The Man Who Cracked The World
"There was one SOLDIER named Sephiroth, who was better than the rest. But when he found out about the terrible experiments that made him, he began to hate Shinra. And then, over time, he began to hate everything."

Name: Sephiroth

Nicknames / Alias: The One Winged Angel; the Man in Black; the Perfect Monster; Project “S”

FF: VII

Age: 32 (appears to be in his early to mid twenties)

Height / Build: Sephiroth is tall, standing over 6'1 in height, with a lean, muscular build.

D.O.B.: Exact date unknown, 1980

Race: Human / Jenova Hybrid

Weapon: The Masamune – A mystic sword of incredible destructive power, the Masamune is Sephiroth's personal weapon. Similar to a Japanese katana or nodachi of exquisite make and beauty, the weapon is known for its incredible length of approximately seven feet, with tsuba and tsuka of gold and blue; its long blade is flawless, and hums like crystal as air passed over it. Sephiroth is said to be the only one able to effectively wield the Masamune, and in his hands it has proven nigh indestructible, capable of cutting through almost anything, and channeling his immense power perfectly. He is able to summon the weapon to hand or dismiss it at will, the blade appearing and disappearing in spiritual green flames in an instant. The Masamune is said to have a number of unique powers and qualities, including never failing to find its target, always critically injuring its foe, perfectly channeling non-elemental energy, enhancing the physical and magical powers of its wielder, and augmented their speed and agility, although how much of this is due to its own traits or being empowered with Sephiroth's might and magic is difficult to say.

Level: 90

Strength: 370

  • Physical: 120
  • Magical: 130
  • Agility: 120
Special Skills: Sephiroth is a supremely capable combatant. He is a masterful swordsman, the greatest in his own world, with skill and technique unmatched even by the closest thing he had to peers among the best of SOLDIER. Possessed of truly superhuman strength, speed, agility, reflexes, and endurance, with cognition and senses to match, as well as a wealth of incredibly potent supernatural or magical abilities, Sephiroth is capable of totally overwhelming his opponents in combat. Wielding the extraordinary length and weight of the Masamune effortlessly, he can attack opponents unrelentingly with strikes of extreme speed and power, aggressively pressing them from what seems like every angle and direction at once, all with absolute precision; when combined with his ability to produce energy attacks through his sword that can easily cut through or reduce even massive structures of solid metal and concrete to rubble in an instant, he becomes a nearly unstoppable force in personal combat. Sephiroth's skill in combat is equally proficient in defense, allowing him to block, parry, and deflect blows (as well as spells) with the same speed and strength he uses to strike, and almost instantly turn any defense into a brutal and sudden counterattack; he is easily capable of guarding himself even against multiple opponents using shorter weapons while still wielding his own Masamune, a testament to his truly supernatural dexterity and precision. Equally as important in his fighting style is his incredible maneuverability; Sephiroth constantly seeks to maintain a total dominance of the battlefield as he moves about at will, taking whatever position he pleases in relation to his opponent or surroundings with impunity, always maintaining an advantage and leaving his foes off balance and vulnerable through his extreme speed and agility, ability to both levitate and truly fly of his own power, and his talent for nearly instantaneous teleportation throughout a battlefield.

