Red Dead Legends - Setting and Themes

We find ourselves in the year 1900 during the 30-year end to Western American Frontier, also known as The Wild West. Within the territory of New Austin, the American Government are working to change the ways of life for every American citizen. The town of Blackwater has begun to change in that electric lines are noticeable on the sides of the roads, and street lights are dotted upon the pavements. There have even been sightings of machines known as 'cars' that ferry people across the roads.

To make way for such changes, and to help build more rail roads to connect the territories, The Pacific Union Railroad company have begun to burn down Native American villages whilst the government attempt to induct the homeless Native American's into their way of life. Most, if not all, of the Native Americans are hostile to such changes and have decided to wage war on the 'White-Skins' for destroying their homes and desecrating their lands. Meanwhile, the Government's of this is simple. The Native-Americans may be losing their land but they are gaining civilisation.

Many of the denizens within New Austin are also hostile to these changes. Many view the Government as oppressive and too powerful, preferring to stay as far away from as possible. They fear that the American way of life will be changed forever. Others are simply overwhelmed by the sudden changes and are not sure what to think. The Government attempts to assure everyone that the changes to the land are necessary and a good thing whilst discrediting those who argue back.

It is truly a turbulent time to be living in, but that's exactly what you're doing right now. Within Red Dead Legends... 14 years before Redemption is your story. Are you a government worker who is trying to bring law and order to the lands? Or are you a revolutionary who is fighting for his way of life? Are you a Native American who is forced into the American way of living? Or are you going to resist and fight for your way of life? Within New Austin... Legends are born every minute.

Themes

The setting for this campaign setting is fraught with danger at every turn. The wrong move could mean the difference between walking away with your life, or getting your head taken off by a mad gunman. But the campaign has several themes to it that one should stick to. There are four main themes:

Old World vs New World. The Old World is being introduced to technology, gaudy clothing and civilisation. Ultimately, two factions are seen to be fighting against each other: Bandits vs the Government. Both are bad as each other since the Bandits kill and steal to keep their ways alive whilst the Government takes money and fills the average citizens head with empty promises of great things to come. How does your character feel about this brave new world fast approaching and how do they react to it?

The Moral Choice of Good and Evil. The Government believe they are doing what is right, even though they interfere in life and usually ruin things for anyone brave enough to get to close. More often than not, the results are worse when they started off. Meanwhile, Bandits rob and steal... yet some choose only to rob the rich and give it to the poor in rebellious effort to halt the Government. What does your character believe in? Do they pick a side or do they not care who is right or wrong and simply remain neutral?

No Clean Getaways. There have been many who have robbed, stolen and killed. Now they try to put it behind them as they forge themselves a new destiny. And yet their past always finds a way to catch up to them. The only way to get clean in this land is through Redemption, pure and simple. In a land where quarrels are often settled by whom can draw the fastest, it's easy to do things that you wouldn't think you'd do. Is your character trying to start a new life? What will they have to do to redeem themselves? Or are they yet to sin?

Self-destruction. The people from the new west bring new clothes, auto mobiles and new technology. And yet there are those who believe that with it comes corruption. The Native Americans believe that one day, man will destroy everything in his path in an effort to create a new life. Some have even taken to killing White-Skins who venture to close to their camps. It is not just the Native Americans, but everyday citizens who believe that life is meant to be brutal and a struggle. These people often become the monsters that they damn to others. How does your character attempt to resist the change? Or do they go with the changes and change their whole moral compass?
