Season 3, Week 9: Space Harrier - MAME; romulan(s) 'sharrier' (and 'sharrirb')

Week 9 sees previous lurker Russgalleywood's nomination of Space Harrier in MAME.

There's an issue with some romsets with this one, so you may need to take the files from 'sharrib' and add them to the parent 'sharrier' zip file.
You can grab them both from emuasylum if you're having trouble tracking those down, listed as 'Space Harrier' and 'Space Harrier (8751 315-5163)'

Twin Galaxies has a high score in excess of sixteen and a half million for this in MAME which I suspect some players may approach.

We'll play on the default settings:
1 Coin/1 Credit
Lives = 3
Add Player Score = 5000000
Trial Time = Off
Difficulty=Normal

No continues allowed, no auto-fire allowed

Scores to be in by 12:00 noon on 28/05/06.

Final scores at 12:00 noon on 28/05/06:

1) 16796270 - Necronom = 100.00 points
2) 13548290 - BigDon = 87.55 points
3) 11011590 - TK421 = 77.22 points
4) 10878750 - Elgin_McQueen = 74.05 points
5) 10462170 - Antiriad2097 = 70.03 points
6) 8927120 - Leezer = 62.69 points
7) 8330110 - RS200 = 58.13 points
8) 7963790 - Sureshot = 54.26 points
9) 7858720 - Kaiserpc = 51.17 points
10) 6821360 - Merman = 45.31 points
11) 6604590 - Stomach = 41.88 points
12) 6325250 - Russgalleywood = 38.27 points
13) 5627990 - Markopoloman = 33.42 points
14) 4667780 - Zaphod79 = 27.78 points
15) 4539380 - RevGiblet = 24.62 points
16) 3311460 - Fairziff = 18.19 points
17) 2947260 - Frank Chickens = 14.33 points
18) 2320100 - Ghostbiscuit = 9.68 points

Congratulations to Necronom for a record breaking performance that wins this week :ph43r:

It uses three buttons: Fire, fire and fire. Is there a difference, 'cause I can't see one.

I just don't want to be missing something important.

The machine had multiple fire buttons, but they all did the same thing. You'd have expected them all to be wired to the same input, but obviously the software had the capability for more. Perhaps additional fire modes were dropped from the game, maybe a smart bomb? I've no idea, maybe it was just for future use of the cabs with other games if it was a success. This game has no distinction.

I do remember using the alternate fire buttons when my trigger finger got tired in the arcade (our local one was fortunate enough to get the big deluxe hydraulic cab of this).

MPM, this score ought to be attainable by a noob, I died some very silly deaths in this attempts. Oh, and your Chuckie Egg placing has been duly noted ;)

This is the first time I've used the old Sidewinder joystick I picked up from a charity shop ages ago. It works really well for this, quite reminiscent of the arcade controls.

Its worth noting that this game is designed for analogue control, so players with digital sticks/pads or keyboard may find it a little quirky.

I thought it was a bit hard! I'll try using my mouse  I don't expect it to be any easier

Thanks for clearing up the three button thing.

Could clear this back in the day ... Don't think my reactions are quite what they once was, but i will give it a go :) ... this game works quite well with the analog sticks of a Xbox pad !.

That might be about as good as I get. Got to level 7, which is about as far as I'd usually achieve on 1 credit at the arcade.

The thing with this game is that almost every time you die, you just know its your own fault for running into something that was coming straight at you :o There are very few unfair deaths in it.

What was I supposed to do on the bonus stage? I was half avoiding things, then decided that maybe I'm supposed to hit them.

Tried the game with the keyboard and nearly through the whole system through the window!

Then I tried it with the mouse and nearly through it through the window again!

BUT

then I tried my 6yr olds Logic3 Gamepad - and I found I couls actually play the game! I think level 6 was about the best I could do back when I was a nipper

Will play again later. :D

I can get to level 8 before losing a life then it all starts to get a bit manic, mind warping and enduces dizzy spells.

Hard to find the trade off between shooting everything and risking running (flying) in to stuff.

Flying in circles around the screen seems to do the job for all the bosses I have encountered so far.

just to clarify this one ...
am i to use the sharrirb romset listed as :- space harrier (8751 315-5163) or sharrier romset listed as :- space harrier (rev a,8751 315-5163a) which is the parent set.

my first attempt btw is 7366750 using the sharrirb romset but can soon switch to the sharrier romset if need be.

Use the 'sharrier' set, as that's the original parent. Either it or MAME have changed in a recent build, as the old set doesn't work with the new MAME. I think its down to the romdumps, as auditing the current 'sharrier' on most sites gives missing file errors. The missing files are contained in the other romset, 'sharrib', as they are from a cloned (pirate?) version of the game. Not all emus will run 'sharrier' with the missing files in a separate zip file, so to correct this we add the 'sharrib' files into the 'sharrier' zip.

TBH, having looked at the files, I don't really think it matters - you end up playing the same thing whichever version you run with this method...

The official line is that we're playing 'sharrier'

Elgin_McQueen, check your email. EmuAsylum may have pop ups, but at least it has the right files - some of the places I tried first still had the old unplayable ones.

Sureshot, the mouse needs to be enabled in the front end before the game is launched. Using MAME Classic myself and its in the configuration screens, alongside the resolution, sound settings etc, just a tick box for mouse.

I've had a few shots now, and I can confidently predict last place because:

a ) I've always been shite at Space Harrier,

b ) I'm on keys,

c ) For some reason, I can't get it to run faster than about 4fps,

d ) 360270

What's the best way to initiate the mouse in this?

Well, I'm using mame32, so it's right click on the game, properties > controller and tick enable mouse input, then controller mapping > and set AD stick to mouse input

Afraid to say I am struggling to get this working. Have both 'sharrier' and 'sharrib'.
Placed files in sharrier as instructed, but not seeing the title after an audit.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm surprised that you're finding this one dull, its a game I've always loved. Maybe its the rose tint effect - I still imagine how it felt in that cab so I have an extra dimension to the game.

That and the fact me and my mates played it on the C64 and Speccy for months.

Its maybe not the deepest game, but I still get a rush from it. Its like a drug induced version of 3D Deathchase.

It's fun, I think people were too harsh on the C64 version, which does give a good flavour of the coin-op but has its faults. Still, it's not one I've ever played in a real arcade. It has its moments.

Much better score from me - 6821360

It's just rather bland really, I'd prefer to be playing Outrun or something instead of hammering fire while wildly careering across the screen. The camera angle when you're close to the ground is bloody annoying as well. They could have at least made the guy transparent, a la Punch Out!! in the 'cades.

And there lies the problem.

You're not supposed to career wildly around the screen, you're supposed to place him precisely out of danger. A gentle steady touch will see you get further. Being aware of your position when fired at, then picking a spot away from there while avoiding oncoming objects. Its like Out Run but a little more frantic, as instead of a car or two, you've got loads to avoid. The camera angle is all part of that - you can stay high and maintain visibility, but you really need to duck down to avoid shots. Avoiding shots by ducking increases the odds of collision thanks to the view...

Deciding when to hammer fire and when to lay off a bit makes a difference too. It may not help your score if you stop firing, but it may give you the stamina to take out the enemies/objects that count.

The more I play this, the more I like it. This has had as much play as any game this season from me, as it took some time on Sunday and then another chunk last night. I'm keen to get home and give it another go - I'll break past that 8 mil mark yet :ph43r:
