“The number you are trying to reach is no longer in service. Thank you for choosing T Mobile.”

Jade swore at the automated message. She’d lost track of how many messages she’d left for Hawk on the burner cell he’d last had. He’d never once returned any of them. She’d run his SSN and his credit cards, and there was no trace of activity. She’d even tried hunting down the “cousin” he mentioned but to no avail.

Jade hung up and threw the phone across the room. It hit the brick wall and shattered on the floor. “God fucking damnit!” she screamed, tears streaming down her face. She threw herself on her mattress and sobbed into her pillow until she fell into a fitful sleep.

Several Years Earlier:
The wilderness of Wyoming.

“Jade, I need to show you something… In private.” The tall, rather pompous blonde analyst who’d been dragged along with them on the mission grabbed Jade by the arm. For someone who looked like he’d never lifted a finger in his life, his grip was surprisingly strong.

Jade wrenched her arm out of his hand and glared at him. Someone couldn’t have looked more out of place in the woods if they tried. Amongst a group of soldiers, he was preened, well dressed, and smelled of expensive cologne. While he seemed competent as an analyst, she really wasn’t sure whose brilliant idea it was to send him along instead of linking him in remotely.

“Is that supposed to be a come on? Because I thought I'd made it abundantly clear that the next man who lays a hand on me loses the hand,” Jade replied.

“Don’t flatter yourself,” Marcus replied, looking at her with disdain. “You’re not my type.

“Don’t presume to judge me, Cavanaugh.” Jade said. “You have no idea who I am.”

Marcus laughed. “I’ve read your dossier. Child prodigy, test scores off the chart... And yet you prefer to spend your life getting high and killing on command. You’re nothing more than hired muscle.”

“You think you’re so superior with your exclusive boarding schools and clean living? Well we both ended up in the same place, didn’t we, so what does that say?” Jade replied curtly.

Marcus sighed. “This is asinine. I didn’t call you in here to fight. I called you in here to talk.”

Jade cackled. “You want to talk! About what?”

“I’ve been doing some digging. Something isn’t right with all of this and you’re the only one here who I trust…”

Jade awoke with a start. She hadn’t thought about that mission in months. All the same, it gave her renewed inspiration in her search for Hawk.

She opened up her laptop and logged onto Facebook. She typed Marcus Cavanaugh into the search. His profile came up. Unlike Hawk and Hitomi who had locked theirs down, his was relatively open.

Marcus’ profile was littered with photos of him with Stefan… At a film festival, on the beach in Cannes, at a gallery opening… They looked happy… As if the last few years hadn’t had an effect on them.

One of the more recent photos was of the two of them in each other’s arms. Stefan was showing the person taking the photo a silver ring on his ring finger. Beneath it were dozens of congratulatory messages. It seemed that Marcus and Stefan were engaged to be married. A sour taste rose in Jade’s mouth. Everything was so fucking easy for him.

Jade clicked on Hitomi’s congratulatory comments and scanned her profile, looking for signs that she and Hawk were together, but she found non. Most of her profile was locked down, save a few photos of her newest hair styles, and a series of photos from a recent holiday with Marcus and Stefan.

Jade swore and slammed the machine shut. Where the fuck was Hawk? One of them had to know.

BEEP

Hawk? Sniff, I know you’re mad, but call me? I need you…

BEEP

Hawk? I know you’re fucking there! Pick up the goddamned phone. I NEED you!

BEEP

Hawk! You fucking son of a bitch! I know you’re fucking her. You know what? Just forget it. We’re through!

BEEP

Hawk? Are you there? I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have yelled… Call me?

“UGH!” Jade screamed in frustration, hanging up and ringing again. She’d lost track of how many messages she’d left Hawk until the voice mail on his burner phone had filled and then the line had gone out of service. She’d managed to track down calls made from Cavanaugh to a US number. She knew it was Hawk. Cavanaugh hated America more than she did. Who else would he be calling?

And not the voice mail on this phone was full, too. Jade threw the phone on her bed, losing it in the pile of dirty sheets. She picked up the spoon, lighter and small foil covered wad of heroin that she’d been working on over the past day. The flick of a lighter, a few drops of water and Jade watched the blood swirl into the syringe as it mixed with the heroin. She pushed the plunger and waited for the sweet embrace of the only lover who’d never failed her to lull her into oblivion. Hawk could fuck himself.
