It's nomination time again!

Season 7 of the Retro Gaming League starts at 12:00 noon on the 22nd April 2007.

The League Rules can be read here

Nomination Rules (short version):

Post the name of two games you'd like to play in this thread.

Revised Nomination Rules (long version):

Anyone wishing to participate can nominate 2 games in this thread, all will be added to the random selection for week 1. For these games to be included in subsequent weeks’ draws, players must post a score for the previous week (e.g. for your selection to be in the draw for week 5, you must play and post a score during week 4).

Games played during Seasons 1-6 and as Champion's Challenges cannot be nominated for Season 7. Nominations that were not played can be nominated again.

All games will be assumed to be the Arcade/MAME versions unless otherwise specified. The MAME ROM name and set should be specified (e.g. ROM pang, World revision).

Preference should be given to MAME where possible, as it's almost guaranteed all players will already have it. Other formats will be considered, but you will be expected to give fast and effective IT support to any other players who have difficulty with your emulator and/or game should it be selected. Bear in mind not everyone will have that 'Windows 98 only' Oric emulator you love so much or know how it works once its installed

Try and nominate games you know if possible. You should also try to pick a game that is SUITABLE for league play, ideally with a high score table. Sequels and variations on games already played will be discussed before being accepted for nomination. (E.G. we've played Super Street Fighter II, so other variations of Street Fighter II would currently be ineligible).

Buggy Boy (C64)
Green Beret
Gyruss

Varth - Operation Thunderstorm ~ Arcade
Posted Image
Simple vertical shoot-em-up fun with 30 levels and two buttons 'fire' and 'bomb'. made back in 1992 I consider this title to be one of my favourate 'shmups' of all time.

MAME rom name: varth.zip

Undercover Cops ~ Arcade
Posted Image
Weird scrolling beat-em-up made by the creators of R-Type Irem. The heroes of the game are a random bunch of misfits with super human strength that can pull out whole concreate pillars and attack enemies with them superman style. A fun but challanging game.

MAME rom name: uccops.zip

After some of last seasons choices I'm a little wary to ask for anything unusual but..

Spore on C64 (spore.d64)

Gribblys Day Out C64 (Gribblys Day Out.t64)

Sorry but I like 'em!

Hmm - Need to think about this.

You've played many of my fave MAME games (Bomb Jack, Mr. Do, Jackal, Hypersports, Rygar, Space Harrier, Metro Cross, Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Is, Star Force) already  (Wish I'd found out about this league earlier.....) and Mame is my fave platform being that sort of age.

Here's my first nominations (will prob change !)

Shinobi - Will check the Rom and Mame version. It's got 3 buttons, jump, fire and super thingy. I'll be surprised if you haven't heard of it. Platform left to right, kill bad guys and big bosses !

Tiger Heli - Not a bad little shoot em up - not to frantic - This may be changed to Twin Cobra if you can prove you didn't continue on it !
Rom = tigerh - 2 buttons, fire and bomb.

Quick suggestion - How do people feel about playing Robotron? Note - this will be a useless game for those who don't use a PS2 or similar controller, unless you've got 6 hands...........

Edit swear to god i never noticed supermario's post above re Robotron lol

Robotron - (Solid Blue Label) Arcade Version - Mame

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robotron:_2084

Quite surprised this hasn't been played before as it's IMO one of the best arcade games ever made. One possible suggestion is the dual joystick's required to play it well although a 4 button pad would be useable. Note a PSX analogue pad is perfect for this game.

Sidewinder - Amiga

http://amigareviews.classicgaming.gamespy.com/sidewin1.htm

The very 1st amiga game i ever played and it's an absolute belter of a shoot em up. It's one of those rare games that gets you by the seat of your pants as you try to avoid all the bullets and baddies whilst trying to shoot as much as you can to get your points up.

In hopes I actually have the time to devote to a few more games this season I'll substitute Battle Bakraid for Blood Bros and repeat my nomination for Carrier Air Wing.
Rom names: bbakraid and cawing. Both are on MAME.
Blood Bros/ West Story remains one of my favourite arcade games but a point whoring technique has come to my attention which means it may be unsuitable for the league.

I'll go with supermario, and also nominate Shinobi (at least it's not the neutered ,pc engine port)
and i think, for all future Mame games, maybe we should adopt TGS settings (maybe use inps aswell ,for less chance of exploits being accidently used)?

