Enoch

The second son of a noble father , Enoch had been groomed at an early age for the clergy. When the Crusades rose ,at the age of 12, he begged his father to allow him to squire for an uncle bound for the holy land. His father agreed , hoping it would teach the boy of his purpose and perhaps strengthen his calling to the priesthood. It was a great and virtuous adventure for the lad , until they landed in a port beset by cholera. It was his first encounter with death on such a grand scale. For the rest of the journey east ,he saw the ravages of cholera again and again. After a year of travel on the sea and over land young Enoch had experienced the deaths of hundreds , infants , women , old men, boys his own age.His uncle trained him in martial studies , wanting a squire who knew the purpose of weapons and war.Once the expedition had reached Syria , Enoch was quite proficient for one of his age.His first taste of combat against the Muslims was near the border of Judea when the army encountered a strong force of scouts. The outriders attempted to engage the small force but many escaped.Within half a day , a host of cavalry supported by light infantry flanked the column and threatened to scatter the holy army.Enoch was present when a small force sought to burn the supply train.he had taken up a lance and from the ground impaled a rider as he bore down on the boy.He was blinded in a warrior's rage and did not recall what happened next. But he was told that he lifted the rider's scimitar and cut down three warriors as they tried to set fires. He gave up the pursuit of the church and dedicated himself to the way of the knight.
As he grew , he grew in sill and reputation.Stationed eventually in Jerusalem with his uncle , Enoch came to know the true side of the Crusades.Securing the holy land opened trade to the east.Knights that had sworn to protect the church had sworn truly to Mammon. He saw Christians killing infants for being of Jewish blood...saw priests taking Muslim whores and then cursing them from the street....saw knights drunkenly fighting over the smallest of insults....saw workmen cheated of wages from nobles who knew they had no means to return home. And above it all stood the Church extolling the virtue of the war against the Godless heathen.
After 12 years in the holy land ,Enoch returned home quietly , never seeing his family again, dedicating himself to gold and killing for it seemed that it was all that was true.