Magic: Sephiroth is possessed of immense magical knowledge and power. As the most perfect Jenova hybrid, as well as formerly (and perhaps still, in part) a higher being existing purely from within the Lifestream itself as the will of its negative mirror and Jenova's cells, he can naturally manipulate and call upon magic in ways and on a scale that only the mightiest can comprehend. However, as he again possesses his own body, Sephiroth normally eschews the use of his magic and similar powers, preferring to achieve victory through his own swordsmanship and techniques; some part of a SOLDIER's honor, however twisted, remains within him. Only when faced with the spells and abilities of an exceptionally powerful opponent will he tap into well of his dark heritage and ancient knowledge, calling upon the extremely powerful, unique magics detailed below that he has heightened and refined his many affinities and spells into. Beyond these, Sephiroth has a number of other, less easily classified powers of supernatural or magical origin, born of his not only accepting his heritage, but actively taking over a Jenova's new will, and his time as a spiritual being within the Lifestream, absorbing the knowledge of countless ages, retained and enforced at least in part by his unbreakable will, despite his changed state of being. These abilities are known to include forms of telekinesis, a potent mix of telepathy and empathy, the ability to project illusions (to many purposes) into the minds of other beings, and the capacity to mentally manipulate creatures that contain Jenova's cells in their body or who are weak enough of mind, to the point of exerting total control over their bodies and minds. While his control over factors such as the “negative Lifestream” and Geostigma are not what they were during his time as a higher spiritual being, his will over Jenova cells is still potent enough that he can alter their development heavily, shapeshifting them into other forms, and even restore his own body of devastating damage through absorbing them.

Limit Break: The One-Winged Angel - Calling upon the full power of his heritage and past, Sephiroth temporarily transforms himself into a higher being, taking on a form more fit for a god than a mere SOLDIER. His single large, black angelic wing manifests, black feathers and a dark, mist-like energy flowing steadily from its wake; two more wings, smaller but similar in form, seem to sprout from his hips, spreading out beneath his coat, each one white and edged in lavender, both glowing softly. An intense aura of fiery white light radiates from Sephiroth's form, even as his Masamune suddenly blazes with the same spiritual flames it is normally called from. His eyes brighten with an unnatural wintry glow while his hair writhes as if with a mind of its own, and the cruelty and awe of his once-deific state settle fully into his now overwhelming, frightening presence even as large, interwoven golden rings and symbols burn into being floating behind him, filled with a light like unto a muted sun. In this state Sephiroth's power is vastly augmented in every way, as he has in effect temporarily ascended again into a being more god than man, a fusion of the two heights of power he reached before being undone by hubris. While not able to maintain it for an extended period of time, Sephiroth gains access to certain unique and incredibly powerful new abilities while in this form, and aside from the explosive effect that his augmented power has upon his usual spells and techniques, a number of his more signature abilities are further notably altered and enhanced.

  • Supernova - (WIP - Looking at allowing him to manipulate this power in a number of ways; effectively, it depends upon how much power he has to call upon, and what form that power takes. He could focus the relation to a sun in a way, using it almost like Light of Judgement from VI, conceivably. Or could call a true Meteor, with enough spiritual energy available. Might even cause a true supernova, ripping the core from a star and casting foes into it, with enough power and telekinetic force available...although not necessarily anywhere near the local cluster and whatnot. Transport! So a variety of possibilities and ideas.)

  • Reunion - While in his One-Winged Angel form, Sephiroth' heightened connection with both his status as Jenova's true successor and his past as a higher spiritual being places him constantly under the effect of a powerful Reraise effect. In practice, this ability seems to consume either the very matter and energy involved in his transformation, or a suitably near and great enough amount of Jenova cells or Lifestream itself, and use that to automatically restore and revive him from fatal injuries or even near-total destruction to his form suffered while in his empowered state, although doing so naturally returns him to his normal self.

  • Enhanced Abilities - (WIP - His various Limit Break-based abilities reach those forms while in this state (complete with added effects), he stops using certain abilities completely in favor of others (discarding Pale Horse fully for Ultima), certain spells become auto-cast on him (like Aurora Screen), and all his other abilities are merely enhanced by his significantly augmented powers, such as his physical attacks always being enhanced by non-elemental energy and certain debuffs, and possibly...getting a Souleater/Darkness/Costly Punch style attack?)
Summon: The Dark Crystal - Jenova Rebirth

