Its nomination time
Season 5 of the Retro Gaming League starts at 12:00 noon on the 17th September 2006. Full League rules can be found here. Now's the time to argue the toss if you don't agree with them, not halfway through the season Nomination Rules (short version): Post the name of two games you'd like to play in this thread. Nomination Rules (long version): Anyone wishing to participate can nominate 2 games in this thread, all will be added to the random selection for week 1. For these games to be included in subsequent weeks’ draws, players must post a score for the previous week (e.g. for your selection to be in the draw for week 5, you must play and post a score during week 4). Games played during Seasons 1-4 can not be nominated for Season 5. Nominations that were not played can be nominated again. All games will be assumed to be the Arcade/MAME versions unless otherwise specified. (Its helpful if you specify the romulan name [thanks Koops for highlighting that] ) Preference should be given to MAME where possible as its almost guaranteed all players will already have it. Other formats will be considered, but you will be expected to give fast and effective IT support to any other players who have difficulty with your emulator and/or game should it be selected. Bear in mind not everyone will have that 'Windows 98 only' Oric emulator you love so much or know how it works once its installed Try and nominate games you know if possible. Its repetition, I know - we're not totally against other systems (Chuckie Egg proved this in Season 3) but stick to MAME where possible. Games exempt from nomination: Season 1: Buggy Boy (C64) Green Beret Gyruss Jackal Metal Slug Super Vehicle 001 Mr Do's Castle Pac-Land Rick Dangerous (Atari ST) Rod-Land Sky Kid Time Pilot '84 Season 2: Bionic Commando Black Tiger Bombjack Cosmic Cop (aka Gallop APU) Crazy Kong Galaga 90 (PC Engine : Remember when I mentioned sticking to MAME. This is why...) Ghouls and Ghosts Gradius Strider Rainbow Islands Rolling Thunder 2 Season 3: Biomechanical Toy Bubble Bobble Chuckie Egg (BBC) Firetrap Hyper Sports Shadow Dancer Space Harrier Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers Wardner Willow Season 4: Bank Panic Cadillacs and Dinosaurs Funky Jet Gravitar Hyper Duel Mappy Mr Do! Just a short note here to point out I've changed the rules around late entries/extensions for holidays etc after this season's fiasco: "In the event that a player is unavailable to play during a normal gaming week (e.g. on holiday abroad), a token score equalling 50% of the lowest score that week will be awarded. Players must agree these dates in advance with me, late score entries or requests will not be accepted." I assume that is a more acceptable solution for all involved, gaining regulars a few points without anyone being able to take the mickey. |

OK here are my nomiatons, lets hope one of them get picked this time around heh!
Pulstar (Neo Geo MVS, playable on MAME) ![]() Essentaly this is the Neo Geo's homage to one of the greatest shoot-em-up's series ever made, R-Type. It's a fact that some of the team that worked on the old R-Type games did in fact work in this game to hence the increadbly similar first level lol. This game has check points and is challanging but also fair, granting the player plenty of power-up's when they die and so on so they are not over powered. Gun Force II (playable on MAME) ![]() A little known fact that the creators of this game at Irem went on to join the ranks of SNK and create what was later to be known as the Metal Slug series. Gun Force II is considered by many fans to be "Metal Slug Zero" (i.e the first Metal Slug game), a fantastic game! Sorry for pic's and long(ish) explainations but I just wanted people to see why I picked these games as just to throwing out a couple of names heh. |

Still don't agree with the short rules stating you must pick 2 Mame games. I remember this came up before, and the consensus was that all systems should be considered. mame does not guarantee easy emulation anyway as Space Harrier proved. I'll be picking the same two c64 games as I picked last season (since neither got picked) BMX Racers ( bmxrace2_00906_01.zip ) - C64 Tales of the Arabian Nights ( talesoan_07735_02.zip ) - C64 |

Though in the long rules it did state you could choose which system just that mame was easier, it works for people who join but can't be bothered reading the long rules, if they did they'd learn more and get the benefit of it. |

seems okay, but I wouldn't give out any points to the player. Their games would in the pot for next week, but a score of 0 seems fairer. Imagine, if the player won the league because their 50% score won them it |

