May 3rd, 1110 Having been given a pointer from the Baron Astamari, Magkahn had left his manor at once, after having made the arrangements for the Grand Ball. Knowing he would need to return home before the event, he set out post-haste with plans to return equally as fast home. He traveled lightly packing only 1 fine suit with him, while he wore some pelts and some Orcish harnesses for the journey. He would be armed with his sword and axe for this journey, and would be accompanied with his second in command, a Vhiemish commoner named Francis de Sabine. He was no lord, but he was no Grumio either, and knew how to proper handle himself in the upper-circle, despite his rough appearance. If this Great Company was something to brag about, perhaps he could learn a thing or two from them. Edited by Jeff, Apr 17 2013, 03:55 PM.

May 30th, 1110 S.A The Journey to the Great Sydon Company's compound in the small mountain town of Meliosi, took quite a bit of time. Once Magkhan had arrived to the Company's Compound, which was a fairly large sized castle but built mainly around the housing and training of troops, which was to be suspected. The Great Sydon Company had its origins in the War of the Brothers, when the Kingdom of Sydonia had fractured. Started by Alistar di Calambraso, the Company was mainly a peasant force and leaderless men-at-arms that sought compensation for defending Sydonica. Since then the Company has grown to be larger and one of the most notable Mercenary Companies in the world. When entering the Hall of the Grand Master Acio di Ventura, an impression was left on Magkhan. Many glorious banners for successful campaigns, and even memories of failed ones, lined the Hall. Campaigns were fought against the Elves in Arinae, against the Omnesburg Empire, and many other battles. "Welcome to my Hall, Master Orc, come eat and drink and be merry among us. Tell us tales of your Republic, and tell us tales of your journey, and then tell us the nature of your visit. For within these Halls, brothers of the sword are always welcome." |

The Orc was dressed in his finery he'd brought with him at this point, and smoked some strong Orcish herbs out of a gentlemanly pipe. While castle was impressive, it was the banners that really got his attention. To imagine his warband lasting as long as the Great Sydon Company and having such a history seemed almost unrealistic to him, given that the people of the world would probably kill one another off by then. He chuckled heartily. "I am still small time, you don't want to waste time hearing my fledgling story. Your company has fought Omnesburg itself, by god!" He admired the tall banner, once held by one of the steel men of Omnesburg. "I was told by a Baron Melo that you were the best, and I had to see for myself." He grinned tusks. "You see, just like when you were starting out, you had a leader over-lording a rabble of men. I am not to dissimilar." He took a fine puff on his pipe, blowing the smoke upwards in his own face, partially breathing in some of the exhale through his flat nostrils. "I thought you might be able to give me a few pointers." |

Acio di Ventura smiled, laughed and continued to eat. For a while he simply went on about the various campaign, telling tales of this or that. After some time, and after enough wine to drink, Acio di Ventura finally opened his mouth to talk about business. "I tell you something, Master Orc. To be a great mercenary, fighting is not really all that important. Yes you need to know how to wage battle, but more importantly you need to know which is the best battle to fight. Choose your battles wisely, not every fight is worth fighting." The Seasoned Veteran Commander pointed to a banner captured from Duke Simon of Letiroziole, in Rusyz. "That battle cost former Grand Master Giuseppe di Vagliato 600 out of 800 men to win. It was glorious, the Duke gave Giuseppe his payment and thank. Mercenaries, as you know, do not win great honor in battle. That will always go to your Contractor, just know to weigh cost of with any reward you may get." Acio smiled again laughed, pointing at the banner of Duke Omnethegrius von Omnesburg, of Omnethuringa, "Sometimes, it is also purely luck. You cannot be too cautious, sometimes risk is necessary especially if you want a name. Honor, we do not gain, reputation we do gain. When hired by King Rudolf of Kostritz, it was luck. I was considering not working, fearing that the mighty forces of the von Omnesburg would be too much. However, as you will find many times, you are hired only to supplement armies, usually to fill in holes in their numbers. When we met at Gleicesen, the von Omnesburg army was suffering from pestilence and we took them at camp. A tale the Kings of Kostritz will never tell you." Di Ventura continued on an on about various battles, some good, some bad. He always did point out that it was important to keep good books. First and foremost, this way of life is a means to life. To put food and shelter over the men, and to earn money for things they desire. He gave the advice that he should treat this like a business, heroism, valor and personal desire for action should be set aside. |