Appearance: Tall, with a lean and muscular build, Sephiroth wears his iconic long black coat, adorned with several metal buckles and elaborate silver pauldrons; its fitting sleeves reach fully down his arms to meet matching black gloves at the metallic rings forming the sleeves end. He also wears a pair of high black boots, ringed in metal near their tops, and matching black trousers. The top of his coat is open to reveal his chest, with his leather SOLDIER suspenders crossed over it and the belt they belong to, complete with SOLDIER logo still intact, is visible along his abdomen through the lower area of the coat's part. The coat is closed at the waist by an ornate belt decorated with beads, and Sephiroth wears a bracelet with similar beads on his right wrist. Beneath his coat he wears white sashes with lavender on their edges, partially visible along the lower half of his coat, with a small blue cover of similar make worked into the right shoulder of his coat, beneath the pauldron. Sephiroth's silver hair is very long, and he wears his lengthy bangs parted to either side of his face. He is known to have refined, even beautifully handsome features, such as an attractive nose, high cheekbones, and slim but full lips matched to a deep and resonating voice, somewhere between classical and otherworldly; in particular he is known for his unique wintry green eyes, almost almond shaped and slightly slanted, and their startling cat-like, slitted pupils. Sephiroth is frequently seen with the Masamune, the seven-foot long katana that is his personal weapon, and it is not uncommon for a strange, glowing light to blaze in his eyes when his emotions are heightened, nor for him to be seen with the single black angelic wing that extends from his right shoulder blade and back when manifested.

Personality: Sephiroth is cold, ruthless, and proud, highly logical and capable of killing without hesitation or remorse. He is highly intelligent, and respectful to very few; aside from these very rare “worthy” individuals, he looks down upon almost all others he encounters. Sephiroth is possessed of a dry sense of humor frequently present throughout his otherwise professional demeanor, a carryover from his days as the greatest SOLDIER seen now through the glass of one who views himself as a rightful god; however, there are a select few he has found that he can empathize with through his own experiences and past, now more a part of himself than it has been in many years, and he shows a surprising openness and pity for such people. Extremely focused and dedicated to his goal, Sephiroth has an unbreakable force of will, and is highly confident, to the point of being openly arrogant; however, as the strongest SOLDIER who had ever lived, who has become perhaps the strongest being in his world's history, it is understandable for him to be so. It is, however, arguable as to whether it is solely this confidence, or something of a “SOLDIER's honor” that leads him to fight almost all battles solely through his own strength and technique as a swordsman, rather than relying on magic or abilities Always well-spoken and graceful, even when filled with malice, Sephiroth is calm, collected, and in control to a fault, especially after his past deaths at the hands of Cloud Strife; too many times has he allowed his hatred for someone, his underestimation of their strength and will, brought about the near-destruction of his purpose. While he can be frustrated, provoked, and caught off-guard, the highly perceptive and experienced former SOLDIER sees to it that such occurrences are rare.

While he still considers himself the one who should be god of this world, the new guiding will of Jenova's great and terrible cycle across the cosmos, Sephiroth's deaths, rebirth into a world and future already strange and new, and unique mental state brought on by his shifting state and new form has altered his twisted mind somewhat. While still cruel, vengeful, and murderous, Sephiroth is no longer unconditionally and uncontrollably so; both his failures and his new body and mind have brought about this change, and while his will still kill, torture, and viciously bring down retribution on those who sees fit to deserve such, and take pleasure in it, he no longer does so without reason, or beyond reason. He sees himself as having ascended beyond the petty grudges that once helped bring about his downfall, although arguably the honor of the SOLDIER who once was, capable of fighting a war by whatever means necessary yet showing restraint otherwise may have as many roots in this, supported by the occasional rumor of what almost appears to be “sadness” or “resignation” deep within his wintry eyes. Another trait which may have arisen from the man he once was is Sephiroth's love of battle. He enjoys combat, the struggle of worthy opponents, and finds a purity and purpose in it. This love does not extend to conquest and war; if anything, such activities carried out to their end might rob him of the interesting and capable foes he seeks, and often enough does not kill upon defeating, instead encouraging them to improve, and prove their own reason for living. When standing as the swordsman clashing with an opponent he does not disdain, he is most the main some few SOLDIERs might still remember; the one who enjoys battle, who was born for it, and comes alive in it.

