Long ago, the world thrived. Societies created great machines powered by the heat of the flesh of the earth, which could travel like streaks of lightning across the endless sky. Flawless alchemy allowed them to grow crops in great number, to cleanse their food of pestilence and households of dirt. Their knowledge of medicine allowed them to treat even the worst of afflictions with barely any effort. But the people of that time pursued their vices, fed their greed and their hatred and their gluttony. Their discoveries were to benefit themselves, and not their brethren. And they were struck down. A great Cataclysm struck the earth, shook the ground, and punished the Faithless for their sins. Their discoveries were lost, eaten up by the soil and stone. Their bones were ground to dust and blown about by the wind. The earth retook its lands, and left what was left of the Faithless to fend for itself and face atonement for its selfish past. And many times since then has Terrae gone around Solis, many winters falling and rising, the artefacts of civilisations past sinking deeper into the soil. The Faithless have forgotten their past, have accepted that constant struggle and endless wilderness are simply a part of life. The spires of chapels, protruding from the frostbitten ground, the tops of clocktowers, the broken domes of palaces; all are simply mysterious ruins of a time long gone. But secrets, keys, curses, and records still lay beneath, still hold the truth and knowledge of the past. Perhaps, even, there are ways to reverse what has been done. But that remains to be seen.