(set 5, System 16A, unprotected)ROMset = "SHINOBI

My second choice ,is a game that stars a character with a ruddy great big chopper, and three others, who all want to get their hands on his big chopper,Golden axe,
Golden Axe (set 6, US, 8751 317-123A),romset=goldnaxe

and thats the reason that so much cr@p gets picked , people are picking games because 'they' like em not thinking of the bigger picture if other people might enjoy em when the rose tinted glasses are off or weather they are league friendly

We talked about this last season. I think we should use default settings in all cases. Firstly its a pain to have to keep changing settings (and what if someone doesn't and gets away with an unfair score because they didn't realise they had it wrong).
I don't play this league for records and I find many of the games tough enough without putting them on harder settings.

Also, the league is based on trust so inp's aren't really needed unless you don't trust someones entry. Its already in the rules that they can be asked for where doubt exists.

I'm going to continue to pick Legend of Hero Tonma (MAME) again, and also Toki (MAME). I'm not going with any shmups this season because most people complain about them.

Smurph, can we have confirmation of the ROM names to make things easier?

For the majority of MAME games we will use DEFAULT settings to avoid confusion.

Russ, Spore seems OK to me but Gribbly's may prove a bit frustrating for the League. I'd suggest an alternative.

Robotron on keys is fine, so that's in for now.

Supermario and fr@ser, do you BOTH want to nominate Shinobi?

To see some sfIIce super leeching in action, click the thumb nail ,using that method , it's possible to get a score of 2 million plus,or ad finitum.

I'm just amazed that there are people who submit replays ,showing the methods they've used ,and expect to receive praise aswell.

Thats why I dislike that kind of game for the league. To me a beat em up is about how many characters you beat. the score is just secondary. But I won't open up that can of worms again :)

Never had any problems with it but if you are struggling with WinUAE and getting games to work the i've found Lemonade (not the drink) does help.

www.lemonamiga.com should be able to d/l it there.

P.S Sidewinder works great on the basic a500 config, i presume you've got the kickstart files ok?

I've got the adf on my webspace that i know defo works if that will help.

Sidewinder

Please delete the link if this isnt allowed. Apologies in advance if this is the case.

Great to see others appreciate Sidewinder defo one for the rose tinted glasses and a good game to play to boot :)

Collywobbles

Hi all,

I’m finally back from my jaunt to the US and raring to go again!

I’d like to nominate:

Burger Time (btime)
Robotron (any label)

Is that 3 noms for Robotron? I’m happy to play this as I have a MAME cab with dual joysticks. Has anyone else on here built their own MAME cabinet or am I just weird? Hang on, don’t answer that last one! :P

I think that's a no-can-do i'm afraid we need to be sure everyone is playing *exactly* the same ROM version. even tiny variations in scoring or speed can give an advantage. I hope you can understand ... I'm sure if I am wrong though the Almighty King Sureshot will interject and have me beheaded.

Presumably the Midway Arcade Treasures version would also be out. I think I actually own three different ports of Robotron.
No matter, MAME will be fine. I can use 360 or PS2 pads on my laptop and doubt I could take acceptable screenshots of my TV anyway since my phone camera is rubbish.

After quite a bit of thinking, I have decided to go with the following two games:

Lightforce (Spectrum)

and

Tutankhamun (Spectrum)

I look forward to all of you slagging them off if they get selected! ;)

I've never heard of your first choice game,(considering i was brought up on vcs ,sms ,mega drive, and never really touching computers ,it's not suprising   ) tut, on the other hand ,was a game i really liked on the 2600 vcs, good but not as good as river raid and H.E.R.O.

I was never keen on the Speccy version of River Raid, though I liked Hero. Tut is a nice, playable game that is perfect for the league.

If Robotron came up in the league would there be any objections to playing the Xbox Live version?

I think that's a no-can-do i'm afraid we need to be sure everyone is playing *exactly* the same ROM version. even tiny variations in scoring or speed can give an advantage. I hope you can understand ... I'm sure if I am wrong though the Almighty King Sureshot will interject and have me beheaded.

Actually, Robotron *may* have to be dropped. There's been a couple of major changes in the way it's emulated in MAME so we would all have to be playing the same ROM set on the same version of MAME to guarantee a fair competition...

As for Tut... ugh. We're playing the arcade version in the Llamasoft Lleague this week.

That's a fair point, a Robotron-style game would be good (although Spore is, to some extent, in that general type of genre)

Funnily enough, I was thinking about Llamatron, cos it is a superb game. Might yet change Tutankhamun, having second thoughts. Keep Lightforce, though.

Never heard of it but yeah keep it. I may even look upon Speccy games myself for a nomination.

I'm definitely keeping Lightforce. I made a few rules to myself when I started selecting games. No arcade conversions, games whose distribution is denied (so no Ultimate games :( ) and no multi-loads. With those rules in mind, I would like to remove Tutankhamun (didn't realise it was an arcade conversion!), and replace it with...
