lower price. Too late for that the Baron thought. "Alright Orc, I have 35 Florins for you, but first you must complete my task. A nest of harpies has grown too troublesome in the hillside. I grow grapes there, they have been eating them and injuring my small folk. I do not have money for an army, though I do not believe you need one. They can be dangerous, I do not know their number but you may wish to bring some weapons. If you still wish to come, then by all means we should depart at once." |

January 8th, 1110 S.A Magkahn was a highly simple man to the core, when it came to matters of fighting. Even though he was being deployed as nothing more than a simple exterminator, the Orc felt like it was a good chance to test out the tip of his new spear, and to make profit off of it seemed hilarious to him. Perhaps humans were just as lazy as he first surmised, or perhaps these cowards were actually afraid of naked hags with wings. He agreed, wanting to waste no time. A nobody Grunt won a drunken brawl the night before Magkahn set out, and was allowed to accompany his Condottiero to battle. This was his battle. Grumio, a former chef and house servant turned mercenary was armed with just a sword that he "found." The two followed the Baron, awaiting their chance to make some money. January 16th, 1110 S.A The Baron di Astamari was probably not entirely pleased with the selection he had gotten, but it was too little too late. For 35 Florins he was expecting a bit more than an Orc and his drunken companion, none the less this is what he had. The Price was high, but so too was his desperation these harpies were indeed a menace. Could this Orc mercenary truly handle this deadly business? Either way the journey to Astamari was as plain as any other journey through the Sydonian countryside could be. Largely flat land with small rolling hills, often growing grapes and tomatoes. They arrived in Astamari in 8 days, just about the average pace for the trip. The Barony was rather quaint, about four villages fed into the Keep of Astarmi which was rather impressive for its size. The walls were of good height and made of stone, something that was not very common among the country barons. This was an old place, but it was well kept. They were met by the family of Baron Melo, three of his children were still very young but his oldest, a Son, met the Orc poorly. He was eager to prove his worth, but was not allowed to venture into the wilderness. Magkahn and Grumio were taken their their quarters, which for the most part were likely reserved for non important guests but not for servants, at least they were given some degree of respect. Supper would be served soon, and Magkahn and Grumio were told that it would not do to go off into the hills at this time of day and to wait. They were given free roaming of the Keep. It was then obvious to Magkahn why the Knights did not raise men to challenge the Harpies. The Baron Melo was a very relaxed man, he had only given them instruction to find him when they were ready to depart so long as it was not too early, but preferably before noon. Until then, Magkahn was essentially free to do as he wished. |

