I'm quite pleased with that, though also slightly disappointed at just how close I came to topping BigDon's score as that would have been a first for me

Not sure I'll play this again this week - after this little headphone wearing session I was physically shaking, my heart was racing and my wife says I was breathing really heavy through it (she may just be jealous ;) )

oh dear Space Harrier not a favourite of mine! Much preferred Outrun.

Anyway, downloaded both roms from emuasylum, added in the files from b into the main zip file, re-audited and it didn't work with mame32 (v0.100) :(

The b zip file only contains epr7184.84 & epr7188.97 - but mame32 is complaining about the missing files; ic97.bin, ic84.bin and then "no good dump found" for mcu.bin

could someone send me a working copy of this please

Kaiser, I had the same problem you are having. I solved it by upgrading my version of MAME32 to .106

you will see then it will still say you have a bad rom - but it will become playable.

Got there in the end. Installed a newer version of Mame(.106) as advised and after deleting existing sharrier file, downloaded again and finally worked.
Not my favourite game I must say. Remember piling quite a few coins(50p?) into this when the hydraulic cab appeared in the Mint in Rhyl. The game is not as good as the hardware would have you believe, if you ask me.
Either that or I am just crap at it :)

Anyway....

Is this a particularly processor-intensive game? My laptop's struggling when there are more than about five things moving on screen (ie. all the time after the first three seconds). It doesn't seem to be a problem with any of the other games in the league so far.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. ;)

No, it should run fine on ancient hardware. I've run it in the past on an 850Mhz Duron system, I assume your laptop is faster than that.

Have you disabled all the background tasks? I ran it while downloading podcasts and iTunes caused it to chug a bit as its a system hog.

I've got a 1.33Ghz G4 with a gig of RAM. I thought that would have coped fairly easily. I've tried playing it with nothing else running but it still goes slow with choppy sound...

Wonder if it's anything to do with the fact that MacMAME = MAME32 .103, since people had problems until they upgraded to .106...?

Just checked my activity monitor... My CPU usage goes through the roof when Space Harrier is running...

Nail. Head. Hit.

If you had a proper PC you wouldn't be having this problem ;)

Might be worth trying an older version of the rom. I've a v0.86 set that might do the job...

Right, finally had a chance to play my own choice!

Have had a few goes and had a final go tonight which resulted in my best score by far!

I'm used to the Megadrive version which I think is easier and slower.

I think that's my lot. At least I finally had a chance to play a league game!

For the last wo lives I was had no idea what to do, just hanging on in there.

Still, I'm pleased with the score and the game is as good as ever and the music really helps to add to the experience.

finally got the game working tonight using mame32fx 1.06, had around 6 games.

Is it just me, or does the music remind anyone of the Blake's 7 theme tune?

It took you that long to decide the music didn't sound like Blake's 7 ;)

There's one little bit in both tracks that's near identical - I'm humming it now (to myself obviously as I'm at work ;) )

Well... I seem to have got to the root of the problem: MacMAME 1.03. I tried the 0.86 romset and it was exactly the same.

But THEN I remembered that I had MacMAME 0.77 on a CD somewhere and it works a treat on it. :)

So - full speed Space Harrier ahoy! Whether I can get any sort of score is a different matter... ;)

Well yes, you'd need an earlier MAME version to work with the earlier romset. I assumed that was obvious when I suggested it :P

Just don't be trying too hard now its working - I'm quite enjoying sitting near the top for a change.

It's totally the Blake's 7 theme, and also the Midnight Resistance theme, and also a U2 song used that bit as well on their current album (I forget which song, but I think it was a single).

Well done Necronom, that's one hell of a score - you've just beaten the MAME record at Twin Galaxies B)

I know I for one won't be catching up with you, you could have this one in the bag. BigDon's been a bit quiet sice he took first place though...

Thanks. I went for score rather than mainly spinning round in circles like I was before. It worked :)

My hand is just starting to recover after the manic button pressing. I was losing the ability to move and shoot at the end.

I think I'll play Resi Evil 4 now.

Has anyone else noticed that when you hit the 'extra coins button (5)' that this increases your lives that you start with? Most games only give more credits not more lives. When I start most Mame games the first thing I do is normally smack '5' loads of times and then hit '1'. I did this on this game and started with about 15 lives. Got a score of about 20 million but I don't think this will count ;)

I've been playing it on and off all week and not managed to better my early scores - I can get further in the game, but not with such high a score.

I think this is one of those games where if you try to think too much about what you are doing instead of just letting your reflexes take control then you are goosed. Will be having another run at it today but I think I maxed out early on in this game and don't envisage a challenge for first.

I've played this quite a lot now and I've come to a couple of conclusions. Either:

a ) There's something fundamental I'm missing out on, or

b ) I'm just shit.

Sadly, since it appears to be pure reaction-testing shootiness, I think it's b )...

Anyway, ALL-NEW score of a "massive":