While still somewhat the “higher being” than he had once become, a spiritual titan and absolute master of Jenova's cells, Sephiroth is nonetheless a living man again, with his own vessel, his own body and mind, changing his relationship to his past and former mental state in subtle but ever more important ways. Similarly, the goals and purposes which pull him forward have changed; having already come to a strange new world filled with possibilities from so many different origins, Sephiroth seeks not to destroy it, but to experience it, to find its knowledge and developments, its warriors and gods, and live a new world in all the ways that Jenova, viral instinct that it was, could never have comprehended. While his wish to attain at last the full power of a god he feels is his destiny, there are other beings he is curious of, and has a desire to discover and understand; among them the Cetra who had combated and beget his actions from within the Lifestream for so long, as well as whoever or whatever brought about this Merge, and who he might use to learn all he could about it, to satisfy the yearning for knowledge he has in regards to theories that form constantly in his mind in relation to the planet, cycles, these resurrections, and more. Sephiroth stands completely apart from any other “villains” of the worlds come together; if anything, he is more likely to oppose those of them who might interfere with his enjoyment and experiencing of all this new world has to offer him, or who foolishly think to place themselves as something higher than mere conquerors, something his pride simply could not abide. By the same coin, admittedly, he could find those who might interest them, whether through their state or abilities, quite worthy of study and interaction.

History: Sephiroth was born in Nibelheim to Professor Hojo and Lucrecia Crescent as the perfect result of the Jenova Project in 1980 (exact date of birth remains unknown). Hojo and Lucrecia were the assistants of Professor Gast Faremis, the scientist in charge of “Project S”. The project was meant to study the remains of an entity known as Jenova that had been found, and at the time mistakenly believed an Ancient, or Cetra, who were known for their ability to commune with the planet; Shinra wished to reproduce the assumed-extinct Cetra for their own benefit. Professor Hojo injected Jenova's cells into Lucrecia's unborn child, upon which Lucrecia carried Sephiroth to term, his fetal form merging with the Jenova cells as he developed from little more than a mere cluster of cells himself into a truly unique being. Upon birth, the perfect Jenova hybrid was immediately taken from his mother by Shinra, who had never even held her son.

While not a Cetra, the vastly enhanced physiology, incredible magical potential, and unique abilities granted Sephiroth by his dark “mother” gave Shinra another use for the child; they raised him to be their super soldier, his potential only growing as he matured and continued to evolve. Told nothing of his parents, given only his mother's name as “Jenova”, Sephiroth always knew that he was different from other children, despite ignorance of the terrible experiments that made him, and the alien being “Jenova”. The details of his childhood and adolescence are unclear, but as he was instrumental in ensuring Shinra's dominance in the Wutai War, which began in 1992, he is assumed to have been a child soldier. His meteoric, almost instant rise to the rank of SOLDIER First Class, the highest echelon within the force born of the very experiments that created him, became legendary, and he was admired and respected as a war hero; even within SOLDIER itself his strength was considered to be unreal, unequaled even by other First Class operatives or and other Jenova hybrids. It was during this war that many would idolize the new poster boy of Shinra and seek to join it and become heroes themselves, leading to Sephiroth meeting the two who would become his first true friends; Genesis Rhapsodos and Angeal Hewley.

By the near-end of the Wutai War, Sephiroth had become close friends with the two, themselves risen to be the only SOLDIERs even close to rivaling him. However, events during that period put a strain between the three, and by the end of the war Sephiroth is confused and conflicted about Genesis in particular in the wake of his disappearance. Sephiroth's beliefs were constantly challenged in the following times, through the rising activity of the anti-Shinra terrorist group known as AVALANCHE and the discovery that Genesis had defected from Shinra with a scientist named Hollander, creating an rebellion and grafting his own cells onto fellow SOLDIER members. In an important shift within him, Sephiroth personally engages the leader of AVALANCHE, Elfe, and her words would prove to have a profound effect on him, her question of whether or not he ever wanted to “fight for a reason” in striking him to the core. Amidst Genesis' rebellion Angeal went rogue as well, and Sephiroth found himself torn between his loyalties and choosing his friends, while becoming closer to another rare comrade; Zack Fair, Angeal's former pupil, and a First Class SOLDIER himself.

