I've been reading that prophylaxis for contacts in a case of meningitis is necessary - why is this the case when the causative organisms of meningitis are normal flora that we're all colonised with anyway? Just because the organism happened to get into the meninges of the patient, surely that doesn't mean any contacts are any more or less likely to get meningitis? |