Later that night... The two guests were greeted and given a place to sit during supper. The Orc, in contrast to his savage quality of character, ate like a proper refined gentleman while his lowborn companion picked at all the food with his bare hands, belched loudly, and drank too much wine. It didn't seem to bother Magkahn too much though, given the laid back nature of the lord, and the fact that the Condottiero did not care too much for the weak men of Rheiloghi, but he still had a reputation to uphold as an honorable savage of sorts. He listened in on anything of interest while conversing with the nobility, chancing that perhaps someone might say something that could be of interest to the Republic. After dinner, Grumio retired to bed early on behalf of Magkahn's urging, as he felt it better for Grumio not to be drinking all night and hung over tomorrow. This left him free to wander, and Magkahn was curious of Sydonians and their nobility. He'd only ever seen the Republic, and that represented a small sliver of Sydonian culture, and it was almost devoid of the interesting and possibly strange noble customs. After a a short time, however he grew bored and decided to pay the matron of the house a visit, if he could manage the opportunity. He rationed, to himself, it would be better to understand the nobility through speaking with them and knowing how they worked, rather than studying their marble statues and indoor gardens. Deciding, since the Baroness was of noble birth, he would need something better than your typical Sydonian backwash, and instead brought with him fine Lezan wine as, he set out to find her. January 16th-17th, 1110 S.A Magkhan's quest to find the Baroness was not as long as he may have thought. She was just leaving the chapel, and likely had just finished praying when he saw her walking through the court yard to her quarters. As he approached, the Woman looked very composed and disciplined, rather opposite from her husband, she raised her hand and an arrow came whizzing by landing the near the Orc. "You will forgive me Master Orc, in these times we must take extra precautions. I am unsure of your purpose for wandering the grounds, though you have use of them, I am certain rest would suit you better than games." The woman smiled as she nodded in the direction of the hand that held the bottle. "You will forgive me if I will have to leave you to your own devices. I have said my prayers, and now I will go to my chamber to sleep. In the morrow there is much to be done, it is not easy to run an manor. If it is a good tumbling you seek, then I suggest Matilda, she is the guard's wench and can be found near the gatehouse, a penny or two will suffice I am sure. Good night, Master Orc." The Baroness was very sharp and full of charisma, and power in her voice. It became clear that perhaps, the Baron remained in power because his wife truly ran the estate. In all of the haste he had forgotten to ask her name, but either way she was gone now and he had some choices to make. He was given some notice earlier that the Baron would be at the stables before lunch, hoping to get rid of the Harpies and celebrate by eating hearty. Breakfast would be served at his chamber. The road to the harpies was only about half an hour's ride from the Keep, some hills with a small cottage resting on top of the biggest one. The Harpies made a nest somewhere nearby there. Magkahn killed time reviewing his plans to battle the Harpies with Grumio until the time came. He was armed with a spear while Grumio simply had a sword, "Look here chap, I chose you in a tourney of brawlers for a reason. I expect the worst, and if there's going to be a whole nest of harpies, I'm expecting a lot of them. When the whole of them descend upon us, it will be like a brawl, and I want you to keep your wits about yourself. Remember, when they come to dive bomb us, they can easily lose a foot if you stick your sword up and chop at the right time." The Orc tapped Grumio's sword with the end of his spear. "Now, I am going to take these bitches out of the sky with this spear, if any of them are living when I pull them down on my spear, it will be your job to execute them. As long as they do not all jump on us, we can thin their numbers that way. When or if they do plan to jump us, you will be my guard, and the two of us will need to work together, if we're to rip them out of the sky. If they fly away, get your sling ready." "A'right boss," responded the poor man that was Grumio. The two wasted no time, however, when it came to meeting the Baron at the stables. They readied themselves to set out down the road. The thirty minutes spent traveling, Magkahn would try to talk with the Baron and learn what he could about Sydonian nobility, and hopefully to win favor with the Baron himself. Grumio did little to help, however, as the lowborn mercenary couldn't help but to make lewd jokes the whole way, and rudely laugh at people they passed, who themselves, were not on horses and did not seem to own one. In his home country he was a free man, and knew as long as he did not directly enrage a rich man, he could get away with laughing at those poorer than him there. The group came to the hills and cottage. With only a vague hint as to where the harpies were, Magkahn decided to a venture off towards the cottage and highest hill. From there he would consider the situation. While he would rather fight them on a flat ground, if he had to he would take the battle to the top of the hill, and hopefully use the slope to his advantage when he was picking them out of the sky, possibly making the fall more fatal. January 17th, 1110 S.A The road was rather unpleasant for the Baron. The peasant companion of the Orc was more than he could really bare, though he kept a pleasant ace. The Sydonian answered any of the questions the Orc had, and to Magkhans surprise, the Baron seemed more capable than he imagined. The running of an estate is far more than waging war and crushing dissidents, the Baron went on to explain, it is about ensure the livlihood of the people. The Baron seemed very much interested in ensuring his small folk were well cared for, saying it was the responsibility that the Lord Father gave to the nobility to ensure those beneath them were kept safe and allowed to live as best as their lives could afford them. The practice of scutage is not uncommon in the Sydonian realms, that is paying fees in exchange for not performing military service, and thus many mercenary bands have formed around Sydonia. The baron went on to talk about the Great Sydon Company, that resides in Kingdom of Sydonica, though their loyalty is to coin first and if the Orc Magkhan should get a chance, he may wish to visit the Grand Master Acio di Ventura to learn what he can from him. The cottage was owned by a grape grower, who was more than pleased to the Baron and his companions. The Baron smiled, and pointed towards a small thicket of trees not more than 1 hectare in size. "The harpies are inside there, good luck Master Orc." Magkhan could go into the thicket, or he could follow his original plan and let the harpies come out. Whichever was more daring, but the Baron had already decided to take a rest and began to eat cheese the owner of the cottage had laid out for him. |

Uncertain how many he faced, Magkahn decided to lure them out, slinging rocks at their nest. It would be better to fight them on his grounds rather than theirs, he figured. He would ready his spear, while Grumio readied his sword. He and his comrade stood strong and ready.