Hi guys. I'm going to have to make my apologies for next season. I've got a load on my plate at the moment and find the addictive league games tend to eat into my time. Sorry, maybe in a season or two I can play again, but it's unlikely to happen until after December to be honest. I've enjoyed the league a lot - especially being exposed to classics I'd never played. I also found it really great to have a bit of competition driving me on. All the best. I'll still be around the RG forum so will see most of you there. |

Let's look at the lowest scores from this season: 21) 83800 - Kaiserpc = 6.75 points 22) 411031 - Markopoloman = 5.09 points 21) 17410 - Markopoloman = 2.71 points 22) 68300 - RevGiblet = 4.84 points 23) 5440 - RevGiblet = 3.38 points 22) 174220 - Markopoloman = 6.88 points 24) 0 - Kaiserpc = 0.00 points 25) 20700 - Danny = 5.59 points 22) 287350 - Antiriad2097 = 6.56 points So, say somebody played no weeks, we'd be taking half of each score for every week (which isn't gonna happen): 3.375 2.545 1.355 2.42 1.69 3.44 0 2.795 3.28 Total = 20.9 That's some way off the last score on the table, and Darran only played one week! If you're talking about one week of being off meaning that the score counted towards the final then this is an extremely marginal thing. The average of those numbers is 2.09, and to be fair, the difference could easily be much more if the person taking that score was actually able to post one. |

I'd like to nominate Uridium still, at the very least... Uridium (Same as last time please )But I'm wondering if I'd be able to nominate something a bit different this time... I'd like to nominate a SNES game. How about... Zombies Ate My Neighbours? (Zombies Ate My Neighbors (U) [!].zip) If it's not allowed, I'll understand... it has a score feature though, and isn't really unsuitable for the league. It's on technological par with some of the games we've played in the league to date. (If this is allowed, and anyone else is stuck for what to nominate, you can always nominate it's sequel, Ghoul Patrol )Sooo... Uridium (C64) Zombies Ate My Neighbours (SNES) |

I don't either, I think it should stay as scores posted during the week only, exceptional circumstances (like honeymoons, trips etc) should be put to a vote whether people can be allowed to post a late score... For example, I'm away for two weeks soon with no Net access or MAME access. I'll have to put up with missing two weeks' scores. |

Without wishing to further complicate the issue........... The Open University operate a substitution rule for submission of assignments specifically to get round issues of this nature. There system, or algorythm, allows everyone to 'substitute' their lowest score of the year with an average of their combined other scores. If all scores are submitted, you can still replace your lowest score with your average score. If only 9 out of 10 scores are submitted, the 10th score is changed from 0 to the persons average score for the year. I may not have explained it all that well, but I believe this system caters for the odd absences and also is of benefit to people that are able to post a score every week. Just a thought though

Fairziff, you idea makes sense when all scores are known, but I don't plan on going back and recalculating previous weeks to find averages and work out lowest scores etc across a season. It has to be done in the game week or else it buggers up everyone's league places for that week and impacts on everyones league positions for every week after. Zero points is a bit harsh imo. Stomach got married. Merman's going on holiday (no doubt with family) just as Kaiser did. The only reason we've got a 3 week gap now is because I've planned seasons around my own holiday... I think no matter how hard we try. there are going to be instances where real life gets in the way of the league. I'd like to give at least some recognition for being a regular player and as an incentive to complete the season after your season average has dipped. 50% of the lowest score will be a tiny amount. Yes, 3 points is enough to change the lead, but its highly unlikely that the lead will be contended by someone with scores that low on even one week. It does mean you can potentially remain competitive with your peers lower down the ranks though. Insisting I'm notified in advance ensures that we don't get people just playing the system because they don't like a given game one week - nobody knows which game will be played until its too late. It also means no extensions or late submissions. Deadlines are fixed and unless you've prearranged, missing them is tough luck. There will be no voting. This is not a democracy. I am teh boss. And if you don't like it I wil thcweam and thcweam until I'm thick... |
