In fact... I have some spare time now. Better late than never, it's Sputryk's second choice this week - Gryzor on MAME (or Contra, as many of you know it by). NB: you will need the parent Contra as well to play this one. ![]() Settings: Default No continues, no auto-fire Buttons: Button 1: Fire Button 2: Jump Scores to be in by June 2nd at 12:00 Noon. This game is considered one of the toughest around, so don't be disheartened if you don't get too far early on. The best gun to get is the multi-directional one, and you should stick with it throughout the game. |

Bit better, got to the boss of the waterfall. I don't really like the way down is crouch, rather than shoot straight down. It makes the moving and shooting feel clumsy in some places. And you're right Sureshot, the multi-directional gun is definitely the most effective in my opinion. Latest: 106300

I used to play this game a lot when I wasn't at the other end of that arcade playing Rygar, Star Force or Twin Cobra. I agree with Sureshot it's a classic and am glad it's been picked. Hope I can be as good as I used to be (finishing it without being killed - watch out Fr@ser ) |

Wow , tough game! Couple of tips to get you going After picking up the 3 way shooter at the beginning of the level , jump down to the bottom of the screen. If you continue along the level staying at the bottom level , you can destroy everything with virtually no return fire , as long as you've got the 3 - way shooter . When you get to the base at the end of the level , you can destroy the guy at the top and the gun emplacements , simply by ju3ping to the top of the screen and keeping out of range of their weapons The next couple of sections are made considerably easier when you've got the 3 way shooter - the toughest thing is trying to stop the game giving you a different weapon |

Here's a run-down of the symbols guys: Default Rifle: Semi-automatic weapon that fires a single shot per button press. Also, only four shots may be present on the screen at once. Machine gun = M: Converts the rifle into a fully automatic machine gun. It fires in steady bursts of 6 shots. Spread gun = S: Change the players weapon into a shotgun-style weapon. Two bursts of 5 shots spreading in a 90 degree arc are capable of being on the screen at one time. This weapon is devastating up close. Laser gun = L: This weapon will fire a single stream of plasma in a straight line that is 4 times as powerful as a regular shot. Only 1 shot from this gun can be on-screen at once. Fire Ball = F: A gun which fires small fireballs in a slow corkscrew pattern. Four fireballs are allowed at one time. Rapid-fire = R: Increases the speed of the individual shots. Barrier = B: Will make the player invincible for a few seconds - though he can still lose a life by falling into a pit. Destroy all: Appearing as a grey falcon, this powerup acts as a super-bomb and will destroy all enemies on screen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contra_(arcade_game) At least one thing is safe to pick up with your multi-directional gun - Barrier. Rapid-fire I don't know about, but I assume 'Destroy all' can also be picked up safely. |

145,300 I like this a bit more now. At least I'm not getting killed after three seconds of starting, then having to wait four hours for the countdown to finish before starting another go. Am I supposed to just keep shooting at these things at the top of the screen (when they form properly, as shown in the pic), because I was shooting them for quite a while without knowing if I was doing what I'm supposed to do. ![]() |

This game suffers from respawning baddies and no time limit on the horizontal sections With an extra life every 70k , with enough patience (ie accumulting a massive score on the horizontal sections in order to earn lots of extra lives) anyone should be able to complete the game on one score Big oversight on Konami's part |

Slightly earlier than Sunday 1279200 Alien mother blows up! For some reason, it put my lives up to 14 during this. ![]() Credits roll. ![]() And... that's it. ![]() So, back to the high-score table. ![]() What a short game this is, but awesome nonetheless. There's one bit at the end that will probably really bug you, which is that if you get to a certain point with any weapon other than the standard one, you WON'T get a barrier to battle the giant alien head with, meaning you will die very quickly. This means, you basically have to stock up on as many lives as you can, die before the barrier part and grind out the lives on the end boss with your pop-gun. |

Indeed, just been testing this out for myself. Leeched on the first level until I got bored, and had 200k and 5 lives by the end of the first boss. I did actually die for no reason once while I was standing there leeching, so perhaps there is some kind of timer going on in the background. However, it must be in about 10 minutes or so as I was there for a while. Anyway, carried on going through, leeched at the end of the waterfall section for a while and then again on the middle of the snow level. By the time I died (on one of those big things chucking the spiked frisbees), I had almost 500k. Ridiculous, really, especially due to the fact that the only way I can get a better score in this game now would be through leeching. |

286,400 I think I lost 4 lives on a massive alien half way through this level, then my last one went on a heat-seeking spikey ball thing. I must have been close to the end. I actually though the massive alien was the end baddie. I went from being really pleased, to quite annoyed, when it continued the level. ![]() |
