I know a lot of people swear by dog crates, saying that the dog will think of their crate as a safe retreat, which is all very well if one is a responsible owner. However, from what I have seen, many people shut their dogs into their crates, to keep them out of the way, or to make their own lives 'easier'. Some fosterers keep their dogs 'crated' for long hours. One of my daughters is a Vet and she and her friends do not think that crates are a good thing per se, because most of the general public do not know how to use them responsibly!! |

Now for the right reasons a crate is invaluable Being a foster home , it's one way for the newbie To feel safe in its new environment . It also allows my dogs to except the foster dog Safely into the home . It's used for a short period of Time to allow contact . Then I can introduce slowly one at Time , until eventually they have met all that live here . Now I have a crate set up and I can assure you that when the door is open Mine try to get in and sleep there xx |

My dogs are laying in their crates now I believe, both Bailey and our rescue Xena use crates through choice although Baileys is left open 24/7 Xena's is locked when we are out or asleep and that's purely because she is a wind up merchant and will push all Baileys buttons until she gets a reaction and end up getting hurt. More often than not both dogs will take theirselves to their beds during the evening, we used a crate to assist in Baileys upbringing and anyone who has met him will tell you he's a true gent, Xena we understand was crated 23 hours a day, left in her own faeces is a beautiful most loving girl who plays with Bailey constantly while we are present but cannot be trusted alone with him or any other dog. Proof in our own home that like most things the crate can be used positively as well as negatively. |

So agree with you that crates can be used positively or negatively. And they do play a big part to helping and the safety of the dogs

A crate imo is a pretty essential safety 'net' for those of us involved with rescue dogs particularly in the short term. |
