January, 1110 S.A

The Lord Father lead them to the Republic to spread his message and turn the Godless, coin-loving folk of the city into devout followers of their Holy Church. Unfortunately their saviour neglected to inform his missionary servants of the perils that plagued the Republic countryside. Lacking a proper military to police outside city walls made for the large convoy of priests, merchants and their mercenary escort a prime target. Some claimed it was the Lord Father and faith that saved the holy men from the blade while their travelling companions fell to the orcish raiders that set upon them. The group of missionaries have pleaded in the marketplace for days in an attempt to drum up sympathy and find folks that would show their devotion and retrieve their holy 'artefacts' from the stolen convoy. They promise the riches of their fallen merchant friends in return for those whom would prove themselves before God.

The priests did not say anything when an Orcs came to champion their cause. They graciously accepted the fellow man's help as he offered it where others would have questioned Magkahn's intent when going out to battle his own race. Never the less the holy men offered brief instructions of where the Orcish raiders had hit the caravan and from which direction the group had come from. It took a few days to both reach the initial site of attack and then track down the encampment the marauders called home. Magkahn finally came upon the grouping of tents along the coastline with a series of small galleys being loaded full of the goods captured from not only the priests, but many other caravans as well. If killing the whole lot of raiders didn't require some help, hauling the loot back to the capital certainly would.

There was no visible indication of the holy artefacts the holy men had dragged here but even if they weren't here, there was plenty to justify attacking the raiders. The only question now was how Magkahn would proceed in ridding The Republic of these brigands.

Rallied off the coast...

He sniffed his flat nose. Unamused by these petty raiders and their 'civilized' ways. He recognized their warpaint and banners, these were not true northern Orcs. Magkahn drew his men close. Deciding, since they were loading up right now, he would have to make a move.

He deployed his archers to rain shot upon the brigands. While they were scattered and in chaos, Magkahn would lead the charge on foot with his rodeleros and footmen. The rodeleros would lead, as they were the elite of the Warband. As he charged, he hurled harpy skulls at the opposition, an insult in his homeland that these southerners might not even recognize. A grim sense of pride, he felt. As his troops kept together, the archers would use this time to fire at any group of men attempting to organize themselves as long as they could.

The Battle...

The hail of arrows and the battle-cry of Magkahn's forces sent the raiders into momentary disarray, look around and returning their own war-cries as many were cut down by arrows. The raiders were far out numbered by their opposition but it did not stop them from gathering as best they could and meeting the opposing force head on. Bloodthirsty and crazed the enemy fought regardless of the odds for an attempt at the greatest glory on the battlefield. Unfortunately for them even their voracity could not muster victory from such a superior force that had managed to catch them off guard. As their numbers plummeted the last few attempted to flee to their boats, only to be caught by new arrows from the watchers overlooking the battlefield. None of the others surrendered and the battle dragged on only a short time until the very last marauder fell. It was a relatively clean battle with few losses for Magkahn.

Looting the encampment was all that was left for the Villa forces and the men set about to scavenge the remains of the encampment. Unfortunately during the conflict a galley had managed to catch a flame and by the time the fire had gone out, the collection of goods on-board was thoroughly destroyed. The two remaining boats and their cargo remained fine however, Magkahn personally finding the stash of holy artefacts he had set out to retrieve. With their objective secured and the loot from countless caravans in tow, the Skullfiend Warband headed back to the city to return the holy items.

Pillaging

Knowing the shrewd holy men would pay him dog's wages for his work, and being the beast of an Orc he was, Magkahn declared the raider's property his own. The entire cache now belonged to the Skullfiend Warband, including the 2 vessels. While he had no one capable of sailing them just now, he could at least station 50 footmen to guard the ships until he could hire a crew for them.

The grunts (footmen and archers) will be working 'round the clock transporting the loot to Tana Del Lupo where it will of course properly be handled.

He was no fool, however, and knew the priests would want their toys. Though he was secretly a heathen, and did not believe in this nonsense, he had an image to protect. His plan was to offer the artifacts up to the priests and plead it off as though he did it on behalf of our lord father, and that he had slain his heathen brothers to prove it.

Upon returning to the city and the priests, Magkahn receives furious praise from the priests. "We thank you good Orc, and the Lord Father also thanks you. We will always be in your debt, but as promised you the loot from our former companions is yours friend. In addition we would like to present you with this holiest of artefacts." The lead priest rummages through the collection of goods Magkahn had returned to him before producing a golden mask, much craftsman ship had gone into making the simple metal cover look as ornate as possible without using additional materials. "This was said to be the face mask of one of the Lord Father's greatest crusaders and Saint. Our scriptures say that upon his death, his spirit became one with the mask and invokes an unnatural fear upon your enemies in combat." The holy man carefully offered the item to Magkahn before bowing, thanking him once more and moving back to the city's cathedral.

Meanwhile back at the raider's camp, further investigation had revealed less than ideal news regarding the small transports recovered along the coast. Both of poor craftsmanship and material, the two vessels were not sea worthy and could only travel well along the coast. Such ships most likely came from Sydonia and were almost worthless inside the Republic, but some fool would probably buy them for but a couple florins.