The emotional turmoil that captured Sephiroth while participating in the remaining conflicts with AVALANCHE and Genesis' forces continued to lead to greater independence and a search for reasons, to the point that he refused missions concerning his rogue friends and purposefully allowed to escape more than once. Despite this, Angeal and Genesis both were seemingly slain, defeated by none other than Zack Fair and on their own wishes, and by the end of this era Sephiroth's decision is made; soon after, he reveals to his now friend and companion Zack that he is planning to leave Shinra once and for all after their next mission. On September 22nd, 0002, Sephiroth arrives in Nibelheim on what would be his final mission, investigating an outbreak of monsters believed connected to Genesis in some way, accompanied by Zack and two Shinra infantrymen, one of whom was Cloud Strife, and guided by a local named Tifa. Over the course of the mission he discovered mutated monsters who were once human, the chamber containing Jenova's remains, and was confronted by none other than Genesis, who gave him all-too incomplete information about the Jenova Project and its goals. Disturbed, Sephiroth sought answers, finding the misguided research notes of the scientists involved with the project, and coming to believe that Jenova had been a Cetra, the last Cetra and victim of Shinra's twisted plots. Sent over the edge into madness by the imperfect revelations of his birth, the then-insane Sephiroth decided to take vengeance for his people, betrayed and left to die by humanity, and for his mother.

Sephiroth destroys Nibelheim on October 1st, burning it and slaughtering many before leaving to claim Jenova's body. In the events that followed he killed Tifa's father, cut down Tifa herself, and after being confronted by a horrified and enraged Zack defeats him easily. After he is caught off-guard and impaled by Cloud; surviving due to his enhanced physiology, Sephiroth takes Jenova's head and brutally attacks Cloud, before the boy manages to hurl an injured Sephiroth into the pool of Mako below the react through sheer will. Following the Nibelheim Incident, Shinra seals Sephiroth's records, declaring him killed in action, and covers up the incident. Despite falling into the Lifestream, Sephiroth's will was too strong to be overwhelmed, and for several years he travels it, gaining great knowledge and power as his body reforms at the North Cave in a cocoon of Mako; Sephiroth comes to realize the truth of his origin, his former madness giving way to his domination of Jenova's cells and his place as the beings new guiding will, transforming into a dark and cruel new self. His goal of merging with the Lifestream to seize control of the planet as a god and carry on Jenova's sinister cycle is born, and he begins guiding her remains and cells across the world to bring his plans about, beginning his Reunion and the terrible events of Meteorfall.

Five years after his apparent death Sephiroth's Reunion begins. Manipulating events across the world to serve his purposes, and acting through Jenova's remains, the former SOLDIER brings about chaos and death across several continents, murders Aerith Gainsborough, the last Cetra and his only threat, in her attempt to call forth Holy and protect the planet, and drives Cloud Strife to the edge of madness, forcing him to betray his companions and deliver unto him the Black Materia, allowing Sephiroth to call Meteor and seemingly secure his plans for godhood and beginning Jenova's cycle anew. Preparing to ascend into a higher state of being whilst holding back the magic of Holy from answering Aerith's final prayers, Sephiroth was, against all odds, confronted one last time by Cloud and his allies for the fate of the planet. With blood and determination they managed to defeat him, destroying his physical body; his mind, however, endured. Attempting to take over Cloud's body and control him again, Sephiroth found his defeat again in the determination and will of the man who he had underestimated once before as well. Resisting, Cloud cast Sephiroth's mind into the Lifestream and seemingly destroyed him, allowing Holy, with the help of the Lifestream as directed by Aerith's will, to destroy Meteor in late January, 0008.

Sephiroth's mind refused to die. By focusing on his hatred of Cloud, he survived dispersal into the Lifestream, and while his sense of self fragmented and his peripheral memories were lost he even succeeded in using the Lifestream's manifestation to save the planet as an opportunity to spread his memories across the globe, infecting the planet with Geostigma, a disease which, through its constant feeding of corrupted souls back into the planet's heartbeat, allowed him to eventually craft avatars through the memories of how others perceived him to search for Jenova's true remains in the world, and thus allow him to retake his true form once more. While contested by Aerith within the spiritual realm both inhabited and guided, his plan succeeded in 0009, as one of his “Remnants” successfully fused with a surviving cluster of Jenova's cells and allowed Sephiroth to manifest himself physically once again, restored, and having achieved a higher state of being than ever before. Intending to taint the Lifestream with Geostigma's dead until he can control it fully, turning the planet into his vessel to travel across the void in search of new planets to rule, Sephiroth's more immediate goal was to torture and torment Cloud, his long nemesis. Even an ascended state of being in which his new limits were barely within comprehension, however, could not save Sephiroth from his hubris, and his own arrogance and Cloud's determination combined to give his bane the chance to desperately strike Sephiroth down while he still held back, banishing him to a purely spiritual existence clinging desperately to a sense of self with iron will again even as Aerith's own efforts nearly scoured the world of Geostigma.

It was in this state, desperately attempting to retain his sense of self while cast into the Lifestream once more, that he was forced to change. As his memories were stripped away, peripheral and deeper, his sense of self fragmented and broken, and even the perceptions other had of him difficult to hold on, Sephiroth's will refused once more to fade away in shadow, and the essence of what remained of the legendary SOLDIER was forced to let go of the past that had been his sole downfall too many times. Hatred for the worthless human who had defeated him couldn't be his driving force any longer, not if it inevitably led to his downfall. Another purpose, another focus had to be higher, more important, whether the cosmic cycle he had inherited from his dark mother, or contending with the flower girl who had become more truly his equal and enemy than any man had, even when he had simply taken action against her when she first seemed a threat, long ago. Sephiroth settled upon that strange battle, seizing it in what remained of his mind; how he had slain her, how her will had in turn stopped his vengeance upon the planet, and yet allowed his own will and memories to spread to the world in the first place, bringing out the possibility of his revival, before wiping it clean after his failure; their actions had beget one another, life to death and death to life, too many times. It was this strange relationship that kept something of Sephiroth's mind alive and pure within the Lifestream in the time after his failed revival and the events that came after, until, whether it had felt like only a moment or a long millennia to him, he felt the Merge begin from within its source...

The Merge felt strangely familiar to Sephiroth; something deep within the self that remained to him, the primitive instincts that had once guided Jenova before his will, found it not unlike the planetary parasitism that was once its cycle. From his remaining sentience and power within the Lifestream, or at least its negative shadow, Sephiroth had a unique perspective of the event as it occurred; he felt its strangeness, its imperfections, the tortured manner in which it fell. As the existence he'd once known slipped away in something like the death he'd felt too many times before, Sephiroth's mind already raced with curiosity, interest, and much more...and then, without explanation, he awoke. Liking coming alive for the first time, he found himself in the strange new world, one he'd never known...and existed solely within his own body yet again. His form, his face, his hands...his mind and will, not a projected avatar, but a truly living being. Changed and changing in ways he'd not yet begun to comprehend by this enormous shift, Sephiroth stepped into the new world as a new man, not quite like anything he'd been before; there was much to do, many goals and cycles to seek, and so much to understand. Freed of his past, he resolved to create his shining future on the soil of this new world, to seek out the source of this “Merge”, to attain the godhood that he'd been denied too many times by his own mistakes...and to finish once and for all the battles he'd left unfinished, in his hubris. Thus the Man in Black stepped into the new world...
